  • Ben Hogan and the magic of the trail elbow - one of the best Ben Hogan golf ball striking tips you need to know. This is one of the best golf ball striking tips because it makes the golf swing so easy to repeat and also fixes 11+ golf swing problems. This Ben Hogan golf tip comes from his book Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. More specifically, in the Stance section, Ben Hogan discusses the importance of tucking in the trail elbow to allow it to stay "glued to his side" in the golf swing. Ben Hogan's "elbow tucking" setup serves many important purposes:
    1. It allows the golf club to travel on the same path every single time for a consistent, automatically repeating golf swing with amazing golf ball striking.
    2. It creates an automatic wrist hinge and stores up power in the trail arm in the backswing - for powerful golf ball striking.
    3. It stores power and lag on the downswing - preventing casting and early extension in the process and opening up room to hit really clean golf shots.
    4. It allows the trail arm to powerfully FIRE through the golf ball after impact - sending all of your energy through the ball without wasting any power and creating amazing golf ball striking feelings.
    5. It prevents slices and ultimately fixes the slice because the elbow staying tucked prevents the club from swinging over the top in the downswing.
    6. It helps keep the lead, left arm straight in the golf swing for crispy, clean contact and improve your golf ball striking.
    7. It allows for EFFORTLESS POWER because of the trail arm loading I mentioned earlier.
    8. It promotes a proper inward hand path and prevents golfers from lifting their arms - increasing consistency and power and improving golf ball striking.
There are SO MANY MORE BENEFITS in this Ben Hogan golf ball striking tip that I don't have enough time to list all of them!

You produce nice video on the value of the Right elbow but way you see the value of mechanics I take little issue with you. If you look at how Ben Right elbow is created on the back swing to your form. Your elbow goes back to far which limits right elbow placement on the down swing. Watch Ben Rich elbow going back and see it movement on the down swing is not as go as his. If you watch his down swing the right elbow go forward where right arm is up and shoulder title is great all because of right elbow timing and placement.
Your timing is later than Ben that affect shape of the body during the down swing and delays right elbow placement during the down swing which affect rotational force he talks about in his Two drawing going into the hands.
The two drawing in his book the Five Lesson gives greatest understanding if you understand all that is parts to the golf swing he shows.
Little differences with the Right elbow affects rotational force ability going into the hands. The timing and placement of the Right elbow during the down swing affect spine title and force into the hands. The right elbow action determines lag time of the hands to strike the ball. As the right arm extends out the club face turns and comes open to the ball and lower snap affect of the hands/.
Timing the snap of hand is in direct relations to right elbow placement. If the righ elbow is in side as your club head goes into ball your shoulder are titles tha allows greater rotation force going into the hands so they create the snap of the club head through the ball.
Keep working but in MY view your still little off in what he created as the most affect swing mechanics for each clubs. The one big weakness to me in this video is your foot work placement for the. club you used. The placement of feet in your swing did not allow your right elbow to be used affectedly.
Ben Hogan has foot work placement for each club so the right elbow can be place in the most affect way. Watch your hip go up as the right elbow comes through show your foot work setup did not allow the right elbow to come through without you moving up and down. . Your work is good. My area is base on physical training for swing mechanics for each club base in core breathing and hip setup so spine and shoulder are affective.
Have good day. You can look me up on You Tube and my explaining the two drawing from energy point of view and shape of the body for swing mechanics. Your young and I am OLD. Have a good day.

This last summer I was in the zone for about a month. My take away felt compact and connected and my ball striking was very solid and consistent. Sadly the feel of that take away went away. I still hit plenty of good shots, but the consistency was lost. After watching "Hogan's magic elbow" I made a few swings and the feeling of this summer's take away was back. I went to the range and the it was like summer all over again. I can't wait to take the "magic elbow" to the course.

Dude... seriously, you just suck at understanding high to mid handicap golfers.
@04:00, you are showing exactly what I mean. You keep talking about the 'trail arm' and you show casting, but what you COMPLETELY FAIL to talk about is the fact that the downswing is being initiated by the shoulders/arms. THAT'S WHAT CAUSES CASTING.
The way you demo it backs it up. Your hips follow your shoulder turn when you start the casting motion. That's what most golfers do. That's why they can't hit the ball with any consistency and work up a sweat when they're at the driving range.
High handicappers (most of the golfing public) start the swing like your bad example @04:00. I've rarely encountered a high handicapper who started the swing with their hips. Obviously, you overexaggerate the casting motion, but even when you do, you're starting it with your shoulders/arms and your hips try to follow, even with you don't try to let them.
Also, the TRAIL ARM is NOT a source of thunderous godly power, or whatever that horseshit you said... it's simply there to keep the club on plane and assist in channeling the power from THE HIPS. The hips are the power generators of the swing. The backswing lets you coil up, turns the torso/chest... the slightest pause to let the hips start the swing, and then the shoulders, arms, and hands follow.
Everyone from Ben Hogan onward has said this. It's not hard to understand. I don't know what else to tell you.

He was literally blown away at the power and distance I was getting. He was telling me to explain It to him because he was even noticing how much more shallow my plane was.... I had some wind at back (a lot) but I had a drive to 370+!! I had 3-4 others that were extremely impressive as well. Tom, I watched this video last weekend and then watched your free ball striking Mini-Course. I practiced these movements all weekend while watching The Masters. Headed to the practice range on Monday to try them out. Wow. What a difference I had in ball contact with my irons. Hit my Driver a little better. I played 18 holes on Tuesday on a tight course using these keys. I shot an 83 and I'm usually around 90. I hit the green on 3 of the 4 Par 3's, which I seldom do. And I made an Eagle on a 60 yard pitch shot on a par 4. My first Eagle in the last 9 years! These keys to better ball striking are gold. I still need to work on my Driver swing as I missed a good many fairways. But I was impressed with the way I hit the ball with my irons. I may have to sign up for your online golf scholl.

Without reservation, this is the best video instruction for tucking the right elbow in . At 71 years young my power and distance is diminishing. My wife and I tried this tuck move and we are ecstatic with the effortless results. Our chipping has become deadly accurate to boot. I would encourage all senior golfers to adopt this tucking move. Many many thanks, coach!!

This no doubt is a powerful move. Ben Hogans book is a present I got from a friend who introduced me to this game in the early 90’s. But I found his descriptions too detailed. Although I did go through the book. I think for a driver keeping your right elbow glued to your side is a bit restricting. For irons especially mid to short it works well. Nice tip and reminder for those of us who have studied his book.

Hi Tom. A crispy update on trail arm progress - she’s coming along rather nicely - and I feel the whole “crispier shot” thing is gradually increasing in frequency at the moment - which is just fine for me. I know I’m making real progress with your online course. 😜. This evening, I hit an intended lay-up 5 wood , my 3rd shot on a 530 yds par 5 (after a decent drive, but a poor second shot with my 3 wood) from 212 yards, thinking I’d hit it about 175 yds as usual, and then chip on. However... I connected perfectly, nice little draw. Fluid. Effortless. Felt really comfortable and natural. Couldn’t see it land as the hole is lower than the ridge which was in front of me, maybe 40 yds ahead from where I hit it. It ended 4 ft from pin. Sunk for birdie. Walking tall. Love this game. 😎

After studying your golf tips for a week, I've narrowed it down to 3 swing thought/tips. 1- weight on lead leg throughout swing. 2- turn shoulder down at the ball. 3- stay connected and fire the right arm into the ball. These 3 skills alone are key. I cant recommend enough for everyone to join your membership golf school. Once I did, I instantly found all the missing pieces in my golf swing that I wasnt understanding from only watching your youtube videos. Yesterday I saw this video and went to play a round and ended up shooting my best score (79) from my previous personal best 85. It helped keep the ball in play the whole round. Love it.

I'm a former Tennis player. And since I started playing Golf I always wondered why everyone disagreed with me when I told them that the right side hits the ball. After watching this video I now know i was right. and thank you for the best tip I have ever had.

I'm glad you found this video, Robert!! The transition from tennis to golf would be a very easy one if not for that erroneous bit of advice that sadly permeated deeply into the world of "conventional" instruction. Hopefully you are now well on your way to experiencing ball striking bliss!!

Love this! An add on, if you have trouble doing this, put a rag in between your back arm and your body and keep it pinned there while you swing. Helps you exagggerate that movement and force you into different muscle memory. 👍👍

I'm glad you enjoyed the "magic elbow", Zachary!! Yes - a rag or a golf glove works well. Actually in the Stack and Tilt book they suggest a drill where you hit shots with a tee stuck under each armpit and try to keep both tees in place throughout the entire swing.
      Thanks!

This is THE best swing thought. It sets the club in the right position, naturally hinges the wrists for lag, and delivers crispy and consistent contact. Every time. It’s easy too. When I start hitting it bad (usually fat) it’s because I’m disconnecting my arms from the body. Hogan’s elbow fixes this. Feeling the lag is awesome too.
