      Agreed. If we want more comparisons with Street Fighter:
      _Fatal Fury Special_ = _Super Street Fighter 2_
      _Real Bout Fatal Fury Special_ and _2_ = _Street Fighter Alpha 2_ and _3_
      _Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition_ = _Street Fighter EX2_
      _Garou: Mark of the Wolves_ = _Street Fighter 3: Third Strike_
      _Neo Geo Battle Colliseum_ = _Capcom Fighting Evolution_
      And if you include KoF into that list, the similarities become even more apparent.
      I'd say _The King of Fighters XV_ is equal to _Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition._

    Just to mention it, due to Brazil being heavily influenced by piracy during the PSX era, Real Bout Dominated Mind was kinda the norm. Was so engraved with players around here that when I tried Real Bout 2 on PS2 I was bummed that Final Impacts were absent... Anyway Matt, thank you. Holy shit.

      I was gonna say, pirated games were very common here in Brazil and weren't limited to US English releases. I played many a Japanese PS1 games like that back in the day, I played much more Soul Edge than Soul Blade for example. There's even a documentary showing how piracy actually made gaming here possible.

    Hell of a retrospective.
    As far as the Canon goes, Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting were connected, AoF 1 and 2 taking place about 10 years before FF (AoF2's secret ending and boss fight against young Geese taking place before he murders Jeff Bogard) while KoF is an alternate universe, hence why Geese never died and AoF and FF characters are of similar age groups,etc.

    • @AirLancer
      @AirLancer 3 роки тому +22

      You'd think after an experience like that he'd want to hold on to it.

      @@AirLancer sorry, man. That was a joke amongst fans. Like I said, the scroll he had that helped him survive the fall, was called the Scroll of the Phoenix. All it did was speed up his recovery, not becoming invulnerable. Have to correct myself in that last comment. By the way, he should hold on to the scroll longer, but Matt did say Geese tore up all 3 Scrolls of the Jin, so that no one would get a leg up on him. Some things are better in hindsight, which pretty much sucks.

    It's so crazy to me on how long it took me to get into the SNK library. Growing up, I only knew them as the guys who made Metal Slug 2 and its bopping soundtrack. Terry and KOF were out of my sight for years.
    Come this year, in the middle of college, burnt out with a handful of AAA games, I decided to begin emulating my old library. One thing led to another and I was able to get a handful of my library running on RetroArch.
    When I first saw KOF as a game, it was on a sale for cheap on GOG and I was still getting into PC gaming at the time, spending $7 at most on games for sale that got my interest. It was definitely a while since I played Street Fighter V, so I took a chance with the sale for KOF 98 UM Final Edition.
    At first glance, I had the feeling that this was a cop out capcom fighting game, as it played similarly out of the box. I'd pick characters like Ryo, Kyo, and Terry because they seemed more Capcom-esque to start with. The game turned out to be more complicated than I thought.
    I did however take note on its incredible arcade OST's, as they were, almost all the time, fun to jam to than play. I later found the arrange soundtracks for the titles and KOF ones in question during the summer and realized something: SNK at their peak makes better music than Capcom for fighting games. The songs hyped me up, even though I never played any of the games during summer.
    When school came back in session, I'd begin my runs through the first 3 KOF games between engineering classes and had a blast learning and vibing to the games and their mechanics. Somewhere down the line, I would like to play the Fatal Fury games as I have already listened to FF2 Special and Real Bout Arrange Soundtracks so many times, it took over my music queues for a week! Learning how to play some of the songs as I started playing guitar this year.
    Capcom will always be near and dear to my heart, for their art, designs, music, & that game-style feel that made me play video games in the first place (Still love them to this day even with their highs and lows). But I was genuinely surprised this year with what SNK had to offer, and for what is in store for me when I do play some of their other amazing games down the line.
    ALSO: Thanks for that GOD HAND take earlier! Just heard about the game months ago and am still finding new details about their production even now! Can't wait to play it after I finish Silent Hill 3!

    I was lucky enough to be living in Japan in the mid-90s and a video rental store near where I lived had a mini-arcade which always seemed to get the latest Neo Geo games. Thus, I was lucky enough to play Road to the Final Victory, Real Bout and Real Bout Special when they first hit arcades. Enjoyed them so much that when I finally overspent on getting a Neo Geo CD (mainly to get Samurai Shodown 2; the greatest fighting game ever made--no arguments, it just is) I got all three of those as well; super long loading times and all!

    I never thought about how on the rare occasions when other fighting game franchises borrow SNK characters, it's always the most well known Fatal Fury characters rather than any KOF ones, even now, 2 years after this video was released, we're getting Terry and Main in SF6 (although that's most likely the case thanks to Fatal Fury coming back than anything else), the only mention of a KOF original character being even considered as a guest character that I can think of in recent memory, is Harada briefly mentioning Rugal as an example when discussing guest characters for T8, and as cool as that would be, I really wanna see Rock Howard as a guest in T8 more than any other SNK character

    Dude, I'm going to make you jealous. I have an old copy of Fatal Fury 3 for the PC that came out when I was young. It's one of the main reasons why I became such a big fan of Fatal Fury. I have no idea where my parents found it, but I still have it to this day.

    Awesome retrospective. I know very little about the series, except I had played Fatal Fury, the first one, in an arcade cabinet at a birthday party in Burger King when I was very young. I didn't even know the name of the game but remember enjoying it a lot. I remember not being able to beat the old dude who gets muscular in the middle of the match but I'm glad to see how many entries this series has spawned. It actually makes me nostalgic of my younger days.

      I'm not trying to make fun of you but I am curious. I am American and I have never heard of anyone having a "birthday party in Burger King", nor do I ever remember coin-ops being at any Burger Kings. What country was this in?

    • @shahrouh
      @shahrouh 3 роки тому +1

      @@originalm3233 Haha, that's true, it's funny because fast food places in other countries is so different than in the US. I heard that KFC in China is basically a gourmet restaurant.
      While I was born in the US, I did live overseas for a number of years. The country I was at when I went to the Burger Kid with the NeoGeo arcade machines was Saudi Arabia, I believe it was in Riyadh as well.
      They also had some side games which were not video games. Believe it or not, I even have video footage of the birthday, lol. I do remember there was another fast food place around called Wimpy's but I don't recall ever having seen it in the US. Geez, rewatching that makes me miss my 90's childhood.

    • @originalm3233
      @originalm3233 3 роки тому +1

      @@shahrouh Thanks for the reply, I knew it could not be in the USA. During the 1980s there were coin-ops everywhere and in very weird places (like doctors offices for example). However, by 1988 this had ended. There were never any coin-ops in Burger King or McDonalds and people rarely if ever had birthday parties there. That's how I knew it could not be in the usa. Thanks again for sharing your memories.

    • @shahrouh
      @shahrouh 3 роки тому

      @@originalm3233 That's pretty interesting. As I lived abroad largely, only snippets of me at a younger age were spent in the US. I do remember passing by a random burger joint with a Simpsons arcade game, but also never had seen arcade machines in Burger King, just play places. There are a couple of McDonald's which do have birthday party rooms but I don;t know how many birthdays actually occur there, though I have seen a couple. It's nice to remenisce about the 90's man, certainly better times than what we're living in now.

    Wild Ambition is actually how my sister and I started to find common ground, she is a Demon with Sendo, like when she was 9 and destroying my friends and I and had no problem doing her pretzel moves. I eventually got better with Geese and Terry, but a 9 year destroying a room of 15 year olds with Sendo is terrifying. She still plays fighting games, mostly SNK games even now 23 years later.

    Late or no ports is definitely the huge reason why SNK games failed to make a mark in the NA, while the likes of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat was able to leave an impact in that vacuum.
    If I could turn back time to make SNK games more well known and mainstream popular right from the very roots, I would take it.

    I've been playing video games since 1985 when I was 2, and I s*** you not, the first time I heard of Terry Bogard was when he was added to Smash. I've got vague recollection of SNK stages from the MUGEN PC boom in the late 90's/early aughts, but that's it. And I watched this from beginning to end. This is a credit to the interesting history of this SNK fighting series, but also to Matt McMuscles' fun and interesting docu-series style. Thank you for putting this together!

    I have my own little Fatal Fury Special for the SNES story.
    I saw it at Zellers upon its release for the not so fiscally convenient price of $97.99. Every so often as I revisited the store and saw the SNES library shrink, there sat Special. This went on for maybe 2 years or so as the then next gen consoles (N64, Playstation and even a few Saturn) games came out. The few remaining SNES games had all dropped in price but not Special.
    Then around my birthday in late 1997, I would once again visit Zellers and what did I see? Fatal Fury Special was the only SNES game left and it was now $27.99. Safe to say I grabbed it and have kept it in my collection to this day.
    Considering other SNK fighters such as Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting and World Heroes stopped receiving SNES ports, I felt this was a big deal.
    Bonus Mini Fatal Fury 3 story: The first time I played it was part of a double disc PC package that also came with Samurai Shodown 2. I think they were Neo-Geo ports and with Shodown 2 one of my all time favourite fighting games, I didn't play as much of Fatal Fury 3. I found it a step back from Special with the smaller roster and the slight gameplay tweak that wasn't necessarily bad, just something I felt wasn't broke with Special.

    I’m amazed that “First Contact” was my first SNK fighter. The system wasn’t even mine, I don’t remember who’s it was, and I sucked at it since I was like 7. I mainly played as Billy since I liked that he fought with a staff.

    Dammit. I... LOVE this channel. I LOVE your love for fighting games. My affection for Fatal Fury/Real Bout/Garou are rooted SOLELY in admiration of the character design and 2d visuals (didn’t appreciate the gameplay until VERY LATE), passion for all aspects of this series cannot be ignored. This was a WONDERFUL look into this series that I’ve always avoided in favor of SF, and is a fantastic companion to Sakurai’s Intro to Fatal Fury/KoF during Terry’s showcase for Smash. Thank you for all your hard work!

    This was an amazing telling of the Fatal Fury story. I unfortunately feel off after Fatal Fury 2 more because I never saw the game again anywhere in the Arcades except for FF3 in a rare Arcade on the boarder of a Arizona and Nevada Casino that my family rarely went to. But each time I did, I made sure to play a little of it. Fatal Fury holds a special place as it was the first fighting game that I ever played and really got me into the genre to begin with. I played a few other SNK games before even knowing about Street Fighter II to include Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and even World Heroes. I love your content and thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane.
