The Chinese colonies (Shanghi and HK) were always a rough beat as can be testified to by the Fairburn Sykes fighting knife and Defendu(?).
I can remember a 1970s British TV series looking at Hong Kong policing and I particularly remember the treatment of refugees. If they made it to land on HK all well and good but Chinese refugees caught en route were sent back to mainland China with not a care about their treatment in China. This was to prevent HK being flooded with refugees.

RHKP inspired me to become a police officer. I remember growing up in HK thinking these are the coolest looking and most professional police in the world. I remember I had wondered off in Kowloon after church and a RHKP officer was able to find me and bring me back to my parents.

I think their transition to blue uniforms look much better but less functional

Not anymore. They are just cowards who shot civilian/teenage with gun and cry for injury by a laser pointer. If I were you, I rather keep it in mind as a beautiful memory instead.
Time for story telling:
I was once lost at the Repulse Bay beach during a summer outing (late 70s'). I was seperated from mom because of a huge wave. When I got back to the shore, I lost my orientation and couldn't find my mom. As a kid I remember I was scare. I was then picked up by a plain cloth PC that took me to a local police kiosk (many locals will know what I'm talking about).
I remember very clearly, the office told me "Don't be scared. If you are scare, we can be scared together." My mom found me at the police kioosk shortly. There were many good officers back then.

Growing up in Hong Kong in the mid/late 90s and through the handover was a very formative experience. Having only gotten into firearms in the last 5 years, seeing this rich and detailed look into the RHKPF's history and equipment is fascinating. Guess I need to go watch some John Woo films now.

@@cupajoe60 If you understand cantonese enough you could also check out some more recommendations below from the final years of the handover grace period where the creative lead still have enough autonomy to skirt around the agenda requirements the CCP wanted them to convey. As a bonus these production's casts were also stacked with alot of familiar faces from the film circle.

depicts the Organized Crime & Triad Bureau during the early 90's Young & Dangerous Triad fever, More of a Means Streets story.
The Defected (2019)
take it with a grain of salt about the bureaucracy but this film highlighted the structural change of the Police force throughout the late 90's to the 2010's and the power struggles between the leadership figures loosely based on a real life story.

Kowloon walled city at it's prime and the rampant corruption during the late 60's mentioned in the podcast. Stars Donnie Yen and Andy Lau.

It's just a whole HKPF promotional campaign spanning multiple series depicting multiple character's career journey starting from day one.
Had the pleasure of shooting with the RHKP and Royal HK Customs personnel in 1995/1996. While we were shooting for center mass, the RHKP and Royal HK Customs personnel were doing mainly head shots, even from up to 15 meters with their issued S&W model 10s. When we transitioned to carbines and shotguns, they were spot on too.
I'll tell you it was impressive to watch and they were a great bunch to train and shoot with. Confident in their ablity without arrogance and very professional. Thank you for the video, it was a good trip down memory lane.
My understanding is that they now have hollow point rounds for the .38s?
Fantastic video, I finally get a better sense what my parents mean when they say how they missed the old police officers they'd call "uncles", also always fun to see someone of non- asian ancestry putting in the time and effort to familiarize themselves with the local language. Even if it seems a little unnatural, the effort shows.
the old times shall be missed, sadly it lives on only in our minds now.

Thanks for putting together a really informative video. I was an RHKP officer from 1984 to 1994. In my time I served in PTU both on Company and as training staff, EU HKI and was also a firearms trainer so I recognised a few faces. I also travelled across SE Asia as a competitive handgun shooter. You clearly researched this very deeply. You might be interested to know that RHKP also had a few SA only Colt AR15 HBARs fitted with bipods. These were later interations with M16 A2 rear sight.

I have a surplus RHKP Model 10 S&W I picked up at a pawn shop back in the 90's. Nice gun and very accurate. Looks like it was carried a lot, but not really fired that much.
It's like that with almost all surplus police pistols. May not have the best finish, but mechanically like new.
Pencil or heavy barrel? As I known that rhkp replaced pencil barrel to heavy barrel. Recently HK press says will adopt China made pistol soon.
@@GafJoeIIPencil barrel M10. Serial number shows it was made in the early 60's. Came with RKHP stamped on backstrap with a lanyard loop on the bottom of the grip.

I could tell this episode meant a great deal to you. I hope to see more LE related episodes. For instance the Dallas PD "Shotgun Squads" which gave birth to "DPD Tactical". They carried FN Uzis, Remington 870s, and Remington 700s with 20" heavy barrels chambered in 6mm Remington.
I spent a little over 2 decades as a Peace officer in the DFW area, and still work armed security, protecting a
College campus.
The “Shotgun squads” in the 1960-1970 time frame here in DFW
Functioned much like that special squad in NYPD headed by Jim Cirillo
Where they would stake out stores that were under unusual risk for a violent armed robbery, and would confront the suspects…. With a fair amount of suspects getting ended right there on the spot, to the point robberys went way down, really quickly because no robber in thier right mind wanted to tangle with the shotgun squad. The NYPD squad heavily used the .30 M1 carbine with expanding bullets, which worked 100% of the time in close range shootings.
This is so well put together. I think this captures history buffs and gun nerds alike. As a European I gotta say you and Ian (Gun Jesus) are my favorite gun channels to watch as you guys satisfy my historical and engineering curiosity as well entertain without bringing too much US politics into everything. Pure professionalism and great sense of humor. Love you man
Would love a series more on RHKPF. Grew up in HK and love the nostalgia. Sharing to the world more on HK content that people don't ever think about with such a content rich place would be amazing!

I've been waiting for this since I realised you were from HK as well, incredibly well done. A bit after my time, but this brings back the stories my parents used to tell. I particularly remember something about the SDU repelling from a black hawk onto a building in North Point to bust some communist cells where they used to live.
Great episode! My grandfather was a Royal HK police officer. My mom told me they use to live in the police dormitory when she was young. My friend's dad was also from the Royal HK police force. He was an Inspector, but retired and moved to Canada. Thanks for the interesting history of the RHKP!

My uncle did several stints in Hong Kong when he was in the British Army back in the late 50`s and early 60`s, he always spoke very fondly of the people he worked with there and the work he did...a great place during a better time...

This is one of my favorite episodes yet! The combination of Henry's discussion with historical footage, modern-day range footage, and even the HK action film really conveyed the spirit of the RHKP. I really liked learning about these firearms within the context of their use within a unit. Thank you 9-Hole.
I love your Chinese/Hong Kong content Henry. As a Chinese-born, American-raised guy, I would watch some the Hong Kong police dramas on TVB with my parents at home and this takes me back. We spoke cantonese at home so this really feels nostalgic even though nowadays I can barely speak it anymore from not using it.
You are Cantonese, not Chinese! In the end, thete is no such thing as Chinese. It's a lazy description within and outside the ethnic people fall into the category.
Love these firearms profiles of lesser-known organizations. Please keep these up!

This was a great episode. I loved your podcast episode with Officer Wong and this as a follow up showcasing the firearms used by the RHKP was really cool. I think episodes like this showcasing the equipment used by iconic groups and units would be a really neat addition to the content of the channel.
I personally love this format. It gives the viewer a great broad view look of how a force developed and the reasons why they supplied themselves with certain firearms. It puts the faces and logic behind the weapons at the forefront of the video.
As much as I enjoy the range videos, I do love the historical deep dives. Excellent video guys.
Fantastic episode Henry. I have a friend who grew up in Hong Kong, his (Brit) dad was pretty high up in the RHKP, and on my last (tourist) trip there I was lucky enough to get some insider scoop from people who had been there and done that (but didn't buy the t-shirt).

I loved this episode - I’d like to see about an even mix of episodes revolving around a firearm and episodes revolving around an organization.
That was really great, it's important IMHO that we consider firearms within a social context just as much as a technical one. Ian brings this sort of thing to a lot of his French stuff. I for one would like to see similarly themed content more often.

Great episode Henry. Weirdly my first firearm I ever handled was also a Sterling at Shek Kong, when I was a little cub scout in the early 80s.
This video brought back memories of my stop in Hong Kong back in the early nineties as a Marine aboard the Belleau Wood LHA3 as part of the 31st MEU. I saw there for the first time Gurkhas and met a retired officer of the RHKP who had some very interesting stories to tell of his time on the force.

This is absolutely a fantastic video format! You can do episodes on different rebel groups, police forces, terror groups, and militaries of small nations that have to be very cost conscious about what they choose as a firearm. I like this concept of revolving around an organization. Keep it up
As someone who has currently only two weeks of law enforcement adacadmy so far. I say this episode hit me different. Seeing and understanding from a new perspective. Marching, shouting orders, uniformity,learning use of force etc. And nostalgic feeling from all the HK films i watched as a kid growing up. Being a gun nut who can't stop collecting and loves practical training/shooting. Just feels strange and good with a little bit of warmth at the same time.
This was a fantastic episode, I really enjoy this format, there is a lot out there on military service rifles however, police firearms are equally as interesting and not so much talked about. Please make more like these. Great video !

Good presentation. It's unfortunate that the Government in Beijing wants to stamp out the unique interaction of Chinese & Anglo-Saxon cultures that is HK & Tiawan, rather than using them as gateways of cultural exchange between the two worlds. It shows a limitation of imagination & vision.

If we had refused it would have been treaty breaking, & the Beijing Government would have had legal grounds for military invasion, which England could not have stopped.

People always talk shit about colonialism and such but you cannot deny the positive effect it has had around the world on many peoples. Everyone focuses on the bad and never the good. Never those who ended up better off. The Opium Wars are considered to be just evil English imperialism and yet the people of Hong Kong quickly discovered that, by comparison, western rule wasn't all that bad. And now they're being absorbed by the CCP. The rights they used to have, gone. The ability to freely speak out, gone. Every election is manipulated. CCP party members are everywhere, in office and hidden amongst the population on the streets. Secret police disguised as protesters who then beat the fuck out of dissenters.
Everyone felt bad for Hong Kong and then suddenly forgot about it with Taiwan taking its place in the public's eye. I couldn't imagine what it's like living there now knowing that nobody is coming to help you and everyone seems to have deemed you a lost cause. And yet there are still people out there who genuinely believe socialist ideology is actually a good thing despite directly causing WW2 and much of the current suffering and injustices of the world.

The RHKP SDU is where I really got in to fire arms. Always highly thought of the RHKP. But kind of lost respect for them for the way how they treated it’s own people of recent. The RHKP to me is not the same as it’s modern day version. RHKP a era of police history gone.
While goose stepping isn't that bad of a deal (I think it's very cool). However, in my opinion they should retain the original British Army foot drill (open palm salute, presenting arms from slope/shoulder arms, 90 degree arm swing, raising your feet) and incorporates it with goose stepping, symbolises the One Country, Two Systems Policy (I saw a mainlander making comment like this)
Sadly CCP main goal is to incorporate HK into the mainland as soon as possible, rather than waiting for 50 years.
