----------Chomsky: Sanders not a Socialist, but a Decent & Honest New Dealer •Feb 12, 2016 ua-cam.com/video/Hjldfhk9DLE/v-deo.html Noam Chomsky advocates for Bernie Sanders, saying that of all the candidates his are the best policies for the country. He goes on to refer to Sanders as an sincere and honest "New Dealer".
His arguments have so much depth, historical context, backstory, wisdom, and just as importantly, compassion, honesty, altruism, fairness, and humanness, that even for those on the right who are diametrically opposed to his arguments will end up either agreeing or agreeing to disagree, as the foundation he builds for each of his arguments are virtually irrefutable.
I don't think it's scary to see Noam old and frail. It's very generous of him to stay connected and make contributions to current affairs in his last days. He's left a legacy of inspiration among multiple generations of free-thinking people. He doesn't owe us anything and should be free of guilt in disappearing from the world.
Chomsky really does know everything about the whole world. It’s fun to watch his old lectures, and listen to him taking questions. He would take four at a time, and the say, ‘okay, I’ll take the third one first, the last one second, etcetera. He really is so incredibly valuable. Chomsky called him a ‘new-dealer’, because that’s how he sees him. We didn’t get that socialist critique last time. It’s extremely frustrating. Thank you! His debate performance was less focused than I expected...he needed to behead Biden politically. It ended up looking like cat fight, and too congenial, even though he did smack Biden pretty good on entitlement cuts he was strongly for THROUGHOUT his tenure as a Senator...not just in the mid 1990s. Biden is a scoundrel, and Bernie should have used his own words from that balanced budget amendment ("I wanted to cut social security four times!!!!") To cut him deep. Anthony P. Ramirez ll Why would that be? Are you saying that you prefer the Liar-in-Chief, Trump? Since you will only have 2 choices, either Trump or Biden (highly likely at this point), then what will it be? Glenn Leahey I agree that Biden is sliiightly better than Trump. There is certainly value in that. However, this requires a cost/benefit analysis. By taking the short term improvement of Biden over Trump, what are we giving up? -The Democrats will forego all progressive policies because they know we will vote blue no matter who. Thus, we lose all the power, overnight, that took us 5 years to accumulate. -We are giving a green light to the global corporate hegemony that it’s okay to rape the planet, it’s okay to deny healthcare, it’s okay to PROFIT on the deaths of millions through war. -We will be surrendering all of the populist support from right, left, and center to the Republicans overnight, the same way we did by running/endorsing/voting for Hillary Clinton. -We will be sending a message to all young voters that there’s no reason to get involved in the electoral process, because even though their entire generation supported Sanders, none of his policies are worth talking about. In the long run? I submit to you that ramming Biden down our collective throat will kill electoral progressivism, severely hamstring the Democratic Party in the long run, and put Republicans in a strong position to win congressional and state races for the next decade. That, in concert with their judiciary takeover, will result in abortion prohibition, hostile immigration policies, trickledown hellscapes, refugee crises from climate change, etc. We need to think LONG TERM. Exit polls are showing that the majority of voters who are voting for Biden are overwhelmingly in support of Bernie’s policies. So if Biden becomes the Democratic Candidate here’s what we should do: 1. We form a voting Bloc, #TheBernieBloc 2. We formally let our demands be known to Biden and the DNC. A. We shall demand the immediate enactment of the Green New Deal, anything less will be disastrous for the planet and humanity. B. We shall demand that a single-payer health care system be proposed and presented to congress. C. We shall demand that the pharmaceutical industry provide prescription drugs at the same prices the rest of the world is paying for them. D. Fill in the blank, whatever the consensus demands are, we shall demand those. 3. We state clearly, loudly, and publicly that Biden must sign a document clearly adhering to our demands before the convention. 4. If he does not acquiesce to all our our demands in their entirety then we as a voting Bloc shall decide who we will vote for, making it abundantly clear that it will not be Joe Biden. Re The media and the discussion near the end: I am no Matt Taibbi, much less Noam Chomsky, but what I got out of it: Chomsky's critique of the media when he wrote Manufacturing Consent was that the info gathered by reporters was generally accurate (or, at least the journalists endeavored to be accurate), but the presentation of the information was often distorted by various underlying assumptions and premises by the editors, owners and the journalists themselves. ? ? ? It seems to me (and I'm sure Matt speaks to this with far more insight and eloquence) that now, 19 years after the 1996 Telecommunications Act was passed, the consolidation of major media by a small group of conglomerates has amplified this distortion; there are still journalists who strive to collect accurate information, but the underlying assumptions, the context and the framing in which this information is presented is more superficial and skewed than it was in the 1970s & 80s. Then there are the cable anchors, who seem shameless in their framing of the narrative, from the questions they ask candidates to the selection and/or emphasis of what is considered important and what is not - i.e what is 'newsworthy' and what is not - a natural progression from an increasingly profit driven system. Keep the eyeball numbers up and the advertisers happy. Hopefully that made some sense. Sadly, Trump has taken advantage of that; other DC players from both sides of the aisle seemed to have also joined or ramped up this game in the recent past, playing on inherent biases of certain outlets and anchors. That's the scary and tragic part about the media - you can state true facts in a way that builds a falsehood, through framing. Bernie's proposal to replace private insurance with Medicare For All was farmed solely as "BERNIE WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR INSURANCE!1!1!ONEONE", for example.
Chomsky doesn't like it when people kiss his ass, so this silly reverence people keep referencing is not appreciated. He wants people to respect him but not forego challenging him or coming up with their own ideas. He is the first to tell you that, in the sciences for example, the best ideas usually come from students. He also knows progress is never made by simply repeating what you heard someone else say. He had admitted to error numerous times over the years and been impressed by the work of others, even when it is not in complete agreement with his own. He does change his mind. He also is opposed to the idea of icons, heroes, and gods. He will give his time but don't frustrate him by kissing his ass.

Fellow Bernie Supporters,
Mike Figueredo and others make the argument that we the Bernie Supporters have leverage as dissenting voices within the Democratic Party regardless of who the nominee is. ua-cam.com/video/KlVtIKwM-KM/v-deo.html
Krystal Ball too has repeated that candidates have to earn our vote. Both Krystal and Mike make excellent points, however, they stop short of taking the next logical step. That is, we the Bernie supporters can and should form a voting Bloc. We must unionize. If basically half of the democratic party stands united we have immense power, to their points.
The democratic primary is not yet over. Exit polls are showing that the majority of voters who are voting for Biden are overwhelmingly in support of Bernie’s policies. So if Biden becomes the Democratic Candidate here’s what we should do:
1. We form a voting Bloc, #TheBernieBloc
Please share this idea with your friends/listeners. This is the power we have. Time is of the essence.

Moderator: So Yanis, you’re a very interesting combination of idealism and pragmatism. You identified the problem we have here which led to somehow Trump being elected. Yet that terrible income inequality which has gotten way worse, in the last 12 months…did not produce enough people to elect Bernie Sanders; and I went to his rallies, and he said great things - do you think that this country just can’t wrap its head around that word ‘socialist’? and that’s my question - is - does it have to repackage the thinking?
Yanis Varoufakis: Well, I used to think that, until Bernie Sanders called himself a socialist and won the primary election before it was stolen from him. Bernie Sanders won the election, or he would have won the election if the National Democratic Committee did not do its utmost to perform a coup d’etat against him. And I’m stating this as an accusation.

Because of the type of work I do and the places I do it, I will have ZERO income for at least two months. And as a private contractor, I have no access to unemployment (in my state, some states have such.) I had to visit the ER right before this hit, and I'm already receiving collection calls. My car had a major break down at speed on the freeway last month to the tune of a $1200 repair. And both my auto and house insurance payments are due at the beginning of April. 😂
i am terrified of bringing home this virus to my extremely medically fragile 80 yr old mother, so I am going out in public only to go to the pharmacy and grocery store as little as humanly possible. If I bring this home to her, she will absolutely die. Even when I had my income - working seven days a week - we were living on very, very little money between her SS and my work (my work that at least gave me the freedom to only be away from home a few hours at a time so I could be her *only* caretaker through dozens of surgeries, hospitalizations, illnesses 24/7 for the past 15 years).
I don't know what's going to happen to us. I really don't. But I am acutely aware, having some small savings, that we are not in as absolutely dire straights as millions upon millions of other Americans. So you enjoy your time working from home, Matt. While you get fat, I . . .won't be.
I have lost all hope in the political process, our institutions, and this country. I have come to hope I take after my father's side of the family. I just have to stick around long enough to care for my mother through the agonizing end of her life. If there is a God, I'll then get a quick and dirty cancer that will free me of this grotesque world. My dad died at 55 yrs old after fighting with every ounce of stregnth he had a vicious cancer, not for the three months of his prognosis, but for a two full hellish years. Looking around, I can only think, " I should be so lucky." Only a few years to go. 🤞
Well, I'd say that was cathartic. But it wasn't.
P.S, all the prog pundits are have a merry old time hitting Sanders for his failures. TPTB were NEVER going to let him win/live long enough to win. Keep believing Sanders could have done better playing things any other way than he did. If change can ever be made it will be when the under 45 yr olds are in a position to pry power from the cold, dead, plague-ridden hands of the neolibs/neocons of both parties. I hope there is something left to be rebuilt, and I wish the youngins all the luck. Thanks, Pat. Now I have an earworm. Can't get Pink Floyd's 'On The Turning Away' out of my head.
Ex-CEO of CBS Les Moonves on Trump, Feb., 2016: "It may not be good for America, but it's damn good for CBS."

Interview with Noam Chomsky - Is Obama Progressive? •Jan 31, 2013 ua-cam.com/video/Oan8te8Q_Bs/v-deo.html
@@sandrawalker8839 Chomsky was ahead of the pack in passing judgement on Obama. It took me well into his 2nd term to realize what dupes we were.
You would have thought Bernie would have consulted Chomsky a long time ago.
the GoP in '04 turned John Kerry into a coward, when in fact he was taht rare thing , a Viet Nam hero, & twice - in defensive rescue action (of his fellow US invaders) then, in informed protest, with the whole country watching.
and they hdi teh plain fact that Kerry's opponent had indeed been a coward, and, twice - by neither showing up for duty, nor protesting teh fact that others were in harm's way, that might have been, his.
Yep. I worked that election, and it was the last time I had anything to do with politics. It's a lost cause, the problem being no-one (us, we) is organizing the alternatives.
I too will take the "Menaker Pledge" to never vote for Joe Biden under any circumstances.
Hey Matt, cool drums. We should start a band.
(I mean after the Plague)
"AFTER THE PLAGUE"..Great name for a band Steven ☺💯💣
"You have to face people where they are, not where you think where they ought to be"- Chomsky's brilliant as always. That's one of main reasons why the left wing parties are failing around the world (when I say 'the left' I do not mean identity politics liberal parties who, like right wing parties, but from the opposite side, just use identity questions to manipulate their voting base, but when it comes to social economic issues they are deeply neoliberal, just like right wing parties). Most of the left wing parties and intellectuals are disconnected from the average population and too much focused on how they think the world should be, but not with what the world is currently.
nailed it. true left needs to step up their game because there is a dual front assault by fascism wearing two masks
Thank you for another great show. I save them for my Sunday morning work out. I look forward to it every week:)
Thank you SO much Katie and Matt for this … and forever grateful Naom Chomsky. Thank you so much.
Why didn't he advise Bernie...? He knows him, why only say that now when it's too late? :(
Honestly, Sanders should've won this easily. Yes, I know you had the Democrat establishment and media against you, but so did Trump. Instead of taking on the Democrat Party and its corruption, he tried this balancing act of unity, while trying to fundamentally change the system. Sanders "fight" was disappointing and will look back at this was the biggest mis-opportunity in US History.
"Yes, I know you had the Democrat establishment and media against you, but so did Trump. " You forgot to mention having the pandemic against you.
@@IMSiegfried Bernie lost before the pandemic. Trump will win again. Sad.
I don't really think there's going to be a lot of 'looking back.'
Joe D please bernie sanders had rallies of 25000 etc and the media never ever ever covered it. With trump he had wall to wall media coverage. We even saw microphones waiting for trump to come to the podium covering every speech he made. Bernie never got that he was shunned. The awesome power of the 1 percenters owned corporate media has everything to do with it.
Bernie didn't stand a chance in a country with no election security, targeted voter suppression and this hostile party "counting" the votes.
This man is on a whole different level! unflamboyant courage!
Why the hell isn't the government sending out pamplets describing symptoms of the coronavires so we know what to look out for.
Some things ya just can't make up! I got in on the middle of Palin singing-I thought it was a Tina Fey (?) comedy skit! LOL!
"IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ADJUSTMENTS" that should go on a t-shirt!
gptta be fat to wear to wear it
@@65minimom jesus....
Who is going to be the first person killed for aiming a "thermometer" gun at someone and being mistaken for a real gun?
Bernie needs to stay in and wait till JoeMentia Crumbles.
Why have we NOT figured out to let our elders go to the head of the line? (In general, nothing to do with this terrible Coronavirus-Biden situation.)
The fact that Katie thinks "Baby Got Back" advances "body positivity" is ironically funny in multiple ways. Women really do not understand male desire, at all.
This comment is much too insightful and on the nose for the world to understand today. And its the same idea behind people saying the Jennifer Lopez/Cardi B stripper movie promotes "women empowerment/equality"..
i love that song but its mostly meant as a joke, no clue about her bizarre comments about the identity politics of such a silly song
Matt "I play electric drums" Taibbi
..and Tulsi endorses him and asks us to believe her BS
Not politically correct to suggest this might be divine justice, maybe nature's way of saying "Enough!"
I am very humbled that we have Chomsky, always learn new stuff from him.
I few years ago I felt compelled to send a fan email to Noam Chomsky after hearing some of his talks. Now I remember why. Good to see he is still in form. (And the beard looks good on him.) I was quite pleased when Prof. Chomsky immediately responded to my email; pleased but not surprised. He has a reputation for actually answering his mail. I hated to waste his time and yet it was gratifying to receive such a nice response.
That's how to interview Noam Chomsky: ask him a few questions and let him rip!
