  • This is the "MOST IMPORTANT PART" of the golf swing according to Ben Hogan. This golf tip ELIMINATES SLICES and gets your golf swing on a powerful path to the golf ball at impact. It's no wonder why Ben calls this the MOST IMPORTANT PART of the golf swing. This Ben Hogan golf swing tip focuses on the lower body's role in the downswing and the way the shoulders should behave in the process. You will learn exactly how to do this move in your golf swing by watching this video.
The path of the club on the downswing is the MOST CRITICAL element of the golf swing. It determines the club's approach into the golf ball and also how much power you apply to the ball at impact. Not only that, it is the ONLY part of the swing that hits the ball - it affects EVERYTHING (ball flight, ball curve, accuracy, power, quality of contact). Ben Hogan knew this fact in his many years of studying the golf swing and performing at a high level. He shares his secret with us - and I pass along an excellent drill for you to do this fantastic golf tip from Ben Hogan.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

      I sincerely appreciate that, Derek!
Mr. Hogan delivered - and continues to deliver posthumously - phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about Hogan’s swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied teachings - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I’m doing my best to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.

This video has truly helped my swing. I watched it twice, and went to the range. It was hard to get used to shallowing the club, but your image of a string attached to your hip prevailed. I over-rotated at first and pulled everything left. After chilling out the motion, the ball flight straightened out. I was stunned how effortless my swing was becoming. Thank you so much. Hopefully, I'll now be able to break 90, because I'll be hitting more from the fairway. Awesome !!

Thanks again, Tom. I took this thought to the course today and played the best golf of my life! My distances were off, until I realized my rangefinder was set to meters instead of yards. I hit a short tee shot on the first tee, a par3, so I chipped in for birdie. What a way to start a round. I sent a couple of subsequent shots right, but realized I was letting my trail elbow leave my side. I fixed that, and the rest of the round was awesome. More GIRs that ever before. Your lessons are making golf fun again!

Brilliant video Tom! Your explanation of Ben Hogan's lateral move of the hips to target to start the downswing struck me like a revelation - I've been rotating the hips right from the start for so many years! Can't wait to try this out. No more death zone for me. Thank you so much!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 роки тому +1

That is THE critical element to get the club in the "slot", Paul. If you hold your mouse pointer outside of Hogan's front hip in that video you'll see just how much he moves them laterally even though it looks like rotation. Completely takes the death zone out of play!
      Glad you enjoyed the lesson!

I'm glad to know that this Hogan lesson from the archives helped you find your groove!
This is a very body-friendly motion, so any pain - aside from some occasional and normal minor muscle soreness - typically means that something is amiss either in the setup or the swing. For example, having both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees with the knees similarly angled outward are prescribed setup features of the swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very consistent, powerful swing.
Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Additionally, you'll have access to all my short game content (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play), advanced level content, diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. More good instruction using Ben Hogan as an example of how to do it. As we discussed in one of your previous Hogan instruction videos, he showed some Stack & Tilt in his swing. He swung around, not up and down, and kept himself centered, not overly swaying and shifting weight to the back leg in the back swing. Great stuff!

    GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!
I was taught this 20 years ago …..
YOU WANT TO SCORE LOW, GOT GET SHALLOW
I Use my (R) elbow staying tucked into my body , riding my body , staying close to my body always beating my hands to the top of my backswing as swing thought ,
helps me to get swinging shallow again …
I like the lateral move towards target with the string attached to hip and but end of club . as another swing thought ,
I’m going add that with my(R) elbow into my body on the down also , elbow alwys has to beat my hands to the ball same as the back swing ,
    GREAT VIDEO PARTNER ,

Tom, bz here. I'm the guy that always calls you SaGOATo. I just wanted to let you know I shot an 88 yesterday. Hands down the best round of my life. Shot a 40 on the front 9!!! A FU%#*NG FORTY!! Then I celebrated with a few too many Coors Lite's on the back 9 and let some strokes get away from me. Probably should've been an 84. Anyways, thank you so much for your youtube videos. Finding your channel has changed the game for me in a dramatic way. I'm playing with confidence because I'm no longer guessing with my swing. If you'd have told me that I'd break 90 this season after consistently shooting in the 110's my whole life I'd have called you crazy. My golf goals are shifting! Thank you, Tom!

Thanks so much for your kind words regarding my instruction content and teaching style - I sincerely appreciate your support!!

Stack and Tilt truly is fabulous system that is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers.
Now, if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, structured, sequential platform, please consider my online school. It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The school is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more.
And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner.
Embrace the system, embrace the process, and you will soon embrace ownership of a well-functioning swing and the resulting ball striking bliss it provides!

It's ironic. Here I am in a funk and one of the things I got away from is firing that left hip forward first to start the downswing. This is exactly what the video is about. You didn't mention it in this video but as you have taught, the other problem it solves is reducing chunky shots and gaining needed extension in the swing.
I definitely feel like I am descending the Mt. Everest summit, but it's too late in the day for a late 3 pm departure from the top and I am now stuck in the dreaded 'death zone'. Harvey Penick in his book Little Red Book calls this move the Magic Move. He says that in the downswing you bring the right elbow into your side while at the same time make your lateral move to the left. He says this is one move, not two. Practice this move every day, and you don't even need a club. Harvey says that once you master this move "you will hit the ball as if by magic!".

    • @SagutoGolf

Yes - it ultimately melds into one move, but I find it most helpful for my audience to digest in bite-size portions. That's why I did this lesson and another called "Ben Hogan's Magic Elbow": ua-cam.com/video/iL9WmQ7KsmE/v-deo.html

Good video. Learning the golf swing from Hogan is like learning physics from Einstein. Next I would do a video instruction on the point of impact. For example, some of my best short and long iron shots have occurred when my focus is on that part of grass 2 or 3 inches in front of the ball. I don't even look at the ball; It just gets in the way of the arc of my swing as I take out a nice dollar-sized piece of turf in front of it. Anyways, I enjoy your videos.

You said that you placed the ball "about on the same line as the stick." To me it looks like the ball is sitting 6"-8" IN FRONT OF THE STICK, to insure an "in to out" swing path...............correct; or am I hallucinating! 😎🏌️‍♂️ well Tom, I just got back from the driving range trying this out and was hitting every shot with my 8 iron 160 - 165 yards with a PUSH DRAW! AMAZING! So easy to square my club face, not roll my hands with my release and make perfect contact! My swing felt effortless. On plane, easy and fluid. This video just became a PERMANENT PART AND FOUNDATIONAL PART OF MY SWING. THIS IS MY NEW AND ONLY THOUGHT FOR MY SWING. EVERYTHING ELSE JUST FALLS INTO PLACE...............NATURALLY AND ATHLETICALLY! Never entered the "death zone" once! You da MAN! Mucho Gracias as they say here in ARIZONA!😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Well then, I guess we don't need to concern ourselves with your original ball position question as quite clearly you have figured it out...😎
Great job incorporating this into your swing! Have mucho fun out there!!! 😂

No question, Tom, Ben Hogan developed the swing to emulate,
    . You explained it perfectly.

Thanks Rene - I truly appreciate your kind words and am glad to know that you enjoyed this video! I am receiving OVERWHELMINGLY favorable comments regarding this lesson as Mr. Hogan's lateral hip move - which is substantial and CLEARLY noticeable - is dramatically helping my students, subscribers, and guests to get out of the "death zone" and into the proper position from which to deliver the club into the ball.
By the way, due to their popularity I've combined all my recent Hogan lesson videos into a series on this channel. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/play/PLV62KxT7Mp7IyNDRp0hZK1F1OScdXx-u1.html

Thomas Fraser - Please refer to my reply to Rene in this thread. Not once did I reference Mr. Hogan's book with regard to the "string" comment. This was specifically a "feel" I was conveying to MY students, subs, and channel guests to get them out of the downswing "death zone" and into the "happy zone" - the primary point of this lesson. Aside from that, if it makes so much of a difference to you as to whether a string or rope is attached to the abdomen vs. the lead hip that you are compelled to nitpick it, then by all means feel free to put in the time to build your own online instruction channel, create free detailed video content, and teach your swing methodology. In the meantime, out of respect I would appreciate it if you could refrain from sabotaging the comments of well-intentioned individuals on my channel and simply post your thoughts and dissents separately.
Rene Wojcik - I apologize for any undeserved troubles related to your very kind and genuine comment.

SagutoGolf thank you. Could you tell me why Stack and Tilt is better then a conventional swing? No argument here. I really would love to hear your opinion or have you even presented a video on the subject? Perhaps you did and I will look for it. Cheers

Thanks Tom, my swing has always been inspired by ben hogan's five lessons, but your fresh teaching has clarified many aspects to me, like no longer coming from the outside. Furthermore, the concept of tilt and all that goes with it is much clearer to me. I've been practicing all day and no more hooks !!! I continue to follow you, with the secret hope of getting to know you! Thanks again, Marco
