    The problem it's NOT the oil pump or cheap oil, it's the quality of the metal (to soft) they used make the balance shaft, well documented everywhere. Great video, tks.

      I wish someone would be "freaking awsome" showing me how to replace the CRANKSHAFT position sensor on a 2005 C230 Kompressor. Everything I seen so far is useless. The sensor is down below the left rear corner of the cylinder head, but how the devil do I get in there?

    The "recommended oil" that manufacturers put on those stickers is only the highest bidder at the time it was produced. It doesn't mean it is the best oil for the car. It's all marketing. Mobil 1, Titan, Liqui Moly, Castrol, etc are all the same.

    I have my P0016/P0017 m272 engine swaped, which costs me $3K. Lucky that the problem showed up at 180K mi or 15 years later after i bought the car. I used engineer oil additive to prolong the wear and tear, which seems to work for me. After some premature wear and tear, the Bank #1 CAM timing is advanced and resulted in running hotter. Now everything is back to normal.

    Hi. My check engine light is on in my 2010 Mercedes GLK 350 4MATIC. I ran the test codes and comes back P0017. The car drives fine, other than little rough idle on a colder day. Not super rough. I erased the codes, had the oil changed and still comes back on after a few miles. Do you think I should replace the sensor or first do this test? I just need it to pass emissions here in ATL.
    Thanks

    Hi sir, I have a 06 CLK350 with 118k miles and I'm getting P0016/17 as well as p0021 codes. I also had misfire codes on the entire passenger side bank however the car had no misfires. I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs all around regardless and I'm still getting the misfire codes even though the car has little to no vibration and feels factory new. I don't think it is the timing shaft or Ballance shaft and I've just had the intake manifold replaced 8k miles ago and I've done everything I can to try and figure out my problem. I've disconnected the battery to reset the codes but they all still popped up when I reconnected it. The car is not sluggish or shaky at all and is still very peppy and I'm only getting a solid Check engine light. Do you have any recommendations as to what I should do? I'm truly stumped. Any response would be greatly appreciated.

  • @oda0111

    MB actually recommends using 0w40 for the M273&272 motors. High mileage versions might benefit from the jump to 5 from 0 weight but only if they eat oil, otherwise stick with the 0w. That's what I've been using on my 135k miles M273 for the past 4 years and it's perfect.

    I have a 2006 C230 with these codes. CEL has been on for a while with no negative effects. Recently, however, it started misfiring in cylinder 3 and 5, which was noticeable. I am going to replace coils, plugs and wires first to solve the misfire issue, but do you have any other thoughts? How necessary is the repair if the circles do not line up as you have shown in the video? Thank you!

    Very grateful for the informative video. Allowed me to rule out the infamous camshaft sprocket balancer issue. Wasn't certain if my ML350 was one of the ones affected, but after oil change with no evidence of metal shavings or pieces and then successfully performing the alignment procedure you provided, I was able to get my issue resolved by just replacing the 2 - bank 1 sensors. P0016 & P0017 codes have gone away and now I can get it smogged. Thank you!

Do you believe the camshaft adjuster magnets could be the issue? Hello David, I have a 2006 Mercedes ML350, I did all the checking you have mentioned and I have the two round marks you have mentioned, I seen one circle but did not see the other one, my questioned is can you tell me all the parts and gasket I would need to replace the balancer, I have a mechanic said he would do it, I just need the part list and gasket list. I already have the oil and filter, anti freeze, power steering fluid, I know those are the basic stuff. I just need to know so I can order the original parts for the job. By the way, your doing a good job, thank you for the tutorials.

    Hey David thanks for all your help. I have a question i just bought a 2007 Mercedes c280 4matic with 61k on it. Codes that have come up are p0023 and p0020 p0446 p0410. and random misfire codes on all cylinders. Most times its runs great but sometimes has trouble starting up sometimes cranks but doest start. Should i start by changing magnets? cam sensors on drivers side? looks like passenger side have already been replaced. My engine serial number is 272941 30 542953 so it doesn't fall under the problematic balance shaft issue if i understand correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks

    Hey is this the same process for 2010 cls550???

  • @ken5ism

    The cause is a gear on the balance shaft inside the motor made of inferior material that wears down after a short amount of time and causes the camshaft to lose it's alignment. Oil grade is for lubrication of the metal parts inside of the engine and slight cooling, only! But the video is correct to a certain degree.

    David, I was just wondering, can this also occur on a M273 V8 or is it mainly isolated to the M272 V6?

      @nelias7306 9 років тому

      ***** Thank you, good to know. I have a 2009 W221. No issues and hopefully it will never happen,but if I ever get a light and see the codes I'll know where to start

    • @nelias7306
      @nelias7306 9 років тому

      ***** You beat me to it! I researched the issue a bit and on mbworld.org someone had the TSB and the engine serial numbers affected:
      According to the TSB :
      Equipped with:
      M272 Engine Up to Serial No. 2729..30 468993
      M273 Engine Up to Serial No. 2739..30 088611.
      The material for the balance shaft sprocket and the timing chain guide
      wheel (idler) was modified on engines past the serial numbers listed
      above.
      I went to epconline.com and they allow you to access it free. I put in my VIN and got my Datacard. My serial number is after the 088611. Good to go :D

    Hello Mercedes Benz Techs, I have this problem 2 times. While driving, the check engine light comes up. I made a test with computer and the error was p0016 . I delete the error, and after 2 months it comes again, " check engine", this time i didn't made the test computer, after 1 miles, the "check engine light" was removed . But when i made the computer test , it was memorized the same error. What will be your opinion? do i have problem with the Cam shaft position?
    i have Mercedes ML 350, Year 2006, 58.000 Miles.
    I will preciate your opinion. thanks

    Good video. I went out of the country for a year, my car ( c230) had not been driven for 6 months. Battery died.. I replaced it, drove for about 5 minutes, car stopped ( steering wheel got tough to steer).. car starts but will shut down in a minute. Towed it to the Dealership diagnostic test didn't show anything major wrong apart from an inconclusive test on "CAM." Dealership says it will cost me $900 for their tech to check the "Cams"... I need your recommendations? Thanks.

      $900 to check the cams??? Hell no!! Takes 30 minutes! Why they need to check the cams? What year and how many miles?

    2006 Ml350 had balanced shaft done 4 years ago. Now have 130k and I pay extra attention to oil it was very low check engine line on today for last two days pulled code when changing the oil p0303 and p0016. Any ideas? My gas cap was loose. I tighten it.. Do think it could be the sensor this time and or the CEL on cylinder 3?

    • @MercedesBenzTechs
      @MercedesBenzTechs  8 років тому

      First take care of the misfire on cylinder 3, most likely coil went bad..after that clear codes and drive a little, depends on the quality of the work performed on your car..it might be several different issues but I wouldn't think it's the balance shaft if it was a new one

    Hello David
    Your video help me so much and saved me a lot of time.
    I have 2006 R350
    I had 2 trouble codes p0016 and p0017
    I removed the cane sensors and I put it in 305 degree and looked to see if the small circles aligned either the camshaft sensor wholes.
    It was perfectly aligned . It was right in the middle.
    I switched the camshaft sensors from the drives side to the passenger side. But I’m still getting the same trouble codes.
    Is it possible that the magnet sensors is the problem??

    Hello Mercedes Benz Techs. Wonderfull video, thanks for it. I have a C280 Avantgarde Sport 2006, and have the same vibration problem. The car runs OK but when in neutral vibration is there. They scanned it and said was a missfire. Could missalignment be the problem? Do I always have to check for 305 degrees alignmen? Thans

    • @MercedesBenzTechs
      @MercedesBenzTechs  6 років тому

      Iván Medina you need to check what causing the misfire first.. bad coil? Bad spark plug? Or out of timing? You need a professional diagnosis first

    Hello David, I own a 2006 Mercedes-Benz c280. The check engine turned on and teo codes showed up at the same time (p0015,p2768). Before it turned on I felt with time how the gears were shifting rough and it was getting worse and worse until the check engine turned on. Now it is stuck in a gear, i believe this all started when i changed the engine oil. What do you think the problem could be? Thank you have a good day

    hi guies
    WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON,
    Ive had the same code P0016 and P0017 when diagnosed,
    on a 2006 mercedes benz C280 4MATIC...
    there is no problem driving, but the engine tends to idle up and a rough noise when the car is parked,
    also does the above code involve or contribute to the steering issues??
    when on driving mode on the free way... there is no problem,
    only when the car is stationed or pulling out of a parking lot its hard to turn the steering wheel.
    any help is highly appreciated !
    GOD BLESS

    Hi David. Great Video. I have a 2006 ML350 V6 with 55,000 Miles, P0016 & P0017 diagnostic codes. Wondering where you are based and how much do you charge to fix this if the balancer needs replacement. Thanks.

    I have these codes after the sensors were replaced last week. (2006 W203 C280 with 65.000 miles.)
    If a M272 has this shaft failure, what is the damage risk when driving it without fixing? I need the car for vacation soon and my garage is closed after next week for vacation. Maybe it is wise to do new oil and filter?
    Thanks.

    Hi MBT, what would the symptoms be with someone who has this issue and ultimately needs a new balancer? I have a 2006 ML350...and at this point the cost of such a job outweighs the desire to put that kind of $$$ into the vehicle since it's Kelly Blue Book is probably $2000
    We have a series of issues from occasional hesitations or stuttering..but most of our issues seem electrical in nature especially if it rains out (faulty ground, fuse, etc..not sure).
