James is pissed. It's not just playing too fast that's the issue. It's the sloppiness and fluctuations in tempo that is really off putting. They need to sit Lars down and have a talk to him.
I think that is instrinsic to Lar's playing at this point. I LOVE him in the studio but live he pisses me off, lollW Wish he would sometimes play his own arrangements at a consistent tempo. But I do miss the old days where it was easier for the rest of the band to keep uyp with him. That's gotta suck now!

While I do and have always liked Lars’ drumming (being a drummer myself, dunno if that makes a difference?) but I can say without any fear of controversy,
“He’s not even the best drummer in the band”.
If James was a VERY talented octopus, I think he’d have booted Lars out a long time ago and done both jobs himself.

go see their performance at Elton John tribute show, James directly faces Lars to make sure he stays in time -- edit: this is why imo the donut stage was a bad idea - it's tough enough as it is for these guys to stay in sync, when Lars and James are so far apart physically it makes it even more difficult

0.12 Kirk gave James a WTF, pissed off look to say something was off. Kirk and James both looked like they were rushing to try and keep up to Lars, causing it to sound like crap. The timing and rhythm was off right from the start because Lars drank a couple Monsters and was running away from them. And of course there is no bass to try and keep time off either. The song is not as fast as Lars was playing it here.
There is no bass because the sound quality is trash.

I love early Metallica, but, frankly, Lars has never been above mediocre and is probably why they never really grew from ..And, or the Black album.

I've played guitar in bands before it's the worstttt when a drummer speeds the song up faster than you initially wrote it because then you struggle to play it because you're not used to playing it so fast!

Metallica doesn't use "clicks" (it wouldn't be a problem if they used it but they just don't use it),the earsBugs in their ears are adjusted so that Lars is following what James is playing, we can say that Papa Het is Lars "click track".

Lars was carrying the beat at 230bpm though - that’s significantly faster than it was originally recorded, and even after it was sped up.
Kirk and James were clearly lagging behind with James not able to keep up and having to resort to just power chords

James' career was getting frustrated with a bad drummer. I feel like he's going to die without knowing what it's like to play with a good drummer. Poor James, deep down I feel sorry for him.
Remember when Metallica used to speed up everything live was not all on Lars 😂 track's like creeping death and Battery was insane live in the late 80's i dont think they have that attack and speed anymore but age and just making live performances more economical the tracks have changed a bunch over the years from relearning or just to make it easier even james is using less down picking. They are still a beast of a band live and really happy these guys are still playing shows. But It's not going to last forever if you haven't already, go and see them before you miss out.
Do you still have the same speed you had as a teen? I mean take what you can get. Wayne Gretzky is not playing hockey anymore, Michael Jordan is not playing basketball, Joe Montana is not throwing touchdowns and Mike Tyson is not feared like it's 1987. Things change. The fact these guys are still going in their 60's. Most males in the USA today around 20-25 are fat and overweight from being a videogame indoor person.

@ndesdsadfd I'm guessing that he looked at his drumming as a means to an end. He did everything he could do musically to get to the top. But once he got to the top and established himself (Black Album era) he no longer felt the need to improve. He viewed drumming from a business sense rather than a musical sense which is to keep working and improving on your craft.

Lars drumming deteriorated during the covid break. It's at the point where I don't really enjoy the band anymore, which is really sad. I don't know what the answer is, other than him spending more time on his health and getting some tuition from a couple of really good teachers. His attitude seems to be a million miles from that though...even in this clip, he gets up and does the Liam Gallagher walk like "still got it....I'm the man" 🤦♂️
