You can get your indies a little closer together if you start every other one at your normal level. Cover everything with three inches of soil and plant in between the first ones at the second level and cover those. Now, you have every other one growing in a split level, so they aren't competing as much for space. It's not much, but it helps.

Im in Colorado Zone 5b at 6000 feet. I have had good luck putting the potatoes at soil level and then covering up with at least a foot of wood chips and other garden debris like leaves, old vines, etc. Year 1 I planted with seed potatoes in the spring and it was pretty good. Year 2 I planted with potatoes from year 1, half in the fall and half the next spring, and I couldn’t tell the difference and the yield was a little better than year 1. I’m in year 3 and I planted all this fall, again at solid level covered up with at least a foot of what is now nice compost from the previous wood chips and another few inches of debris. As I harvest in the fall, I’m also planting, so it saves me from the spring rush. We will see how planting 100% in the fall works. But I think I have so much insulation that I will be fine even though we get down to sub zero temps

Well I dont know. The greenery will get frosted out and die. So I dont think it will get you potatoes any sooner then planting in the spring. I have two questions How do you know which potatoes are indeterminate? I saw a video with someone growing sweet potatoes suspended by tooth picks to grow slips. Being a total rookie never planted potatoes I did this as a project with the children using red potatoes it looks like the, what I call eyes are growing roots. I was wondering if I just scratch the whole project with them or if I can plant anything? Sorry for the long question, they are so excited I hate for them to be disappointed but would rather not try to grow something for an entire season.
Sweet potatoes arent potatoes and they grow differently. It is hard to figure out determinate and indeterminate potatoes. You have to look up the names and see what you find. I gave up on it LOL. I am going by how fast they are ready to harvest. Just wondering if is possible to grow potatoes in the winter in Southern California? Please explain why are you doing this video when fall is almost over?
For me... to set the soil up for 4 months. Plus... our winters freeze so in March it is harder to get resources and fill the raised bed. I do it now. They bed warms quicker as it is raised, and I can just plant. I think you can do winter potatoes where you are. I am in Maryland. Coir comes on container ships burning diesel, so it really isn't all that sustainable. I live 300 miles from the source of my peat moss, so it's actually a much more sustainable choice for me. Homemade leaf mold would be best by that measure. Less than 1% of peat moss ever used has gone into gardens.
I know what you mean and I agree you have to consider carbon footprint and green verses sustainable and ecology at times. I would love real packaging that provides info on that. Plus Canada mines peat differently than how much of Europe wrecked their bogs. I finally go to point where I can make massive amounts of compost. And our County specializes in leaf molds. But I also know everyone has access to different resources... so I present options. Stays safe. Please check out my seed and garden shop. GARY PILARCHIK (THE RUSTED GARDEN) - do u recommend using the hydro perox spray on potato leaves to treat fungus disease?? Please let me know your opinion and also this topic could be a possible video you could do at some point if its a valid topic. Thanks!
In theory it would work. I haven't tried it yet for a video. But you would need to test spray your leaves and wait 48 hours and you test out the spray. Make sure you can a good mix.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN is 10-10-10 granular okay?
In my experience here in Australia, peat moss is not cheap at all! Difficult to find in a bulk bag also
Garden is global, love chatting with you all while we are in winter. Resources vary greatly. Compost is always perfect. Hope you have a great season.

Can you nearly bury your potato plants to increase yield?
What do I use to kill whatever is chewing my potato and squash leaves?
I haven't found minimal increase in harvest during the potatoes stem. The theory is right and some varieties do well with it. But the info is limited on which varieties do it. Insect dust is effective.

In zone 7B can I plant potatoes in grow bags now?
I'm also in 7b & would love the answer to this question
Me too
Well I dont know. The greenery will get frosted out and die. So I dont think it will get you potatoes any sooner then planting in the spring. Any places that doesnt get frost, can plant indeterminates whenever really. Maybe skip super hot months. I have some growing since August 1, going to let the frost kill them then harvest.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you Gary

Thank you Gary! My go to for gardening tips is calikim but she does not grow potatoes.
What are some named varieties of indeterminate potatoes?
You can google it. Best to check with cooperative extension service for best varieties for your state if in US.
Ill be making a video. But search google.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just Google red pontiac potatoes and it said it's a determinate plant not a indeterminate plant as you said it was. Is there different varieties of red Pontiacs that are indeterminate?
I'm in California zone 9... should I plant at the same time as you?
Same here Sacramento valley zone 9b, and I quite don’t understand why should be doing this now, when is almost winter.
So you can... but you can do much more in Winter too.

Stays safe.

Red Pontiac potatoes are determinate, not indeterminate.
Ugh... I have a list LOL. And an old brain. There will be a video with an accurate list. And I double check before ordering. Thanks.
