    Greg Suddreth, Paul Dunton class action law suit; New Jersey
    In Nov. 2011, a New Jersey federal judge tossed out a class action brought by 2 MB owners with this problem. The judge stated that the plaintiffs didn't have enough evidence to prove that MB knew about the problem and were hiding it to avoid paying repairs costs under limited warranty despite the fact that the plaintiffs presented a bulletin from MB informing technicians how to fix the very gear problem that this video is describing. I'm curious to see what the dealer I bought mine from says about it when I call him shortly. I have a feeling they knew about the defect since I bought it in late 2010 and the bulletin was out there and the class action had been filed. Regardless of the outcome of the case, it is obvious that Mercedes Benz knew the sprockets would come off prematurely and so did the dealers.

      they knew from day-1 what would happen to soft steel in an engine 😂
      Now that this is all sayed and done, Benz is using soft chains that stretch prematurely along with loose tensioners that bang on the chain from low pressure.
      If Benz was really trying to build good cars they would not be on par with VW sub-quality.
      Circling the drain with:
      Plastic pulleys,
      plastic timing covers,
      soft chains
      short lived lubricants
      economy sized gaskets
      etc ...
      hence the steep depreciation clearly indicating lack of real value

    I discovered many codes (MB '06, c230, 6-cyl, 145k miles) when I took possession of the car from my daughter. P0016, P0017, P0301 thru P0304 (1-4 cyl. misfires), and 2 system lean codes. I had my mechanic replace the spark plugs, ignition coils, and intake manifold (broken flapper assembly, various holes) which took care of the misfires. Now, I am learning about these 2 wonderful codes you are discussing here. I doubt my mechanic can do this job as it took him 6 weeks to do the plugs, coils, and IM. It's research time before I decide what to do. I already had a rotor/brake job done $850, replaced 2 bent rims, 2 new tires, and an oil change. And now this? The car drives, but not like it should. Should I sell it? Part it out? I would appreciate your opinion. The body looks pretty good, very sexy looking car. I have about $3 grand in repairs/upkeep now, not counting $3500 in payments over the last year. It's been an expensive lesson and maybe I should get it off my balance sheet while I still have one.

    so if my timing is correct then its going to be cam sensors? and where do the VVT solenoids come in to play with this? ive heard of this issue being fixed by replacing those

    • @MercedesBenzTechs
      @MercedesBenzTechs  2 роки тому

      Cam sensors probably not since they do read the timing.. it can be the advance timing actuators or pulsation plates in front of the cam gears..

  • @petediegan2794
    @petediegan2794 2 роки тому

    @David: unless your engine is less than 80K miles, why go through all the troubles of replacing this, replacing that-but not swap out for an engine with less than 100K miles? My car has 163K, code 1208. However at 305 degree, intake cam (inner) is at center, outlet cam (outer) is off center. What exactly does that mean?

    • @MercedesBenzTechs
      @MercedesBenzTechs  2 роки тому +1

      It sounds like you are off timing.. but I agree you can just swap the engine, they are much cheaper today than they were 10 years ago..

      @David: I love my C300 which has almost no other issue and would like to keep it for a few more years. Now, P0017 is gone (after replaced magnet, sensor and wiring harness). However, P0016 occasionally comes back randomly every 5-10 days despite its stamp is right at center which should not be the cause in the first place? I am going to replace the pigtail wiring harness (similar to how I resolve the P0017) and then doing engine flush, replace with 0W-20 oil hopefully for the cam actuator/phaser to work more smoothly. What do you think?

      @MBT of Atlanta Mercedes Master Techs: I had a little bit different sequence: used to be P0016 and P0017. After replaced magnet, sensor and wiring on exhaust side, now P0017 is gone (despite its stamp is retard by half a tooth). On the intake side; however, despite stamp is at center, magnet and sensor have been replaced too-but then P0016 still occurs randomly every 5-10 days or 100-200 miles? Could old oil leak got into the pigtail wiring harness to create that random P0016 for no good reason-while engine run without any issue whatsoever? Thank you for your thought.

    Now I know why the finance manager at Bill Holt in Canton, Ga. wanted me to purchase the extended warranty so bad. I plainly remember the awful look on his face when I declined it. It wasn't the usual, "OK, you'll be fine without it". It was "You seriously need to get this extended warranty, no joke", shaking his head in dismay at my decision. Not that it would have made any difference unless it cover for 150K miles. And who know if they would have even covered this failure?

      Mike Mcfarland it’s the engine temperature sensor and it is a little loose, it’s normal but it shouldn’t turn the engine off, something else turning your engine off, check your crack shaft sensor wires, make sure they don’t touch the block.

    @MBT Dave: instead of “retard”, my M272 shows right intake camshaft is in fixed 36.2 degree advanced? Funny thing is, at low speed, it fluctuates 0-36 degree well; even at high speed, it advanced to 20-30 degree only. But then when I slow down, it moves back to idle position (advanced max at 36.2 degree) and then got stuck there?? What do you think is the problem? I am guessing Cam adjuster worn (especially the pin and area around the pin)?

    It has been all over the forums for years now since 2008; many were failing within 50-60,000 miles. Some were under warranty, many just outside. I hope my issue gets resolved in a civilized manner. I wonder what the top heads at MB were thinking when they first realized they had this huge issue with the M272 & M273 engines and the potential cost to their company. Of course, the judge isn't going to let the consumers win over the big motor boys because they are all sucking on the same titties. When you've got hundreds or thousands of MB owners complaining and the part failing all over the world, why wouldn't you recall the autos and fix the problem? That is the right thing to do, isn't it? So the lesson here is do your research before you buy, because I didn't and I wish I had. Avoid buying new cars from dealers. Buy used cars that have a solid track record. I think Hondas would hold up pretty good but I'm no expert. I doubt MB will meet me half way on this based on their record. But we'll see.

I noticed timing numbers on balancer and I know those numbers are supposed to be positioned in a certain spot. I am unaware of where it was positioned before bolt came loose. I see the notch on the engine that these numbers are supposed to line up with I was told I could only have to re-tighten crank bolt, but what number on the balancer is supposed to line up with notch on engine. asap response please I am without my car and I'd like to try and fix it myself because I can't afford a mechanic
