We've played Spain in college at the end of our final exam. Our improvisations is the most emotional thing that we did and one of the most emotional thing what I heard ever. I wish to remaster it's recording in studio with our current skills.
What about "all of my favorite things?" I can never quite get a nice confident improv sound on that song. btw, thank you so much for making this video!!
Often with "my favorite things", the problem is the rhythms instead of the notes. Because its in 3, accents are off compared to the more common 4/4 improv. In terms of notes, pentatonics that fit with each chord work great for me, and it adds color when the pentatonic shifts slightly out of key.
Really great video Jeff. Really well shot, super clear explanations of the harmony and as usual awesome keyboard graphics. (I think maybe there was a typo with the F#7 diminished scale which was a half-whole but said whole-half?) Good stuff. 👍🏻
man i really enjoyed that:) , im still trying to work my head around from where you get those notes so i can transpose them:) , thought at first you where gonna give examples using over each chord the arpeggio from the 3rd of the chord hahaha, but then this blew me away, really amigo thank you. you have given me a lot to think about. such a beautiful song is it? . thanks you thank you thank you:)
Hey Jeff, I always enjoy your content, glad to see this "how to solo", as I tend to struggle a little bit in these harmonic minor scales bits. The F#7 right after the Gmaj7 sounds a bit weird, but it works fine I guess, but would you use the B harmonic minor or the Gm(maj7)add9 arpeggio over this chord instead? That makes sense, right?
In my view, this kind of instruction without relating the chords to the fundamental harmonic structure of the tune just tends to lead to a paint-by-numbers approach to soloing. The harmonic structure of this tune is totally traditional major-minor harmony. Also, I don't like talking about chord scales for soloing, unless it is an overtly modal tune or you are specifically trying to impose a modal concept onto a traditional harmonic structure. Of course practice your major and minor scales from all positions and practice using different tonal centers with each basic scale, and understand the different modes.
Nice!! But..The eighth chord of the solos- sequence. While it is true that in all the scores it says F#7 and everyone plays that, ChicK Corea always played C7. I know that it is the Tritone-Substitute and it is very similar, but it is a little detail that nobody respects. Regards from Spain!
Sorry, my teacher has taught me that rubbing notes against the third and the seventh isn’t very proper. Is there some sort of exception to this rule concerning your F#7? I only have been doing jazz for a couple of years so forgive any ignorance on my part.
I have a question about using the Half-Whole Diminished scale on Spain. It seems like a lot of the notes you recommend are just the H/W Dim scale skipping a couple of notes. Is it just to simplify it down? Or is it actually a different sound since you miss some of the half steps and it keeps it more open?
Hey All! Comment below with any requests for future breakdowns!

What about "all of my favorite things?" I can never quite get a nice confident improv sound on that song. btw, thank you so much for making this video!!
That's a deceptively simple song! Never can make it sound right.

Excellent. Very helpful.
I find some bossa-nova progressions quite tricky to solo on. How about Wave/Voi te contar?
South Of The River - Tom Misch would be great, I'm finding it difficult to play over the 2nd chord in the progression (G7alt?)

Thanks bro ,that was help me alot !
The tune is called spain so why not use Phrygian Dominant over the F#7 as it resolves to a minor chord for the ii V IV part Em A D7
I'd like to ideas hear how to solo on "This Maquerade" Leon Russell / George Benson
