    My favorite thing about this movie is how 'Remember Me' is sung so many times, and each time with different context and meaning. To De La Cruz it is all about him, it's a fast paced song about his ego, but when we see the memory of Hector singing it to Coco, it's a slow melodic song about a father saying goodbye and then the ending with Miguel singing it, it takes a whole new meaning again, for a great grandmother to recall her father in her old age...it's simply beautiful, that the same song and lyrics can mean different things.

    • @ronweber1402

      Talking about Ernesto being all about his ego did you notice when Imelda was singing La Llorona and Ernesto joined in he changed to a higher key so Imelda couldn't sing along with him anymore because it was now out of her range? His narcissism knew no bounds.

We watched this for the first time together, and I couldn't help but cry my eyes out, but what she did was truly breathtaking for me. She held me in her arms and said she wanted to honour my mum on her ofrenda.
    Me and Maria are still going as strong as ever in our relationship. She is my whole universe and I am blessed every single day I get to wake beside her.

      music has been proved to help people with dementia and Alzheimer's to recall things. because hearing music helps them connect to memories related to those sounds, memories they can't recall normally because the usual pathway to that memory has been damaged by the dementia. its amazing.

      @@silvsevie I came to this video to post this. Music is very powerful for retrieving memories. I sing Barbershop and often Barbershop quartets go to nursing homes and perform, and when they do, sometimes a patient far into dementia will perk up and even start singing along or directing the quartet.
      Performing music, especially vocal music, may help defer and lessen dementia. It’s 1 of the few things we can do that uses both halves of the brain (analytical left side for the lyrics, creative right side for the music) working together in sync.

    My best friend of 25 years, Evi, lives in Guanajuato, the city Pixar used as their reference for the City of the Dead. It's referenced down to specific alleyways, like the one where Imelda first sings to Miguel.
    When my grandmother was still alive, she basically adopted Evi as an unofficial grandchild. Evi is a chocoholic, so my grandmother would send her a nice card and expensive box of chocolates for her birthday every year. This went on for six years until she passed away in 2005.
    After my grandmother passed away, Evi added her photo to her family's ofrenda. It's still there to this day, nearly 20 years later.
    Needless to say this movie holds a very special place in my heart. 💜

      @buscador2007 6 місяців тому

      @kriscynical Guanajuato city inspired the city of the Dead, the alleyway is el callejon del beso. I was born in the state of Guanajuato, Salamanca is almost as flat as a pancake, and it's just famous for the Pemex oil refinery. It's part of the Bajio region of Guanajuato, which is an agricultural and industrial area. It's not so inspiring for a Pixar movie.

    • @kriscynical
      @kriscynical 6 місяців тому +2

      @@buscador2007 Okay? Then I misunderstood which place she was referring to as far as Salamanca or the bigger Guanajuato when referring to "this is the place they referenced". Her house is in Salamanca but the government-run historical office she works with (she works on preservation of historical sites) and the university she teaches history at are in Guanajuato. My mistake. I changed it.
      She probably wasn't super specific about it because I'm in Dallas Texas. It would be like me specifying between Arlington, the smaller city _within_ the Dallas Metroplex where my home is, vs the overall Metroplex. She wouldn't know the differences up here any more than I know the differences down there.
      My main point was how much it meant to me that she put my grandmother's photo on her family's ofrenda because I was incredibly close to my grandmother and it touched me that Evi wanted her to be remembered. 🙁

    I guess you have missed that part... when Imelda sees Hector, she says "How many times must I turn you away?!"
    This means that Hector has tried to make amends with Imelda, whe she died and got to the land of the dead. But she wouldn't listen.
    Not only did Coco give back the piece of the photo, the moment she started talking about her dad, it means she was passing down stories, which was crucial for Hector's survival even if his photo could not be returned/restored. The photo only gave the right to pass the bridge.

    I'm latino and raised by my grandma. It's insanely common for the matriarch of the family to hold the family together. My grandmother was raised very poor,( and her grandmother had been a slave), and when she was very little her sister dropped her, and they couldn't afford the right doctors so her legs didn't heal right and she had a very large limp all her life. When she was about 6 years old, her mom (a seamstress/maid) was making a dress for her rich boss's daughter and she bought some scraps to also make my grandma one too. It was the "it" dress for girls that year, and my grandma was all happy limping around the house with it. The boss asked his daughter to bring her own dress to him, and then in front of my grandma and her mom he ripped his daughter's dress and said, "My daughter isn't going to dress like a servant's daughter". My grandma said that was when she decided her life wouldn't end there, being a maid. So she asked the village butcher to help her write a letter to the president of Brazil, and in it she asked if he could pay for her education, one day she would pay him back. And surprisingly enough, he did!
    She walked to the bus stop even little, took a long ride, walked miles and went to school every day. She spent all night memorizing the books to be in top of the class. And eventually she graduated, got her higher education, and opened up her own school for the needy and girls, and was the principal of a huge school in our town. (And she wrote the President a check, with interest!). She always said that though her body wasn't perfect, her mind was her one thing she had to even the odds.
    So when she was older, and got a diagnosis for Alzheimer's, it was heartbreaking for the family to see her slowly lose her memory. She passed away last year, hugging a doll she had, that she thought was her daughter, my mom. This movie hits me hard, because there would always be these random moments of clarity, where she'd ask what was going on, and we'd update her on how all her children grew up well, became successful, her grandchildren too, and she'd smile in relief and say, "I knew it would be worth it, people told me it was a waste of time, a girl going to college and working, but I knew I'd make it".

    Gotta give Pixar props for making a kids movie about literal death, but making it bright and hopeful.

    • @Holly_Grail
      @Holly_Grail 3 дні тому

      @@TheCombatWombat0 I think the props go to the Mexican people and Mexican culture! 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽 Día de los muertos in México is a very positive, happy and uplifting holiday in Mexico! We all go to the cemetery and spend the entire day there, put blankets like picnic, bring food, clean and put flowers and ofrendas in the tombstone, etc. there’s street musicians playing all over, you can hear music far and near, there’s a lot of vendors of street food all over. There’s hundreds of people everywhere. It’s basically a big party in the cemetery to honor and celebrate those who have passed on. It’s really the tradition of the Mexican people. Pixar and Disney just took notes on that. But of course, bravo to them for making such a beautifully enchanting movie 👏

    Coming from a family affected by WW2, the generational trauma in Encanto always hit a little closer to home for me, but Coco is an absolutely heart wrenching and beautiful movie. It's strange I don't connect to it more because here in Sweden we do have a day of the dead where you light a candle by your loved ones graves and remember them. It's not a tradition we followed much in my family though and I don't know how common it is in modern time, but it is a holiday right around the same time as Halloween.

My brother Miguel passed away on November 1st, (day of the dead) 2017 when he was 16 yrs old.. a few weeks later this movie came out and in a way it was like the universe was telling us everything would be alright. When Miguel sang remember me I cried like a baby 🥲

    What happens in the "Remember Me" song is a real phenomen that you can watch in on youtube.
    For some yet unknown reason some music that is important in a person's life that has dementia or alzeimer can sometimes be used to "bring them back" for a couple of minutes.

      It's something I've witnessed with my great grandma. My sister was singing their song to her, just weeks before she passed away, and for once in months, our great grandma squeezed her hand and looked at her with the same amount of love she used to, or even more so, like she recognized her again.

    11:40 gets me choked up too. Like, I imagine when someone actually passes away that’s a similar quote the family of their loved ones would say so they’re not scared to cross 🥹. My Grandma also had random bouts of Alzheimer’s…it was super rough. She told my aunt my Grandpa and her mom were there for her right before she passed. I watched this movie a short time after she passed and it had me sobbing. At the same time tho it gave me comfort that I’d see my loved ones again one day ❤️.

    This movie is more than special for me - my beloved grandma passed away 2 years ago and she suffered from severe Alzheimer's. We saw her mind deteriorate so rapidly and it was so hard for all of us. For me, this movie has another message (though not mentioned directly) - cherish every moment with your loved ones when you still have a chance, as long as they recognise you and remember who you are...

    I grew up in a very hispanic household, My maternal Mexican Grandmother's spirit guiding us as a true matriarch until the day we lost her. There are a number of references that, if you didn't grow up in Mexico or with a Mexican family, may go over your head. The "weaponized shoe" is the "chancla", the sandal that Mexican moms always threatened us kids to use to spank us with if we misbehaved. The masked wrestler with the silver mask is "El Santo" (the Saint), one of Mexico's original super heroes, the skeleton with the funny hat is "Cantinflas", one of Mexico's most beloved comedians and movie stars. Singers like Pedro Infante are also featured.

    • @avini7194

      There are many more references and symbolism than you mention. Some have to do with culture and popular characters like the ones you mention, others with pre-Hispanic symbolism, others with a specific worldview. The film itself is beautiful, but decoding each element requires a lot of information for those who are not culturally familiar with it.

    I saw this movie while I was in college in the campus movie theatre. When Miguel was playing the song to Mama Coco at the end of the move, you could hear a pin drop in that room. However, when she reaches over and pulls out the picture, someone in the theatre shouted "OH MY GOD ITS A PICTURE OF HIM". The whole theatre erupted in laughter. I think about that to this day anytime I see Coco. Funniest movie experience, you just had to be there.

When my grandparents were alive they used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos and my grandma told me that whenever she passes that she hopes someone would put up her picture and celebrate the holiday so we could remember her. After they both passed, this became the most important holiday for my family. Dia de los Muertos is not Mexican Halloween. It is a day to remember our loved ones who have passed to their next life and a way to have the whole family together and celebrate the life they lived in this world. As long as you keep their memory alive, no one is ever really gone.

    One thing about this movie is the way the surprises and twists recontextualize what we've already seen. The most obvious one is probably the song "Remember Me," which at the start is just Ernesto's most famous song, then takes on more meaning as we realize that the Land of the Dead is run on memory, so it must have more significance... but then at the end you find out that it was really for Coco, because her Papa had to be away from home sometimes and he just wanted her to know how much he loved her, and as you listen to the lyrics that had already played a few times throughout the movie, it's obvious that the real meaning of the song was there all along.
    But maybe my favorite is just before Miguel finds out that Hector is his great great grandfather, it's because Hector is feeling hopeless and the thing that he thinks of is Coco, the only thing he wanted to do was to go to her and tell her that her Papa was trying to go home to her. The only thing that mattered to him was getting back to Coco. And all of a sudden the disguise and all the other petty crimes and lies go from "I don't trust this guy" to "he was just trying to see Coco." I see that desperation and suddenly it's an admirable, fatherly love.

    One thing I've found cool for a while is the existence of "The Day of the Dead." I only learned more about it in particular recently, but it comes from an Aztec celebration. The reason I find that so cool? Japan has a celebration called "Obon." It's a few days that starts with a ritual calling our ancestors to come visit us, and ends with a ritual to send them back on their way. It came from a Chinese Buddhist tradition around 500 years ago. So, Japan/China and Mexico/the Aztec Empire each came up with a celebration based on the same basic concept, including the leaving food for them at the grave sites, independently of each other. Though, honestly, I would be unsurprised if I learned that many other areas had the same idea come up independently of either of them.

    The chanclas (slippers/sandals) are serious weapons of pain and humiliation, favored by angry mamas, tías, and abuelas the world over. Once the chanclas come off...it's over.
