Before the Datsun 510, was the Datsun 310 and before that, the Datsun 210. It’s a story of trial and error then finally, triumph.

I had a Datsun 510 ...for a three day weekend...it was a 1972 model, bright cherry red, with wheel flares, lowered two inches , and had Centerline racing wheels with 50 series B.F.Goodrich radials on it...it was cool as....but then, I had to give it back on Monday ... But, I got to drive it 400 miles....it was awesome.

Best car I ever owned. I had the second 510 2-door in Canada, with a little BRE help, it did everything. Great sports car, and it carried 3 passengers and kept them dry, drag racer-R/Stock record for month of August 1970, rallyed it-gently. Trick exhaust and mags; I had guys in Porches stopping me to look at it. Room enough to have s...fun in it too. Cheers from B.C.

we had one when I was a kid.. '71 I think...avocado green. Three kids and a cat on full blown 2.5 month summer camping trips...2 door...I was the youngest and got to sit where...the middle over the transmission hump. Ah, the memories...lived in upstate NY for most of the time...rusted out when my brother totaled it cutting in front of a late 70's land yacht station wagon...the "nippo" hadn't a chance...family name since all of the glass had "Nippon" etched on it...and it was quick in terms of its predecessor, a vw bus.
For the past 6 months I'm asking in the comments for 240Z, today I saw notification that there is new video by the Donut Media and the first thing I saw was Datsun, I was soo happy!! But then I saw 510... -.-
I know he talked about it in the 350Z/370Z video, but he only mention it, there is a lot more into the history of how this care was made, as Nissan didn't wanted to make it in the first place. At there is "Wangan Midnight" of course!! :)

randomdude 4014 Yeah it's roots trace back to the Mercedes Engine that Nissan/Datsun had the license to reproduce. Funny how it all works out though because Mercedes also use Renault engines in their baseline cars like the A-Class

Back in the 80s my girl friend's step-dad had one of these and I loved driving that thing. Meanwhile my step-mom had just bought an 81 Celica hatch. That was sweet but the 510 was more aesthetically pleasing.

You wasted all your time with the history of Nissan/Datsun and forgot mention anything we need to know about the *510*. Here's some important stuff you left out. The 510 has a semi trailing arm rear suspension that with body roll in corners it actually steers the car from the rear wheels. In 1970, Mister Katayama hired Peter Brock (the guy who designed the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coup) to start a race team for Datsun. Developing the 510 race platform, BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises), with driver John Mortan, they won two consecutive TransAm Manufacturer Championship titles competing against Alfa Romeo and BMW. The little 510 showed Europe it was the hottest shit, and proved the BMW 2002 was actually the slow man's 510. In fact, when the 320i came out, it copied the 510's four headlight grill and that's still BMW's plagiarized trademark to this day. The 510 is the OG Japanese tuner that ignited the whole JDM craze. Do your homework.
