Damn shame what’s happened to them. They haven’t even had a full 3 year development cycle on their COD games since Black Ops 3 in 2015. BO4 had its campaign cut & replaced with a Battle Royale mode due to an over ambitious concept, Black Ops: Cold War had to be rushed out in 18 months & be a PS5 & Xbox Series S|X launch title & Vanguard Zombies feels like it had even less time than that (combined with having to adjust to a new engine as Vanguard was made with the Modern Warfare (2019) engine instead of what Treyarch have been using & evolving since World at War) with how barebones it is. As someone who's completed the bomb mission on the hardest difficulty many times, I can confidently say that it's not random at all. It's hard as hell though, that's for sure. On the superhero difficulty it requires nigh perfect timing, as well as knowing well the enemy placements and the best path from one bomb to another. You also have to consistenly web certain robots before they shoot, because their damage is insane and they can obliterate you in a couple of seconds. Really hated this mission while I was still learning the ins and outs and struggling with it, but now it's my personal highlight of the game. On the hardest difficulty the mission is such an adrenaline rush that there is nothing quite like it in any other Spider-Man game, a really unique and intense skillcheck that could only exist in a Spidey game. Really liked the GBA version as well, although the second Kraven boss fight is a bitch.
I remember when I first played the green goblin campaign I thought "HA!!! This damn robots will see!!" But no, it still was a pain even with the green goblin
@@SullySadface Ah, damn. It wasn't until I saw it spelled out just now that I figured out WHY they chose EEL NATS. But then, it was years since I last picked it up.
The best thing this game did was model itself after the Neversoft PS1 Spider-Man game. Better sequel to that than Enter Electro, for certain. Edit: Follow-up would probably be a more accurate term than sequel, come to think of it.
This game takes me back man. This and PS1 Spider-Man were the ones I played the most. I even remember trying to do Green Goblin runs of this game, he was busted.
Oh the movie tie-in, not sequel to the Ps1 games. Neat, always had fun with this one and that Harry Osborn mode was infinitely superior to the "New Goblin" we eventually got
Bro, Matt... you have NO IDEA how long I've been looking for Die By The Sword. I remember playing an early 3D knight game in the 90's that my computer barely ran and I've been trying to find it for over 20 years. THANK YOU!!!!!
Honestly the most fun cool part was you could eventually play the whole game as the Green Goblin. Had that been done now we all know that the content would have been $$$$ dlc.
One other thing to note is the cheat where you unlock the Mary Jane skin. It’s only available in the black label version of the game and not the Greatest Hits re-release. My guess is that it was removed because of the ending cutscene where, if you equip that skin, makes it look like Mary Jane was making out with herself.
This was my first experience, at least that I can remember, with Spiderman. Considering I'm an actual pro wrestler now who takes a ton of inspiration from The Wall Crawler, this game basically put me on a path I never really thought about until I saw this video.
Man I really love this game. My ps2 copy is so old that it still has the two girls one bridge oversight. Scorpion's story being cut makes a lot of sense. Even as a kid I thought something was missing. They prop him up only for him to disappear after 1 level leaving no closure. I'm surprised you didn't mention the lab levels. Those were so intense as a kid.
Sometimes I think Die By the Sword doesn't actually exist, and was just a fever dream I had...... and then sometimes it's mentioned in a Spider-Man review, naturally.
The Green Goblin was so fun to play as, also you were able to use the cheat to unlock all levels, load up the final cutscene on the hardest difficulty (this unlocks Goblin)
Hello Matt, it is me, a future person. Sony's Kraven the Hunter was great, it made a Kravillion dollars, and my favorite part was when the camera panned to Kraven's face and he said "It's Kravin time!" and started Kraving on people.
What I remember the most is that giant robot mission. I use to think that was so dang cool I replayed it many times just to see it. The size of it was so neat to me. Plus the “stealth” section in Oz Corp is kind of what got me into stealth in the first place. Overall a solid game but nothing crazy. Loved it though
@@StudioInkblot I had to re look it up, it’s Oz Corps ultimate weapon. It’s right before you go into the office to steal paperwork from an office. That’s a crap explanation but that’s the best I got lol
I first played this game in 2004 when I was 4 and I remember never being able to get past the mission when u go inside the building lol. My cousin helped me get past the game but it was a fun experience, I was obsessed with the movies Spider-man 1 and 2 and this was the first game I chose to go with my ps2. Once I got Spider-man 2 I remember being I'm shock about the open world and swinging, I still replay it every year it's probably my favorite game of all time. I just love good superhero games like Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Spider-man 1,2, web of shadows, shattered dimensions, Ultimate Spider-man, batman arkham games, X-men Origins Wolverine and so many more. I keep my 360 and ps2 hooked up to always be able to play these classics
It's funny that you release this on this week in particular. I was just reminiscing about this game earlier this week. In particular, how absolutely ballin' some of the movie tie-in game's music tracks are, like the Green Goblin's theme. I have some fond memories of this game and even though the swinging is way out classed by Spider-Man 2, I think the level design and storytelling were pretty good, especially for the time.
I rented this for a holiday weekend and had a blast. I still fondly remember it, despite the frustrating stealth levels. The only thing that sucked about it is that it was really short to the point I beat it as Spider-Man and the Goblin while still having time to screw around with cheat codes, all within a three day weekend. Probably would've been even better with more development time, a bigger budget and more free reign to do a different story that existed within the Raimi universe. Would've been cool to see what they could come up with, like maybe Kingpin as a major villain or something.
I’m glad you not only talked about this Game but also the GBA version as well. I love the PS1 Spider-Man Games more though since I played those when they came out. But man to go back 20 Years when I was 15 all over again playing this Game just brings back so many memories. Especially playing as Goblin. Never realized the controls were the same as the PS1 Titles, though I knew I had seen them before 🤣
A couple of fun facts: 1) All the cheat codes were in the official movie poster where they would normally print the movie credits. 2) Dwight Schultz, the voice actor for the Vulture in this game reprised his role for the 2018 game
Technically, this was Spider-Man 3. I mean it's techincally (mechanically?) a successor to Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. I have a vague memory of I think the actual Spider-Man 3 game having a reference to Enter Electro as well I think.
I'm pretty sure this was the 1st videogame I sunk alot of my childhood into that wasnt my older brothers Super Mario World cart. All the unlockable costumes and cheats ruled. I was so glad that Ultimate Spiderman brought that spirit back with all the costumes and Venom mode, because that lack of extras really dragged the Spiderman 2 tie-in game down.
One of my "favorite" memories of this game was using the cheat code to play as Mary Jane and I skipped levels I didn't like playing. After I beat the Green Goblin, I watched as the Mary Jane I was playing as made out with the NPC Mary Jane. It was the first time I've ever seen something like that and it's still funny to me how Treyarch didn't think of the consequences when they made the cheats
It's crazy how much games from your childhood are engrained in your memory. I haven't seen this game in probably 18 years but still remember it so vividly.
This game was so much fun back in the day. It was a proper evolution from the previous PS Spider-Man games, which those I thoroughly enjoyed, before Spider-Man 2 completely changed the formula for future Spider-Man games. It holds up really even today and reminds me of a simpler time in gaming.....
I remember if you had the original release of this game (which I do have) you could type in a code that lets you be Mary Jane only she was clearly taller to match Spider-Man's height and at the end of the game in this mode Mary Jane makes out with herself. I assume Activision realized their mistake because upon the game's Greatest Hits release they altered it to where you couldn't be Mary Jane but just a random reporter lady and I think the cutscene just shows Spider-Man kissing MJ in that version.
This game will always hold a special place in my heart, it just has so much going on that works. Sadly what doesnt work is turning around and half the combat. Turning is an animation on its own if you turn too far which has got me killed, and the fights with the foes who can break your combos or just grab you outright are a chore to deal with. Theres no real defense options so you gotta jump and pray
You forgot to mention 2 things: One, there was a tutorial and a some minigames where the narrator is Bruce Campbell, being his usual self of course. And one of the cheats made you into Mary Jane, which if you beat the game with, has her making out with herself on the bridge. This was reportedly removed in later copies of the game
I thought for sure when you mentioned one level being terrible, you were going to mention the Oscorp secret weapon level, not too bad on easy difficulty but practically unplayable on the hard difficulty!
I remember when Walmart had this game on their game system kiosk, I learned how to unlock Green Goblin and used that in their kiosk. All the other kids around were losing their s**t that I was playing as Green Goblin lol
"the emerald elf" still call goblin that to this day referencing the spectacular Spider-Man, josh Keaton voicing Harry here is hilarious. Goblin voiced by spiderman lmao
You forgot to mention one big thing Treyarch didnt JUST port spider-man to the sega dreamcast they also ported it to Windows 2000, Windows ME, and the OS i grew up on and what got me to play the game and fall in love with marvel back in 2004: WIndows XP
I feel Norman looks more like future George Stacy Denis Leary than Willem Dafoe. Also I recall the game initially had MJ has an unlockable skin but it was removed in subsequent copies due to the ending where Spidey kisses MJ, so in turn MJ would be kissing herself. Different times, man.
Man, I still play this game from time to time, another highlight for me personally was the inclusion of the grooviest man himself as a narrator in these games. Awesome review Matt.
I remember playing Spiderman on PS2 having trouble with a stealth mission going through vents and such and also that fight on the bridge, but thats basically all i remember from this game
It Blew my mind when I learned that you could play the game as Green Goblin and as someone who used the cheats i was like "oh it'll be like the other cheats where its just a skin like how Shocker was just a skin" and then you play as Goblin w/ Glider and has his own set of moves My 9yr old MIND WAS BLOWN AWAY. In another reality someone figured out how to mod in a VS mode for the game where you could play as Goblin Vs Spider or any of the other villains
I remember playing this it was so awesome! The stealth levels were disturbing to me as a young lad but beating the game older is just awkward good memories fighting green Goblin kicked my butt so many times
Since they didnt have access to the movie, maybe they were like, “I would THINK Green Gobs would plant bombs in places and Spidey has to defuse em.” So they made that mission with that assumption?
OH MAN DIE BY THE SWORD WAS SO EPIC BRO, good old memories. The combat system was so much fun, plus the interactivity..You could chop of a ghoul's arms and pick it up and use it as a weapon. The interactivity was so good for its time. It needs a remake. Like..Pronto
I remember getting this on PS2 and enjoying it for a while (though not finishing it). That was a fun birthday gift along with seeing the movie! Great video!
I played this one a lot with a friend when it came out, but I never owned it until many years later. To this day I'm still stuck on that damn bomb mission.
on the topic of cheat codes and some of the people on the team adding glider mechanics to allow goblin gameplay.. people just really had fun back then didn’t they.

This was the mission that made me give up on trying to beat the game on the hardest difficulty.
The "unlock everything" cheat being Arachnid was SO clever
the ps1 title used "EEL NATS" for that cheat iirc
@@SullySadface Ah, damn. It wasn't until I saw it spelled out just now that I figured out WHY they chose EEL NATS. But then, it was years since I last picked it up.
@@cjhedrick6418 why’s it eel nats then?
@@Gamingproductionv2 It's Stan Lee backwards.
The best thing this game did was model itself after the Neversoft PS1 Spider-Man game. Better sequel to that than Enter Electro, for certain.
Edit: Follow-up would probably be a more accurate term than sequel, come to think of it.
_"...Or be forced to watch Morbius!"_
You monster!
This game takes me back man. This and PS1 Spider-Man were the ones I played the most. I even remember trying to do Green Goblin runs of this game, he was busted.
What no talk about the big controversy of this game? Being able to have mj and mj kiss with the cheat code.
This game, the PS1 Spiderman games, and the Spiderman 2 game were some of my favourites as a kid. So nostalgic
Oh god I played this so much as a kid. this was one of my favorites on the PS2!
Also didn't know about Goblin mode! looked like an absolute blast!
I loved this game as a kid. I had the PC version and I played it A LOT.
I don't even remember the giant robot
@@StudioInkblot I had to re look it up, it’s Oz Corps ultimate weapon. It’s right before you go into the office to steal paperwork from an office. That’s a crap explanation but that’s the best I got lol
@@HELLO1110able It's fine, you sneak in the office, then you go to the lab, then BAM, gian robot, there's really no other explanation.
Timetraveler from the future here. I'm pissed Doc Ock got the full frontal nudity and Kraven didn't.
I've played this game, like a lot. Flying around with the Green goblin and his glider and throwing pumpkin bombs was amazing
I've discovered you recently, and as a big spider-fan I have to admit: your intro is AMAZING, Matt!!
That Oscorp level gave me PTSD as a kid. Never have I felt like a failure in life and scared of robots at the same time.
I’m glad you not only talked about this Game but also the GBA version as well. I love the PS1 Spider-Man Games more though since I played those when they came out. But man to go back 20 Years when I was 15 all over again playing this Game just brings back so many memories. Especially playing as Goblin. Never realized the controls were the same as the PS1 Titles, though I knew I had seen them before 🤣
A couple of fun facts:
1) All the cheat codes were in the official movie poster where they would normally print the movie credits.
2) Dwight Schultz, the voice actor for the Vulture in this game reprised his role for the 2018 game
Man seeing that 2snacks opening with the round heads brings me back.
Technically, this was Spider-Man 3. I mean it's techincally (mechanically?) a successor to Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro.
I have a vague memory of I think the actual Spider-Man 3 game having a reference to Enter Electro as well I think.
More mechanically since this was more in line with the movie's story.
Noticed my Hobgoblin video (and mod) at 11:17! Love the channel, Keep up the good work!
It's crazy how much games from your childhood are engrained in your memory. I haven't seen this game in probably 18 years but still remember it so vividly.
You could say that in this game, Green Goblin is the Virgil to Spider-Man's Dante.
"Fuck you Spider-Man!"
-The Green Hulk
This game was so much fun back in the day. It was a proper evolution from the previous PS Spider-Man games, which those I thoroughly enjoyed, before Spider-Man 2 completely changed the formula for future Spider-Man games. It holds up really even today and reminds me of a simpler time in gaming.....
John de Lancie was attached to this at some point? Having Q and Discord as Norman Osborn would be very interesting.
I went back at your old video and was thinking if you were going to do updates. I'm glad you did
Ya ain’t slick with that Fesh Pince reference, McMuscles. “Numbers, numbers, numbers,” indeed.
Who else vividly remembers playing this game as a kid,
Attempting to go further than the game let you,
trying to go onto the ground. Lol
Sneaking through Oscorp and then having to escape were probably the hardest things I've ever had to do in games.
The intro to this alone was enough for me to subscribe, keep up the content💯
I always replayed the missions using Harry’s Green Goblin. Things became so much easier with him 😂.
You forgot to mention 2 things:
One, there was a tutorial and a some minigames where the narrator is Bruce Campbell, being his usual self of course.
And one of the cheats made you into Mary Jane, which if you beat the game with, has her making out with herself on the bridge. This was reportedly removed in later copies of the game
The one before the Spider-Man game that would change everything.
I thought for sure when you mentioned one level being terrible, you were going to mention the Oscorp secret weapon level, not too bad on easy difficulty but practically unplayable on the hard difficulty!
That game made Spinneret a thing before the comics did. Yes, Mary Jane was a Spider-Person in the comics, but that was after this game...right?
I remember when Walmart had this game on their game system kiosk, I learned how to unlock Green Goblin and used that in their kiosk. All the other kids around were losing their s**t that I was playing as Green Goblin lol
I remember seeing that alt goblin costume and was never able to find any thing backing it up I thought I imagined the whole thing
"the emerald elf" still call goblin that to this day referencing the spectacular Spider-Man, josh Keaton voicing Harry here is hilarious. Goblin voiced by spiderman lmao
You forgot to mention one big thing
Treyarch didnt JUST port spider-man to the sega dreamcast
they also ported it to Windows 2000, Windows ME, and the OS i grew up on and what got me to play the game and fall in love with marvel back in 2004: WIndows XP
On a related note, Spiderman 1&2 for the PS1 were such amazing games.
The fact you didn’t talk about the missions “Breaking and Entering” and “Chemical Plant” being horrifying is a surprise.
Man, I still play this game from time to time, another highlight for me personally was the inclusion of the grooviest man himself as a narrator in these games.
Awesome review Matt.
The intro just made me think of something very silly: spiderman but wears a different mask for each expression.
I remember playing Spiderman on PS2 having trouble with a stealth mission going through vents and such and also that fight on the bridge, but thats basically all i remember from this game
I completely forgot about Die By The Sword. Thank you for bringing back that part of my childhood
In another reality someone figured out how to mod in a VS mode for the game where you could play as Goblin Vs Spider or any of the other villains
bro, they made limited webbing before sam raimi decided peter will have organic webbing...
Absolutely played the shit outta this game all summer during release and loved that you could unlock green goblin to play as
Always a sign of a good Saturday when a new Spider-Matt video drops.
I remember playing this it was so awesome! The stealth levels were disturbing to me as a young lad but beating the game older is just awkward good memories fighting green Goblin kicked my butt so many times
I always watch your "wha happens" but never seen these spiderman videos. Been binging these all day😂 these are awesome 👌
I've watched so many of these, and today was the first time I noticed Matt pulls his spider mask over a spidermask in the intro lmao
"Little baby Matt" dude we were both 18 when that movie came out so....
Fair, yeah. Little babies.
I remember playing as green goblin in this Spider-Man game it was so cool to be able to play as the villian
I remember getting this on PS2 and enjoying it for a while (though not finishing it). That was a fun birthday gift along with seeing the movie! Great video!
I played this one a lot with a friend when it came out, but I never owned it until many years later. To this day I'm still stuck on that damn bomb mission.
i didnt remember that bomb level being so hard. until i remember i always played this game on easy mode as a kid
Wow this really brings back a flood of memories!
on the topic of cheat codes and some of the people on the team adding glider mechanics to allow goblin gameplay.. people just really had fun back then didn’t they.
I had this game as a kid. First Spider-Man game I ever owned. Never actually beat it on my own though--me and my brother just used the level skip cheat to jump past levels that were too hard for us. But still, I have very fond memories of beating the Green Goblin in the last level as Shocker ("SHOCKER!").
The intro means everything to me great job!
What the heck man! I had to rewatch the intro and barely noticed doc ovine tentacle squeeze… what the heck is this channel! Instant sub btw for intro alone.
I forgot about the bowling game that shit was so much fun. Oh and playing as Goblin was insane.
