Surprised you didn't directly mention how superior the Reiner reveal is in the anime compared to the manga. The flag pole that falls, everyone freezes and Reiner starts talking with the start of YouSeeBigGirl. I also recognize the impact when I initially read it in the manga was really good, but the voice acting and ost took it to a whole other level.

Yeah I think that each season adapted things differently, as in the sense that the first season adapted almost everything, and changed the order of events, and even added some stuff all to improve the storyline. Season 2 has some amazingly adapted epic moments, but some of the reordering, added scenes, and cut content hurt it overall (though personally I prefer this season simply because of the story and characters). Season 3 part 1 is probably the worst adapted one though because it skips and rushes through very big chunks of content, though the presentation is always amazing.

I like the reveal in each version equally for different reasons. I love how understated it is in the manga, but I also love how dynamic it is in the anime. I had a section written about it, but ended up cutting it out, since I didn't think I was saying anything substantial there. Either way though, I'm happy that you mentioned it here!

In the manga I kept going back and rereading it and being like “wait, what the fuck is he saying??!”.
The one weakness of the anime is there’s an awkward amount of time between them saying it and the full reveal that goes on too long and kind of sucks some of the tension out.

The only way to think that's inside the walls is miss that, and if you're an anime only and don't read the middle cards, you're doing it wrong.
I can get someone arguing about if that card should have said that, but people ignoring that fact or not knowing it exists bc they don't read those, that's just wrong.

I like fair play murder mysteries, where the audience is given enough clues to figure things out. As such the Ymir flashback seems important to me, without it there are twists that i don't think an audience could figure out by themselves. It does raise more questions than answers, but that's good, it gets you questioning things before you're given the answers, which makes the eventual answers seem less like they came out of nowhere.

You could maybe have mentioned that in this season the role of director was replaced from Tetsurou Araki to Masashi Koizuka. Though Araki is still "chief director" of the project you can definitely feel a change in directing sensibilities that suggests he had less hands on or imprint on how it turned out. Actually if you were to look up some interviews you could see Araki say he is now in charge of sound while Koizuka is in charge of visuals, which might be why the music and voice acting are still so strong.

Agree on direction and storyboarding being less consistent but the animation supervision was way stronger in S2. I was surprised to hear you say that S1 and S2's characters look indistinguishable because thats not the case at all. S2's models are more polished and more iconic i would say. I think Isayama having a better grasp at his artstyle helped the anime adapt said artstyle with a clearer and more focused vision.
Also the Ymir flashback was one of the most brilliant choices the anime could make. It shows you just enough to get your attention but not that much in order for you to connect the dots. It serves as a smoother transition before the huge reveal in season 3 compared to the manga which was very sudden and overwhelming

    • @santokun5835

The character models were very bad in tv version for s1 tbh. They fixed a LOT in the blu ray which is what is available now a days. S2 also had it’s fair share of problems for CDs, every episode past ep 6 had inconsistency in character designs. I remember one particular episode getting 25 AD, that’s how bad the schedule was, so really can’t blame them.

  • @digitdude99
    @digitdude99 3 роки тому +33

Ymir's flashback i think is incredibly well placed because in it's core it's been placed to enhance the themes and arc of Ymir which I believe is poorly delivered in the manga. In the manga it was left intentionally vague for major interpretations until the viewers understand later when receiving full context, but when watching it in the anime, the directing and story being told does the same through telling us more information while remaining vague under the manga's intent. The scene enhancing and swelling us with emotion despite not fully understanding where it's coming from, allows us to still be there and be pulled closer in with Ymir as she goes through her moments of freedom and the bigger moment of t her truly acting like a goddess and saving the villains out and empathy and understanding etc. etc. Without the context of the flashback I think arguably the season's biggest character moment is left in obscurity and questions of "Why did she save the bad guys" & "why didn't she stay with her beloved Historia" from the audience not understanding what Ymir's arc even is, which is how I and others felt during the manga, which is fine for that format of weekly chapters adn steady / consistent flow of story and intent, but here for an anime production the staff knew to snipe the moment and build it for the seasons climax to make the audience fall more inlove with Ymir while we still have her rather than after the fact. For those reasons and others, inserting world building like that earlier in the series makes for a more polished and carefully thought out production, but if it were placed where it should be, it'll all feel fairly linear, less clever, more standard and uninteresting.
I think the directing of this season stands out from the first and third for taking a less hype and more heartfelt, somber approach. The symbolism with patriotism, the falling of soldiers, the ducks and innocence of childhood and it's rivalries, nostalgic blue flowers . The insertion of more character moments in the extended and added flashbacks I think play in hand for a more fulfilling season when otherwise these characters meeting their ends and arcs don't feel earnt enough in the time given from the anime, while unfortunately a few of the great moments are lost, the scenes added for bulking the focus of the season and the scenes lost to showing and not telling. Some of these added scenes like you said don't teach us new things, but they do flesh out and remind us it's real, i don't think it's fair to criticize the scene because characters had already stated their relationship, that would be weak writing if characters only told us and implied relationships and feelings rather than showing and making us be there to feel it.
Bringing up the Erwin stitch up, it's a definite change that almost entirely changes Erwin's whole character, but change as you should know doesn't inherently mean bad. Erwin in the manga, is transparent from the sacrifice conversation which almost plays like a reveal that he's actually a good guy, while the anime plays into the ambiguity of him to the very end, which leaves more food for thought and implications which didn't take anything away from Erwin, only adding. I've had friends, to my confusion, who were scared from his intoxicating personality that so easily swayed many soldiers to their deaths and were convinced he'd be revealed as some twist villain, when I and others adored him for his resolve and that sinister hope he brought with him. Erwin's without that scene becomes a figure of question, with more questionable morals and end game, which anything builds towards his childlike dreams even stronger.

Another big change for me was Hannes' death. In the manga, the death comes out of nowhere. It cuts to Hannes who is already cut in half as Eren is screaming. In the anime, Hannes' death was built up with tension and dramatic music. It makes the events feel a little less chaotic and the death itself less surprising, by being more focused on Eren's point of view.
As for the end of the last episode, I thought they would come back to the skipped scenes in season 3, but as we know, they skipped a looooot of stuff (RIP titan Eren building a house). Oh well, still better than Promised Neverland season 2.

The fight against the bread stealing trio for example did three things in one flashback:
      1) Showing the old daily live and point out that regardless of all the horrors they have experienced, they are still the same. It gives them a vision of an old life to fight for but it also leads up to Eren's breakdown, realizing he is still incapable to save the ones he loves.
      2) Reminds the audience about Hannes and points out his character development from a drunken scallywag soldier to a responsible guard of the walls helping his friends in need. All this was not shown but is important to give his death impact. He was trying to redeem himself but failed against the cruelty of the world regardless.
      3) Showing how life is still unfair and cruel. In the past, they fought against the group of bullies for Armin's bread. Now they fight against titans for the freedom of humankind.
I think this is a lot for a short flashback and definitely made me feel so much more in the scenes that followed and climaxed from this.

@@vicarludens I feel like it assumes that the viewer is dumb and already forgot about all of those three points.
Attack on Titan didn't change in tone, at least not enough for viewers to forget that life is still cruel and unforgiving, it's not like we watched them have fun in the beach for two episodes, most of season 2 is people dying left and right, so of course the world is cruel.
Not much time has passed for us to forget that Hannes was a goofball, him saying that he was promoted was already good enough for us to understand that he improved. Seeing him again was enough for me to remember that he was just a drunkard.
I'm not sure what you mean with the first point, even now on the latest chapters of the manga, eren is still fundamentally the same person. The only one that did change was Armin, likely because of seeing Bertholdt's memories.
All I'm saying is that they were not needed in the first place, maybe it depends on the viewer?

I feel like this point on Historia's scene is incredibly disingenuous because she has an extremely similar conversation with Eren Inn the first episode of S3, which gets across the same point as this one in the manga.
If you're doing this analysis from the perspective as a manga reader watching the anime episode by episode, I suppose that makes a bit more sense, but adaptations remix the order of events all the time, which brings us back to square one

I actually love where they put Ymir's backstory at in the anime. Up to that point I was anime only. And theory crafting was a huge bit of fun for me and friends. That flashback gave such a HUGE amount of puzzle pieces to theory craft with. Who were these people? Was this a place outside the walls or was it the walls themselves? When did this happen?
For us, our biggest theory was "This was the walls but a hundred or so years ago, before something reset their way of life." We thought that maybe the titans were something man-made and being experimented with and it just led to so many other wonderful ideas.
So, having it there without the same context as when the manga shows it, really helps build the mystery and hype I'd like to think. It teases the big reveal of the world at large without revealing it. Plus it gives us way more sympathy for the character during her big moment.

But I actually preferred season 2 to season 1 of Attack on Titan because of the plot elements that were introduced- for me, season 2 was where attack on Titan went from good to great. The introduction of the intelligent Beast Titan and the reveal of Reiner and Bertholdt as the armored and colossal Titan basically changed the nature of the story and it made it all the more intense and disturbing. I liked season 1, but the story got really good in season 2, cgi colossal Titan notwithstanding.

It was kinda overshadowed by the other events going on at the time. If we only had that and then Hannes telling us that the kids meant alot to him it would feel a bit hollow, which is actually something I thought when first reading the manga. I think the flashback does a good job of showing us, or at least reminding us, that Hannes and the main trio did have a sort of relationship. It's totally fair if you have more positives about this season's presentation (like you said, there are definitely some stand-out moments and things they did a wonderful job with). However, I've always found the presentation of this season to hold it back for me personally. Of course, that's not to say it's objectively poor or anything like that. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal preference. Still, I can see why you feel I should have at least mentioned some of the more positive elements of the animation and presentation. If I rewatch it again, I'll be on the look-out for the stuff you talked about and, if it stands out to me the same way, I'll likely include something about it in an eventual update or continuation of this series. That being said, The Canipa Effect has a good video where he goes into the animation for each season and I believe he comes away feeling that Season 2 had the greatest presentation and animation overall, so you might enjoy that one if you're looking for a different take on the season.

After watching your analysis it seems pretty clear that the anime is trying to accomplish something very different than the manga when it comes to how much information it reveals to the audience and when. While the manga seems to want to sprinkle clues and let you build this world yourself, the anime wants to build up to each information reveal. You brought up a good point that in a manga a reader can spend however long they want on a page, but in a TV show they don’t get that chance. So handling information like this, making sure that the audience has time to digest each important reveal of information, I’d say is a smart and engaging change. Also understanding this change is, I think, key to understanding and recontextualizing the cut content and the handling of Ymir’s flashback.

I would love for someone to make a chronological order of AoT events that we get in the Anime, starting off with the earliest (Ymir's flashback?) then going through Grisha's story then on to Eren's childhood and then the fall of Wall Maria, so instead of flashbacks events happen at the time they are meant to.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is flashbacks that flash back to periods of time we as the audience did experience. It's jarring to see something you've already seen, only to be told "actually, no. You missed some stuff". It really reveals the hand of the writer in that it makes it extremely clear this wasn't planned out. If it was, then why did we not see it during the period of time this event occurs in? Especially when it concerns characters we were following during that time. The writer wanted to create set-up for a pay-off, but wanted to retrofit it because they failed to set it up in the first place.
This is one of the laziest things a writer can pull. I never stop to think "aah, what a smart writing choice" or "wow, that was so well put together", but the opposite. I'm left sighing at how flimsy the structural integrity of the narrative is and my engagement drops significantly, because I feel like I'm discouraged as a viewer to be attentive to what's going on, as the writer has already shown that they're privy to banking significant plot threads on things they invented right when they needed it.
This is why I massively prefer season 1's anime to it's manga outside of the artwork. The training segment is moved to when it actually takes place as opposed to only being shown when its contents are plot relevant. I feel like in deducting and putting together the pieces regarding the femoid titan along with the cast, which does a lot to get me empathizing with their disposition as opposed to being spoon fed something I couldn't possibly have made sense of otherwise. It doesn't feel like a ret-con, but a strong sense of cause and effect.
For example, Reiner being grabbed by and escaping from Annie is one of my favourite moments in the whole series, because it seems somewhat janky without context, but once it's revealed to have been totally on purpose, my mind was blown at how much the story expected of me and how effective it could be at weaving itself together as tightly as that.
There are a lot of flashbacks in season 2 that I feel really should have been in season 1, presented in chronological order. Sure, you could argue it would bog the pace down, but I'd say that's a good thing, because if the writers recognize that, they could have reworked the relevant information into something that slotted in more seamlessly with the surrounding content it was being retrofitted into.
Season 2 was disappointing to me for a lot of reasons, and this lack of self-reflection regarding structure is one of the big ones. Season 1 recognized where it could put the work in to tighten the structure of the story to enhance cause and effect and play down any contrivances, while season 2 seems content with sticking to the manga, even if that wasn't necessarily the best choice.

Great video. My only complaint is I wish it was longer and you went more in depth, but I understand the video needs to be short and accessible so most people will watch. I hope Season 3 Part 1's is longer, there's SO much you can talk about with both character and plot (You could even break up plot into structure, pacing, and foreshadowing). The biggest criticism I've heard of S3 Pt 1 in the anime is that it seems like it's just pushing things along to quickly get the audience up to date with these answers, and solve the issues in the wall, so that we can be caught up when finally battling Reiner, Bertholdt and the Beast Titan. the most painful part of this criticism is that in the manga it's not like that at all, all of the reveals and plot devleopments are so naturally baked into the characters and the pacing so it's actually its own story and not just a way to achieve a purpose. I'ts unfortunate because it really does feel in the anime like S1 and S2 spend time slowly stringing you along with these mysteries and then S3 Pt 1 goes "Ok never mind we took too long, here take these answers so we can move on" when agian the manga treats it with so much care

I'm reading the manga and watching the anime right now, and I liked so many things the anime did but I feel that the anime leaned a bit too heavily into Mikasa only worrying about Eren and then went on to removed Eren worrying about her being hurt. I used to think it was very one sided until I read the manga and I'm wondering why they did it that way.
I also agree on Connie I was surprised that was cut, as well as how the Jean/Eren convo was trimmed down where Eren was doubting himself and the gang teased Jean about being so 'preachy.' it was a moment of levity that would have been nice to end on.
