    The two cartridges are ballistic twins until you go past 165 gr projectiles. The real advantage of the 7.62x51 is the cartridge length in automatic weapons. The shorter case makes extraction easier.

      30-06 has a lot more ass than .308, it really starts to show when you do steel penetration testing, the 30-06 will typically pen .150" thou deeper than a .308. That's a lot.

    Almost double deformation + still better penetration says that effect on target was/would be significantly more deady for 30-06.

    • @Cloud_Seeker
      @Cloud_Seeker 10 місяців тому +1

      Just a question here. Why do you assume that better penetration is more deadly? If you are not going to fight body armor, having that much penetration is not really a good thing. Then you just have to care about what you shoot behind the target, and how much meat you destroy.
      What is more important is what it does to the body once it hits. Not how many wooden boards it can penetrate. From what I can see, picking between 308 and 30-06 is like picking between Coke and Pepsi. Almost no difference between them and does the same exact job as each other. Only that one is slightly more cheaper than the other.

    • @balkicroatia
      @balkicroatia 10 місяців тому

      @@Cloud_Seeker Said that bullet is more deformed (better energy transform) still together with better penetration. This means for sure more deadly if you understand basics of balistics.

    • @Cloud_Seeker
      @Cloud_Seeker 10 місяців тому

      @@balkicroatia Actually. It is worse that it has better penetration at that point. You need to understand the basics of physics. If the bullet penetrated to a higher degree that means it dispersed less energy where you actually want it to. If it is better penetrate the body, it means less energy stay in the body as it has more energy to penetrate and leave the body.
      This is why lead is such a good material to make bullets out of. Unlike steel it deformed easily which it disperse the energy quickly and is more likely to actually stay in the body. The less of the energy escape the body the better. A steel bullet does not transfer energy as well. That is why you need larger steel pellets in a shotgun shell than if you use lead. The steel pellets need to be bigger to be as deadly as the smaller lead pellets.
      Also saying "more deformed (better energy transform)" is not correct. You are not looking at WHERE it deformed the most. The bullet can have been mostly intact when it actually mattered. You are looking at a bullet that has reached the very end of its course. Not when it actually was inside the body.
      You are doing a lot of fallacies here that are not necessarily true. I have pointed out that a 30-06 is just about as good in killing a Moose as a 6.5 Swed is. A 6.5 Swed is a weaker bullet. So to argue that the 30-06 is a better bullet is just kind of stupid. The differences are in most realistic situations not that important unless you are trying to shoot things with body armor.
      To make penetration tests using cinder blocks, wooden planks or ballistic gels all kind of miss the whole point of it. What you should look at is not how well a bullet deforms or how far it penetrate. You should look at what the effect on the body is.

    .308 is the civilian version of 7.62x51, which was intentionally developed to be a shorter, higher pressure version of the 30-06 military ball used in the M1 Garand. There is nothing surprising about the two cases driving a military ball weight (147-150 gr) bullet to equivalent performance. 30-06 really only outperforms .308 when you start to use bullets of 180 gr or larger.

I’m going to suggest and earthen mound for a million times reasons, least of which is the safety of others. In addition, there’s a huge field behind your line of fire that at any time could be occupied by someone out and about (kids). I’m not there so I don’t know how safety conscious you are. I’m sure you want to grow your channel, I’m sure putting a small fortune into your weapons and ammo. Take it one step further, invest in safety, invest in being overly cautious. You're making a very wide and rather baseless assumption here. For all you know, that is HIS Private Property and you are being more of a "Karen" than an actual "Caring" observer.
      Perhaps your concern would be better served if you had made an intelligent inquiry regarding the property and who has access to it rather than making the assumption that Joe Public can just wander onto it at will!
      That subtle condescending line of BS you lay out here so eloquently is an insult to this young man and his honest intentions. You just naturally "assume" that he is being "unsafe" because you see what you want to see so that you can have what you believe is an opportunity to criticize, but you do not have all of the facts surrounding this circumstance/action/location! You see what a video presents and that is not an entirely clear and absolute picture of the surroundings beyond the subject of what is being presented in the video.
      I am willing to wager that this young man is very safety conscious and goes out of his way to insure the safety of others at all times. I observe nothing in this video that remotely indicates otherwise, nor suggests that he needs dressing down by anyone regarding "safety".

      Either you're thinking of a different projectile, your talking about stacking shots in the same hole 5-6 times or the tree was rotted into corkwood... SMK's are thin-jacketed, non-bonded, and terrible penetrators, hence why they are horrible game bullets for anything other than varmint. I'd believe a plain old M80 ball round would do it through maybe a 14" live tree, but no way on a 40" and fmj's are a lot less likely to deform/shatter than an SMK.

    150 grains is not the 30-06's best Bullet Weight - you're just wasting powder and carrying excess rifle/cartridge weight .. the 30-06 will outperform the 308 at 180 - 220 Grains .. especially with a modern Ballistically Aerodynamic Boat-tail Bullet ..

      Oh I know 180gr. Bullets shoot/group better than the 150gr. Bullets, my plan is to reload 200gr. Bullets for this gun, but that still isn't going to stop me from having fun with 150gr. Bullet plinking, target practice, and so on... A Day out on the range is aways a fun day.

    Did I count wrong..cus I thought each bullet only went through 11 boards...The only different was the 30-06 stuck, shallowly I might add, in the 12th board, where as the .308 bounced off.

    This is entirely predictable. Judging from hornady loading data for 150gr .308 dia bullets:
    308win can achieve approx 2750fps
    30/06 can achieve approx 2950fps
    That is a 7.3% increase
    1.073 X 11 boards = 11.8 boards which matches your result.
    This math is oversimplified though... if you use energy at 5yds not velocity you get:
    308: 2500ftlb
    30/06: 2878ftlb
    which is a 15% increase... this would predict 1.15 X 11 = 12.7 boards
    which is not what happened. Notice though... the faster bullet produced a larger expanded mushroom diameter which means more damage to the boards it penetrated which caused more energy to dissipate which reduced the penetration.
    Some people like to claim equivalence between 308 and 30/06 which is an irrational claim by the numbers... What 308 is... is adequate for most hunting applications that people use 30/06 for. I personally like to hunt with 300WSM and 308WIN... The 30/06 sits almost halfway between these two in performance. The 30/06 is a sweet traditional caliber that is a great choice particularly if you wish to own only one hunting rifle for every type of north american game. Cheers.

      It,s false,i had testing on my 2 chrono and the 30-06 run at 2835 fps and the 308 run at 2763 with 24 inchs barrel,i,m very surprise.

      @@donaldbougie694 Individual results will always vary from book values depending on so many variables. 308WIN is an excellent cartridge indeed! When I want more, my go to is 300WSM which pushes 168gr TTSX to 2960fps. My 308 pushes 168gr ELDM to 2700fps and 150gr TTSX to 2800fps. out of a 20" barrel...Ain't nothing wrong with that!

    you slowed down the 3006 by having a brake on it.

    Stupid test. We all know that both will penetrate what they were designed for.

      It's not a stupid test,, get different results on different types and brands of bullets in the same caliber, the only way to find out test results is to try it out, and there's nothing stupid about it..

    Same bullet, different primers, different powder loads.
    This is mixing apples and oranges.
    Waste of time, not worth watching.

      Same primer, same powders, same bullets, even same pieces of wood.
