I've never seen the stop block on a table saw technique before, thats whats great about carpentry. I'm 15 years into a successful career and still learning new tricks. :)
I have been watching your videos for a while now and for some reason just now watched this video and I am very impressed with your ability to craft something that is beautiful workmanship and extremely functional, thank you very much for sharing your projects.
Sunday morning with a ridiculously cool (and expensive) project. It really doesn't get any better. Thanks for showing the good and the "F-ups" too. It really does make watching entertaining and reassures me that I'm not the only one that waits to the very end of a project to irreversibly screw it up. Thanks!
I love that you include the mess ups and changes to plans. Also love the acknowledgements to other people. Super fun to watch you and makes me want to start doing some better projects!
I love Blacktail Studio!! Also, you should do a "re-do" or "update/fix" video where you do something to adjust the height of the table. It would be a cool part 2 type thing and you would get a taller table.
John, this is amazing. I follow Nick Padulla also. He stated he wanted his workbench to be an extension of his quality of work when customers come into his shop. You have just achieved this as well. When you have potential customers come into your shop and they see this work of art as a workbench that you use everyday, it becomes a selling point. Beautifully done sir and the carving work was the finishing touch
This bench and the Pedulla bench are two wildly different videos and styles. I loved them both. Incredible work. It looks amazing. I love the functionality. I love the details. I'm so glad you did the front the way you did. I was looking forward to this after seeing the snippets on insta and it was worth the wait.
Incredible build. I love you showcase mistakes and the fixes for them. My mentor always said the difference between a pro and an amateur is the ability to fix/hide mistakes.
You should consider using parts from a sit &stand desk. This will give you the ability to go from a 24.5 hight to a 45 or more depending on witch 1 you buy. All electric and some with programmable settings.
WOW. That "new", old saw 10:40 into the video looks DANGEROUS 👍🙈👍. It is very useful, I get that.... but, but, but. Keep building huge, awesome furniture, and stay safe!
@@jimmyers264 Mostly he focused on the insane things the manuals presented on how to do stuff, like wearing a full lab coat and tie. Or cutting sheet goods by putting the blade horizontal, out from the table at gut height, then pushing the sheet through it standing on end. Or using crazy lawnmower shaping blades. Modern RAS units have blade shrouds and guards, too
Omg I love the rolling glue hopper!! It's so cute 😂 and the table itself is just glorious! If you wanted to do a sharp-edged carving with that amount of symmetry, you'd probably need to use a CNC or be extremely precise in order to be happy with the look. Rounding it out both removes any small flaws and also makes the grain undulate so beautifully, just like the water ripple you wanted to emulate!
Hi 👋, John, very interesting work bench, I built a work bench many years ago, 3Mt x 1-5 Mt , I made the legs the same method as you have made, out of 1 inch thick through and through plywood, with the mitre locking joint, I did put an infill in either end of solid oak, so the framework could be bolted together, the workbench was a vacuum table as well, just over four years ago, I downsize, mainly I moved to France, I’m now in the process of making a small workbench similar to what you have just made, and I still have quite a lot of my machinery, Even a Watkin EKA Tenoner , SCM PLANNER SCM THICKNESSER , 10 hp spindle moulder, tilting head Felder . It looks like you have a decent size workshop, stay safe, and I wish you all the success for the future, Phil from the moulin France.
You should see my bench lol. Its 12' long, integrated power strips ran to separate 20a breakers, It fits my 36"(?) Husky 8 drawer tool chest underneath (also adding outlets), drawers, and my table saw/stool goes underneath in the middle. Integrated dust collection with a custom arduino circut that controls a motor that switches dust collector position. Ive got a side mounted "sweep into" type port, and 2 ports on either end for the vacuum to connect to. It's all on caster wheels that ratchet up and down so it slides easily(relative to being a 12' workbench) And lastly I finished it with herringbone patterned laminate flooring that looks so nice and is super ez to clean. It's also got T track in it.
This workbench perfectly matches your over the top builds. I love it. I also think this will probably be the trend setter of beginning to integrate technology into traditional workbench builds. And Im excited to see where it goes. Well done
I love how you made a jig, and clamped your work piece to the radial arm saw, then proceeded to put your hand by the business end anyway. Your perfect score of amazing me at least once per video that you still have all of your appendages is still intact 👍
Loved the video, I’ve been off work a year with vertigo, so I’ve seen a lot of your videos, found them to be great and fun! With this one, the bench looks great, whilst watching it , especially with some of the joints, a few of the expressive lines I sometimes use came to mind… such as “bodge it and sod it” and “close enough for farm work “ came to mind. lol. But it all came good and worked out in the end. “Build it use it bruise it!” Awesome. Keep up the good work. Ithankukindly.
Awesome and inspirational. I recently retired, and decided to do wood work. I am just learning, and your worktable has inspired me. I want to be just like you when I grow up.
Best part of my daily commute. These videos got me into woodworking.made my first pieces this past spring. Wish I could show to get opinion on what to do better.
Nice! You need some thick rubber floor mats like they use in restaurant kitchens and then you can run the cord to your table between them and save you knees from the floors.
I built my first workbench based on your early bench video. It was an awesome learning experience- which is a nicer way that I F'd it up along the way but learned some valuable lessons. My biggest problem was that the perimeter frame was not square. Maybe off by 1/2". And I forgot to consider a 1/2" stand off from the adjustable table feet and so my Table Saw bench top is not exactly even with the workbench to use as an outfeed table. Regardless, I can adjust and make it work. But I did some drawers and open storage. Only think I should have incorporated a built in vice. And I used the workspace casters that you step on to engage- same ones from your video. They are awesome, but I mounted a bit too low and my table is heavy AF and it's difficult to engage. Anyway, awesome design. I would have maybe did your logo on the top face and filled in the voids with epoxy.
So cool that you give a shoutout to Pedulla Studio. So many youtubers don‘t and just take credit for other people‘s awesome ideas. Great and fun video as always! Also a gigantic and incredibly cool bench build!
Beautiful job. Can't wait to see more updates an projects and many more videos soon my friends. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend fab On. Weld on. Keep Making. stay squirrely God bless.
I have the Benchcrafted Crisscross Solo too, and yes, that looks like the correct amount of toe. And, my cheap-ask Grizzly drill press handled drilling the oak in my chop effortlessly. ;-). The bench looks great, and the wave logo came out very nice. Pedulla's bench is very nice. Another good build. If I build yours, I think I'm adding air shocks on one end. I want to get it bouncing, what with all the underlighting. (ha ha). Good stuff guys.
Keep posting more videos like this. Honest woodworking, no tiktok etc. Your personality is awesome why waste it on someone else's bad ideas. Present your own!!!
Love that locking miter bit. Used one to build a new pinball cabinet for a Bally Playboy. Amazing, but took forever to setup. The directions for adjusting had the exact opposite effect.
love my radial arm saw, but with the blade horizontal to the plane with a moments inattention you could give yourself an unintentional appendectomy pretty easy, love the results of the build though
Man watching that old radial arm saw is a real pucker factor moment. OSHA must be having kittens right about now 😂. Beautiful bench old mate. Cheers from outback Australia 🇦🇺👍
Good morning Morgan's, the deer sure like the green grasses on the little clearing. Sorry to hear about Pete I will be donating a little money to him, hope it helps some. Logging is a very dangerous job. I knew a logger he had a tree that was hung up in another tree fall on him it broke his back and he was paralyzed from the chest down for the rest of his life, he cut logs his whole life and was very experienced, be careful out there. You guys have a nice day
Can you guys put a link for what vice's you used for this build? There's so many options when it comes to vices with widely varying prices. My vice right now is simply a 24" pipe clamp fastened to my workbench so I guess any actual vice would be an upgrade lol
As most of us regulars know John came from the Suck it and See School of Wizardry and Woodcutters. The finished bench looks awesome and hopefully will serve John well for many years. Good luck to all of you entering the bench competition. Good post, please take care 👍
Gorgeous workbench. I always feel so inspired to create something beautiful after watching your videos. I love walnut, its my favorite wood by far. That other wood you used looks gorgeous with it. Ive never heard of it before this video. I love learning about new types of wood!
Next time you plan to make lock miter corners on a box, legs, cabinet, etc. save yourself time, effort and a hassle- get a Lock Miter Master setup jig from Infinity. It is a simple, little, inexpensive jig that works with virtually every brand of lock miter bit (has limited capability when used with lock miter shaper bits with replaceable cutters.) No fiddling with multiple test cuts!
