Dang, soloing is a skill I wanna learn and you’re the best to teach me
The pace of this video was so good. Didn't over explain anything, and every tip was either 1) a refreshing reminder or 2) useful to learn. 9 minutes flew by, that was really great!

This also reminds me of Jazz Duets' video on Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity in the verse (it appears virtually the same chords following the circle of fourths etc as Isn't She Lovely) and with a melody from the Eb minor Pentatonic in that case.

Hey Jeff! Great video. One thing that was a bit confusing was that you were using #'s in your speech about the song but the keys onscreen mostly read flats. Nitpicky thing but it would be a great fix.

Songs to improvise on could be songs such as "People,get up and drive your funky soul" by James Brown, "Fly me to the Moon", "Superstitious" by Stevie Wonder, "Everybody Wants to be a Cat", "Hit the Road Jack" or even "Sweet Home Chicago" by the Blues Brothers !!
Hope you'll take these ideas into account ..!

I am not trying to be difficult, but as someone very interested in training my ear; I am having trouble hearing the notes due to the keyboard effect/tone. When you sang with the melody, I actually heard the notes more clearly. Probably just something on which, I need to continue to work. However, since I do enjoy your content, I am hoping to give some constructive feedback. Thanks for the great videos.
I've found that it's much easier to separate the note from it's 'tone' when it's more familiar. For example hearing notes better on a piano compared to a guitar. I've also found that it sorts it self out as your ear improves.

This is awesome stuff. What I'm curious about is why C# harmonic minor works over that chord? Can you use the harmonic minor from a 4th above on any dominant chord or is it specifically this one? Is it to do with how it sits over the underlying E major harmony and because the iii is not normally a III7 but acting as a secondary dominant to the following C#, with the non diatonic notes it brings lining up with C# minor? And lastly does that mean we're using the harmonic minor as a sort of framework but really playing the mode of C# from the fifth degree of harmonic minor, G# phrygian dominant? Thanks Jeff!

Brilliant analysis ! Any specific reason why you prefer to say C# Harmonic minor over the G# instead of calling it G# Phrygian dominant ? Wouldn't the latter be a bit more straightforward to express the resolution from G#alt to C#m7 ?
I've found most people use that since more people know the parent scale and there's one normal name. Personally I prefer to call it Spanish Major, but many others say Phrygian Dominant, and some others even Melodic Major b2(this just seems clunky though)
All a matter of getting folks to learn a note set that they can then shift the note focus, rather than 7 scales per scale pattern. At least that's what I've been told
E.g Some folks will find the scale of "Melodic minor on 7" faster than "Superlocrian" and vice versa
Really depends on if you want to relate it to the chord or the key. The B section starts in the key of C#m (bVI-V-i), so relating it to the key makes a lot of sense. When I think of G# Phrygian dominant, I think of a song with G# as the tonic (more of a "flamenco" sound), for example the A section in "La Fiesta" would be a context where I would call the scale E Phrygian dominant instead of A harmonic minor, because the A section is clearly centered around E, not A.
But sure, if you want to relate everything to just the chord that you are playing over at the moment, then G# Phrygian dominant would make sense. C# harmonic minor just tells you more about the overall context - it's a functional progression, so the context of the harmony matters, not just the individual chord that you are playing over, and in this case the context is a bVI-V-i progression in the key of C# minor.

So many comments about Giant Steps... there are already hundreds of videos on youtube about soloing over it and I don't know what new content he would be able to talk about that hasn't already been discussed to death.

I've been using Amaj (C# minor[vi]) then over the F#7 C# Dorian because the Bb sounds so good there and over the Ab7b13 using A Melodic Minor. Way more thinking but as you said Jeff, sing the melody and play it. Probably the best advice of all really. Of course, phrasing is key over changes that move this fast but there's so much to do in this tune. Cdim arpeggio sounds dynamite as a sub for the Melodic minor scale. I find Harmonic minor is too ethnic for it. Just my 2 cents. Great tune to focus on. I remember when I started running solo's over this one. I could hear it all but didn't know how best to find it. Ya gotta walk through it. :)

What do you think about approaching soloing by thinking about the chord tones instead of a scale that covers all of the chords? It just feels more natural for me but I don't know if it has any advantages or disadvantages in comparison to improvising with specific scales in mind.
