The sight of you @ 8:40 trying those licks and blowing it was hilarious. I applaud your courage, though, because I could never even ATTEMPT those licks. Which brings up what I’ve often thought about Rory. One almost has to be a professional player, or a knowledgeable historian, or both, to appreciate the subtlety of his technique and his command of his sources that made him what he was - which in turn may be why he was never as popular as he should have been. The first time I heard Rory was at a buddy’s house - “The Last Time.” I sat bolt upright staring at the speakers, and thought “This is it. This is greatness.” And I never changed my mind.
Nice one Fil. I always get the feeling that Rory could play pretty much anything if he wanted. Outrageous natural feel for the music and his chosen instrument.

Saw him do this at the Whisky on his first US tour . With his Vox amp on a wooden chair. The most memorable and soulful performance I've ever seen. Thank you Rory.
Rory used his Range Master treble Booster frequently rather than a lot of distortion and overdrive. So he got that clean beefy tone without a lot of mess. I've seen another video where Rory's unusual variations on scales were discussed as you have done here. And that his band was a three piece and he had to carry the show every gig often gets forgotten. amazing. he never played a tune the same way twice. Great you continue to cover him. Honestly, Rory is so fucking amazing it hurts. I was working in a pub kitchen three years ago, and I would come home every night and put his beat club session on and jump around like a madman. One of the greatest ever. Thanks phil. rock on.
I remember this video and your discussions with Martin at Beat Club (Hamburgh?). This was personal for me since I sincerely believe this is the greatest version of this song by Rory ever. And I told Martin this, and he had to believe me since I probably listened to it over four hundred times in the last decade. I wrote several mails to support you, and he was really great and I'm so glad that this has worked out well. When Jimi died, Guitar Magazine had to have a winner for their greatest guitarist poll. If Terry Katz won, I wouldn't have been sad. But it was Rory. And I don't think there was one guitarist in the world that regretted the choice. This song alone shows why. Why didn't Rory have a larger following? Maybe it was all those 9th chords, played to perfection. Maybe it was his repertoire, which didn't hit the "pop" charts. The hundreds of thousands of Rory fans won't mind that he didn't have pop success. Rory was Number One in our hearts. I've never seen you smile as much as with this video. Rock.
@@maplebonesIf he'd wanted to pursue celebrity over his art, he certainly could have done so. In the early 70's he resisted his recording company's pressure to do just that. He freely chose to stick with his artistic vision, while still enjoying a very high degree of material success.
For a really good live sampler, I'd recommend Checked Shirt Wizard, live in '77. If you love his blues, Rory Gallagher Blues is a phenomenal 3 CD collection-one acoustic, one electric and one live and with collaborators. All are rare, unreleased recordings spanning his career.
@@dawnmoore4329 Thank you, I have the checkered shirt album, I also just bought the Duece album. I am sure I saw the collection you mention. Rory has such enthusiasm in his playing.
@@flea1972 Yes, I bought this album last year and like this version better then Rory's first lp. He used the same producer Yes had for an engineer and feel it was overproduced. Rory & Co were best raw on a live setting, as with The Beat Club. It's too bad these shows weren't broadcasted here in the states on a bigger level, cause he would have been better known.
Riffs, blues, rock, jazz, folk, no matter what, everything he wanted, he had just one move of his hand away... And he was a never-ending source of ideas how to play a solo...
That was another great performance! Rory is another great guitarist and singer! It was nice of Martin at Studio Hamburg to give you permission to do this. I enjoyed your guitar demonstration and could tell you were really into this performance by your smiles and head bobbing, lol. It was another awesome analysis! Not only are they educational, you make them fun and entertaining! Keep on rockin'! 🎸🤘🙂
First concert I ever attended was KISS (headliner) with Rory as the opening act. I never purchased any KiSS recordings but own virtually everything that Rory ever recorded including his stuff with Taste. That was 1975 at Detroit's Cobo Arena. As a 16 year old guitar student I was blown away by the talent displayed by Rory. RIP.
I had a girl friend who ran off and followed Rory around the world. I named a Strat after her. Like Rory she is gone. "Margret" I have been scooping up Rory's recordings like a mad hatter!
Fil, I saw Rory play the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver on December 13, 1979. He was absolutely phenomenal and you could tell he LOVED playing for us. When I think of him I think "Roaree" and not Rory. I discovered him when I was 20 and was co-owner of Lee Chong's Books Records and Tapes in Monument, Colorado, 1972-74. Thanks for your usual superb analysis.
I was in my teens when Rory Gallagher came into the music scene. He was not appreciated by quite a few of my friends which I remember to this day. He did get aired on The Old Grey Whistle Test and John Peel played him on his radio show. It is a shame that he never got the public recognition he deserved. He influenced so many other great guitarists.
He actually had a huge public recognition in Europa during the seventies, headlining many huge festivals, touring relentlessly. We even had a poster of him in our classroom during the mid seventies. On the other side, medias ...
You have so well incorporated Rory's style of playing and the emotions he conveyed: BRAVO!! One can just tell how much you appreciate his music :-) Thank you so much for sharing!
I never heard of Rory. He's one cool cat. His music sounds very garage... garage band like. Who knew singing about a laundromat would be so engaging. You did fabulous job demonstrating the techniques and sounds Fil.
Great description. I've been a Rory fan for decades, and this was exactly why people loved him. You should watch his videos on You Tube, there are hundreds of hours, and you'll soon see why he was so beloved. Bienvenue au club.
A few days after this "Beat Club" I saw him in our city (at the age of 15). Laundromat was always the beginning of the concert back then. It was incredible. I still like to play the riff today and it still blows me away. And after the concert we "children" sat at the bar in the pub and he came in and sat down at the bar next to us. "Mr. Gallagher oh we we we.........." we stammered. He said, "What? Do you call me that when I'm not there? My name is Rory........". He never played the "simple boy" for image reasons. He was really one of us. He was the best.
I saw Rory play in Madrid at the Teatro Monumental back in 75. He was a superb guitar player and performer, I still play his records, and what a lovely person he was!
Thanks Fil! 👍🙂 A great insightful analysis of one of Rory's earlier songs. Rory to this day is still my favourite all-time great guitarist! 😊 I laughed and smiled when you commented that Rory 'just' plays... For me this is the hallmark of the very best musicians; that they 'just' play. I was fortunate enough and PRIVILEGED enough to see Rory 8 times. He NEVER EVER played the same thing twice; he just played whatever was in his head in the moment! Rory Gallagher; Legend, Genius, unforgettable!
Where is that laundromat? I want to go there immediately! Thoroughly enjoyed your analysis of Rory, one of the greatest guitarists ever. His music never gets old, only better with each listen. You're not so bad yourself Fil! 👍💜🎸
This one was so much fun I had to watch it 3 times, and then go to the original video and watch that 3 times! Thanks, Fil, for featuring Rory and explaining at least some of the things that made him so special.
Y'all need to get Rory's "Irish tour 74". He was ON FIRE: At his best, which was one of the best. This song doesn't come close to capturing what a virtuoso he was.
Everybody has his preference but Live in Europe was my favorit together with Taste Live at Isle of Wight. Pure white blues played from his toes. Thank you Rory RIP.
Rory is my all-time favorite. Thanks for breaking his technique down - it makes it all the more amazing. I have never heard anyone play with that kind of FIRE. He was a phenomenal slide player as well.
Thanks Fil for drawing attention to Rory, especially this song. I taught myself electric blues guitar in my basement in New Jersey in the early ‘70s, and the red-flannel shirt live record was such a find! I can tell you pretty confidently nobody else in my high school was listening to Rory. This was about when I discovered ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres. Johnny Winter, BB King and the Allman Brothers were also my “teachers.”
Love Rory Gallagher, a unique talent in the world of late sixties/early 70's blues/rock! "Walk on Hot Coals" is one of my favorite live performances of all time." He was a stellar performer who did not get the recognition he deserved here it the U.S. at the time, and I am grateful that I discovered him in those days and added him to my music library. Thank you for featuring this great guitarist on your channel.
Hot Coals is just about the ultimate Rory and Guitar master tune .Too bad there doesn't seem to be as many live versions of it as there is of many of his other top workouts.
Made my day with this one, Fil! Thank you for more Rory! Great choice of song to analyze by my all-time favorite musician, listen to him every day. Saw him on my 20th birthday, 44 years ago tomorrow. You really point out the many nuances in this performance which one would really need to see many times to get. Would love to see you take a look at some of his stuff with Taste, and also some of his later material, which was so beautifully seasoned...
So great that you revisited this performance. I believe I read that Rory convinced his mom to let him get that Fender Strat by saying with a guitar like that he can do both rhythm and lead at the same time so he could get 2 salaries as a musician. Looks and sounds like he was being honest with his mom.
This version of 'Laundromat' is one of my all time favorite videos out here on UA-cam. I can't tell you how many times I've watched this (literally, since I have no idea how many, just a LOT :) ). The Beat Club sessions are fantastic, it's so great to have that out here for all of us to enjoy. He does some really great acoustic stuff too, on that old steel resonator. There's a '77 in-studio version of Pistol Slapper Blues on that guitar that is just killer.
I am so glad you are bringing attention to the great Rory Gallaghers guitar mastery! The top five performance of all time is Rory Gallagher's Shadow Play Live Performance on UA-cam!
The legendary Stratocaster that Rory Gallagher is playing helps him get that sound that is unmistakeable. He is an amazing guitarist. This is a great performance. I do have his music in my collection. May Rory Gallagher rest in peace. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Saw Rory numerous times in NYC and the surrounding area. Always, always a great show. In clubs he'd frequently do an early, then late show, changing things up completely; with the late show being at least 2.5 to 3 hours. And let's not overlook his acoustic, slide and mandolin playing; Rory was one of a kind and still missed by his many fans. My son's middle name is Rory, in memory of the great he was. As a correction; FIL it's Laundromat, not Laundramat. Thanks for acknowledging The G-man.
Thanks Fil I never tire of watching you break down Rory's music. As you say, there is so much more going on than what meets the eyes and ears at first blush. Playing the tune is one thing getting to actually sound like that is another whole encyclopedia. Most viewers probably don't stop to contemplate it but it doesn't escape me that you are an exceptionally good player to be able to tackle these tunes at all much less get the very close approximations of Rory's tone and dynamics that you achieve. I was 20 minutes into it before I noticed your Rory t shirt peeking out of your hoodie. It is pretty clear you really are a serious fan and I appreciate it very much. Please keep em coming.
I saw him twice in the 1970s. Two of my bf's were really into him and got me into him too. He was one of a kind, for sure. An amazing blues guitarist, gone too soon. Gerry Mcavoy was an amazing bass player too.
Had to watch this again….. you and he would have gotten on so great! And look at YOU! Liked the picking out all these notes and the intro explanation. Sure does teach a student and im just a listener.
I am just learning about Rory now and I enjoyed this analysis. This song was upbeat and fun to listen to and I have to agree for a 3-piece band they are making some great noise together!
Thanks for featuring Rory, no miming going on there, just amazing guitar work. First saw him play live when I was 17. I waited an hour with a buddy to meet him. He signed autographs for us and apologised for keeping us waiting. Never had the big star ego. He turned down a job with the stones to carry on doing his own thing
Great analysis. Laundromat may be my favorite Rory Gallagher song. He was a true virtuoso rock player. One of the things I loved about him whenever I saw him play live was he went into his own world when he would take a solo. And we were lucky enough to see it. RIP Rory! 🥲
One of my favourite Strat tones, so much clarity and bite. It's an object lesson in rhythm playing for any aspiring blues player. Certainly, someone I can always learn from.
Rory was a GENIUS!!!Had the privilidge to see him twice in concert and he was AMAZING!Great work on the video, obviously a man of taste(no pun intended hehe
GREAT TO KNOW YOU STILL ,keep Rorys memory ,alive ,he was one of my favourites ,awesome ,live ,and auch a humble man, influenced so many other ,including , Brian May, as yu know, wtll never forget seeing him ,2 and a half hours ,virtually non stop,no messing , a trio,,a mesmering tone ,and such energy.
Fantastic breakdown of Rory. I was going to say some of his lead runs are a best thought of as a jig. Love how he went for a sort of pinched run at the end and every note he tried to play choked out as he bent it... looks like his old Strat needed a leveling or re-fret or he was at the limit of a 7.25 fret radius. He played here in Swansea a few times with Taste and on his own in the 70s('71 & 73) I understand. An easy hop back to Cork for him on the old ferry. Such a shame I was too young to see him here.
A great analysis of Rory Gallagher's playing style. I am just learning more about him and this video even makes me more interested in the man. Thank you so much for posting!
Fil, at 11:40 when you're appreciating his incredible riffing and the way you described it as having a certain bounce to it that's a key point and in my opinion he is just swinging those phrases really hard just like a jazz player and that makes all the difference in the world and to me is what separates the really great rock guitarist from the rest but I'm glad you pointed that out because he is just swinging those bars like crazy and it helps to have that great drummer behind him whoever he is he is matching everything that Rory is throwing at him and keeping a perfect pocket as well. I never really took a listen to him but I'm doing a deep dive because of you. Btw, your guitar skills are awesome and any drummer would be blessed to accompany you!
A very great talent , that seemed , at times, too shy to claim, his "rightful "ground.Thank you Fil, for delving more than anyone on YT, into his method /technique .
Excellent Fil! First good analysis of Rory's playing I've ever seen. He's got both a Vamp combo and his old AC30 set up in the studio, if you look at all the footage from that show. Obviously his Rangemaster is a key part of the sound. (Interesting that most of Ritchie's Purple studio stuff was also Strat, Rangemaster and AC30, and he used it live daisy-chained to his Marshall Major). Btw Rory's muting the 3rd string in the A octave staccato part of the main riff to avoid having the minor 3rd in there, as the 1 is A major. Saw him January 1970 with Taste at the Marquee...
What a great video. I loved this song since I first heard it on ‘Live in Europe’. The way you explain Rory’s technique is excellent and so informative. 10/10.
"And that's how you do that". Ha . I about fell in the floor laughing Brother Fil.!! Man you sure clobbered us with that one!! LOVED IT!! Rory is all over the neighborhood with his playing & that right hand. I think I told you Fil, about that young player in the comments after a Rory video. Lots of praise from me & a half dozen other. The guy wrote: All you guys that love. Rory, I just don't get it. LET HIM SEE THIS!! Great job like always Fil!! ROCK!!
Rory is the reason I picked up a guitar! I was obsessively listening to only him a whole summer and especially the Taste live at Isle of Wight album, he's a magician for sure
Rory was one of the best Rock Guitarists of his generation , Just watch his show with Taste at the Isle of Wight 1970 as evidence of that , the man was super talented and could play in many different styles xxx
just realised I've commented before (!) but this is a great snapshot of Rory at one of his 'peaks' or damn close to the set/s that became the magnificent 'LIVE! in EUROPE' album.
Rock.
For sure. Brother Fil is enjoying this one! This may go on for hours!? Ha.
The masses want celebrity, which the industry is happy to manufacture. Rory was a musician's musician, working beyond the limits.
Terry Kath
@@maplebonesIf he'd wanted to pursue celebrity over his art, he certainly could have done so. In the early 70's he resisted his recording company's pressure to do just that. He freely chose to stick with his artistic vision, while still enjoying a very high degree of material success.
Just bought his 1971 album because of Laundromat and your show.
Thank you!
You should buy Rory's Beat Club Sessions if you haven't already. 12 tracks picked from 3 different appearances 71/72.
@@gms9655 👍✌️
"Margret"
I have been scooping up Rory's recordings like a mad hatter!
Must have a Real Thrillf for Rory to meet Jean Simmons and his hard working Band?
😂 She had good ‘Taste’!
Opening act for Kiss😅there must be a immense anticlimax when Rory goes and the masked Clown's began
@@JeffreyWilliams-dr7qelol😅
Fil, I saw Rory play the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver on December 13, 1979. He was absolutely phenomenal and you could tell he LOVED playing for us. When I think of him I think "Roaree" and not Rory. I discovered him when I was 20 and was co-owner of Lee Chong's Books Records and Tapes in Monument, Colorado, 1972-74. Thanks for your usual superb analysis.
Great fascinating analysis of a storming performance from Rory. That whole show is hugely enjoyable.
Never heard of him? That's too funny
Delve deep, Rory was quite simply the best.
Even Jimi Hendrix claimed Rory was the best
He never got on my radar for some reason, which is too bad bc I would have been a fan!
Phil I've been watching you for what seems like 5 years now. You're a UA-cam staple to me. Rock on!!!
Big Rory fan here Fil and your playing is phenomenal 🎸Thanks again for the great video PS - doesn’t Gerry kick arse on bass too
Yes yes, more Rory please !!
I saw Rory play in Madrid at the Teatro Monumental back in 75. He was a superb guitar player and performer, I still play his records, and what a lovely person he was!
Thanks Fil! 👍🙂
A great insightful analysis of one of Rory's earlier songs. Rory to this day is still my favourite all-time great guitarist! 😊
I laughed and smiled when you commented that Rory 'just' plays...
Saw him on tv while in Ireland in 72 as a ten year old. Fan since then. Awesome !
Always enjoy your Rory Gallagher shows. Excellent as ever Fil, Slainte.
@@teiltje : that was great too, especially"sinner boy".
Rory is my all-time favorite. Thanks for breaking his technique down - it makes it all the more amazing. I have never heard anyone play with that kind of FIRE. He was a phenomenal slide player as well.
Rory, the man who brought me to your channel, another great video, thanks for sharing Fil.
Great video, and I love those Beat club videos too. They’ve got some of the best live footage from that era!
@@Sota-son The only live version of "Walk on Hot Coals" I am aware of is off the Irish Tour album.
I've run into a scant few on you tube but none of them match the one on the album.@@DEPARTMENTOFREDUNDANCYDEPT
This time in 71 i just turned 16 good times were just getting started for me, good memories of Rory good analysis Fil thanks. 👍👍✌🤘
Well, I’d never heard Rory before but I loved his singing and guitar playing. Thankyou for this great analysis Fil.🎄
Noooorrraaa! Happy Birthday early!

@@dawnmoore4329 Thanks, Dawn! 😊
Thank you once again for recognizing one of the GREATS! One of my favorite performers.👏🇺🇸👍
Great video and analysis. Thank you very much for your wonderful work, Fil!!
You can’t not love Rory Gallagher….hate I never got to see him … he was special, thx Fil 👍🏻
It’s His playing, give him another Strat and he would sound the same, take away his Vox & Treble Booster and there would be a big change in the sound.
He sounded just as good with his white tele, or indeed any of his other guitars.
Clueless !
Great effort with this piece from the master. I hope to get close.....hope!
👍 from Ireland 🇮🇪. A great breakdown and you’re a great player yourself. I had the pleasure of seeing Rory live in the mean fiddler. Awesome stuff
Thank you for giving Rory attention for the genius that he was. Also, cool shirt 🎼💜
I really love your analysis of all music. This is a treat!
Thank you!
Thanks bro I found the concert on mp3 Downloader Gory is on a different level. Thanks for sharing this gem.
Great video. Does Rory uses his nail together with the pick to get the harmonic effect?
I saw him twice in the 1970s. Two of my bf's were really into him and got me into him too. He was one of a kind, for sure. An amazing blues guitarist, gone too soon. Gerry Mcavoy was an amazing bass player too.
Yup.
Yes, I was admiring the rhythm section as well, the bass especially.
Thanks for breaking these elements of the song down. It shows what a craftsman Rory was. Much appreciation from Australia 🇦🇺
One of the best UA-cam Rock Guitar Channel !!! Thank you for all these amazing stuff 🎸
No problem!👍
Thanks to Beat-Club for the vid share & Thank YOU FIL for your analysis! Rory's awesome.
I always come back to Rory's music. Something about his versatility really pulls you in.
I really like your channel and your respectfully detailed analysis. 😎🎸This day's highlight. Greetings from Germany
Had to watch this again….. you and he would have gotten on so great! And look at YOU! Liked the picking out all these notes and the intro explanation. Sure does teach a student and im just a listener.
Terrific! Kudos also to bass player and the drummer - fabulous.
Rifftastic for real!! Plus being in a trio and taking up all of that space ain’t easy! Thanks for introducing me to the greatness!
I am just learning about Rory now and I enjoyed this analysis. This song was upbeat and fun to listen to and I have to agree for a 3-piece band they are making some great noise together!
I didn't discover Rory until I was in my early 40s but I've been hooked ever since.
Certainly, someone I can always learn from.
just playing this back now...He was an amazing guitarists.. no one played like him.
Rory was a GENIUS!!!Had the privilidge to see him twice in concert and he was AMAZING!Great work on the video, obviously a man of taste(no pun intended hehe
Brilliant, thanks for posting this, made my day..
What I have got is brilliant memories of watching Rory Gallagher and his band playing live, his records and one of his old guitars
The beginning riff drew me in, but you had to break it apart for me to fully appreciate it. (so fast!)
Thank you. Just thank you for this! Rory rarely gets the recognition and your enthusiasm is infectious! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎸👏🏼
A great analysis of Rory Gallagher's playing style. I am just learning more about him and this video even makes me more interested in the man. Thank you so much for posting!
I don't come here for this but that smile and your enthusiasm always brighten my day... Its infectious.
"Rory's Walk on hot coals" from the Irish Tour, please!!
So glad I was able to see him live in Detroit and San Diego. RIP Rory.
I heard 'Laundromat' live in '73 and '77, saw Rory again in '78, and have seen many great tributes since. As Mr Pegasus suggests, catch the full video. Brilliant.
Rory was the best of the best. And such a humble, beautiful egoless Man he was.
Excellent analysis video as always.
Really great the way you break it down
Great to see you tackle Rory.
