Ben Hogan's Magic Elbow - The Best Golf Ball Striking Tip You Need to Know

- Ben Hogan and the magic of the trail elbow - one of the best Ben Hogan golf ball striking tips you need to know. This is one of the best golf ball striking tips because it makes the golf swing so easy to repeat and also fixes 11+ golf swing problems. This Ben Hogan golf tip comes from his book Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. More specifically, in the Stance section, Ben Hogan discusses the importance of tucking in the trail elbow to allow it to stay "glued to his side" in the golf swing. Ben Hogan's "elbow tucking" setup serves many important purposes:
1. It allows the golf club to travel on the same path every single time for a consistent, automatically repeating golf swing with amazing golf ball striking.
2. It creates an automatic wrist hinge and stores up power in the trail arm in the backswing - for powerful golf ball striking.
3. It stores power and lag on the downswing - preventing casting and early extension in the process and opening up room to hit really clean golf shots.
4. It allows the trail arm to powerfully FIRE through the golf ball after impact - sending all of your energy through the ball without wasting any power and creating amazing golf ball striking feelings.
5. It prevents slices and ultimately fixes the slice because the elbow staying tucked prevents the club from swinging over the top in the downswing.
6. It helps keep the lead, left arm straight in the golf swing for crispy, clean contact and improve your golf ball striking.
7. It allows for EFFORTLESS POWER because of the trail arm loading I mentioned earlier.
8. It promotes a proper inward hand path and prevents golfers from lifting their arms - increasing consistency and power and improving golf ball striking.
There are SO MANY MORE BENEFITS in this Ben Hogan golf ball striking tip that I don't have enough time to list all of them!

Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

You produce nice video on the value of the Right elbow but way you see the value of mechanics I take little issue with you. If you look at how Ben Right elbow is created on the back swing to your form. Your elbow goes back to far which limits right elbow placement on the down swing. Watch Ben Rich elbow going back and see it movement on the down swing is not as go as his. If you watch his down swing the right elbow go forward where right arm is up and shoulder title is great all because of right elbow timing and placement.
Your timing is later than Ben that affect shape of the body during the down swing and delays right elbow placement during the down swing which affect rotational force he talks about in his Two drawing going into the hands.
The two drawing in his book the Five Lesson gives greatest understanding if you understand all that is parts to the golf swing he shows.
Little differences with the Right elbow affects rotational force ability going into the hands. The timing and placement of the Right elbow during the down swing affect spine title and force into the hands. The right elbow action determines lag time of the hands to strike the ball. As the right arm extends out the club face turns and comes open to the ball and lower snap affect of the hands/.
Timing the snap of hand is in direct relations to right elbow placement. If the righ elbow is in side as your club head goes into ball your shoulder are titles tha allows greater rotation force going into the hands so they create the snap of the club head through the ball.
Keep working but in MY view your still little off in what he created as the most affect swing mechanics for each clubs. The one big weakness to me in this video is your foot work placement for the. club you used. The placement of feet in your swing did not allow your right elbow to be used affectedly.
Ben Hogan has foot work placement for each club so the right elbow can be place in the most affect way. Watch your hip go up as the right elbow comes through show your foot work setup did not allow the right elbow to come through without you moving up and down. . Your work is good. My area is base on physical training for swing mechanics for each club base in core breathing and hip setup so spine and shoulder are affective.
Have good day. You can look me up on You Tube and my explaining the two drawing from energy point of view and shape of the body for swing mechanics. Your young and I am OLD. Have a good day.
@@Qitrainer You did not finish 3rd grade grammar, or you do not naturally speak English. Tom is trying to focus on "one" of thousands, if not many more, aspects of the physics of the golf swing. Try to focus. Perfecting one thing can automatically correct many others.
This last summer I was in the zone for about a month. My take away felt compact and connected and my ball striking was very solid and consistent. Sadly the feel of that take away went away. I still hit plenty of good shots, but the consistency was lost. After watching "Hogan's magic elbow" I made a few swings and the feeling of this summer's take away was back. I went to the range and the it was like summer all over again. I can't wait to take the "magic elbow" to the course.
Great lesson, Ben Hogan, the best golfer ever..
Dude... seriously, you just suck at understanding high to mid handicap golfers.
@04:00, you are showing exactly what I mean. You keep talking about the 'trail arm' and you show casting, but what you COMPLETELY FAIL to talk about is the fact that the downswing is being initiated by the shoulders/arms. THAT'S WHAT CAUSES CASTING.
The way you demo it backs it up. Your hips follow your shoulder turn when you start the casting motion. That's what most golfers do. That's why they can't hit the ball with any consistency and work up a sweat when they're at the driving range.
High handicappers (most of the golfing public) start the swing like your bad example @04:00. I've rarely encountered a high handicapper who started the swing with their hips. Obviously, you overexaggerate the casting motion, but even when you do, you're starting it with your shoulders/arms and your hips try to follow, even with you don't try to let them.
Also, the TRAIL ARM is NOT a source of thunderous godly power, or whatever that horseshit you said... it's simply there to keep the club on plane and assist in channeling the power from THE HIPS. The hips are the power generators of the swing. The backswing lets you coil up, turns the torso/chest... the slightest pause to let the hips start the swing, and then the shoulders, arms, and hands follow.
Everyone from Ben Hogan onward has said this. It's not hard to understand. I don't know what else to tell you.
My 91 yr old Dad still says "tuck the right elbow" every time I visit and go off to play golf. He also loves to say- "clubs for sale, sweet spot never hit"
Your Dad sounds like a fun dude to play golf with.
@@aokworldwide_com6298 Thanks. I count my blessings that he and Mom have lived such a long life, especially considering his military career and time spent in harm's way. I didn't take up golf until 40, and he had to quit due to arthritis at only 48. He took me to the MCAS Miramar in San Diego 10 years ago and said "what the hell" , picked up my wedge and chipped in from off the green....the only time I saw him hit a ball since I caddied for him in 1969 in Atsugi Japan. Good times. Have a great day.
“sweet spot never hit”🤣🤣🤣
What about the "Hogan Swing Plane" who ever talks about that??
@@shofey before Hogan died he said he was all wrong about his swing plane and wished he would have changed it. Said could have won a lot more tournaments.

This video literally changed my golf game. I golfed with my dad first time in like 3-4 months after practicing this for only a couple weeks. He was literally blown away at the power and distance I was getting. He was telling me to explain It to him because he was even noticing how much more shallow my plane was.... I had some wind at back (a lot) but I had a drive to 370+!! I had 3-4 others that were extremely impressive as well. Longest I’ve driven the ball in my life, by far, and my irons were extremely crispy. My dad literally goes “dude you are creating some serious club head speed and lag(he’s a good golfer)...Need to redo my distances because I’m constantly going long lol. Can’t say I’m mad. Saguto is the goat. Stay crispy everyone
@Brmax24,
Dude......... 370+???!!! 💪💪💪
This lesson video has helped so many folks, in many case producing dramatic results such as those you are experiencing. It truly is a "MAGIC" elbow, because it conquers such a vast array of swing issues to deliver exactly what you said - a shallowed in to out path, lag, serious speed, and extra crispy impact!!
Well done and thanks so much for sharing!!
Your in Crispiness,
Tom
@@SagutoGolf thanks again Tom! I can’t wait to play again most fun in years golfing. Other thing I noticed the next day. Was how sore my core, glutes, hamstrings were... Never had that happen in the past golfing .. All hands I guess and no big muscles with the previous swing

I revisited this video and must say that, after 35 years of golf, and receiving countless tips, THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE I HAVE EVER LEARNED.
It will UTTERLY TRANSFORM your swing.
It should be the first thing golfers are taught.
My God, when I think of the frustration I would've been spared had I learned this at age 15 ...
This video is a Saguto classic.
When friends ask how I've improved so much, I send them this video.
Is it similar for driver?
I have watched literally hundreds of UA-cam videos on golf swings and how to hit the golf ball. This video is probably the Best golf swing video I have ever seen! It has clarified and simplified something I had in the past found to be so complex and difficult. I don’t have to think about the back swing or the downswing anymore! It is almost like my swing is on autopilot. Thank you Tom!!!
Yep, Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons is a must-read for every golfer. Thanks for providing a great reminder and visualization!
Yep, makes perfect sense, been using this for chipping too
I just saw this great video and was able to reach over from my chair and pick up Ben's 5 Lessons book that I had on my desk. That book is my bible. Ben shows the great drill on pages 82 and 83 which demonstrates what Tom is advocating. You can do it in your garage and is a great warm-up before playing. Actually, this video is a great reminder for me.
Tom I just want to genuinely thank you. I found your channel near the beginning of the year and I started trying your techniques, but I also tried the techniques from some of the major channels. After poor performance and some neck, shoulder, and back pain/aches I decided to really focus on your channel and fundamentals. Im thrilled to say that after 3 months of watching and re-watching your videos and going to the range twice a week, my golf game has changed dramatically. I would always hit around 105 to 110, and now I'm hitting in the high 80s. As a result of your videos I consistently make clean contact and hit the ball straight. Ive never been more excited about the game. Ive abandoned all the other channels and look forward to every one of your videos.
Welcome to "the dark side", John, where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of effortless and body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime. 😆
Seriously, I'm very glad to learn of your success through this instruction, and I am THRILLED to know how much fun you are now having playing this great game!! THAT is what this channel and my online school are really all about!!

@@SagutoGolf I practiced this tuck for a good hour in 86 degree weather before my round, and not only did I pure multiple howitzers, it helped me pack in some pit juice with a stench that blew my opponent away. I skunked him out of winning the big prize , a bag of Cheetos.

Your golf tip in this video is awesome! You've cured the slice on my iron shots! Now I can focus on increasing my club distances. Thank you so much !!!
Thanks Tom, another fabulous lesson. You're awesome.
This is absolutely true, top tip.
Thanks for this video. Wow, that little change makes a huge difference. It is so subtle. One thing I have struggled with is too much tension in my right shoulder, elbow, and wrist. I have to work hard at keeping that side soft and loose. I definitely want to tighten up and it kills my speed and release. I know for certain that the elbow position is really important and I know when I am "wrong" at the top of the backswing. Thanks, you really helped.
Excellent tip I found this video today yesterday at range I kept my elbow tucked close against my side and hit amazing straight irons. definitely something to this
I've been playing a little over a year. Had lessons, watched all the youtubes but couldn't hit consistently to save my life. Until this video. Tom, I watched this video last weekend and then watched your free ball striking Mini-Course. I practiced these movements all weekend while watching The Masters. Headed to the practice range on Monday to try them out. Wow. What a difference I had in ball contact with my irons. Hit my Driver a little better. I played 18 holes on Tuesday on a tight course using these keys. I shot an 83 and I'm usually around 90. I hit the green on 3 of the 4 Par 3's, which I seldom do. And I made an Eagle on a 60 yard pitch shot on a par 4. My first Eagle in the last 9 years! These keys to better ball striking are gold. I still need to work on my Driver swing as I missed a good many fairways. But I was impressed with the way I hit the ball with my irons. I may have to sign up for your online golf scholl.
That is OUTSTANDING, Steve - congrats on a fabulous round!! 💪💪

I watch these videos with my 8yr old son in Ireland and we love them - good work SagutoGolf!!!
All I can say is WOW! I'm a high handicap golfer. I've had lessons, tried various ideas from UA-cam, but took this tip on the driving range today, and what a difference! The drives were heading straight! I really had to tuck that arm close, but that's it. Just taking a smooth. Controlled, swing. Thank you so much for this information.

I'm getting on this straight away.. Great video.
I really like this video. Very simple explanation that eliminates the need for a lot of different swing thoughts. However you forgot to mention a very important thing I noticed in your video. Those pants are great because if you have a hole in your pocket your golf balls or loose change won't fall out on the ground!
That sounds very interesting, I need to try as it , thanks

Thanks for that tip, i have been trying to hinge, lag & so many other things to confuse me. I did this drill with allignment sticks keeping my elbow tucked to my body & i got more distance & hit the ball closer to my target. I need to to practice & get more consistant but it really simplified workingbon my swing, thank you, amazing tip.
Just wanted you and anyone who watches this my own experience on this video. It has single handedly changed my golf game for the better. I've been seriously playing for about 3 years now and had thought about giving up a few times because no matter how many videos I watched or how many balls I hit on the range I couldn't get a consistent swing and was not improving at all. Within, no kidding, 2 days of practicing this swing technique, I've not only added about 15 yards per club but my ball striking is crisp and flush. I just shot 6 strokes better than I normally do on the first 9 I played after using it and if I knew how to chip it would have been closer to 10 strokes. And my ball flight, wow, high towering shots that feels so good when I hit it. Enough rambling, THANK YOU. thank you for posting this video. It's given me a new sense of enjoyment of golf.
Do you keep the right elbow in on driver too or just irons
@@robertwhite3067 Same. You might want to check your face of the club at impact. You can go to a neutral to strong golf grip ( look it up) to prevent slicing- or as Ben Hogan did also, pull your rear leg back from even just a bit.
Was listening to 5 lessons while working on grip last night. It really came together when he got to "tucking the arms and elbows in as close as possible". That tuck actually happens naturally for me and didn't even know it! I also use a short thumb without even knowing it haha!
There really is so much gold here! I need to watch the first few minutes of this just before leaving to go to the range every time! Thanks Tom and thanks Ben Hogan

More than any other swing keys, the right elbow on the right hip on the downswing is the single Hogan move that will cure all swing ills because it sets the swing plane AND it enables a full arm extension throwing motion release from the inside to avoid the #1 swing flaw- coming over the top!
You got it, Jim - that is indeed the elixir for most all diseases of the swing!!

Thanks for sharing your success with this lesson, and keep up the great work!!
Tom
Great video. Peter Thomson had this position with his right elbow too. Finished second to Hogan in 1953 and won The Open five times.
That "magic elbow" - a trademark move of many great players as you mention - by itself can overcome a variety of amateur swing flaws by still bringing them into a proper position from which to hit!
Cheers!
Tom
I cannot believe how well this worked. Had to comment and thank you for such a simple and effective technique.

Hi Rodrigo,
I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited you!!

Tom
So just put the “magic elbow” to the test and it works! What I love about this is it really does put the whole swing together! Amazing! I want to feel the swing not think of 20 things as I’m swinging. This simplifies everything!

Tom
Really excellent - I have been working on this in my swing, keeping the trail arm more connected, and it greatly improves consistency (and I am a Plus 1.9 index). Nice video.
Thanks Mark - I'm glad it help you!!
Nice playing by the way!!
Tom
Plus 1.3 index here, totally agree with what you said about connecting the trail arm, definitely improves ball striking and consistency, very often overlooked.
This is the best video I’ve ever seen on the full swing.
Thanks Steve!

Thanks so much - this is outstanding guidance ... very clear!!!
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed the "magic elbow" video, and I hope it benefits your game as it has mine!!

Tom
I tried this out on the driving range today, and was really impressed with how solidly and consistently I was striking the ball. Great tip!
Glad it helped, Larry!! It truly is a "magic" move!!
Tom
Great advice, followed it today and shot 83 after a 95 yesterday. Couldn’t miss the fairway. Thank you!
AWESOME!! Well done, Joseph!!
Thanks for sharing and keep up the great playing!!
Tom
This no doubt is a powerful move. Ben Hogans book is a present I got from a friend who introduced me to this game in the early 90’s. But I found his descriptions too detailed. Although I did go through the book. I think for a driver keeping your right elbow glued to your side is a bit restricting. For irons especially mid to short it works well. Nice tip and reminder for those of us who have studied his book.
I never knew such a tiny mini school adjustment can make something so much easier you are amazing bro automatic sub
I keep coming back to this video! This simple lesson changed my swing, giving me more power on drives, and better accuracy with my irons. Whenever I start "straying" I come back and watch it again! Thanks,Tom!
You and countless others around the globe, Brian. The "magic elbow" truly is the cure-all for so many swing afflictions!!
Keep up the great work and have fun out there!!
Tom
@@SagutoGolf Tom, when you swing longer, like with the driver, what happens then? It would seem a longer, driver swing would pull the elbow further way or higher unless you want a swing that look like Rahm's (which wouldn't be bad, obviously).
Best golf tip I’ve ever had. I’m normally preoccupied with my swing plane but this move makes it a natural movement. Had a super game after adopting it. 👍
That's Fabulous, Bob! It truly is a "MAGIC" elbow!!
Thanks for sharing your success with this lesson video!
Tom
That’s two of us. I incorporated this into my trigger and it’s chanced my golf life.
One of the best and simplest of tips every amateur should follow 👍
Indeed it is!! The "Magic Elbow" conquers many a swing flaw!!
Cheers!
Tom
So helpful! Thanks!
Stack and tilt keep right elbow tucked to your side and holy crap for the last two days I’ve been doing this, just watching this video now and yeah brother. I’ve never hit them so far and straight !!!!! Thanks
Welcome to "the dark side", Bill, where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of effortless and body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime. 😆

Hi Tom. A crispy update on trail arm progress - she’s coming along rather nicely - and I feel the whole “crispier shot” thing is gradually increasing in frequency at the moment - which is just fine for me. I know I’m making real progress with your online course. 😜. This evening, I hit an intended lay-up 5 wood , my 3rd shot on a 530 yds par 5 (after a decent drive, but a poor second shot with my 3 wood) from 212 yards, thinking I’d hit it about 175 yds as usual, and then chip on. However... I connected perfectly, nice little draw. Fluid. Effortless. Felt really comfortable and natural. Couldn’t see it land as the hole is lower than the ridge which was in front of me, maybe 40 yds ahead from where I hit it. It ended 4 ft from pin. Sunk for birdie. Walking tall. Love this game. 😎
I love it, Nick!! *_"Fluid, effortless, comfortable, and natural"_* - that's what we're shooting for here, because that's what ultimately leads us to enjoying this great game for a lifetime! (i.e.: "Love this game" as you say! 😆)
Thanks so much for sharing that great shot!!
Keep it crispy!!
Tom
I love this. Thanks Tom. Part of my preshot routine every shot, even my putting I tuck some of my sleeve under my trail arm to keep it set in there. . Great tips dude !!

After studying your golf tips for a week, I've narrowed it down to 3 swing thought/tips. 1- weight on lead leg throughout swing. 2- turn shoulder down at the ball. 3- stay connected and fire the right arm into the ball. These 3 skills alone are key. I cant recommend enough for everyone to join your membership golf school. Once I did, I instantly found all the missing pieces in my golf swing that I wasnt understanding from only watching your youtube videos. I think it should be mentioned, Toms online golf school is very professional and if in case your turned off by his "silliness" with his youtube videos, rest a sure, he is professional.
BTW, I enjoy the 'silliness'.
Thanks for clarifying the "silliness" thing, Desmond!!!...😂
Seriously, I truly appreciate your kind words and validation of my online school. Yes - Believe it or not, there are a few who can't quite cut through the camera persona on this free channel, so it's great to have your testimonial on the "all-business" nature of the online school, and as long as you don't mind I may reference it from time to time.
As for your three swing keys, they are absolutely spot on, and it is no wonder that you are enjoying such improvement and success!
Thanks again for your support, and keep up the great work!!
Tom
100% true. I finally broke 90 after implementing this. When my swing starts to get a little sketchy I remind myself to be mindful of that right elbow and my swing gets corrected. If I could only put now.
It absolutely is the "magic" elbow, Aldo!! Nice job!!

This one tip has been hugely helpful. Keep keeping it simple. I don't need more confusion in my life.

Yesterday I saw this video and went to play a round and ended up shooting my best score (79) from my previous personal best 85. It helped keep the ball in play the whole round. Love it.
That's fabulous, David - congrats on absolutely nuking your previous personal best score!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson benefited your game to such an extent. It truly is a "magic" elbow!!
Thanks for your support of my channel and for sharing your success, and keep up the great work!!

I'm a former Tennis player. And since I started playing Golf I always wondered why everyone disagreed with me when I told them that the right side hits the ball. After watching this video I now know i was right. and thank you for the best tip I have ever had.
I'm glad you found this video, Robert!! The transition from tennis to golf would be a very easy one if not for that erroneous bit of advice that sadly permeated deeply into the world of "conventional" instruction. Hopefully you are now well on your way to experiencing ball striking bliss!!
Tom
Really one of the best tips I ever got. A lot of videos are talking about WHY this elbow is useful but only this one really simple shows how I need to do it.
Thanks a lot for sharing this!
Best regards from Germany!
I'm very glad to know that this "magic elbow" lesson resonated well with you, Eric. If we can get to that position crispy contact is nearly guaranteed!
I hope all is well in Germany!!
Tom
Great explanation and demonstration! Thank you Saguto!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the Hogan Magic Elbow episode. It sure has helped a lot of folks overcome a variety of downswing issues, and I hope it helps you as well!!

Love this! An add on, if you have trouble doing this, put a rag in between your back arm and your body and keep it pinned there while you swing. Helps you exagggerate that movement and force you into different muscle memory. 👍👍
I'm glad you enjoyed the "magic elbow", Zachary!! Yes - a rag or a golf glove works well. Actually in the Stack and Tilt book they suggest a drill where you hit shots with a tee stuck under each armpit and try to keep both tees in place throughout the entire swing.
Thanks!
Tom
This is THE best swing thought. It sets the club in the right position, naturally hinges the wrists for lag, and delivers crispy and consistent contact. Every time. It’s easy too. When I start hitting it bad (usually fat) it’s because I’m disconnecting my arms from the body. Hogan’s elbow fixes this. Feeling the lag is awesome too.
It is indeed a "magic" elbow and the solution to many a swing issue!!
Thank you so much Sags! Golf is fun again, pleased as punch. Pass out the Dixie Cups:) Cheers, from Cottonwood Creek CC in Waco, TX.
