  • AoT The Final Season (but not really) released to a whole lot of doubt and distaste. But is it a good adaptation? Does it do justice to the source material? Did Eren put on his jacket right? Wow so many questions and so little time.

It’s nice to see someone rightfully blaming bad management and time constraints for the animation rather than the animation studios. A team of talented people who’ve chosen low paying and labour intensive work in a creative field don’t just turn out bad work on their own

    • @sebwarriner
      @sebwarriner 2 роки тому +8

The thing is, for the time they were given the team have put their all into making the season as good as it can be, even if the unstable production shines through. I think there's still clear passion and talent present in the season, especially compared to some other production disasters we've seen this year. While its easy to see the season as missed potential and rightly so, I think its also admirable that despite all the hurdles Season 4 still made such a monumental impact and was widely enjoyed.
Also in regards to bad management I think this reflects moreso on the committee and imposed schedule rather than the director or production staff. From what I've seen of Hayashi he does seem committed to making a good product, he's just another employee forced to pump out anime demanded by ridiculous industry expectations.

    • @frickinfrick8488

@@sebwarriner yes I think you’re absolutely right, that was poor phrasing on my part. I think everyone involved in the production most likely gave it their all and they all seem passionate about their work, as always it’s usually external pressures that are the problem. The season still looks great, obviously I miss the ridiculous saguka in previous seasons but I respect the studios decision to turn down the project as it sounds like the schedule was a nightmare

The main thing I miss from WIT were the jaw dropping sequences they would do every so often, following someone using ODM gear. Examples being ofc the Levi scene from season 3 episode 1, also when the scouts are swirling around the colossal titan when he's on top of the wall. We didn't get any sequences like that from MAPPA. They did a great job, but it's just something I noticed. I guess this is more so on the director rather than the actual animators though.

Most of those amazing sequences came from one guy (can't remember his name, Imai I think?) who mostly works for WIT so getting him for this season was always going to be tough. Maybe if there were more time, but as we all know time is one thing MAPPA did not have when making this season.

S4E3 definitely suffered the most when it came to cuts. A lot of details were not included (plenty of anime-onlies were confused by the Kenny scene) and, worst of all, the episode made it look like Annie slept through the Fall of Shiganshina, basically taking her responsibility away. She wanted to go back but then Reiner knocked her out.
In the manga she not only helped Reiner & Bert reach Wall Maria, she also summoned all the titans with her scream. The anime completely neglected that.

My personal gripe with season 4 was it adapted the manga to a point where it hurt its pacing. The pacing in the manga worked where something new was learned and some kind of twist came to the end of each chapter. When watching aot season 4 it felt like I’d watch an episode and the plot wasn’t moved forward in a satisfying enough pace. As in the episode would end and the characters would be at the same place as they were in the beginning. Maybe if I watched season 4 again all in one sitting instead of each week my opinion would change.

Every episode of the anime adapted more than just a single chapter, so it sounds contradictory to say that the plot doesn't feel as moved along each episode as the manga chapters were individually.
Also, we're you reading month-to-month for the chapters that season 4 adapted?

Whereas an episode I feel like has to warrant 24min of my time and I want the plot to move forward to the bigger stuff. Maybe my preference for manga over anime is showing.

The cgi is so clunky looking and jarring in season 4 that it really diminishes the excitement of a lot of the beat parts of the series.
Not a single scene has come out of season 4 that has elicited the reaction and desire to constantly rewatch that so many had for Levi vs Annie or Levi be the Beast Titan. Or even Eren vs Annie, or Reiner and Bertholdt’s reveal. Or the entire sequence of events near the end of the second and third seasons respectively.
Something about the presentation was just so much weaker and it shows in how no one is really talking about the season at all.

There's (sometimes) the network giving their input, and then there's the anime project committee who originally chose the studio to animate the show. Was very much looking forward to this one, wish it was longer. For me this season was fantastic thanks to the strong direction and faithfulness to a story that has become so complex and interesting. S3P2 may be more fulfilling since it was the climax of the story at that point, but this season is the evolution of AOT and the show has never been more interesting. Never before had I seen a show that blurred the lines between good and evil so well, I genuinely don't know who to root for going into this last season.
Sure it is a shame we'll never see what this season could've been with more time, but considering the circumstances this season was made under, it turned out shockingly well I think. The CGI and character designs could be distracting, but overall this season just felt right with the overall direction and atmosphere matching the quality that I came to expect from past seasons. I could go on forever about this season so I'll just stop here, but thank you for taking a fair stance towards this season since too many people on the internet refuse to. One of the most disappointing aspects to me was the levi vs beast titan fight in the woods. I heard once the argument that the change of art style compliments the overall story tone from the black and white view of humans Vs titans into the much more grey view of morality and war. I'm very on board with this POV of a new dark world opening up and I can extend it to the CGI titans that makes them look more alien and unnatural than they were before - fitting, the more we know about them the less we understand.
What looks better or worse is subjective, of course. But for me the different art style reminds me to look at the show differently, too. It's not the same show as we know it anymore and that's what engrossed me in to the story and lessons it has to share. 🙂

Still season 4 is clearly better visually still than Berserk 2016, and the conditions behind the scenes was far different. It just feels like a lot of companies using 3D are using it not because it would work and they want to use it, but instead they use it because its quicker and they can meet deadlines. All of the story tweaks are added by the author's order, so Falco having a dream about flying with swords is intentional foreshadowing that maaybe he's destined to become a titan shifter or receive memories through PAtHS from Eren? I think it's effective to give us continuity and a reason to pay attention to this character in a first episode that many may otherwise find confusing because we're switching to a completely new set of characters and it takes time to figure out where and when we even are.
Really the issue with this season is the same as with half of season 3: the many many cost saving steps. Not only does it make some episodes look cheap, it cuts out panels and parts that carried meaning. Annie stepping on a bug mimicking her stepping on Levi squad is replaced by just a single panel of a squashed bug. Showing the first appearance of the Colossal but from the other POV, with Berthold looking down on Eren&co as kids, is replaced by reused s1 footage. Annie's investigation is cut short making it confusing (people have actually inquired if Kenny is her dad because oddly that quip is what they chose to keep, rather than clarifying why she is following him). Now if you look back on s3 there are pars in the finale or Historia's flashback that suffer from the same eact problems, but it's even more frequent and poignant this season, and it's evident that they simply did not have the budget. Which speaks volumes about the state of the anime industry in general when one of the biggest names can't get funding and gets passed around between studios with the cheaper offers.

MAPPA has done pretty well overall, considering the massive undertaking and demands this series has a reputation for. I'm not as bothered by the CGI Titans as much as most have been, but there are definitely a few moments that either looked stiff or just plain off (still leaps and bounds above WIT's god awful Colossal Titan) and I actually liked their choice of rotoscoping in the second episode. It helped lend a bit more character acting to scenes that otherwise would have been still images. The time skip was a perfect time to make the studio change, but I do miss the overall polish that WIT had with their backgrounds and lighting. 4 episodes in and I feel both physically and mentally drained. Also i feel slightly more prone to becoming angry.
The animation isn't really an issue to me i just wanna know what the fuck is going on and I wanna see some familiar faces...

In my opinion Mappa did an amazing job, including the visuals. I didn't mind the CGI at all. People are overly allergic to it.

dang this was great, I'd really like to see your opinion on the P2 teaser, from the looks of it the cgi is definitely much much better and doesn't even look half as jarring, second the character art looks phenominal the expressions are amazing, also the lighting and composition. it seems they basically improved everything

I must be the only AOT fan in the world who is not angry with the new animation. I really think it’s fucking fine 😭 only thing I’m worried about is the ending since I read the manga.
    now THAT shit was disappointing.

12:10 That's where I have to disagree. S3p2 marked the point where I noticed some shit was going down behind the scenes since s3p2, in my opinion, is easily the weakest Attack on Titan has looked by Wit. Pick ANY moment from s3p2 that ISN'T either ep 1, the Beast titan fight, or Armin's sacrifice and majority of feels.... half baked. Eren vs Reiner was extremely underwhelming, a lot of the ODM movements felt REALLY stiff to the point it just looked like characters were moving in mid air still asf. LOADS of reused animation from previous seasons, the opening alone reuses A TON of old animation and was mainly still frames. Erwin's suicide charge lacked the bombastic animation the previous animation had, there was A LOT more human CGI used (it was even noticeable in s3p1), titan movements just felt really sluggish, I could go on.
I never found myself disappointed with season 4 compared to how I felt with s3p2. Large part since I knew I wasn't going to be expecting anything like the first 2 seasons. I love s4 but everyone was making such a huge fuss out of EVERY SMALL thing. The point that really pissed me off was when people were bitching about the music choice for Eren's grand transformation in Marley. S4 RUINED Youseebiggirl for me because the fandom just thinks THEY KNOW HOW to direct. I'm just glad Attack on Titan is ending now so this shit can finally end.

yehhhh the moment he pointed out S3p2 as its peak by a production stand point, i couldn't help but pull a face lol. it was reaaaaally awkward often times. but the amount of sakuga and great moments sort of balanced it all out so i cant blame anyone for feeling that way. scenes like erwin's charge and the scouts vs reiner are carried by fierce expressions and so much weight overall. the feels were real in that part of the season so as i said, i really cant blame anyone for feeling the way they do about it. weight and immersion overshadows quality IF a show is a well written.
still, it doesn't undermine the fact that s3p2 was the wonkiest AOT has ever looked, so i dont disagree with you. and tbh i have nothing to say about s4's reception lol. i personally found its quality jarring compared to S3p2 but i agree with how exagerrated the feedback was. i remember the build up to Eren's attack on marley, and all the whining they did when they didn't play the right music lol.
