Spider-Man’s baby was a by-product of the 90s Clone Saga going on in comics at the time. Marvel was trying to “retire” Peter in favor of the “real” Spider-Man Ben Reilly, and wanted to give him a child to justify and reinforce the change. The sprite work on MJ was practically lifted from Spectacular Spider-Man 220, the announcement issue. When MSHvSF came out in 1997, the Clone Saga was over and Peter was restored as Spider-Man, with the baby having been “written out” of the comics (it’s way WAY more complicated than that, trust me). Hence no baby for Capcom Peter.
So they were trying to retire Peter even back then, huh? I believe Miles is currently being set up to be Peter's potential replacement but that hasn't happened yet. If you don't mind me asking, were there other instances of Marvel trying to retire Peter after the Clone Saga ended?

Peter was supposed to retire a long time ago, man...but the fucking fans were "noooo, chaaange b-b-baad! We want da peeetaaah!"
@@cicada8981 It's less trying to replace Peter as Spider-Man and more trying to bring Spider-Man back to status quo. The Clone Saga was Marvel's attempt to replace Peter with "The Real Peter" while still maintaining continuity (Marvel prided itself on such a thing back then, and while retcons were still employed to various effects, they still wanted to maintain the notion of a growing Marvel Universe). Of course, when reaction (initially positive) eventually turned south, Marvel undid the changes (again, maintaining continuity) and turned Peter back to "The Real Peter", but that meant sacrificing a little bit of his growth in eliminating The Baby, because how could a responsible adult go out at night and risk his life when he has a family at home (REALLY insulting to military, police and rescue workers). Marvel has always been trying to bring Peter back to the "single fun-loving hero" he started out as, pretty much the moment he married Mary Jane, hence why they killed her off (temporarily), separated them, and then made a deal with the devil (all in that order) to get Peter back to that status.
There's really never been an attempt to replace Peter as Spider-Man after the Clone Saga, as far as I am aware. In 1998, Marvel "ended" ASM with Pete retiring, bringing it back months later with a new character Mattie Franklin as Spider-Man for a VERY short (like 2-4 issues) run that obviously wasn't ever a permanent thing (if anything, that was meant to bring back Spider-Woman with Franklin...it lasted about a year, if that). Doc Ock taking over Pete's body and becoming the Superior Spider-Man definitely wasn't permanent, but did last surprisingly long. Really, the closest thing you could say about replacing Peter is Ultimate Spider-Man, a book meant to run concurrently with the core books so that casuals can enjoy adventures without being bound to continuity, especially in light of the films.
Ironic how THAT series and the Ultimate Universe became a burden unto itself that resulted in its permanent destruction. Really highlights how the core Marvel Universe is something you can't simply replicate by the numbers. There was an inexplicable magic to it, not so much a formula to be duplicated, and as soon as writers stop trying to "go back", perhaps they can move on and make GOOD comics again. But to do that, Marvel needs to return itself to a story-creating company, not a brand-dispensing one.
NOTES: 1995 listed as the year for X-Men Mutant Academy 2 was an unintended error. Should be 2001! Also, had no idea there was a versus mode in Super Hero Squad, and Spidey was selectable. Thanks to those that pointed that out!
Disney Infinity 3.0 had Marvel Battlegeounds, a fighting game esque mode.

Also noted: Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter (1996) was abbreviated as MHS vs Street Fighter. I absolutely would kill for a 90s themed "High School" fighting game between Marvel and Capcom now, like a "Rival Schools/Cromartie High MvC"... Even in error, Matt knows what the people want!

In Spider-Man's stance, it feels like Capcom was going for a more McFarlane feel, which is underlined by how they postured Venom. Just glad they didn't eff up the proportions as often as he did...
We had a house rule playing original Marvel v Capcom in college: NO Spider-man.
(It was really for one person in the group. You know the type... He'd pick Spider-Man and annihilate us every round. Then, when he would lose ONCE, suddenly he didn't want to play anymore.)

So about Contest of Champions, there's indeed quite a lot of variation of Spidey (and most of them gives him new animation, gameplay etc. because of course it's a mobile game so it has to make you want to spend money), but on those image you displayed, that version of Spider-Gwen and Miguel do not exists, I assume those are fan-made
When I first started playing fighting games, my go-tos in Marvel vs Capcom was Mega Man and Spider-Man, or the "Maximum Buster" combo. Two characters from both sides that's easy to learn and master. Basically chaining Tornado Hold and Web Swing for serious air time.
Though his ending... Is the beginning to the storyline of One More Day. OOOOOOOOOF.
My team was Mega Man and Venom, but I'd occasionally play Mega Man and Spider-Man.
As much as I and everyone else loves the mask on a mask in the intro, my favourite part is hearing that pained 'Ugh' after he falls

i just love the classic spider arcade sprite. the slumped posture, the gangly arms, the sucked-in gut, the suit that looks like it came off the rack of a spirit halloween...if you told me it was rotoscoped from a porn parody id believe it.

Since you counted Friend or Foe then Marvel's Superhero Squad game counts and it has a multiplayer fighting mode where Spidey is the special unlockable character for getting tokens in all the levels.
The Black suit is was a Walmart exclusive for the game and 2099 was his main alternate costume .
I really enjoyed the mode me and one of my friends loved playing the mode.
Also I had that Avengers game and remember having fun with it but it was definitely way to short.
I also don't get the hate for MVCI I really liked it it's fun and has a fun story
Just as an FYI, 11:43 to 11:53 isn’t actually from Contest of Champions. That’s just a fan animation by Nick Cross who has made a ton of them. I recognized the name because he also made a fake trailer for The One Above All that almost got me to try out the game until I did some research and found it was fake. It’s why unlike all the other footage there’s no damage numbers or super bars. If you need more proof, go to his his channel page right now and you’ll see that the most recent CoC trailer he’s got is not only for Omni Man vs Homelander, but Omni Man is doing the meme pose in the thumbnail.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was one of the first Spidey games i ever played. Hardly a top ten entry, but it was charming. AND it had a Spectacular Spider-Man teaser in the options menu so that was fun to rewatch

I always play as Spider-Man in any game he's in. He's always been one of my top mains in the MvC series along with Morrigan, Mega Man and Chun-Li. He's so fun to use and Capcom really did him a lot of justice in the MvC series.

Mutant Academy 2 is a ton of fun. It felt fast and smooth and there were a lot of characters to check out. Spider-Man was a nice surprise to unlock.

Don't know if this counts or if anyonew has said this yet but in Disney Infinity 3.0 there was a mode/playset that put the Marvel characters into a 3d arena braawler. If you had the figure or used the rental coins you could play as Spiderman (if I am remembering correctly).
How much longer until Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales make cameos of this nature?
In the hypothetical 1/14,000,605 chance that Marvel and Capcom get back together for another vs. game I'd be shocked if Miles wasn't a main roster character. He's probably the most popular addition to Marvel's lineup from the last decade (although Kamala Khan is also definitely up there)
I just wanna say 95' and 96' as a child growing up was a special time in my life for these games. Capcom was on 🔥 with Alpha 2, XvSF, SF EX, Star Gladiator. So glad my uncle got me into video games 🙏

It's amazing to see such perspective in the role of Spiderman in fighting games beyond just the Marvel vs games. From things like the Marvel Nemesis games (the game has like 3 different versions) to that Mobile game Contest of Champions. This sure will be a great time.

Love that Friend or Foe's versus mode was included too. But aside from Super Hero Squad, there was also a versus mode in Ultimate Spider-Man's DS version (of all things!). It's hard to find footage of it though...

Just a heads up, you had X-Men: Mutant Academy 2 listed as 1995, but it was released in 2001. That confused the hell out of me for a minute. Other than that, loved the video, and the intro brings back so many fond memories of the 90's Spider-Man cartoon.

Its sad that Capcom lost the Marvel license. He ABSOLUTELY would be a dlc guest character in street fighter v or 6. His aesthetic and moveset fit so well in SF universe that it isnt even funny

You forgot to mention that Spiderman got a new special move in MvCI, the Spider Cannon, which wallbounces.
Spiderman continued to be very strong even after Reality Stone was nerfed as he got a lot of mileage from Power Stone, which had excellent synergy with Web Glide.
Infinite also brought back Venom, who got quite a bit of new stuff, like the traps, an aerial combo extender special and Web Glide, so he also got a lot of mileage out of Power Stone. Spidey and Venom with Power Stone was actually a decently popular team in tournaments at one point.

I remember there was a Super Hero Squad show that I also watched when I was little, but Spider-Man didn't appear there.
So I was excited to see him in that video game.

I recently got into fighting games and have been majorly hyped by a recent ongoing Spider-Man comic (the new ultimate spider man series) for the first time potentially ever, so based topic
OOO you missed the disney infinity battlegrounds disc/playset, a power stone style game mode of multiple marvel characters in an arena battle royal. You could play spider, black suit spider and venom.
Man, the zoomers have absolutely no idea how in their bag Capcom was in the 90’s. I played the crap out of MvC2 on the crappy Dreamcast controller. One of the peak 2D fighters and those sprites will never age poorly.
When do you think Marvel vs Capcom collection will go to consoles and PC? They are on 1Up Arcade after all.
