      @@GamingStew Because small pieces were laced throughout the entire story. On rewatch you notice so much shit that was right there in plain sight, and it’s why almost every plot twist does not seem out of nowhere, because they were hinted at intended all along.
      The major ones is that in the manga, Miakasa’s symbol on her wrist was shown more than in the anime, and the original shot of Grisha talking about the basement key you can see him facing the exact same way in the flashback. These hints were so subtle that the studio themselves didn’t think it was important so left it out of the anime. Hell, the entire show begins with seemingly random visions and every single shot is explainable at the end of the series. Whether people like the story at the end or not, every plot point has been seeded so the story fits together like a puzzle.

    There are two scenes in episode 1 season 1 that got me into AOT. One is Shadis' breakdown, the other is Hannes admitted to Eren that he failed because he didn't have the courage.
    The bleak honesty of these characters convinced me that the author of this story would be willing to say things most people aren't comfortable to say. So I stayed. No regrets so far.

    • @TheYodelingViking
      @TheYodelingViking 2 роки тому +40

      I think you mean Episode 2. I don't remember what episode Shadis breakdown was, but Episode 1 ended as Hannes was running. After abandoning Erens mom the only 2 speaking in Episode 1 are Eren telling Hannes to let go and the titan not to eat his mom as well as his mom telling Eren and Mikasa to live on and then crying and saying quietly with her hand over her mouth to them "Don't leave me".
      Edit: Shadis breakdown was Episode 1 though. Remember now when he returns and admits the loss of all the soldiers were for naught since they didn't make any progress.

      i love how in attack on titan most of the time the scouts aren't trying to prove anything, like "everyone is being devoured, nothing matters, i might as well sacrifice myself as a hero". no, they show how humans would actually react in situations like these. even if all hope is lost, they still try to extend their life. like in s3 p2, the recruits were going to be shredded by rocks anyway, but they were petrified to go with erwin's plan.

      Honestly it was Erens rage and anger against the titans for me. Most people found it annoying but In my opinion Eren has the most realistic reaction to watching his mom and people he’s known his whole life getting eaten. I don’t know about you but if a titan nommed my mom I’d be BIG DOWN to murder all the titans. Hannes admitting to Eren he couldn’t save his mom because he was a coward honestly disgusted me when I first saw it, a grown ass man is apologizing to a child who just had his mother killed to make himself feel better. When I first tried to get into the show when I was younger the emotions it elicited in me were so overwhelming I couldn’t watch more than a few episodes without having a panic attack.

    I think you perfectly captured how important Sasha was to the overall tone of the story.
    We’re faced with a lot of death and destruction in AoT, but Sasha is the only character (so far) that made me jump out of my seat when they were killed. The tone of the series really changed with Season 4 from the openings to the art style. I think losing Sasha was an in-universe representation of how things have changed.
    EDIT: Thank for addressing this again ten minutes in lol. I wasn’t sure you were gonna go back to this after you first mentioned Sasha’s death.

  • @WillRock07
    @WillRock07 2 роки тому +64

    I did notice the shift in tone by killing Sasha. At first I thought it was a rather pointless death, but then I realised that if she'd stayed, the tone wouldn't be the same.
    I actually remember seeing an essay about Game Of Thrones that said Bronn should have died in Season 7 for the same reasons, and that the showrunners for Game Of Thrones were ironically afraid to kill off fan favourite characters they liked in the end, which ultimately hurt the show.
    This is obviously something Attack On Titan hasn't had a problem with, because it puts the story first and is ultimately the better for it.

    The anime staff needs more credit IMO. Sure, Isayama's script and story is amazing, but the direction, animation, edition, effects (btw these changed the industry as a whole), pacing (not you S1 tho...), music (especially the music) created a piece of art that is to me, the ultimate form of watching this piece of media.

  • @AbcXyz-we7nj
    @AbcXyz-we7nj 2 роки тому +12

    Isayama's comedic chops are severely underrated, Attack on Titan's has made me laugh to tears several times. I think the overall no-nonsense attitude and the shunning of common anime tropes in the story really enhances each rare comedic moment.
    People really underestimate how much humans need comedy, even in the darkest of times. A story having a dark tone still needs to have some breathing room here and there, human characters that don't joke around, even in the worst of times, are too unrealistic.

    Excellent video! I appreciate your insights.
    One thing that has shocked me after watching many videos about AoT is that no one seems to appreciate how incredible the season 2 finale is (at least not as much as I do lol). Hannes’ character arc coming to its climax as he overcomes the cowardice/laziness of his past, and grows to be the courageous man he was trained to be, is still one of the most rewarding scenes, especially since it was foreshadowed in S1, as he explained that Eren did not have the strength, and Hannes did not have the courage, to overcome the smiling titan’s murder of Eren’s mom. The fact that Hannes, a man that Eren criticized for having this character flaw, overcame it and now risked his life to avenge Eren’s mom, and all Eren could do was weep over the fact that he still did not have the strength was incredibly well done. In my opinion, the depth of that scene perfectly encapsulated one of the primary themes of S1&2: the feeling of powerlessness in a cruel world. It's a feeling we all face at certain points in life, and I think the author illustrated that common life experience masterfully.

    Quick point on gallows humor: I think the reason it's so psychologically necessary for humans to do so is actually because of how humor itself actually psychologically functions.
    The little we know about how it works is that it requires at least two things: a subversion of expectations and a lack of threat. When we encounter something surprising, we have two circuits that may be activated: threat detection, or false alarm. If, after observing novel stimulus and determining that, yes, it is indeed novel, our brain then has to decide how to react, which then moves us into fight or flight, or alternatively we can also freeze up. If, however, we realize that said stimulus was not in fact novel and we DO know what we're looking at, the response seems to be laughter if said stimulus is far enough outside the realm of what we thought we would encounter.
    What I think gallows humor is is this: if we can force a clearly dire situation to be funny, it removes our sense of threat. If we can truly find something funny about it, we also get those endorphines from laughing which helps calm us down. So trying to make jokes in threatening situations I think is a way of forcing our brain chemistry to not overload, and I think it's especially why we do so in situations where we deem there to be no good outcome. If there IS a way to get out of a bad situation, our brains will immediately seize the opportunity and try to escape. But in a hopeless situation, we can't deal with the overload of signals saying "threat detected, action required." Our response at that point is just going to be "yeah, I know, but I can't do anything about it, dude, so please just shut up." Well, in order to "shut up" that barrage of signals, one of the things you can do is find something ironic about the situation. It allows your perception of the situation to momentarily shift so that the threat seems minimized and it allows for you to think clearly again.
    Just my theory after observing myself in particular, so I could be totally off base.

    This. The only anime/manga I’ve seen that compares is One Piece, which also use technique, and maybe even better.
    One piece has probably made me laugh harder than any manga, but by doing so it helps the moments where you dread, cry, or cheer hit harder than ANY other series.

    • @mamory3791

      One piece has a major problem now Though. Nobody dies or rarely so. The stakes have become really low for me in Wano because of how many times did characters were supposed to die but only for them show up again alive and well in the next chapter.

    Spoiler.
    This series is and was always going to be a tragedy. Eren was never free. Since the day he was born, he was set on a path by Ymir. The irony of a person that wanted to be the most free, but really wasn't - you could say he was drunk off of it, like Kenny once said: everyone is drunk off something. Eren never really had a plan - he was just choosing the best options he could with the information he had. Like Levi said multiple times throughout the series, you don't know what the right answer is, you just have to make a choice. Eren made the choices he knew were horrible, but had to, to force the person he loved the most kill him, finally ending this cycle of Titans and giving his people at least 100 years of true peace and freedom. Eren was just a flawed person, not a God. He became what he hated the most in the series to save and protect his friends and people - first a Titan then a slave.

    I don't really watch any anime other than Attack on Titan. I watched it back in 2015 I think, before any further seasons had come out. It looked like it was abandoned, but then came the rumors and the eventual release date of season 2 (feels so weird to think that Sasageyo was season 2) and I followed each episode every week. I've been doing it ever since, just checking for the next season release date and watching every episode as it comes. When I think about it, it's just "cool", but seeing videos like this talking about everything makes me realize what a spectacular show it is.

    Yes, attack on titan is sad. With a very big however though it for me it becomes so much more then that. Its really just one of the few few animes that has left an emotional impact on me. Life with its intertwining complexities, its good and its bad all played out in attack of titan. I've watched the anime several times and the many contents related to it on the web. At times, yes I feel it s emotional impact on me but I've accepted the sadness with a celebration to the creation of this epic timeless anime. Will be forever in my heart ❣❣❣

      It's sarcasm .
      Seinen = serialized in a Seinen magazine no matter what the content.
      Both Kaguya sama and Kubo won't let me invisible are serialized in Weekly Young Jump , a Seinen Magazine alongside Kingdom and Tokyo Ghoul was previously serialized in there.
      So if stick with "Seinen= mature"
      Chi's Sweet home = Seinen manga because Chi's Sweet home serialized in the Monthly Morning ;
      so Chi's Sweet home = mature.
      K-ON = Seinen manga because serialized in the Time Kirara ;
      so K-ON = mature .
      KissxSis = mature ;
      Kodomo no Jikan = mature ;
      New Game = mature ;
      Kaguya Sama love is War = mature ;
      B Gata H Kei = mature ;
      Asobi Asobase = mature ;
      Yuru camp = mature
      Non non Biyori = Mature .

    You know a character is well loved when their death has a huge impact on not just the other characters, but the fans. I don't think a single one of us ever liked Gabi after...the event. Because she took Sasha away, and only now after Gabi has seen where Sasha has come from does she understand the gravity of her actions

    • @Setsunako6587
      @Setsunako6587 2 роки тому +1

      I never "liked" Gabi (I don't like kids in general and she is VERY much a kid, just a kid with years of intense military training), but the hate she got seemed a little... extra. We all loved Sasha, but I'm still shocked that (at least the most vocal) fans couldn't see the context in which Gabi [blank]ed her. Like, is the *child soldier* really to blame or is the *situation* in which children are soldiers in the first place the "bad guy" 🤨? I think a lot of folks missed the point Iseyama was trying to make. Thankfully, there was a satisfying redemption arc that was *hopefully* obvious enough to humanize her... hopefully 🤦🏾‍♀️

    I feel like a lot of people talk about the openings but not as many people talk about the endings. Not in a "the endings are under appreciated" way, but in how they kinda reflect the secondary tones of the season at the moment. There's never an opening-ending pair that evoke the same emotions (closest might be Red Swan/Akatsuki no Chinkonka, but Id still say theyre very different). My favorite pair so far is the current ones, with The Rumbling and Akuma no Ko. The Rumbling feels like its full of rage and hate, all the emotions you'd think Eren is feeling during the Rumbling, but the ending feels like (and the visuals kinda support this) Eren thinking about a peaceful paradise he knows he wont live to see.
    Idk how the manga ends, havent read it yet, but possible spoilers based on theories I've heard:
    Again, POSSIBLE SPOILERS?
    If Eren really is doing the Rumbling, knowing his friends will stop him so the world can recognize the Paradis Eldians as good people who would give their lives for people who hate them, that's the perfect OP-ED combo. It's almost too on the nose.
    If anyone replies with any unmarked spoilers I will hunt you down.
