I'm Not a vibeplayer but this to me is one of the best and most understandable tutos in the net. But: " Spain" is basically Inspiration by a Flamenco palo called the TARANTA . Chick Corea adapted some of the basic structures and harmonically transformed it into a context with western aproach. So if you want to make it sound spanish or andalucian one has to get back to the feel of Taranta and the way of Flamenco ....
I missed how my college professor breaks down jazz pieces for me, then saw this video, which is very similar to what my professor use to do(except last two levels). You are the best at teaching this stuff, stay blessed brother!
Wow! Never could crack this tune, I was always using straight "key of the moment" type playing and it never sounded right. As soon as you said to use the Arpps with the key signature all my musical furniture was moved. The scales have fallen from my eyes. You, Sir, rule the internet for a day!
Good ideas. I've always taught my students to learn the shapes of scales and be able to play them from the bottom to the top of the instrument. Your videos are very well done.
Not just a great video on how to play over Spain but you can totally take this approach to other standards as well, fantastic video. Love you way you broke that down
Thank you mr. Collins for mapping with numbers & colours every chord. It's fantastic for voice leading and phrasing fluently across the chord changes! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
bro the way you describe how what scale we are in but where we start and relating to the modes has helped me so much with your visualizations. i am a little drunk so words arent conveying what i mean but your visuals are amazing and very helpful. i only know my circle of fourths muscle memory, so this helps me kow hwere i need to practice!
Hello Tim, Im a keyboardist who play on a small gig and local cafes, didnt get enough education like music course or theory but at the same time I really like jazz and all the complex solo from famous artists or pro musicians friends. I play pop and and all arround music, self taught, and on my 4 or 5th years of music journey, i just realized that im lack at solos, clarity, technique, and fundamental of advanced chord progressions, most of what i did was based on feel and i realized that its not enough. I really thankful for ur lecture that i just watched, definitely gonna try it on my keyboard right after watching this hahah, its really helpful, thankyou Tim Collins, keep making great videos, greeting from Indonesia, subscribed
wow incredible! I though this tune was challenging enough on guitar let alone you playing it on percussive keys...its like playing piano and drums all at once...impressive!
My first exposure fo Tim Collins! I am blessed. The lesson was extraordinarily well produced, aided by careful planning and confirmed by Tim's relaxed performances. I learned so much. Thank you many times.
This might be the best introduction to improvisation I've seen on UA-cam. One thing I'd add -- the "Mixolydian ♭9♭13 scale" (3:45 and 5:00) is also called the Phrygian dominant scale. I get why you would rename it, but it is also good for people to know the conventional name.
Thank you! To be honest, I actually didn’t know the official name of that scale myself, otherwise I would have said it. Makes sense though. I think the most important thing is for people to understand that it’s coming from the harmonic minor.
Thank you so much for the way you've presented this. It's a lot easier for me to keep up with/retain the theory when I can hear the sound, hear the name, and see something to tie it together. Then while I go to practice it, I can use that visual scaffolding to recall the stuff until it becomes deep knowledge and I don't need the scaffolds anymore.
I'm completely blown away! This was incredible, thank you so much Tim. This gives so much food for thought as far as tackling any sort of chord changes, is concerned. Definitely gives you a lot to think about and go over!
This is really amazing!! I needed this exact video about 3 years ago when I was giging this tune with a small group and was really struggling with how to approach my theory thinking wile soloing (piano). I really love the way you broke down the theory - thinking of the whole tune as a variation on the Bm scale with a slight change for 3rds on the appropriate chord - so simple! And thanks for the great way you explained the shapes and the resulting theory - I am going to write all that down and use it in my practice (and steal it for other tunes) :) Became a 'Subscriber' after this video - which was my first one of yours! THX!!
Many thanks for this video! It`s just what I was looking for a long time who actually could explain me and show the ideas how to improvise the "Spain". And finally, there you are! Thanks again, Tim! You`re doing a really great job!
I'm not a vibes player but somehow this was one of the most clear videos out there on how to tackle these changes - Thanks!!
Thanks! The information is definitely universal regardless of instrument.
Exactly what I was about to comment...
Agreed
+1
Trumpet player here. Wow! I've watched a few YTs on Spain improv. This is by far the most useful. Brilliant
Thank you!

Thanks, Tim. Keep doing these videos. Thanks for showing the form concept visually; this helps learners like me to internalize the idea.
Simple clear explanations, picked up a few ideas from this thanks.
The difficulty with this tune is more the tempo is usually played at.
Brilliant!!! Just Brilliant!
Wow. Just discovered this channel. Great teacher. Saving to come here later to follow your lesson with more time. Thank you and greetings from Brazil
You are very excellent proff
Dude.. the SHAPES are an EPIC concept... please keep developing this for everyone.. plus theory explanations! Thanks Tim...

Excellent and simple explanation.
Great stuff Tim!
Thank you!
man, you are the man! great as always!
Instant new sub. Totally translatable to piano (except I have to transpose it all up a half step b/c the Jennings Big Band version is in Cm).
Thanks! A super systematic approach and a good presentation of the idea behind
Beautiful! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
a very clear approach to breaking down and ultimately improvising over this tune. thanks.
Amazing teacher! So Happy I found you Tim!!!!
Okay so I’m not crazy and you also see shapes on the vibe-great video as always Tim :)
Thanks man ;) Yeah, I've gotten more into the idea of shapes lately.. not sure what took me so long.
