Who is calling for socialism? Socialism is when workers own the means of production. In other words, employees democratically decide how to operate the places they work. A decent example would be the large and successful Mondragon Corporation in Spain.
If you're referring to people like Bernie Sanders, the furthest I've seen him go towards socialism is when he advocated for the same half-measure they have in Germany where 50% of the board of directors at a large corporation is required to consist of workers rather than investors. Basically, a compromise between full-blown socialism and capitalism.
If you're referring to Medicare for All as socialism, that's not really accurate. Single payer healthcare is simply state welfare. For example, every country in Europe and Scandinavia is capitalist, but they provide healthcare to all their citizens by allocating tax dollars to it rather than funding wars in the middle east and subsidizing oil companies. Medicare for All isn't a bad platform at all. 88% of Democrats support it, 46% of Republicans support it, and 68% of Independents support it. 69% of all registered voters support Medicare for All. The only reason Bernie went from winning every single state to losing to Biden was because CNN and MSNBC told older Democrat voters that only Biden can beat Trump. They weren't against Medicare for All (all the exit polls show the majority of democrats wanted it), but they were led to believe that Bernie could not beat Trump. Bernie led Trump among Independents (who make up 42% of voters compared to 28% dems and 28% republicans) by 18%. Bernie would have had all the democrats behind him in the general and a large majority of independents. This is why the state by state polls showed him winning handily against Trump. Bernie's platform was popular with most voters and plenty of available data supports this. He only lost because young people didn't vote and old people were afraid he couldn't beat Trump. He won the majority of people under 50 years old according to the exit polls. But people over 50 turned out in way higher numbers to usher in Biden.
Either that...or the computers fudged the votes. It is quite odd that Biden went from losing badly in early states, barely being able to fill a room while Bernie packed stadiums to suddenly winning like crazy. He didn't campaign in super Tuesday states for over a month until his Texas event the night before. He had barely any volunteers and donations while Bernie had 1 million volunteers and record-breaking donations...
Either way, Bernie's platform is popular with voters. If not for Trump derangement syndrome, he would have kept on winning every state. Thanks for reading my little essay here.

@@awesomeojoe123 CNN and MSNBC did the hit job on Bernie that they were tasked to do. He was barely covered early on and then after he won the first three with the popular vote the media blackout began. I know plenty of older people who supported Bernie and some who were dedicated volunteers too. But yeah, over all there was a brainwashing set up and it did make some people doubt their support of Sanders. I ran across two women one day and we talked a bit. One was definitely all out for Bernie and the other said that she liked him but was not sure if he was electable. (Jeez, right?) I said well he won't be electable if people don't vote for him! Where did they get that electability nonsense anyways? The media made good use of that phrase to put doubt into people's minds.
Do you remember when it was reported that Bernie dropped an F bomb? An article written about it was on my news feed near the top for at least a day and a half. That never happens with any articles. When certain networks put polling information up on the board they managed to manipulate it. Ex. If Warren was at 12% and Bernie was at 15% they would put her name above his, not in correct order of percentage as they usually do. More than once. I don't recall the reporting about how large his rallies were. In fact they underplayed it if they spoke about him at all. Very specifically. I have been to 3 Bernie rallies. The crowds were always huge filled with amazing people and energy. Some photos did surface from time to time, like the rally at Golden Gate Bridge. Just a sea of people. I don't know why the mainstream people could not believe their own eyes if they saw the photos. Oh I could go on and on but I will spare everyone. I do think that more younger people showed up to vote than is reported. I saw several pics of long lines at college campuses. People had classes, jobs, and could not always stand in line for hours. You probably already know this but there was a scarcity of polling locations in minority and also poorer neighborhoods. That made for very long lines. And people who opted out of that. My state was one of the last that had in person voting. Poll workers called in today they were not coming because of the virus. They had to scramble to get people but ultimately had to close down locations. There were polling places that remained locked because judges did not show up. Then people did not know where to go or how to get to an alternate location. No in person voting should have happened that last day, March 17. At the time I thought how can the DNC even think that this was a proper election? Half the states had not voted but Joe gets declared the "winner".
The votes were absolutely tampered with. How about that Pete? He put up fourty thousand for an app to be used to tally the votes. What normal person would think that acceptable? The Democrats did. Pete did ridiculously well at first and then he dropped like a rock when Biden became the guy. The exit polls were way beyond the margin of error, by as much as 12 points. That is a sure sign of fraud.
The media called him a socialist to conjure up the fear of the socialist Boogeyman out to take over the country. They would not call him a Democratic Socialist. Do painful to watch in real time. They stole our votes and they dismissed half the country as not being important enough to weigh in and vote. These people aljust don't matter. If you get to the end here thanks. Here is my essay.

@@veryskeptical2409 research, start with the Act of 1871. I started with that and followed the links. I may not be at the very top of the food chain but I am getting close. I will share the trail that I have followed and remember that no matter how unbelievable this seems, there is legal documentation to factually prove that what I am sharing is true. If you are like me you grew up believing that we are a free and independent nation based on the constitution. Which we were until the Act of 1871. Our nation was broke and took out a loan from England which in essence sold our nation back to England and established the City-State of Washington DC. This turned our government into a corporation controlled by the City-State of The Square Mile in London. Since The Square Mile is a permanent vassal of the City-State of The Vatican that means that our master is really The Vatican. But there is more. The Vatican was established by the banks and the banks were established by four families called The Ring of Power. Those four families are Rothschild, Oppenheimer, Warburg and Shiff. That is the skeleton of the Deep State, the dark forces that are controlling our world in secret. Of course that can be fleshed out with a lot of other details that they have created so that they can hide safely in plain sight. The key to their success is to hide everything they do. Their goal is to control us all and to make sure that everything we do, is profitable for them. So the key to freedom is to personally become as ungovernable as we dare and to throw a wrench in the works at every opportunity. Make sure that their protective walls of secrecy come tumbling down. Which is what I am doing by sharing this here. Stop fighting with your peers and lets all fight the evil powers that have enslaved our Sacred Earth.

But the authoritarian police-state in the USSR with Gulags, dissapearances, show trials, summary executions by police ect....
One can very well make the argument that the US wasnt morally superior (and I would) - but eqalling that to Stalins lists he never read but simply signed hundreds of thousands to death, his planful execution of genocide by food export ect...its really hard to find american atrocities that large and centrally planned.
racial lynchings are horrible, but they werent centrally orderd by the man in the white house and executed by the whole state apparatus.
The prison slavery system? Bad, bad, bad - but not really comparable to gulag with 30% death rates.

The way they use the “communist party” thing is sort of part of the subversion of language. Which has to do with how China has these groups that identify as “communist” but which are oligarchical or plutocratic. Noam Chomsky talked about the neoliberal or corporate media loves to mention that China is “communist” and that the USSR was “communist”. While although they identify as such they are not communists or socialists by definition.
But the use of the language in that way can likely work to prevent social democracy in the US which has a very nonrepresentational voting and election system. Through plurality vote and gamed primaries which select candidates through extreme minorities of around 15% or the electorate for the main elections.
So to many of the people in conservative talk radio and msnbc they’re always conflating socialism with fascism and communism with fascism and in some cases democratic republic with fascism. They use communism or socialism synonymously with fascism.
While the US and corporate interests will prop up fascistic leaders in other parts of the world as long as those leaders do what they want.

I think I heard you say the economy of the Russia Federation was the 'size of New York'. I have heard others say it is the size of Italy but people who say this kind of remark tend to be the kind in my experience who last went there in the year pre Putin era when the Russia economy was in dire straights. I do not beleive anyne who had lived there post 2010-15 woud have this view. It is now a very different place. Russia is the world's largest country in land mass and resources with a pop of 144 million. It's economy measured in PPP is the wolrd's 5th - but these measurements are based on the international dollar. With Russia you cannot do this comparison as the country produces almost everything it needs from ships, trains, rockets, planes, cars, down to bolts and screws (?does New York) and because of santions it now produces most of its own food and indeed has become one the world's principal grain exporters. Most of its national reserves incl. 2261 tonnes of of gold are held at home. It is a country almost entirely free of debt unlike the US whose debt is too large to manage. Russia economy has a fair way to go yet, but unlike the US it is not a country in decline. To compare it to New York is just stupid - perhaps you should revist the place

    • @mryhdy6266

There is a measure called purchasing power parity. Basically you figure the cost of things as a base for comparison, say a loaf of bread costs 3$ in the US and 50 cents in Russia, then you multiply Russia's economy by a factor of 6. By that measure they rank much higher.

I don’t think it is helpful to talk about historical atrocities in different countries and across time in such a linear fashion.
Yes, I probably would prefer to live in the USA compared to China at certain points in history. But the truth may also be vice versa as well. And on occasion I may very well prefer not to live in either country. There is a lot of blame to go around and if we’re going to tally up atrocities between the US and China, there is a lot to tally. Do not forget, that the history of America, supposedly, started from 1776. What about slavery, what about the history of the Americas during the British Empire, the French Empire, the Spanish empire, the Portuguese empire,,,
I live in the UK and I can tell you that there is a lot of denial about the British Empire over here and the role it had and still has in much of the malaise around the world particularly in the global south. But I certainly would not want to live in the US, not in the south and probably not in the north either, I am not white.
Yes, China has done many terrible things and continues to do so, but are you telling me that the great American empire is not similarly tarnished? How about the experiments that happened in Puerto Rico on the citizenry there in the 20th century? Or Hiroshima and Nagasaki? All the experimentation on black men by deliberately infecting them with syphilis?
Check out Professor Richard Wolf, he speaks eloquently and with authority on this nonsensical and ultimately pointless argument. How about the British in Kenya when they killed over 1 million canyons? how about the Belgians in Africa.
Yes I know, China: Chairman Mao, re-education camps, uyghurs, Tibet...
Yes, USSR: Stalin, gulags, repression, KGB... Have we forgotten that without the Soviet union, Hitler would not have been defeated?
Yes, USA: McCarthy, coups in Uran, Bolivia, Honduras, Venezuela; destabilising South America, Latin and Central America is; the only country to have a dropped the atom bomb, pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal...
Honestly, Guys, get a grip. There is a lot of blame to go around.
Look what the Indians are doing in Kashmir.
The Rohingya Muslims being raped and pillaged out of Burma...
How about the French involvement in the assassination of fromPresident Thomas Sankara, the founder of Burkina Faso...
The Cubans have sent doctors around the world to help with coronavirus, I don’t see the US doing that. No, the US is stealing ventilators from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados…
This is such a facile argument. There is a lot of blame to go around, Matt.

Excellent comment! I would only add that the U.S. has spearheaded the current holocaust against Middle Eastern Muslims (predominantly Arab, predominantly civilian) which really accelerated under Trump's three predecessors, resulting in the deaths of millions of human beings (1+ million Iraqis, mostly infants and toddlers, killed by Bill Clinton's draconian, potable water-denying sanctions, as reported in the Guardian; between 1.5 and over 2 million Iraqis killed as a result of Bush/Cheney's illegal 2003 invasion; and over 500,000 Syrians killed as a result of Obama's/the CIA's Operation Timber Sycamore, which flooded a nation at peace with a second Mujaheddin army, turning the country into another Iraq).
With links to my sources: invitation2artivism.com/minimizing-genocide/
I'm open to anything reasonable that UI's former guest has to say, but I find it absolutely reprehensible that someone from the country that has most picked up where the Third Reich left off -- by far, with no one else in serious contention -- would make comparisons of any other nation's leadership to the Nazis. Actually, I would posit that Russia is actually very powerful. Aside from a much more favorable balance of payments, they field some high quality weaponry while spending one-tenth what the US does. See how your "defense" budget could be cut when one's top priority is defending one's country and citizens? Russia has been invaded at least 3 times in the last century. The US, not so much. If we cut our war budget by 75%, we would be more than well defended while at the same time be depriving our leaders (and their corporate/financial masters) of their toys of war.

    • @Hippiekinkster
      @Hippiekinkster 4 роки тому

We can cut it by more than that. At $USD89million a pop, we ***need*** ZERO F-35s (obsolete. Drones can take them out). We do not NEED a military presence in over 150 countries. We do not NEED NATO to field a few stoned Dutch troops while the working class foots the bill. We do not NEED the Appalachian and Urban welfare program that is the current military (USAF possibly can be excluded from this characterization) We do not NEED carrier battle groups to project the power of the US Chamber of Commerce.
The idea that ANY country in the Eastern and Southern hemispheres is going to invade the US is psychotically ludicrous. Russian troops coming over the Bering Sea wouldn't make it out of Alaska. They'd all be stoned, sitting around their fires eating Moose sausages and drinking craft IPAs. The Chinese? Wouldn't get past South-Central LA. It's such a transparently BULLSHIT idea to anyone above the sub-clinical moron level, but it's conned the Cons into shoveling money to the MIC welfare system/trickle up wealth transfer.
Seriously, does anyone who is not a lobotomized Trump-rimmer actually believe the US military and the militarized Blueshirt SS exist to protect THEM? They exist as they are to protect PRIVATE PROPERTY. In fact, that is the primary function of the entire "public" State apparatus, to protect the process of labor expropriation/wealth concentration/power accumulation under Capitalism.

nothing hurts me more than the truths i already know are the truth and that i cant hide them from myself . its why i cry, what i already know is the pain that boils up, what others do might make me speak out the truth just to prove i could hurt myself more than they could, so i do, i tell myself the truth of my life and who i really am and thats the pain ill cry til the day i die, its good for you to not have that pain in you, i have it, nobody has to hurt me, im already hurt and it aint going away, there is nothing i can do to ever give it all away, most of it will stay and be buried with me, i dont have enough time to get it all out, i dont talk or type fast enough, most the time id rather just work, otherwise ill just keep repeatingg the truth and stay the same ,maybe others will find out who i am when i talk, i already knew . solving problems and helping people is the only relief, but the pain remains, forever ill cry everyday, so sue me.

Bernie Sanders withdrawal from the presidential campaign so early was the political betrayal of the 21st century. We'll never know what the next few months could have meant for Sanders’ electability. The effect of the economic collapse on a much larger percentage of the working class in US history, Biden's cognitive deterioration, record of supporting genocidal US wars, mass incarceration, Wall Street, NAFTA, and lack of support for universal health care in conjunction with working class anger at Trump’s corporate bailout at their expense, etc., were all reasons Sanders should have remained in the campaign. It was a surrender when victory was possible -and perhaps inevitable. YOU DON'T QUIT WHEN EVERYTHING IS IN AN UNPRECEDENTED STATE OF FLUX THAT FAVORS PROGRESSIVE POLICIES. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and Sanders blew it. It was a betrayal of his mantra, “Not me, us”. Sanders quit in service of HIS interests--not ours.

In international relations theory, one view is that a multipolar world is a less stable one because there's more possibility of miscalculation and conflict. Historically, there's a lot of evidence for it. It isn't just World War I, the pattern goes back even going back to ancient Greece. A bipolar world with all lesser powers falling under the security umbrella of one pole or the other is probably the most stable.

I'm on the pro-china (far) left
for me, it's more about the fact that they have, through deliberate planning of their economy, lifted 500,000,000 people from extreme poverty, completely captured the global labor force, captured global supply chains, and opened a geopolitical umbrella under which other countries can legitimately decide their own form of government and economy (their economic support for cuba, vietnam, infrastructure projects and real anti-poverty programs for various african countries, etc.)
and the actual government of china has pretty rigorously (and successfully) pursued a national program of anti-racism (which can clearly be seen in how extremely racist places they haven't controlled, like hong kong, are)
i feel negatively toward the russian government, but somewhat positively toward their foreign policy because they occasionally, coincidentally have geopolitical interests that align with the broader left project (syrian sovereignty, anti saudi arabia, support for iran as an independent state)
as a geopolitics and economics nerd, those are the two positions that i think are most coherent with the worldview of humanistic leftism/socialism/communism

Matt, have you been back to Russia since you lived in Moscow? I think your dismissal is based on the 90s. You should return for a visit because it is a different county and NOTHING like it is portrayed in western media and clueless politicians. The economy has become more diverse, corruption way down, certainly lower than the US, and in general, improves every month. Even with the sanctions trying to destroy it, it grows and keeps investing in infrastructure, the very good free medical system, streamlining government so it is easy to form a corporation, start a business, have a great free higher education, and most policies are aimed at improving the lives and opportunities for average people, particularly young families. I met you in passing years ago in the bad old days of the 90s on my frequently visited there an move to St Petersburg in 2000 from the San Francisco Bay Area...Southern Marin and have far more personal freedom, access to culture, and a very open friendly social atmosphere without all the anger an division that makes the US so nuts. There is so much more tolerant of differing opinions even media presents a far wider range of ideas and views that would ever be allowed in the US media. It will be a factor on the world stage for a long time due to wise policies, such as how it has almost eliminated foreign debt and personal debt is so low. Median family Net Worth is higher than the US because so many families own their homes free and clear of any debt, and that included Twentysomethings, who usually have no debt, a university degree(free), no medical expenses(free) and no mortgage(free and clear title). Think of what the US would be like if people owned their homes, had not medical debt, no college loans, virtually no homelessness, and far more influence on policy than non-wealthy Americans have. How much different would the US be if young families had up to 4 years of paid family leave and guaranteed month minimum paid vacations? The stress and panic would disappear in the US if they had what Russians have now. Russia has become the second most common destination for immigrants, 12 million in the last 10 years.

I think the problem with China is mainly one of size. When you attempt to govern for 1.6 billion people YOU WILL HAVE BROBDIGNAGIAN WARTS. Too many levels of civilization exist within their borders. I feel it is probably impossible for any central government to serve that many different peoples fairly at the same time. Almost any social or legal policy will fail in some locales within their borders. We are experiencing the same phenomenon within our borders. Just be aware that massive size and adequate human rights are possibly not compatible and the problem is not corruption so much as inability to simultaneously serve all those people.

Guys when you look at a countries character you need to look at it's past and its situation in the world. China has been knocked around by a lot of military states in the past like the Japanese, the British and the USA. After the Boxer rebellion they needed to haul themselves out of colonialist oppression and poverty. They have now done that and are seen as a threat by the previous colonial masters not because they are threatening anyone militarily but by their economic power. Note that while the USA criticised China for oppression of their own people they are not bombing or starving countries into economic subservience like the USA they are doing deals agreed to by both sides. China has successfully improved the economic well being of most of their people as the West has gone backwards in this area and has largely become controlled by corporations. Orwell would today see Big Brother in the West as Jeff Bezos and the CIA as the dogs from Animal Farm. I used to admire America in my youth but now pity its people for what they are now living through. The Age of the bleach drinking rich morons has crept up on you while you were sleeping and your corrupted political system and the PR teams for your competing oligarchs who call themselves CNN and Fox and MSNBC are feeding you magic mushrooms instead of a healthy diet of truth.
PS it is ironic that China is seen as oppressive by a country which has the largest gap between rich and poor and more people locked up in jail than China and particularly that the USA has now killed 20 million people through war since WWII and is itching to add to that tally in Syria, Iran and Venezuela. Finally China is a signatory to the Global warming agreements and is doing more than most Western countries in cleaning up their industrial pollution. The US which had not and my country Australia which signed but has tried to sabotage the agreement are among the worst offenders.
