The game gets alot less repetitive if you're playing the sidekick. Every time you beat a boss you add that character to your selection list before every level, so you're constantly getting new characters to mess with while you run through the story
I replayed this as an adult and I couldn't play the game for more than an hour at a time. The levels are very long and repetitive. It only works as a co-op game.
What's the opposite of nostalgia? That's what this game is to me. I hated it as a kid when me and my sister beat it in a weekend over my uncle's place. I was also super disappointed that Mysterio was the final villain again (having played the much better Shattered Dimensions on my own). It just felt so lackluster. It's nice you can see the good in it though.
I grew up in a cult and I was allowed to play games for 30 minutes every day if I behaved and did my chores and did all my 'school work.' This was broken up once a month when the son of one of the other cult members would be allowed to come over and we would get to play a game for an hour together if my mom didn't hate us that day and make us do chores instead. We played this game and eventually beat it over a year. As such I have allot of good memories tied to this game in an otherwise very bleak childhood. The game is very mid to be sure, but it'll always be special to me

I played this couch co-op with my son way back when this came out and had a blast. It's very kid friendly and he was pretty young at the time. There's only been a handful of games that we played Co-op all the way through together in from start to finish , so this game really holds a special place in my heart.

Thanks for doing this review. When this game came out, I was looking for games I could play with my son that were not just for kids but that had a difficulty level and violence level that was not too much for a 6 and 1/2 year old. It was not easy to find games like that, but this game was perfect. It was a very bog-standard beat-em-up, but it was fun and had some charm. Just thinking of this game brings back happy memories.

Gotta agree with all your points honestly, still baffled about the whole carnage and electro dilemma on the PSP and even more so the fact that the game just straight up never released on PS3. That said, my only added thought onto what you said in your vid is a little emphasis on the character designs and the artwork associated with them. Next Level does fantastic work with cartoony visuals as you said, but the character designs in particular are some of the best done depictions of certain spider-man characters in my eyes. The rami stylings of certain characters I feel may have been a weird way to either market the game at the time, and it’s kinda a shame considering all the awesome other designs we got from new characters like scorpion, rhino, and even electro on the PSP. The helix things you collect that unlock the artwork are a little extra cherry on top in my eyes, and it kinda feels like the devs fully knew “yeah this is the best part of our game”. Fantastic video as always Matt, thanks for shining light on a mediocre game that still managed to get a few things right and imbed itself in many spider-fan’s memory! Man, this game is such a fun part off my childhood. I actually was never confused by the returning villains because I always figured this was just another universe. Oddly enough I never had that issue with media in general. If it looked different as a kid, it probably was a different story. That being said, I'm guessing this takes place in an AU where things played out differently and the villains weren't redeemed or killed, but New Goblin found out about his father and is working to try and stop his actions alongside Spidey. As for the designs, you can blame the concept of brand synergy, Transformers does it. The monotony of the game definitely is an issue when you're older. It would have helped to make the team choices be more significant as well as the interactions. A cool thing about doing the Arenas is you get them as multiplayer arenas. The game is great as a multiplayer versus game. The DS version is easily the best though. Unique levels with gimmicks, puzzles to break monotony, and overall more interesting boss fights. It does still have the same plot issue as the main game though.
The weirdest part about this game are the levels. You go through the most generic video game locations in this game like a desert, a spooky mansion, a snowy mountain, etc. Places that have nothing to do with Spider-Man. There isn't even a level set on the streets of NYC.
James Arnold Taylor did reprise his role as Spider-Man a couple of times, most notable for the 1st LEGO Marvel game. I think he’s an underrated voice for Spider-Man, feel like he should have voiced him for a Cartoon like Ultimate Spider-Man.
Man, I played this a lot when I was younger with my little brother. I really loved it at the time but I think that's just because the fun of co-op blinded me
I'll never forget how often I'd just stand around in the level with the boomerang enemies, just wait for them to whip their weapons around, and hit them with a web pellet so that they'd hurt one of the other enemies instead.
This game brings back so many memories. I rented it so much from my local Family Video all the time from 2011 to 2013. I played it with my sister a bunch of times, and played through the whole thing solo even more. Going back to play it a few years ago, it is definitely the most 5/10 game I've ever played, but the comedy definitely carries the game as some of the jokes honestly still land for me even as an adult.
Wow I remember I bought this game and stayed up almost all night to beat it just so I could return in the next day. Having Spider-Man 3 and this release after the gem that was Spider-Man 2 was rough.
Granted, this is digging into the deep recesses of my mind. But I owned the Wii version of FoF and I distinctly remember starting with both Prowler AND Silver Sable. I don’t think she was exclusive to just the Xbox and PC, or if she was then the Wii is included on that list.
This was one of the very first games I've ever played. Back then, I only loved Spidey, and the MCU was just getting started (I believe Incredible Hulk just released and Iron Man 2 was in development.) I was hooked immediately, and it was one of the key games that started my love for gaming.
I owned the DS version of FoF. Back when this game was first released, this was the version I bought, and I enjoyed it. Due to the hardware limitations, the levels were shorter - combined with the aforementioned break-up in gameplay - thus the combat didn't feel like a slogfest. I played the hell out of it, unlocking everything I could and I still have fond memories of it to this day.
Honestly for me the reason I like this game a lot, at least not until I discovered Marvel Ultimate Alliance, is that it offers you the opportunity to play as more Marvel characters you never see in video games especially when it comes to Marvel Villains aside from Venom who is playable in most Marvel games even back then name me another game where you can play as The Prowler, or Sandman, or even Doc Ock not many Marvel games gave you those characters to play as minus pay to play mobile games hell in this game you can take Lizard and have him and Spidey kick ass together instead of against each other granted the game hasn’t aged very well but this was still a cool game to play if you really wanted play as more characters from Spidey’s friends list or rouges gallery.

The Goblins and Otto had their designs recycled, but Venom looks a lot bulkier and more like his comics counterpart than the Eric Forman version from the movie.
Looking back, this game would have worked very well as a fighting game. Honestly I'm surprised we haven't gotten a Spider-Man fighting game yet. Though the idea of a 3D Spidey beat em up is a good idea but I think it would work well today since the Spider-Verse is now a thing.

Before Lego Marvel came out, this was the closest to a Lego Spider-Man game. Don't believe me? This game has the usual ingredients for a Lego game: simple combat, co-op play, lack of consequences for dying other than losing some money, a hub world where you select levels, etc.
LEGO games are much better lol. The puzzles and extra collectibles makes a basic formula more worth it. In Friend or Foe, it's mostly combat whereas LEGO Marvel had segments which could only be done by certain characters in free play so it made them feel useful out of combat
i can't remember where i got it from, but several years back, i had a demo for what looked like a Raimi Spiderman 1 for pc (i only say this because it was around the same time). it had completely different gameplay, when the official game was mostly rooftops and webs stretching out into the void of the sky, this one felt more like taking place in the streets, and you had designated target zones you had to aim the camera toward, and your web would latch onto what would be considered invisible objects just floating like 20 feet above the road. trying to find information, and i have no clue if or how it was released
Sad you left out that Doc Ock was played by none other than the late great Joe Alaskey. That's right, the one who voiced many Looney Tunes characters like Bugs, Daffy, and Yosemite Sam (even had the honor of taking over the latter from Mel Blanc himself in Roger Rabbit!). Also Next Level Games would immediately do another game with Activision right after, being Transformers Cybertron Adventures for Wii as a light-gun shooter. Thankfully NLG had the happiest of endings, being that after a long and prosperous relationship with Nintendo, finally put a ring on it in 2021 when Nintendo bought them out! Since then they've only put out Mario Strikers Battle League on Switch (directed by Devon Blanchet, a former lead from Propaganda Games on Turok and the canned Pirates game no less). I played the hell out of this game with my brother. I'm not surprised we didn't notice any issues it probably had back during its release but it was still fun to play villains in something outside of a fighting game

I don't remember that version of the game much, but mainly remember chilling with him and playing it! 😅😆 good times! Love the spider matt intro so much! That old cartoon spiderman theme was so badass! 😎👌🏻 good voice cast! David kaye, Jennifer Hale, john dimaggio, and James Arnold Taylor! Wow! I kinda have a softspot for this game. The intro is still fun to watch, I love that the game kind of contuines the idea of SPidey and movie golbin 2 being teammates, the enemy designs look cool and damn, specially with the concept art, I love the freakin art style. Also my younger brother and I loved to fight each other in arena mode... as long no one choose spidey or venom cause they where way too op XD

This one holds a special place in my heart for being the first real video game I ever owned. My parents bought me a PS2 and a copy of this for Christmas one year, I played it back to front. I actually just re-ordered a 360 copy on eBay a while back to replay it, but it might not work? Either way, yeah, I'll echo someone else's thoughts here, that the reason it uses Raimi designs for some of the characters is just because it's the versions people were familiar with in the public consciousness. Didn't bother me as a kid.
Oof. With 10 plus years of the MCU, the fact that Hasselhoff played Fury in a made-for-TV-movie in the 90's is a deep cut that I feel in the joints. As for the game, I wonder if they used the movie designs because they had the license for Spider-Man 4? But because the movie fell through, they had to use it or lose it?
Surprisingly enough is that the version of nick furry of this game also matches with the official artwork of The Punisher Arcade’s Nick Furry, as this would be the last game that ever brought back the OG appearance.
Carnage could only be unlocked through co op mode. You had to have a friend who also owned a copy of the game on psp to unlock him. I only got to experience playing him after downloading a 100% save off the internet back then. Thanks to whoever uploaded that

Got this one for 5$ bout 10yrs when our local video rental store finally closed and had a everything must go sale. Played it bout 20min and was done. Seeing it go for price it is is nuts to me but not surprising. Happy to have on shelf with the other spidey games in my collection at least.

I know it's the nostalgia talking but I loved the ps2 version(I'm still kinda sad I don't have a ps2 anymore and that the disc cracked). I just discovered that it was on psp, but I still own the ds version(2 actually cause I lost the first one, got a new one but my mom found the first one) and even though I like ps2 better, I do agree with your comparison. For my opinion, the ds version was kinda more challenging, at least for widdle me. But in my opinion the bosses on the ds were cool but felt boring to me even though the levels themselves were cool. The thing I liked about the ps2 version was the battle with the sidekicks, but it's also a downside cause you have to have your friend to play with you since there's no cpt. For it. And I don't know if it was a glitch or it's just how it was but in the I'll call it vs mode,black suited spider man's only attack was shooting webs. Where normal spiderman function like he always would.
This game was the coolest when i first found out about it as a kid. The amount of the characters (which some of them i saw first time in this game) was everything they needed to sell me on this. Even tho, this game is one of the first memories of being bored with videogame, earlier it wasn't a thing but here i actually felt that i don't enjoy it at some point, so yeah, even then it was clear that the game feels a little empty. Even tho i regret my cd with this game got damaged honestly i propably wouldn't ever return to it
_By staggering coincidence,_ I only revisited this game myself earlier this week. 😂 Frankly, I agree with you on a lot of things here - there's the core of a good game here, but it's marred by the so-so aspects, e.g. being tied to the movies, lack of spider-power opportunities, drawn out length, high repetition, no substantial extras, etc. I do like the art style, but something closer to the original _Marvel Ultimate Alliance_ would have been preferable. For me, *the actual combat* is the biggest bother. It's satisfying enough to kick butt, but I find you lose a lot of health without really knowing why and the red orbs are insanely rare, so dying feels unfair. Also, enemies knock you down a little too often and there's no way to counter them, so you just pray to the stun-lock gods, which is annoying. I also wish there were some combos more intricate than mashing Square. Again, _MUA,_ did this rather well and even gave us enemies you had to use them on to beat them. Tactics! As for the Friends and Foes, most of them feel useless. I mean *Airblade Harry* is just a reskin of his dad and both feel flimsy - same with some of the others. Out of the twelve, I liked *four:* Doc Ock, Iron Fist, Rhino and Blade. They've some good heft, all of them felt different to play, but you need to have them fully upgraded to stop them getting swatted down so easily. If I could conjure up a sequel (at least spiritually) to this game, I'd want something squarely centred around *the street-level heroes of Marvel.* Give us Spidey, Daredevil, Moon Knight, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and a few others (in teams we can choose) and put them in the middle of a turf war between the organised criminal factions of New York City. There'd be Kingpin, the Hand, the Maggia, all sorts of characters and story stuff to work with, a variety of NYC landmarks to base levels around, a variable buffet of goons to beat up, the whole ball of webs! Heck, even throw in some fun extras like a _Mortal Kombat_ "Test Your Might" thing that could be used to gain XP. So much more to add to that, but I'm running away with this a bit. Love this series; gets the old game design brain thinking! 😁
I got the game when it was new out for £15 or £20, and my brother and I played it, we loved it, though we are couch co-op bias. I don't remember getting bored, and I played as Spider-Man all the way, so my brother cycled through characters every mission
This game was only worth it to play in COOP and it was incredible fun to play with friends coming over, it was short enough that you could finish it in 3-4 sittings
I remember I rented this, I barely remember any of it, BUT I do remember doing the last level over and over because it was a easy 100% xbox achievements.
I love this game. And even though the game might be repetitive and boring, still it's cozy and quite entertaining. The one thing that this game did brilliantly is an atmosphere. You gotta admit, different locations have absolutely gorgeous environment surroundings that just nice to look at, love the places I get to be there. Not many Spidey games can show such beauty of locations.

James Arnold Taylor did reprise his role as Spider-Man a couple of times, most notable for the 1st LEGO Marvel game. I think he’s an underrated voice for Spider-Man, feel like he should have voiced him for a Cartoon like Ultimate Spider-Man.
But he did voice Harry in Spectacular Spider-Man and Obi-Wan in The Clone Wars.

I'll never forget how often I'd just stand around in the level with the boomerang enemies, just wait for them to whip their weapons around, and hit them with a web pellet so that they'd hurt one of the other enemies instead.
This game brings back so many memories. I rented it so much from my local Family Video all the time from 2011 to 2013. I played it with my sister a bunch of times, and played through the whole thing solo even more. Going back to play it a few years ago, it is definitely the most 5/10 game I've ever played, but the comedy definitely carries the game as some of the jokes honestly still land for me even as an adult.
Wow I remember I bought this game and stayed up almost all night to beat it just so I could return in the next day. Having Spider-Man 3 and this release after the gem that was Spider-Man 2 was rough.

The game has it's flaws but it will always be nostalgic for me as it let me bond/share some good moments with my 8 year old sister when i was a teen.
Granted, this is digging into the deep recesses of my mind. But I owned the Wii version of FoF and I distinctly remember starting with both Prowler AND Silver Sable. I don’t think she was exclusive to just the Xbox and PC, or if she was then the Wii is included on that list.

This was one of the very first games I've ever played. Back then, I only loved Spidey, and the MCU was just getting started (I believe Incredible Hulk just released and Iron Man 2 was in development.) I was hooked immediately, and it was one of the key games that started my love for gaming.
I owned the DS version of FoF. Back when this game was first released, this was the version I bought, and I enjoyed it. Due to the hardware limitations, the levels were shorter - combined with the aforementioned break-up in gameplay - thus the combat didn't feel like a slogfest. I played the hell out of it, unlocking everything I could and I still have fond memories of it to this day.
Honestly for me the reason I like this game a lot, at least not until I discovered Marvel Ultimate Alliance, is that it offers you the opportunity to play as more Marvel characters you never see in video games especially when it comes to Marvel Villains aside from Venom who is playable in most Marvel games even back then name me another game where you can play as The Prowler, or Sandman, or even Doc Ock not many Marvel games gave you those characters to play as minus pay to play mobile games hell in this game you can take Lizard and have him and Spidey kick ass together instead of against each other granted the game hasn’t aged very well but this was still a cool game to play if you really wanted play as more characters from Spidey’s friends list or rouges gallery.
I have it for PSP, can confirm the confusion for carnage, but still it was a cute time sink for 12 year old me, I have fond memories of it.

I mostly liked the game for it's multi fight game section. I remember me and younger sibling always playing it whenever we got the chance.
The Goblins and Otto had their designs recycled, but Venom looks a lot bulkier and more like his comics counterpart than the Eric Forman version from the movie.

Looking back, this game would have worked very well as a fighting game. Honestly I'm surprised we haven't gotten a Spider-Man fighting game yet. Though the idea of a 3D Spidey beat em up is a good idea but I think it would work well today since the Spider-Verse is now a thing.

I remember going to my friend's house to play Friend or Foe, and I saw the Official Movie Merchandise icon on it, and I asked my friend if there was a Friend or Foe movie. He said no, so I asked "Then why is this logo on the box art if it has nothing to do with any of the Spiderman movies?"

Before Lego Marvel came out, this was the closest to a Lego Spider-Man game.
Don't believe me? This game has the usual ingredients for a Lego game: simple combat, co-op play, lack of consequences for dying other than losing some money, a hub world where you select levels, etc.
LEGO games are much better lol. The puzzles and extra collectibles makes a basic formula more worth it. In Friend or Foe, it's mostly combat whereas LEGO Marvel had segments which could only be done by certain characters in free play so it made them feel useful out of combat
i can't remember where i got it from, but several years back, i had a demo for what looked like a Raimi Spiderman 1 for pc (i only say this because it was around the same time). it had completely different gameplay, when the official game was mostly rooftops and webs stretching out into the void of the sky, this one felt more like taking place in the streets, and you had designated target zones you had to aim the camera toward, and your web would latch onto what would be considered invisible objects just floating like 20 feet above the road. trying to find information, and i have no clue if or how it was released

Sad you left out that Doc Ock was played by none other than the late great Joe Alaskey. That's right, the one who voiced many Looney Tunes characters like Bugs, Daffy, and Yosemite Sam (even had the honor of taking over the latter from Mel Blanc himself in Roger Rabbit!).
Also Next Level Games would immediately do another game with Activision right after, being Transformers Cybertron Adventures for Wii as a light-gun shooter.
Thankfully NLG had the happiest of endings, being that after a long and prosperous relationship with Nintendo, finally put a ring on it in 2021 when Nintendo bought them out! Since then they've only put out Mario Strikers Battle League on Switch (directed by Devon Blanchet, a former lead from Propaganda Games on Turok and the canned Pirates game no less).

I don't remember that version of the game much, but mainly remember chilling with him and playing it! 😅😆 good times! Love the spider matt intro so much! That old cartoon spiderman theme was so badass! 😎👌🏻 good voice cast! David kaye, Jennifer Hale, john dimaggio, and James Arnold Taylor! Wow! I kinda have a softspot for this game. The intro is still fun to watch, I love that the game kind of contuines the idea of SPidey and movie golbin 2 being teammates, the enemy designs look cool and damn, specially with the concept art, I love the freakin art style.

This one holds a special place in my heart for being the first real video game I ever owned. My parents bought me a PS2 and a copy of this for Christmas one year, I played it back to front. I actually just re-ordered a 360 copy on eBay a while back to replay it, but it might not work? Either way, yeah, I'll echo someone else's thoughts here, that the reason it uses Raimi designs for some of the characters is just because it's the versions people were familiar with in the public consciousness. Didn't bother me as a kid.
Oof. With 10 plus years of the MCU, the fact that Hasselhoff played Fury in a made-for-TV-movie in the 90's is a deep cut that I feel in the joints.
As for the game, I wonder if they used the movie designs because they had the license for Spider-Man 4? But because the movie fell through, they had to use it or lose it?
Surprisingly enough is that the version of nick furry of this game also matches with the official artwork of The Punisher Arcade’s Nick Furry, as this would be the last game that ever brought back the OG appearance.

Carnage could only be unlocked through co op mode. You had to have a friend who also owned a copy of the game on psp to unlock him. I only got to experience playing him after downloading a 100% save off the internet back then. Thanks to whoever uploaded that

Not much of a detail but the black suit does a get a slight change to the ground pound attack: Normal spidey uses a web while black suit spidery uses two fists
Got this one for 5$ bout 10yrs when our local video rental store finally closed and had a everything must go sale. Played it bout 20min and was done. Seeing it go for price it is is nuts to me but not surprising. Happy to have on shelf with the other spidey games in my collection at least.
The DS version allows wall crawling but you’re taking a hella heavy drop in quality tho

For Marvel anything outside of comics & movies is usually hit or miss & it's usually a miss. Long comment sorry & going to get into some personal stuff but I found you're channel a few months ago & subscribed, but in 2018 I was hit by a car & in the hospital for a few weeks it broke vertebra in my neck, cracked my skull & de-gloved my scalp, cracked my right shoulder blade almost in half & broke my left leg & shattered my ankle so now I can't work or get out much so I get lonely & bored, had to move back in with my parents & we just have Direct TV & there's never anything on so now I just watch UA-cam on my Xbox & talking to my therapist, my medication, weed & you're videos help with my loneliness & boredom & I just wanted to say thank you for that
I know it's the nostalgia talking but I loved the ps2 version(I'm still kinda sad I don't have a ps2 anymore and that the disc cracked). I just discovered that it was on psp, but I still own the ds version(2 actually cause I lost the first one, got a new one but my mom found the first one) and even though I like ps2 better, I do agree with your comparison. For my opinion, the ds version was kinda more challenging, at least for widdle me. But in my opinion the bosses on the ds were cool but felt boring to me even though the levels themselves were cool. The thing I liked about the ps2 version was the battle with the sidekicks, but it's also a downside cause you have to have your friend to play with you since there's no cpt. For it. And I don't know if it was a glitch or it's just how it was but in the I'll call it vs mode,black suited spider man's only attack was shooting webs. Where normal spiderman function like he always would.
This game was the coolest when i first found out about it as a kid. The amount of the characters (which some of them i saw first time in this game) was everything they needed to sell me on this. Even tho, this game is one of the first memories of being bored with videogame, earlier it wasn't a thing but here i actually felt that i don't enjoy it at some point, so yeah, even then it was clear that the game feels a little empty. Even tho i regret my cd with this game got damaged honestly i propably wouldn't ever return to it

Frankly, I agree with you on a lot of things here - there's the core of a good game here, but it's marred by the so-so aspects, e.g. being tied to the movies, lack of spider-power opportunities, drawn out length, high repetition, no substantial extras, etc. I do like the art style, but something closer to the original _Marvel Ultimate Alliance_ would have been preferable.
For me, *the actual combat* is the biggest bother. It's satisfying enough to kick butt, but I find you lose a lot of health without really knowing why and the red orbs are insanely rare, so dying feels unfair. Also, enemies knock you down a little too often and there's no way to counter them, so you just pray to the stun-lock gods, which is annoying. I also wish there were some combos more intricate than mashing Square. Again, _MUA,_ did this rather well and even gave us enemies you had to use them on to beat them. Tactics!
As for the Friends and Foes, most of them feel useless. I mean *Airblade Harry* is just a reskin of his dad and both feel flimsy - same with some of the others. Out of the twelve, I liked *four:* Doc Ock, Iron Fist, Rhino and Blade. They've some good heft, all of them felt different to play, but you need to have them fully upgraded to stop them getting swatted down so easily.
If I could conjure up a sequel (at least spiritually) to this game, I'd want something squarely centred around *the street-level heroes of Marvel.* Give us Spidey, Daredevil, Moon Knight, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and a few others (in teams we can choose) and put them in the middle of a turf war between the organised criminal factions of New York City. There'd be Kingpin, the Hand, the Maggia, all sorts of characters and story stuff to work with, a variety of NYC landmarks to base levels around, a variable buffet of goons to beat up, the whole ball of webs!
Heck, even throw in some fun extras like a _Mortal Kombat_ "Test Your Might" thing that could be used to gain XP.
So much more to add to that, but I'm running away with this a bit. Love this series; gets the old game design brain thinking! 😁
I got the game when it was new out for £15 or £20, and my brother and I played it, we loved it, though we are couch co-op bias.
I don't remember getting bored, and I played as Spider-Man all the way, so my brother cycled through characters every mission

This game was only worth it to play in COOP and it was incredible fun to play with friends coming over, it was short enough that you could finish it in 3-4 sittings

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe will always be my favorite Spider-Man game. I grew up with it on the PS2 and it holds a special place in my heart.
I remember I rented this, I barely remember any of it, BUT I do remember doing the last level over and over because it was a easy 100% xbox achievements.
I love this game. And even though the game might be repetitive and boring, still it's cozy and quite entertaining. The one thing that this game did brilliantly is an atmosphere. You gotta admit, different locations have absolutely gorgeous environment surroundings that just nice to look at, love the places I get to be there. Not many Spidey games can show such beauty of locations.
