Great lesson. The key is practice the 60ft launches and keep a set of spare clutches.

Story time. During my first road race weekend, my friend pointed out that my starts kind of suck. It was a skill I had never practiced before so I didn’t know how to improve. After my second race, I came back to my pit and went to UA-cam University to search for a video that could help me improve. I came across this video and during my 3rd and final race of the weekend, I had such a good launch that I cleared the field and ended in P1 before the first turn. I started dead last during all races and although I managed to eventually work my way to first place in all, the last one was by far the easiest thanks to this video!

Keywords he mentioned, you need to set your clutch to that position. He adjusts his clutch on the bike ITSELF to where his finger is in between the grip and lever. and then the rest is, what he explained perfectly. :-) :-) get your bike setup to make things as consistent as possible so when you have to do any Feathering of the clutch and throttle, it's going to be far more consistent. Man is the legend! And 200 horsepower on a stock wheelbase is crazy! The amount of feel he has is just literally second to none! :-) :-) really enjoyed this!

Im confused about what he said about controlling the clutch. You have to keep it just disengaged and fully let go just before peak torque rpm? Could you clear it for me?

Wow. One of the best videos I've seen about motorcycle drag racing technique. (Wait, I'm not sure I've ever seen any videos before on how to correctly launch your bike!)
Well done Cycledrag, please keep it up

Great video ! I have a hell of a time getting my 2017 Ducati Panigale 1299S off the line, NO launch control but wheelie control on 1 or 2. Other then Akrapovic Titanium race exhaust with MAP upgrade, stock Dynaoed @ 198 rear wheel horse. Did 1 pass at the track 9.80 147.8 MPH. TERRIBLE reaction time as well. What fun!! I'm 72, weigh 175 lbs. The reaction when I take my helmet off, especially the police,, PRICELESS . Push it to the limits guys..

I learned how to do this on my RGV 250 2stroke, the amount of 600's I'd woop off the lights was unreal, it's defo a skill, riding the clutch at the biting point with super high revs,
Not only is it impressive with the speed but the absolute scream from any bike with a good exhaust system is amazing, not many people I've seen do it off the lights.
My last bike was a gsxr 600 K4 full yoshi system, hell of a sound doing a race start

Great words of wisdom from Rickey. Between him and Jay Gleason they are the best at getting a stock wheelbase bike down the track. Wish Jay was still around to glean from and there are no video's like this of Jay telling his secrets but you can see on some of his stuff that the launch was pretty close in technique. I have a 16 Vmax and just put it on the track for the first time about 6 weeks ago. Very few and mostly minor mod's. I don't want that big almost 700 bike coming up and back on me. Therefore it's a fine line working the clutch and throttle at the same time to achieve a great 60' time which is the key to a low ET. I did manage to get a 9.98 out of it last week which for a bike that I sometimes ride for pleasure or to work every other day I believe is doing something. It does take an amount of practice plus as one said additional clutch plates.

Many years ago Rickey gadson himself taught my father how to launch proper a drag motorcycle... My dad leave from greece and stay almost 6 months in united states just to learn how to properly drive a motorcycle down the track
All that knowlege came from the legend Rickey gadson....
Wonderful person, great driver, good teacher...

Hey thanks for this. I have my first bike race this weekend and I was curious what an experienced rider would think about launching correctly. It's nice that it's so simple, and confirmed what I thought - get it rolling and then hammer it. Aiming for 10s and I'll do it for you guys. Thanks for the inspiration 👍🏻

Thank you for this. Just a CB500X rider here looking how to pull off from a red light. I guess technique is more relevant for us on lower HP bikes. Legal where I'm from but I've had a few cars tailgate me from the indignation of a rider filtering in front of them so want to clear the lights as promptly as possible.

Maybe off topic for this video but looking at Ricky videos and looking at Chris videos, I feel that Rickey is more of a conservative rider than Chris. Chris is more reckless on the throttle, but it is a controlled recklessness. Therefore I feel that when these two lock up, it’s gonna be Chris for the win. Nothing against Rick, the man is a beast. It’s just Chris is a beast off the line
