Can we all just take a moment to realize how incredibly lucky Akbar was in this chapter? Dude wasn't fast enough to join the other guys rushing below deck to get away from the crab riders and is forced to hide behind one of the narrowest of covers while Li's dead body is above him; yet somehow, he still doesn't get noticed and survived through that attack. It's just a shame he isn't as lucky later on.
I'm not even exaggerating when I say that for a good two days after I played this game I was in kind of a funk cuz I felt really bad for pinning the death of Wolff and the sailor whose name escapes me on Ackbar. It was pretty clear that he was the one who lit the fuse on the cannon that blew those two to smithereens, so his estate got fined for the murder of two crewmates :/ I suppose it shows to go how well done this game is that I felt so bad about a collection of pixels.
I’ve played and replayed this game too many times to the point where I feel intimately familiar with the characters. Now I can only watch let’s plays to relive that sense of discovery and success.
The ship steward's fate was driving me insane - it was the last one I had to get, and by all accounts I thought that I assumed correctly that he got spiked by one of the crab riders. But no. He accidentally got shot by the frenchman. THAT BULLET TRAJECTORY WAS BARELY VISIBLE.
In a way it's the same for the Formosan who is killed by firing squad, it took me a while to figure out whose bullet actually killed him as I was still geting used to the art style and looking around at everything else too, marvelling at how well the in-game scene matched the drawing by Edward Spratt
@@wulfricr7635 Yeah, that one was a doozy as well. Until I noticed the bullets and carefully followed their approximate flight path to find out who it was, I was stumped as to which one was the first to kill the Formosan. But it was one of the scenes where I managed to pinpoint A LOT of identities all at once, mostly thanks to the artwork by Edward Spratt.
This is one of the best tracks. It manages to capture the ripping yarn nature of what's happening, the heroism and courage as the crew fight back against the ferocious attack by the crab riders but also the melancholy as many of them will die here.
The first time I heard this song was nearly 3 weeks ago when my mate played it after I bought it him for Christmas. When he was investigating the corpse on the starboard walk he looked up through a window to see the chaos right as the clearer/closer bells started playing, which really amplified the effect. This song has been stuck in my head ever since.
you can also see the crab riders climbing the ship when the lighting hit Hhoung Li hard, imagine the sound of the thunder while seeing these crab riders holding spears lol
The first major twist to this game is the Kraken. A sea monster in a murder mystery? Holy shit. And you play the other chapters and get a better picture of what happens and you know the kraken attack is really the climax. You know it's the big flashy supernatural event that blows everything else away. The second major twist is that the kraken is not the only supernatural monster the crew faces. When you dive into the chapter, you see carnage as the orlop deck is ravaged by horrendous sea creatures that are not your typical monster like the giant squid. They are freaky and foreign, and you have previous fates in the chapter to set the atmosphere for what the living quarters are like. It's beautiful, and you can only see them through slots in the wall. I truly loved the time I spent playing this game
"En daemon! (A demon!)" "Out of my way!" "Beat to quarters! Enemy aboard!" "What's going on?" "Stay back! It's already done for Nick!" "Come on, Boss!" "No, get down!" "Hey! Catch!" *tosses axe at Crab Rider, gets spiked*
This and the theme for "The End" to me are the defining music of The Return of the Obra Dinn. The Doom is probably the one with the most impact and exposure (given the sheer amount of deaths in that one chapter) but that beats there can at times feel generic. Soldiers of the Sea and The End on the otherhand have stuck with me as iconic to that game. Soldiers of the Sea captures the menace of many of the unfortunate events the Obra Dinn suffers, and The End captures what feels to me as a great teaser of the mysteries the rest of the game challenges the player to solve.
I agree. Having the game begin while only 4 people are left was a genius move. And pushing to slowing into the story rather than shove a bunch of characters at you all at once.
I've been enjoying hearing people struggle with this, the "Somebody shoot it" line immediately followed by the sound of a gunshot opening the scene means I never thought it was anything but death by gunshot.
@@FinetalPies Same holy shit, I originally assumed it was gunshot but had the wrong name so I looked up a hint guide which said "rethink your assumptions" which made me second guess myself and think he must have actually been speared. I was so pissed when I found out I was right from the start lmao

Now that I know what I'm listening for I can hear it from the beginning, but it gets drowned out about 4 or 5 seconds in. It's most audible 9-10 seconds in, just after the bells start and the drum sounds, and it gets a bit louder at 19 seconds after another drum and again at the 24 second drum. It's like the first track is the sound effects of the attack, the drums are the flintlocks firing, probably missing in panic or just not affecting the enemy, and the claws are getting louder because they're getting closer to the people below deck. Edit: Also, the bells could be a reference to alarm bells which were used to notify crew of fires on the ship (but hey, in the case of crab demons I would imagine they'd be ringing the bell).

It was at this moment that I realized how screwed all these guys where. A chilling thought to be sure.
Fun fact: those bells are called a "carillon." Often housed in bell towers, carillons are usually owned by churches, universities, or municipalities. They can include an automatic system through which the time is announced and simple tunes are played throughout the day. Carillons come in many designs, weights, sizes, and sounds. They are among the world's heaviest instruments, and the heaviest carillon weighs over 91 metric tons (100 short tons). Most weigh between 4.5 and 15 metric tons (5.0 and 16.5 short tons). To be considered a carillon, a minimum of 23 bells are needed; otherwise, it is called a chime. There are about 700 carillons worldwide. And yes, I too hope to one day own a house-instrument-building.

Am I the only one who thinks the piece sounds better if the two parts are played in the other order? Soldiers of the Sea 2 is calm and ominous, while 1 slowly builds up to an unbroken melody and a crescendo. Part 1 also ends on a note that sounds a lot more final.
And all of his fellow Indian friends were dead by that point :(

and then he dies by falling off the boat. poor sod was likely food
His luck ran out.

If you notice, there's a hole on the wall in present time which indicates there was a bullet penetrated.
@@huyucnguyen9851 Yeah...I'm ashamed that it took me waaaaay too long to notice that it was, in fact, a bullet hole, and not a spike hole.
Same here. I was so confused I nearly left the ship early to see if I needed to know about the bargain to confirm the last couple of fates.

"Main sail hauled up! Secure the braces and lower the topsail! Work fast, the wind is alive!"

This is the precise moment the game goes from "Whoa" to "WTF". And becomes even more awesome. :D

If you listen listen closely in the beginning of the song then you can hear the snapping of claws.

With all the death in this chapter, this music sounds heroic, and adventurous. It doesn’t sound like it was a sad time, it sounds like you are telling a story of an adventure, to your kid about the good times when you were fighting danger and overcoming deadly encounters.
