    Thank you so much. I have lost some cool weather plants but keep replanting, changing up conditions. We only just got into a bit of cooler weather here in SW Fl. Trying several greens, lettuces, brocolli along with garlic, tomatoes, ginger and turmeric. Keeping it small for now! Your channel is the best along with CaliKim!

    I need to start a compost pile and just let it be. I think I made it too complicated but it doesnt have to be😬

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +2

      So for sure. Just make it. Especially piles of shredded leaves. I worked on hot compost for a bit. I just dont have the time to manage it. So I do cold and what I like to call warm. Layer greens and browns. It heats fast, speeds up things but cools and then I toss it in a pile and let it sit.

    Like you, I will never stop learning. I like it that way. I think if we knew every thing, life would be boring and become meaningless. On next years list: find out where I can get manure locally. I think I'll call the county extension service first. I'm already saving cardboard, like you've used in your raised beds. Thank you for what you do for the gardening community.

    I moved to a 5 acre Farm almost 2 yrs ago. found out that there's a Cow Stock yard less than 3 miles from me so I went down and bought a Pick-up Truck Bed full of Cow Manure for $25.00 then we raised some meat chickens and I used Locally sourced wood chips as bedding for them now I'm mulching the chips and manure so I can use them in next yrs garden. Next spring I'm getting a couple pounds of red wrigglers and starting a my own worm farm so I can have the casting and tea. But it's been a learning curve with the change of climate from were we moved. Not to mention our last place really didn't have the space for a real garden and was in the Low Desert of So. Ca. Not fun to try to garden in 120 degree temps we did grow some stuff but mostly in grow tents indoors. Now we have so much more space to grow so much more of a variety. We're keeping it small and staring out gradually.

    Robbie, can I ask you a question about potatoes...
    People advice that you should grow potatoes in bags larger than 5 gallons.
    Do you get more potatoes in large bags?
    The large bag the more potatoes?
    Does it work this way?
    Some garden bloggers advice 30L containers. They say that it is an optimal bag size for growing potatoes...What do you think?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +1

      You will 'technically' get more and larger potatoes in larger bags but is also dependent on how many your grow and what kind of potato variety it is. A single determinate potato in 5 gallons might yield nice large potatoes. 3 determinate potatoes in a 5 gallon and youll get more baby potatoes.

    Another YOutuber who goes the more natural route without too much expense is "Grow It Yourself" by Mick Kelly. His soil and fertilizer videos explain how to do it without spending a fortune on amendments. He is based in Ireland .

    If you want to buy a bin to use it as a composter, should it has holes?
    I am considering buying a metal bin like the one in your video and it has holes all over.
    Does ANY container which you use as a composter need to have holes?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +1

      Yes they should have holes for sure.

    Gary, some people say that comfrey leaves speed up making compost.
    Is that true? If so, how exactly do you use them if you make a compost in a bin/container?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      It is but any nitrogen addition does that. The bacteria like it. So the multiply fast.
