Set Up a Cold Frame for Winter Sowing/Cool Weather Crop Seed Starting: An Alternative to Grow-Lights

  • A cold frame is a great alternative to starting seeds indoors and using grow-lights. Cold frames can be used to extend your growing season and to start your season sooner but they are outstanding when used as an outdoor seed starting station. Your cool weather crops like spinach, lettuce, cabbage, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, beets, kale, collards and more can be started outdoors in seed flats in the cold frames. The love and grow best in the cool weather. This is a basic set up that will also work for starting warm weather crops.

    Once you install the thermostatic opener you won’t have to worry about overheating. The wax inside starts to expand in the 55-60 range on most models. Live in zone 8A NTX where winters can be in the teens up to 80s and it’s great to not have to worry about my plants while I’m at work.

    I had a cold frame years ago and it worked great. It took about 5 years to finally give up and fall apart (which was more my fault than the unit). Because in Texas we can have all 4 seasons in the same day, I use the automatic opener. The trick is to have it closed or barely opened when it is windy. When I know the weather was going to be cold and cloudy for a couple days I but a couple milk container with water in the inside. I also but a sheet of black plastic on the ground under the plants.

    Last year I did your cold frame. I used for the transition between the house and the garden in early spring transplant process. This year I would try to cover some of my bed to see how long I prolong the season with cold frame. Last year I use during winter in NJ cover crop fleece and work for : kale, spinach, cilantro but the fleece suffer the weather and I want something with longer life.

    My sister in law just had there windows replaced and I was able to get the ones coming out. I’m excited to see how the giant radish and parsnips do in them! I’m using my potato boxes since they aren’t being used for potatoes so I can keep the boxes in production. I like the size of the one you made, I may try using some of the windows. It’s a mini greenhouse basically.

    Purchased the same cold frame this year. Love the automatic vent feature. Wasn’t sure if it would work. Happy to report it opens and closes based on temperature. Opened on sunny days and closed as the sun shifted. Trying to do more yearlong gardening in zone 7b. Very sturdy unit. Agree the directions were not the best. I see an opportunity for you to partner with them for the US market!

    I like the idea of saving indoor grow light space by starting in the cold frame. Question... If the cold frame is shut things inside don’t get natural moisture in the winter. How frequently do you need to hand water?

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому +2

      You shouldn't have to water much since the moisture isn't able to escape as fast as if it was in an open area, it will just cycle itself.
      It'll evaporate, condensate on the glass, then precipitate, running into the soil and the cycle will repeat.
      When you start to see things drying up, water it then. That's what I did ☺️
