thanks, you just saved me a lot of money,a private seller that was selling one for $3,599 and said they reduced it from 5,500 due to the check engine light being on,and they said the problem was the cam positioning sensor, Thanks!!!!
Hi I visit so many work shop and they till me other things.but when I visit a special shop they till me the same what you show us.really waw. You are really professional.Thanks.
Thanks for the videos. Excellent explanation overall, unfortunately I'll have to go through this whole process for my '08 C350 with 150,000 km. As per my understanding nowadays they sell a full rebuild kit which solves the issue, hopefully after that will be fixed.
3:05 No need to remove the A/C compressor, just unbolt it from the engine and leave it with the car when removing the engine. That's what I did with mine which is the 272 motor. No need to evacuate then recharge the A/C gas that way. I't also makes the job quicker and easier. The power steering pump came out with the engine but in hindsight I should have checked to see if that could have been left with the car as well, it looks as if it could have been left.
I got e350 212 engine has 135k miles now running great only couple minor problems such some sensors, belt tensioner, idle pulley, now it has steering pump leak so engine , transmission is great
I have this problem with my car 2006 C230. What happens if I don't fit it? Was that engine running without any teeth on the sprocket? My car feels like it is running fine. If I do nothing and just keep driving will the engine eventually stall? not start? explode? I know that tuners do balance shaft deletes to get more performance. If there are no teeth on the sprocket and the balance shaft isn't spinning, the engine will run rougher, but is it still drive able? I have heard that it could theoretically jump a tooth on the cams and pistons could hit the valves and ruin the engine but I've never seen an actual occurrence if this happening, just speculation. Thanks
We called the dealer to see if our w211 was affected by that balance shaft issue and they told us no, our car was not affected with that problem. Car doesn’t want to start and we do have the p0016 & p0017 codes. At first I thought it was the fuel regulator. Replaced it and car still doesn’t turn on. There’s plenty of fuel pressure and the car turns on with starting fluid. Installed a new CPS too.
I have a 2006 C230 w203 that was manufactured in 2005 with the M272 egine. Is this in the bad production timeline??? My car just hit 200,000 miles with only minor issues. I've recently had the CEL turned on for the last 3-4K miles with a bunch of these error codes. I'll replace sensors and solenoids before to make sure its not an electrical issue.
Hi there david a had problem with my e350 2006 engine and gear box lake you told me in your video how to check p0016 and p0017 fault code all the circle right replace the oil but the code still there what should i do? And also my gear box after renew transmission fluid the gear won’t shift poease advise
Hi David. I just want to ask if the code remains and we not do this huge job to adjust the balancer, it can affect on the engine life, or it will create a bigger problem in the future?. I have a2006 e 280 car and it shows the check engine light and it shows the same code. Can I leave it as it is without repairing. Pls reply
I have an 2006 C350 with 183,000 miles, I thought I was out of the woods with this high of mileage but... nope! Although I'm not getting P0016/P0017, I'm getting P0014/P0024 (incorrect position of exhaust camshaft left bank/right bank) as well as P0009. I definitely suspect camshaft balancer correct? parked the car for a few weeks, fired her up and the CEL is gone, and she's running smooth for the time being. but this must be a temporary condition right?
Hey friend I have a c280 with the same problem, I’ve checked it at 305 degrees and it’s off center on the further right side. My question is would u wanna fix mine lol
hello I have a 2006 c230 and I have a camshaft position sensor code for the right bank. a P0022, P0368 , I was driving the car and all of a sudden it turned off, and now it won't start, It keeps burning a fuse I belive its number 53 for the ignition shutoff. any idea what it might be?
what is the cost for this type of work on a C280 model with 98k miles on it. The error Codes p0016 and -0017 are showing up. I dont own the car bought as i'm contemplating to buy it but wanted to know what the price would be to get it fixed.
Is the problem a different/inferior metal used for that sprocket only? From what I have seen its always that sprocket that's wears, you also need to replace oil pump, etc. I now see why MB has such a low resale after a few years, its one built in problem after another, years ago I thought about an ML 320/350 but glad I purchased my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2, 147,000 miles and NO problems, reliable and basic compared to newer vehicles, a bit of extra gas and some extra vibration is worth it with problems like that- I read theV-8 has a removeable/replaceable sprocket which makes life easier
yes, M273 V-8 engine just has idler sprocket in the front of the engine, unlike M272 V-6 which has balancer shaft going from front of the engine to the rear of the engine.
Hi, thank you for your videos, specially the one on the camshaft balancer P0016, P0017 and P0019. I have 2006 Mercedes Benz e350 wagon 4matic that i bought from auction and after diagnosis, I found out that those 3 codes won't go away. Do you think the Balancer is the problem here? Even though I've changed all sensors. Please advise. Thank you!
I heard that you are suppose to replace the oil pump. Did you replace it? And besides the chain and balance shaft what else did you replace? I have a 06 c230 with the same problem.
Yes, need to change the pump, the metal shavings goes inside, I recommend to get an engine from a newer model, don’t rebuild this one, you can buy good engine for $2k
I have an 06 e350 4matic. with p0016 and 17 codes. It seems like less work to ust swap out the motor. Can you put an 09 m272 into an 06. 09 didnt have the balance shaft issue. Great video thanks for posting.
i have a 2006 e 350 with the same camshaft balancer problem code p0017. Mercedes would charge me around 4-5 thousand. Is it the best option?. I appreciate if you can give a reply. Dr.SB

On a 2013 Mercedes C250 when you open your hood there's a hose there and it has a tear in it.. what is the proper name for that hose.. one mechanic said intake is there a such thing??
There are few hoses, if it’s a double hose on passenger side it’s a cooling line, if it’s in front it’s a breather for positive ventilation that tap into the intake hose
Hi my buddy just bought E350 2006 and has check engine. I hooked it up with OBD2 and it shows exactly this problem 0016 0017 and 00393 so I opened it up and saw that position is off the center when 305 digress is set up. So It is balancer off and needs to be replaced right? So can you change this balancer without pulling engine all the way out? It looks like you have to pull the engine out for sure to be able to get there. Can you let me know. I will watch yours videos of course but please let us know. Thank you for your answer and videos
Pajunk320 you can NOT do this job without taking the engine out!! The shaft is about 24" long and you can't open the screw on the back without removing the rear main seal housing.. after you remove the engine you'll see why you can't do it any other way
Mercedes Benz Techs hey buddy, I have the repair kit from mercedes from this job, new chain tensioner but no new chain.. is it crucial to replace the chain too?
I have a 2006 Mercedes-benz cls500 when the car reaches normal temp. It will shut off like someone has turn the key off. Then the car will not crank at all. If I wait 30 to 45 mins the car will start right back up with no problems . I order a crankshaft postion senor switch .I was hoping this would correct the problem . Have you ever heard of this thank Jason
David ! i'm new here. I just purchased a C230 4 doors 2007 and the car runs good starts super fast , the only thing I notice is like not a lot of power when you drive and sometimes like the engine misfire, but since I have no experience with this model.. im not sure how normally runs. I've got codes 0016 and 0017 , are those codes due to the "big engine repair" or beside thes 2 codes I need to get other for the chain balancer etc... .or may be the solenoids or position sensors ? thanks
i wish i saw this video a couple of years ago i put the code reader on my mercedes e350 2007 myself and sure enough P0016, P0017 codes popped up after paying $7000 for this vehicle. i now have a $7000 problem on my hands
I have a question about the 722.9 transmission conductor plate is it possible that I could get one from another car and recalibrate the scn number so it will work on another vehicle
murad kuychiyev have it diagnosed by a Mercedes repair shop, it can be the sensors on the cams the magnets adaptation on the ME or bad timing chain, the good news is that your car is outside the bad shaft production date
thank you man. I think sale car .It was sensor magnetic. I changed both sides and didn't go to Mercedes shop. Check engine light I'm erased after that good. I don't know will see.
I got s550 09 with p0016. It needed an oil change that was long over due. I put new 0w-40 oil in it and changed the oil filter. Light came back on. Going to change the sensors for camshaft & crankshaft next. Any suggestions?
Why change the sensor?? It’s doing what it meant to do.. telling you your timing is off… first make sure your battery is good if it is you may need timing chain.., how many miles?
@@MercedesBenzTechs my battery should be good, I drive the car daily. No issues but the engine light / code. When I reset the code it comes on after a while usually. Doesn’t come on right away.
@@MercedesBenzTechs it had a long over due oil change I think , I just recently changed the oil. Maybe it’s still some dirty oil in there? And how much does a timing chain replacement cost?
@@MercedesBenzTechs I googled the solutions of code p0016 and it suggested to first change oil. Then change camshaft ocv, then crankshaft position sensor then cam shaft position sensor
My 2007 ML350 woth 60K miles has the same problem. Do you Mercedez have upgraded the crank shaft to fix the problem? I hate to fix it and the problem comes back. Any advice?
My R class had the Balance shaft fixed at 30,000 miles. Im now at 142000 miles getting a P0016. Would that be a one time fix or overtime it will fail??
This is a very explicit and helpful video. Thank you for sharing. I have a 2007 ML350 with this codes (P0016 and P0017) and want to rebuild the engine. Must I take out the transmission before taking out the engine? (Well, I thought I could take only engine out). Do you have any resource like videos, images or text that could guide in removing the engine from this car? Thank you in advance.
Fidelis Kaspa very easy job, remove the transmission first after that drain all fluids including AC, disconnect all hose and wire harness hold engine with engine hoist, disconnect power steering hoses and transmission hoses from radiator, unbolt motor mounts and hoist engine out, install in reverse order.
Thanks MBT. I'm surprised to know that it is easy to get out the transmission :). This is a first time and I didn't study that in detail yet. Does that requires taking out the exhaust pipe system as well? I was finding it real hard getting to the 2 torx (rusty) bolts that hold the CAT to the manifold tail in particular the left/driver's side. Does removing the transmission make access to these bolts easier?
Fidelis Kaspa yes, take transmission out first and yes you do have to take the muffler out, but it’s really easy, get extension on your wrench, it will make it easier to get to the bolts
David- Someone onyoutube said that the balance shaft/sprocket was improved since I think he said 2008 and up so the newer engines are not effected, is that true? Thinking of a clean, full documented and low mileage ML 350, will that have the same problem if say its a 2010?
I have a 2009 c300 when I bought the car back in 2013 the car only had about 45k. I drove it for like 5k and car start shaking and give me the engine light when I took it to the shop engine light was off keep driving did the same thing i got the codes I replace the sensors not knowing this problem seem to be fix but later on came back I replace all 4 sensors and didn't know what was the problem until I found d your video, thank you guys I wish I would of known this right when I just had bought the car. Anyways I would like to know what parts do I need to replace since I have to open the motor should I just replace just the balancer and the wear off sproket? Or should I replace everything from chains, sprocket ect? What's the price of this parts?
krloz081 if you have over 100k on the engine go ahead and change timing chain and guide as well if less than 100k, call a local dealer and ask them for the balance shaft kit, will run you about $1,200 retail it includes the shaft, oil pump, all seals and gaskets, sensors etc.. I recommend to replace water pump thermostat as well and have your intake manifold runner bracket changed at the same time, couple of more hours of labor and few dollars in parts but will save a whole lot of headache in the future. Good luck
Thank you. Yes my car has over 100k, would you recommend me to change my engine since a used engine its about 2500$ with a year warranty and it will probably be faster then rebuilding it? my car also won't turn on, nothing works not the windows, stereo, dash, nothing only the lock and unlock and thats only with the remote, the dash only reads key not detected remove key thats all it does, i read this is also a regular problem with MB and i need to replace my switch is that true? wold that fix the problem? thank you so much guys
krloz081 I can write a book about what might cause electrical issues in your car.. a good technician will test all your wiring and find out what's the issue, its way to complicated to start and explain you what to look for but always start with the basic, fuses, relays etc.. good luck
Hey David I am in ATL were is your shop. I replace the actuator on my C300 manifold 2 days ago now I have and p2237 code ( oxygen sensor bank 1) and a p0607 code ( control module ) what you think could be wrong. I'm trying to save money by avoiding the dealer
I have a question I'm looking at a 2006 350 v6 4 matic. The owner had this procedure done at 65k and now it's at 98k. Are the replacements just as weak as the stock part? How long will the new balancer last if I buy it. Please respond. I need help
Windsor Griffing the new parts should be good however, I recently found out that the cam sprocket should be replaced as well both on intake and exhaust so it Really depends on the quality of the work that was performed on the engine
Windsor Griffing open the cap for the engine oil fill and look at the teeth on the sprockets where the timing chain is seating on, look very very close, do they look worn out? If they are they will have to be replaced, it’s much cheaper than replacing the balance shaft if they look good you are clear.
You are right man Mercedes what's up with that?!?!? Make a little better cars:) so disappointed from Mercedes making cars not so reliable as they used to from the start till mid 2000 ... I have to stick with Audi since they leading now I think
If it gets to the point where their's metal in the oil pan, isn't that motor doomed for ever now ?I would say it is a risky thing, i would replace the motor or do it before that shaft fails and contaminates the engine.
This is insane!!! Great video! i watched the one before this one on this motor, so what actually cause this problem of the teeth grinding off? Is it using cheap oil like you said? Today i was checking out a R-class came home and found your video. It also had code p0325 and p0330 including this p0016&17, It also had 6 owners crazy! It's a 2006 with 163k, I'm no longer interested in it. They are such nice vehicles.
Emad Semrin how much oil did you put back in?? Did you make sure to put the overfill plug back? What tool did you use to fill up the fluids? Did you use Mercedes authorized fluids
Before you go jumping on Mercedes ASS. For some technical reason and it may have something to do with the engine control module's response. this M272 engine produces a lot of backlash on the timing chain accessory. possibly a few lines of codes and different metal would solve the problem. This is very unusual defect for a major car company like Mercedes Benz but some of these engines with proper oil servicing and not driven like "sea biscuit" have lasted a long time with no damage.
Love your videos! Great channel! I have a question I hope you could answer for me! I found a 2004 E320 4matic wagon in absolutely beautiful condition with 97k on it with a real clean car fax for sale for 6,847 is the engine in this year of Mercedes safe or a problem?
I have a 2007 E350 4matic and its giving me code p0016 and 17. However, Everything seems to be in the center. The car starts and the engine is misfiring.
Great video! My Brother-in-law has an 06 ML 350. just threw this code(p0016). It won't start. I saw another video on this code. In that video, the timing marks on the top two gears were not aliened. As you said in your video, if there are teeth in the oil pan it is the problem you are fixing here. I don't want to check for the teeth, he has had nothing but trouble with this thing, HAHA! From what I have found, it could be an easer fix (the p0016 code) than what you are doing here, is that correct? Thanks in advance.
Just wow... wth... I have the same codes and have this problem... no way I can get that fixed.. :( Wish there was a way to do it another way or cheaper.. Thank you for sharing.
@Mickey Michelle World For this issue.. this is the only way to fix it. I ended up selling the car. I explained the issue before selling it. Too bad I couldn't fix it. : (
Hello my friend .. I got p0016 and p0017 and i tried to fix out what is happening and i found that my camshafts are very good and balanced well and there is no any jump of teeth in the chain So i think this is the problem
Would you be able to help me do this I’ll help you rebuild it wanna learn hands on my car is having this problem but I wanna fix it and learn how I’ll pay you
i feel so bad now for buying this garbage motor. how can it be defective with 100k km? if i spend money fixing it, means i will have to do again in next 100k? i thought mercedes engines could run 200k at least...
thanks, you just saved me a lot of money,a private seller that was selling one for $3,599 and said they reduced it from 5,500 due to the check engine light being on,and they said the problem was the cam positioning sensor, Thanks!!!!
They got me. Now the car is useless

Get remanufactured motor instead.

David, btw would it be necessary to change out the water pump when doing this job?
Hey David, if i replace then camshafts and valves, how can i set the proper timing back on a Mercedes E-220?
thank you for the information I wish I never had bought it off eBay now I have to return it

I've got codes 0016 and 0017 , are those codes due to the "big engine repair" or beside thes 2 codes I need to get other for the chain balancer etc...
.or may be the solenoids or position sensors ?
thanks
Abel ramos I'm not sure without following the diagnosis procedures... but if I have to ASS-U-ME (lol) I would say that your car is infected...
i wish i saw this video a couple of years ago i put the code reader on my mercedes e350 2007 myself and sure enough P0016, P0017 codes popped up after paying $7000 for this vehicle. i now have a $7000 problem on my hands
I have a question about the 722.9 transmission conductor plate is it possible that I could get one from another car and recalibrate the scn number so it will work on another vehicle
diy scan tool no, it is calibrated with the key ME ISM and ignition switch
Good video. I have mercedes C300 2008 v6 engine. Error code is P0025 and P0026 . Can you tell me please what's wrong.
murad kuychiyev have it diagnosed by a Mercedes repair shop, it can be the sensors on the cams the magnets adaptation on the ME or bad timing chain, the good news is that your car is outside the bad shaft production date
thank you man. I think sale car .It was sensor magnetic. I changed both sides and didn't go to Mercedes shop. Check engine light I'm erased after that good. I don't know will see.
Hello dear
This balance i can do same with cadillac cts 2008. Because i have same codes
@@MercedesBenzTechs 94k
Anyone know how to align the Balance sprocket with the Copper link on the timing chain in a M273 V8 (no shaft) just the Idler Balance Sprocket
My 2007 ML350 woth 60K miles has the same problem. Do you Mercedez have upgraded the crank shaft to fix the problem? I hate to fix it and the problem comes back. Any advice?
Фашики решили проблему. Так что заказывай ремкомплект и к Давыду на ремонт!
My R class had the Balance shaft fixed at 30,000 miles. Im now at 142000 miles getting a P0016. Would that be a one time fix or overtime it will fail??
Probably timing chain
What about the p0024
Mister's permission...etc p0017I've replaced the camshaft sensor several times and it's the same
This is a very explicit and helpful video.

Thanks a bunch.
This will be very helpful when next I get back to that.
Your availability and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Would you be able to give me a parts list on this job. Mercedes dealer acts like it is a secret or something.
Thank you so much for your reply!
David- Someone onyoutube said that the balance shaft/sprocket was improved since I think he said 2008 and up so the newer engines are not effected, is that true?
Thinking of a clean, full documented and low mileage ML 350, will that have the same problem if say its a 2010?
Yes it is good, problem was corrected by Mercedes on all engines manufactured after June of 2007
Thank you.
Good luck
Thank you.
Yes my car has over 100k, would you recommend me to change my engine since a used engine its about 2500$ with a year warranty and it will probably be faster then rebuilding it?
my car also won't turn on, nothing works not the windows, stereo, dash, nothing only the lock and unlock and thats only with the remote, the dash only reads key not detected remove key thats all it does, i read this is also a regular problem with MB and i need to replace my switch is that true? wold that fix the problem?
thank you so much guys
krloz081 I can write a book about what might cause electrical issues in your car.. a good technician will test all your wiring and find out what's the issue, its way to complicated to start and explain you what to look for but always start with the basic, fuses, relays etc.. good luck
hi david i have 2006 mercedes e350 i have that code p0016 but i checked the all marks on the cam shift they all even so what do you think the problem
It can be a sensor.. Have it checked.

+Mercedes Benz Techs what goes wrong with the sprocket? If it wasn't done with the balancer what kind of danger am I looking at?
Windsor Griffing open the cap for the engine oil fill and look at the teeth on the sprockets where the timing chain is seating on, look very very close, do they look worn out? If they are they will have to be replaced, it’s much cheaper than replacing the balance shaft if they look good you are clear.
thank u for this video... is this problem present in ml 63 model 2009?, if yes.. which model it is solves? ?
Ahmad Ibrahim no, not on AMG engines
What is your openion about ml350 2013
Ahmad Ibrahim no, not on AMG motors, only 272 engines V6 from 2006-2007
Ahmad Ibrahim no known issues so far...
Thanks for your response
How many miles ?
You are right man Mercedes what's up with that?!?!? Make a little better cars:) so disappointed from Mercedes making cars not so reliable as they used to from the start till mid 2000 ... I have to stick with Audi since they leading now I think
If it gets to the point where their's metal in the oil pan, isn't that motor doomed for ever now ?I would say it is a risky thing, i would replace the motor or do it before that shaft fails and contaminates the engine.
ltwargssf R yes but most times it will get trapped in the filter since it goes from the pump to filter first but I did have one engine beyond repair.
Hello, I had the p0016 this week and I clear the code. The code is gone still today. It can be the sensor you think?
did it come back?
Same problem with my E350 2006 model can i bring to your shop?
thanks
Jimme Romvs off course. We are in 6020 Buford highway Norcross GA 30071
Haha I'm in CA
This is insane!!! Great video! i watched the one before this one on this motor, so what actually cause this problem of the teeth grinding off? Is it using cheap oil like you said? Today i was checking out a R-class came home and found your video. It also had code p0325 and p0330 including this p0016&17, It also had 6 owners crazy! It's a 2006 with 163k, I'm no longer interested in it. They are such nice vehicles.
No, not bad oil just poor design by Mercedes
Mercedes Benz Techs any word on r class cdi? I hope it not a bad engine or a headache
hi I have a problem with Mercedes-Benz E350 I change transmission oil and my transmission doesn't work what I can do
Emad Semrin how much oil did you put back in?? Did you make sure to put the overfill plug back? What tool did you use to fill up the fluids? Did you use Mercedes authorized fluids
I have the 1.8L 4 cly. P0017 code Can't find any information on this engine
David, where are you located? I need this done to my mercedes.
Love your videos! Great channel! I have a question I hope you could answer for me! I found a 2004 E320 4matic wagon in absolutely beautiful condition with 97k on it with a real clean car fax for sale for 6,847 is the engine in this year of Mercedes safe or a problem?
rich santia this engines are bulletproof if the car was maintained on time you should get 250k miles out of this engine
I have a 99 ml 320 doing the same thing with all the like the dashboard and it will not crank
so what are my options
What would be a good price to pay for this repair?
$5,000-$8,000 depends who does it.
How much this job cost , I have a same problem 2006 c230
Cheaper to get a used engine than rebuild this one. All together about $4k-$6k
THANKS DAVID
My 2007 c230 is not starting and has this p0016 code
Thank you
Does this apply for the 08 c300?
11111111 111111111 No. only 2006-2007 engines
great video
Alfredo A G thanks
Any idea on an estimate of what a job like this cost?
5-6k with a used engine..
What is a good price to pay for a job like this?
To do it right, around $7.5k but you can just replace the engine with a newer one with low miles, prices can vary depending on quality of work
I have a 2007 E350 4matic and its giving me code p0016 and 17. However, Everything seems to be in the center. The car starts and the engine is misfiring.
Ahmad Saleem you need to rebuild the engine
Is this happened because of code P0012?
😅😁😁 thanks sharing brother ✌️
How much you charge for fixing this problem?
Around $7k
Great video! My Brother-in-law has an 06 ML 350. just threw this code(p0016). It won't start. I saw another video on this code. In that video, the timing marks on the top two gears were not aliened. As you said in your video, if there are teeth in the oil pan it is the problem you are fixing here. I don't want to check for the teeth, he has had nothing but trouble with this thing, HAHA! From what I have found, it could be an easer fix (the p0016 code) than what you are doing here, is that correct? Thanks in advance.
All 2006 and 2007 272 engines had this issue and need to be rebuild, in your case if the chain is still on try changing the sensors first
@@MercedesBenzTechs Thanks a lot. The engine has been rebuilt. I don't know all the details, but it was totally out and broken down for the rebuild.
How can I check if the chain is still on…I did the first video and they weren’t Aline
i have p001600 and p017127 code w204 1.8 mercedes what do you think sir ?
Check your timing, maybe sensors or timing chain.
@@MercedesBenzTechs thank you !
@@MercedesBenzTechs actually i just changed triger chain and cams, didnt change the sensors do you thing sensors try to adapt new chain and camshatfs
belahalok yes, it should be good.
hey have a problem with my E350 06 I live in South Florida I want to get in contact with you
Richard practice welder call me tomorrow at the office 770-837-3888
Just wow...
@Mickey Michelle World Nope. I had an 07 c230. Sorry bud. This sux. Good luck!
Hello my friend ..
I got p0016 and p0017 and i tried to fix out what is happening and i found that my camshafts are very good and balanced well and there is no any jump of teeth in the chain
So i think this is the problem
What year and model is your car
Just replace the engine at this point
como se busca el problema
Would you be able to help me do this I’ll help you rebuild it wanna learn hands on my car is having this problem but I wanna fix it and learn how I’ll pay you
Good job
I got p0016, is any one know how to fix it,
Where is that code?
i feel so bad now for buying this garbage motor. how can it be defective with 100k km? if i spend money fixing it, means i will have to do again in next 100k? i thought mercedes engines could run 200k at least...
No you wouldn't have to do it again, the updated parts don't wear out.
