Ben Hogan's Hip Turn is THE BEST KEPT SECRET of the Golf Swing

  • Ben Hogan's hip turn in the golf swing is rarely discussed in golf swing instruction today but it remains to be one of the most valuable golf swing pieces that you need to know to be good at golf (the best kept secret of the golf swing). Ben Hogan's golf swing is often interpreted literally as "he wrote what he actually did". In reality, Ben Hogan wrote what he "felt". This leads to a lot of misconceptions about what he actually did in the golf swing. These golf swing misconceptions create problems for golfers looking to improve their golf games.
This episode looks at Ben Hogan's hips and how you can use his ACTUAL hip motion to improve your golf swing. To quote Happy Gilmore when talking about the golf swing, "It's all in the hips". This advice reigns true and there's a reason why Ben Hogan viewed the hips as the part of the golf swing that makes the golf swing AUTOMATIC. When you look at exactly how the hips work in the golf swing you will begin to see how Ben Hogan really felt and also understand the golf swing on a much deeper level. This episode will take your golf game to the next level.

Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

    Tom,
I had leveled out years ago and stopped playing with any regularity when my kids were born. When I did play, I would rarely keep score because I felt so disconnected and unable to improve. This summer my son turned 7 and took an interest in golf that rekindled my interest. After watching your videos and practicing on my backyard net, I finally feel like I understand a swing. I shot 88 this week on just my third full round of the year. Because of the understanding I got from your videos I was able to accurately identify and correct the couple of missed swings I had that day and not spiral into a bad round. I have never felt as confident in my golf swing. I am excited to play golf again and excited to keep score again. Thank you!

Thank you Mr. Saguto. I have only recently discovered your channel. Your content is some of the best I have seen. In going through some of your back videos, I particularly enjoyed your instruction on bunker play and wedge selection based on the type of sand. Tom, I have to say that the last video of you telling us how important the shoulder turn is helped me out so much. I was able to hit the range for a while just to pay attention to that. I then proceeded to play my next round, struck the ball much better and broke 80, which was one of my goals for the year. I still don't use a driver, but shooting 41-38 for 79 made my year so far. I really can't wait to get out to you for some in person lessons. Keep the tips coming!

I read a description of Pete Sampras’ serve as sliding into a restaurant booth. It is exactly this action except that I believe he does keep the flex in his trail leg so he can elevate high to hit the ball. Used this swing in 1973 and hit it 315 yards every time.

Mr. Hogan timelessly delivers phenomenal instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about Hogan’s swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. Thanks Tom, I like the way you demonstrate the mechanics of the swing. Ben Hogan’s swing is one of the most natural and to teach it is challenging enough. However, you break it it down so that it’s more easier to follow and practice. I’ve been following the videos for a while now and am definitely getting better club-ball contact. I do tend to hang back at impact sometimes but that’s due to tiredness after hitting so many balls 😂😆. The good thing now is that I very quickly realise I’m hanging back and can correct it.

I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!!
Mr. Hogan is recognized by many as being the greatest ball striker of all time, and yes - he certainly did make great contributions to the world of golf instruction and remains popular in that realm today. Of particular noteworthiness in this regard is his book "Five Lessons - the Modern Fundamentals of Golf". There's a lot of great information in that book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all - including myself - can learn well from. If we get Hogan right there is tremendous and timeless instructional value to be garnered!!
Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work, and keep that weight forward!!!

the illusion that there are `modern` methods to the golf swing
you have clearly dispelled tom, we have the same anatomy as
mr hogan, and he was the maestro ,from relentless study and
modification to the point you are now at, as much possible
error removed from the science of ball striking consistency,
the values are the same now ! thankyou maestro saguto jnr`

I sincerely appreciate your saying that, William!
The way I see it, we can either simply put the already existing natural laws to work and thereby build a powerful, body-friendly, repeatable, low-maintenance motion, or we can twist, morph, torque, contrive, and otherwise mess with the principles of physics, geometry, and human physiology in an effort to better suit some ill-conceived whims, all the while recognizing that at the point of impact those pre-existing laws are going to be the only things that matter to the ball!

Mr. Hogan is recognized by many as being the greatest ball striker of all time, and yes - he certainly did make great contributions to the world of golf instruction and remains popular in that realm today. There's a lot of great information in his Five Lessons book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all - including myself - can learn well from. If we get Hogan right there is tremendous and timeless instructional value to be garnered!!

      Hi Tom,
Here is a newer version of this lesson: ua-cam.com/video/bXV7g1PVxbA/v-deo.html
By the way, if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, sequential platform, please consider my online school. It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.
And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner.

After viewing your lesson I searched UA-cam for several Ben Hogan videos. He talks about several aspects in his 5 fundamentals book. It became vividly clear to me that the most dominant feature of his swing was the forward weight shift and tailbone movement toward the target. His tempo appears quick on those old films and his arms are close to his body. His backswing is compact. To me it’s clear that that hip move was the core of his swing. Thank you for giving this the attention it deserves.

Tom, you are an absolute genius and really good at teaching this. A cue that’s worked great for me is the feeling of crunching my right side to initiate the downswing. I think that’s sort of the same thing here with the “automatic starter”. I was at the range today and couldn’t miss a shot after this clicking. Absolutely blasting every iron 7i and above 200+ yards. Great stuff and keep up the content!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

I appreciate the kind words, Robbie, and I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you - awesome job incorporating it into your swing!!
"Crunching" the trail side is certainly an acceptable feel for triggering the downswing, and it is indeed one option that I teach. In fact, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

      The mat I use is a 3' x 5' Real Feel mat. Here's their website: www.realfeelgolfmats.com/
As for my practice net (in case you'd like to make one for your garage), it's a DIY job. We used this video as a starting point: ua-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/v-deo.html. We then redeployed an existing net that we had and made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs.
      I hope that helps!

I hit 160 balls at the range yesterday and am looking forward to a game at my local golf course Dyker Beach GC. No water to throw the clubs in. Excellent for guy’s getting back to the game. Taking my father’s Taylor Made twenty year old driver out tomorrow. Supination of my left wrist during the backswing with a slow backswing like the South Korean in the Masters I hope will provide exciting results. Maybe you can help me get much more consistent with my driver. I’m over my boyhood fear of cutting open the golf ball. I want to directly hit the ball. Thanks, be great, good and lucky

It's my pleasure, Matthew - I'm very glad to learn that my channel's instruction content is resonating well with you!!
Sadly, many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings of "conventional" instruction - such as turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the club, shifting into- and torquing against - a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). We're doing our best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, although unfortunately such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream, because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎
Thanks for your comment, keep up the great work, and have fun out there!!

very interesting concept.as u said this is tough for many to agree with.i was taught that this is a reverse weight shift.gives me something to think about.thanks

      @SagutoGolf  3 роки тому

      Hi Robert,
I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! Yours is a good question, though, because it represents an often misconstrued notion and occasional invalid criticism of the Stack & Tilt swing, and as such I always appreciate the opportunity to respond and clarify. You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. There's no "weight shift", therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse or pivot!! And the result is a low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing!
      Cheers!
      Tom

Thanks, Tom! I have had a number of "traditional golf swing lessons" since I took up golf for real in 1997. I am 77 years old now, retired and working on a way to graduate back to the white tees (club tees) from the green tees (forward tees). Some of what you are teaching via analysis of Ben Hogan's swing is similar to the "stack and tilt" fundamentals, i.e., weight forward, left shoulder goes down (which happens if you turn your hips), arms straight, hands in and hips tucked. All of that seems to happen in the great video of Hogan's swing in your selected videos. Having returned to using many elements of stack & tilt have helped me. BUT THIS VIDEO OF HOGAN AND YOUR ANALYSIS give me real hope. I really don't care whether I get back to the white tees; I just want to play better golf, and it seems to be happening now. Thanks, again, Tom!

By the way, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. So many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. Here's a link if you would like to know more about the school - saguto.golf
You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing and experience great ball striking. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

i always knew that the hips had to shift left before you could rotate your hips to the left, but this is the only video i've seen that addresses the TIMING of the hip shift. would love to see a video that also addresses the TIMING of the hip rotation to the left.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  7 місяців тому

      I appreciate that, Douglas!
The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here are a couple of lesson videos specific to this topic:

Thanks for your extended thoughtfulness about the golf swing. Your illustrations about when the downswing begins has helped me clear a point of confusion I created, by thinking that the downswing began during the beginning of the lateral movement towards the target. There’s a clear and definite moment when the downswing begins. The backswing and downswing don’t overlap! Just because there’s movement towards the target doesn’t mean that the downswing has begun! Since I have already given you a like 👍🏼 please consider a virtual hug 🤗

    • @SagutoGolf

Sorry that I do not have any left hand specific videos, but as a right handed player myself it would likely be a bit of a train wreck...😂
There are a couple of options for your wife: 1) The Phil Mickelson "mirror image" method of learning. I believe that Phil is actually right handed but supposedly learned to play lefty from mimicking his dad's swing while facing him. 2) There are ways to create mirror images of UA-cam videos. Just search that and you'll see some options in this regard.
      I hope that helps!!

Mr. Hogan's "hip turn put weight on the front side." WOW! VERY insightful. And what's amazing to me is the way you draw out the fact that what golf's greatest ball-striker did flies in the face of what is now being taught by most PGA pros. Very insightful, Tom. Thank you for helping me to solidify, in my mind, what I need to do during the backswing.

Been taking lessons for the past few months where they taught me to move my shoulders away from the target behind the ball with all the weight on the trail foot heal. Then start the hip rotation. This is for the drive, to create a wider swing arc. Problem is, I am going out of sync during the downswing hitting embarrassing fat shots and thin shots with my drive. So frustrating. The place where I take lessons have video practice. Found Tom's videos of Ben Hogan swings recently and tried it during practice and on the course. Almost immediately, I was getting much more distance, speed and consistency. It is very easy to do the upward acceleration from that Ben Hogan position on top of the down swing, and also keeping more weight on the lead foot during the entire swing. Great work, Tom, with going against all the conventions and explaining an easier path. Thank you so much!

I'm very glad to learn of your success through my channel's instruction content, John!! And yes, unfortunately such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant. 😎 Sadly, many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings of "conventional" instruction - such as turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the club, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). We're doing our best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness!
