  • My Dad, (Rest in Peace), extoled the virtues of the 30-06 Springfield and demonstrated his marksmanship on Game for most all of his lifetime. Therefore he thought the 308 Win. was soporiferous. Well I listened, learned and formed my own opinion, albeit later in life. Both Cartridges are Great!

My Cherokee grandfather began teaching me to shoot when I was 8. At 10 he allowed me to shoot his .30-06 deer rifle, as he was teaching me to shoot long distance. Over my summer with him and my Indian grandmother, I progressed to consistently shooting bullseyes at 800 yards. He was very proud of me and I bought my first rifle with him at an antique place for $30. It was a WWII training rifle in .22.
Between the .308 and the .30-06, it's no competition. I was a military sniper and have shot about every caliber rifle out there, but the one I love to shoot is the .30-06. Its versatility, its availability, and my familiarity with it make it my hands-down favorite.
Thank you, Mr. Strohmeyer, for an entertaining and interesting show. Oh, and nice shooting, too!

My first deer hunting rifle was a Savage chambered in .308 with a wood stock. Even though 30-06 has a ballistic advantage, it didn't seem like it would make any difference in deer hunting for me. You can't go wrong with either.

At the height of the ammo shortage; the 30-06 was the only rifle cartridge left on store shelves.
It was especially Designed as a main battle rifle round.
It is about 20% more powerful than the 308.
Just a few reasons to prefer it.

Total opposite in West Tennessee bro. I was glad I had a 308 because it was literally the only hunting ammo you could find. And even then it was damn near twice the price. I agree though that the old 06 is probably closer to the one gun to do it all than 308 is but unless you’re going out west or are shooting over 300 yards, a 308 will get ya anywhere you need to go just as well.

Correction on the .308, if I may. It was introduced in 1952. And what a great all around cartridge it is. And there have been so many cartridges that have used the parent case of the .308 to create some mighty fine rounds. Nearly every rifle manufacturer chambers rifles in a .308 and the ammunition is nearly always available. Thanks for sharing. Stay well, Merry Christmas and God Bless.

I really liked this video. Great comparison between what was available to the vast majority of sportsman in the 60's through the early 90's to what's available today.
My grandfather, whom sadly passed away before I was born, harvested many, many deer with the model 70's predecessor, a model 54 in .270. He always said, according to my father, that any range your rifle could shoot a group that you could cover with your hand was fine for hunting.
It's true that there's nothing the 308 can do that the 30-06 can't do better. The fact is that the difference isn't enough to justify the long action and extra weight. If, and that's a big if, you need more power or better ballistics than the.308, your next logical step up would be the.300 win mag or something like that.
Not to be "that guy" but this is one of the reasons the 6.5 Creedmoor has done so well. It simply does the job without muss or fuss and if you want to significantly upgrade the ballistics your going to be burning a LOT more powder with everything that goes along with that.

It has been said that the .30-06 will take any game in North America. And I believe it. Again, it really matters on application. I had often heard that the .308 Win was a short action version of the .30-06. Then, later, I learned it was actually descended from the .300 Savage. They are all .30 caliber slugs, just different length and weights with different length cartridges to hold whatever amount of powder is required.
I read the big game hunting book by Elmer Keith, who was also partial namesake to the .333 OKH, he is the K of that. So, he favored what we call straight wall. Modernly, that would be the .350 Legend, .450 Bush Master, and the .45-70 Government. Barely cracking 2,000 fps and dropping nearly 5 feet at 300 yards. But they are perfect for hunting in the dense woods or populated areas where long distance cartridges are not allowed.
However, I could see where people might prefer .30-06 Sprg or even .300 Win Mag when shooting the high plains. There is no place to hide, you have to spot and stalk. Then set up and shoot 200 or 300 yards. Because then, the high speed and heavier bullet and higher BC have an advantage. That being said, .308 W can hunt that distance, too. You can hunt deer with a .243 W in my state. And I have seen another guy harvest a canadian moose at over 100 yards with one shot of Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor 143 gr ELD-X.

Have both. Each plenty of gun. If you reload, 308 yields more rounds per pound of propellant. Big dudes do the 06 long action ok smaller dudes do the 308 short action better. However, in the hands of a skilled marksman both do the same thing with little difference to tell.

One could easily say that the groupings show the effect of flinching with the larger cartridge. The first shot to the right may very well be there because Dave had not shot the 30:06 for two years and was unconsciously (perhaps consciously) apprehensive of the recoil. The two other shots did not reflect any flinching. As Dave said himself: "The first shot is the money shot!" In the case of the .308, Dave knew that it was a cartridge will less recoil, and that the rifle was a heavy one, further tampering down the recoil. No problem there! The grouping shows no flinching at all, and is, in fact, superb at 3/4 of an inch. The great quality of the .308, which marked it at its birth as indeed a 'whipper-snapper' was that it did not scare young soldiers. And it does not scare most hunters. The 30:06 is at the limit of what average-weight men consider all-day recoil. A box of twenty will leave a blue spot on most shoulders. .308 much less. As for being able to kill anything that moves on the American continent, who of us shoot at buffaloes, grizzlies and brown bears? Thank you for once again making an unpretentious and pleasant video. Always fun to watch!

    • @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
      @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009  Рік тому

You maybe right. But it could also be a non free floated barrel, cold bore/clean bore shot. But shooter error and possible flinch is always more than 50% of marksmanship. But for me as a hunter, the 30-06 has taken game 50 to 1 over the .308 win. simply because of the number of years in personal use.

The anticipation of the shot going off is THE CULPRIT in most cases of inaccurate shooting. The way he did the dry fire is the true “ give away “😮.When I was growing up, early teens, dad asked me to sit on the ground and shoot at a target. He PRETENDED TO CHAMBER A ROUND, standing directly behind me so I would never know see him loading the rifle. Then the GOTCHA YA moment of dry fire and 🙈😞. Needless to say, he asked me to go for bear hunt the next day with a shotgun 😮😢. Age 13 years.
Age 18 years . Pops got a good deal on a . 470 NE with a sack full of old ammo. Every 2 or 3 shot will hang fire. Again GOTCH YA 🙈😩. The he shot a few rounds …bulls eye with EVERY HANG FIRE . I never forgot my lesson. He was a God gifted person in the art of accurate shooting ! He seldom spoke and never reprimanded me or corrected me. He just wanted to see if I was naturally GIFTED in the art of accurate shooting. But surprisingly, I hardly ever missed my ACCURATE shots on the game. This was going on in India..more than 60 years ago .
I hope he is enjoying in the happy hunting grounds. See you later dad.😢

Agreed, The best rifle/cartridge/caliber is the one you're most comfortable shooting.
I always find it funny when these guys get into arguments/debates over which is best over 400, 600, even 1,000 yards. Where I hunt (southeastern woodlands) I RARELY get to see anything beyond 150-200 yards(most are within 100), so those debates are a moot point because damn near any caliber will do the job at the range I'm hunting.

The advantage of the 7.62x51 over the 30-06 is in automatic actions. The advantage is a shorter cartridge case makes for a shorter bolt travel and an easier extraction. Ballistically, the 30-06 is much superior after 165 grain bullets, due to greater case capacity and recommended powders.

Big diff I see is that for military ball 308 goes subsonic about 800 yards and 30 06 goes sub sonic about 1000. The problem is that you often do not need to shoot things at 1000 yards. Just getting a clean line of sight is hard enough. So to have a regular military cartridge for 1000 yards is just overkill. You do not tend to fight the enemy at that range.
For hunting, you really shouldn't try to kill an animal at that range. It is hard enough to just hit the target at 1000 yards, even harder to hit a vital part. Hunting at that range is unethical.
So if you look at realistic cases and real world application. Those extra 200 yards are not really worth talking about.

1:44 I think a better way to say it is that, unless you are hand loading, the .308 does everything the 30-06 does just as well. Even with the different muzzle velocities, Remington ballistic tables show the 180 gr Core Lokt .308 dropping only 5 inches more at 500 yards than the 30-06. 1 MOA is not only less deviation than a hunting rifle will fire a soft-tipped bullet, it’s less deviation than most hunters can shoot with. For factory loads, there is zero difference between the .308 and the 30-06.

The 308 was created so ammunition would be lighter to carry. This was to especially help machine gun crews. So if you need to emplace a machine gun 308, if you're hunting the 30.06. The 30.06 loads can have greater customization, and a 25.06 and 35 Whelen gives you other choices from the same cartage.

Real ballistic advantage over the 308 . But they all are fun so live it up

I purchased three of them some years back and all three failed. One was mounted on a .338, one on a .300, and one on a .30-06. After a few hundred rounds all three rifles started experiencing a gradual, and eventually substantial loss of accuracy. I even went as far as changing the shooter trying to nail down the issue, and it turned out the scopes were loosing their zero a little bit with every shot. One of them completely broke internally to the point you could see it jump around simply by smacking the stock with your hand. I got them all at the same time so it could have been a 'bad batch' situation, since then my rifles all get Leupolds or nothing.
