This band is from Finland. Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer. Marco is (was - he resigned just recently) playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this. Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song. Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums. Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well. Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013. It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
Wacken is "the world's most famous potato field". It's kinda wild what "our" little regional music festival has become. (Also they still start each year with the local fire department orchestra, which is just soo cool).

In the Netherlands we have such a good singers and metal bands like Epica ( singer Simone Simons) and Within Temptation (singer Sharon den Adel). Tip for the next? Her husband is named Hannes Van Dahl and is the drummer for the Swedish band Sabaton, who are known for their epic, heroic tales of battles. (his drums are set up in a mock tank) As others have posted before, Floor is one of the most down to earth people you'd ever want to meet. Like everyone, I'm sure she can have a mood, but in every interview, and on every show I've seen, she's acted like an absolute sweetheart. Then she goes on stage and a switch flips.

The keyboarder Toumas writes pretty much all their music and lyrics. Their songs Dead Boy’s Poem and Poet and the Pendulum have some of the best and emotive lyrics as they are deeply personal to him

This entire Wacken (pron: VAW-Kehn) show is a masterpiece of live recording and performance! That's why we suggest you check out many or all songs from that concert. The other reason is that singer, Floor had only been w the band under a year and was performing songs that were all written for prior female singers...they are older songs that wouldn't be on future set lists, and Floor made them all her own! Singing with her is bassist Marko Hietala...a fantastic vocalist in his own right!
Try Dark Chest of Wonders. It’s the show opener at the Wacken 13 show you’ve seen a couple videos from already. It’s the first time many in the 82k there got to see Floor as the lead singer in NW. Best show opener you’ll hear. Listen to the audience the first time Floor walks out on stage.

The band is from Finland. Floor is Dutch. Living in Sweden with her swedish husband Hannes Van Dal. He's the drummer of another fun band called Sabaton. This year I'm seeing them both Live. Hannes with Sabaton now in April (Touring with BABYMETAL, another band you should check out), Floor in June in what seems to be their last Live show for a few years at least. They announced a hiatus after this tour, and the show in Oslo, Norway, June 22 is the last one. Even us Norwegians know the term "Dutch Oven". It was 82K on this show. It's a fact. In the show opener video this is stated. Biggest show I've ever been to was Rammstein at Bjerke, Oslo, Norway. 60.000 tickets sold. Crazy. Edit. Floor and Hannes has one girl, Freja, and she's pregnant with no2 right now.
Floor is a shade over 6'. Her husband, Hannes van Dahl, the drummer for Sabaton, is 6'4". They have a daughter, Freja, who they so far prefer not to have photographed. The band is currently touring the Far East while Floor is pregnant.

It's a shame they aren't a household name in the US. She's one of the greatest female singers I have heard of the last couple decades, and easily destroys anyone over here. One of my favorite bands, especially for live performances (the other being Lovebites). Just unbelievable. Every song you hear from them, you'll be amazed. Note: Floor is Dutch, but this is a Finnish metal band. Floor is the third singer for the band. If you keep checking out more Nightwish, you'll possibly come across Tarja and Annette - impressive in their own rights - but all hail Floor!
Didn't notice anyone mentioning the multi instrument player Troy, who is English, from the north western coast. You'll get to know his talents too if you continue riding this train. Apart from him and Floor all the other members are Finnish.
Nightwish has had 3 lead singers. Their first one Tarja (Tar-yuh) is a professionally trained opera singer and was the foundation their sound was built around. You guys should really see Nightwish's rendition of Phantom of the Opera live.

Nightwish is always without auto-tune: a band, a singer and go! When they are directing the recordings themselves, like here, there is afterwards mixing and cleaning up (like the constant roar of plus 80.000 people), but nothing fake. BTW Floor and bearded bass player Marko know each other from their mutual interest: axe fighting! 🤭

Floor is classically trained and can sing Opera arias. She also trained in Music Theater and Rock Academy in the Netherlands. She stared singing in her first band, After Forever, around 14 I think. You find a lot of singers in Metal (in Europe) who are classically trained and that helps with breath control, projection, et. al.
You hit on how good Floor sounds live; There is a TV show Called Beste Zangers (Best Singers in Dutch). The whole idea is that the entire cast of the show is nothing but the top professional singers in the whole country, and they have numerous performances throughout. I have seen a UA-cam video analyzing the audio from those performances and it is crazy. Pretty much everyone else when looking at their pitch has clear evidence of software adjusting their pitch so that it snaps to the exact note, but not Floor. She naturally nails the notes with the tiny variations that are practically unavoidable and unnoticeable to the human ear, showing that this is not corrected, but simply her natural performance. She is truly a unique talent who has put in INSANE levels of dedicated practice to master her craft.
"Ole-ole-ole-ole-o" ... dudes, you might wanna put that in the back of your head when you do "I Want my Tears Back" from Buenos Aries, 2019... jus sayin. Ditch the Wakken version. So, on why they sound so good : a) all the backing tracks run about half of the symphonic/brass/choir (the rest is played by Tuomas via sampled stuff) AND that is brought in via Protools which also triggers the lights/pyro, video boards. b) there is a lot of arrangement here that "makes room" for the vocal frequencies (generaly 100-80 Hz, tho Floor pushes the top end) The bass is in the clear, but the keys are generally all higher freq stuff, and the guitar sound is very mid-scooped (playing mainly low notes, with lots of 3rd/4th/5th harmonic distortion. That leave tonnes of space for the vocals to punch trough without competition. c) instruments wouldn't dare get in the way of Floor's vocals... Valkyries just wail right over that sh!t without any effort at all. Floors Dutch, the band is Finnish, her husband is a Swede drummer (for Sabaton) and their expecting their second and she is STILL out on tour. Flippin Goddess Especiale. ... not sure how that translates into Dutch.

If you like symphonic rock/metal and Floor as a Dutch artist, you could also check out Ayreon “the day that the world breaks down” and after that the live version of “everybody dies”. Ayreon is a project of the Dutch artist Arjan Lucassen who writes rock/metal operas where a whole album is a story. Every voice on it is a character in the story and in “the day that the world breaks down” there are 11 (!!!!!!!!!) main singers. The singers are leadsingers of well known metalbands. You will hear Floor also on it 😉. Oh and he is 6 foot 6……..
She is married to Sabaton's drummer (Hannis Van Dahl). They have a daughter and just announced they have their second child on the way. Also she just went through (last year) and is a breast cancer survivor. She dealt with that last spring/summer and was back performing in November.

just an FYI, Nightwish is always best live and if you listen to the studio version of this song you will be hearing a different singer. Floor is the 3rd vocalist they have had and she was not with the band when this song came out.
Good one. Floors husband is taller than her and he is a drummer with the Band Sabaton. Try Ghost River, Song Of Myself, Nemo, Last Ride Of The Day etc. or any other same show. Floor became an official member of the band a few months after this show she had taken over mid tour when the other singer dropped out. Wacken was her introduction to the European fans as the new singer.

As an American I concur. Haven't actively listened to American music in 20 years. NW brought hope and joy for music once again in my life.

This entire Wacken (pron: VAW-Kehn) show is a masterpiece of live recording and performance! That's why we suggest you check out many or all songs from that concert. The other reason is that singer, Floor had only been w the band under a year and was performing songs that were all written for prior female singers...they are older songs that wouldn't be on future set lists, and Floor made them all her own!
Singing with her is bassist Marko Hietala...a fantastic vocalist in his own right!

Yo, BP. I'm Canadian, not Dutch, but a dutch oven is an (usually) cast iron pot with a tight-fitting lid. Pretty sure that's where the term you were talking about comes from. Tight lid, cooking. I can't believe I put this much thought into such a throw away joke.
The band is from Finland. Floor is Dutch. Living in Sweden with her swedish husband Hannes Van Dal. He's the drummer of another fun band called Sabaton. This year I'm seeing them both Live. Hannes with Sabaton now in April (Touring with BABYMETAL, another band you should check out), Floor in June in what seems to be their last Live show for a few years at least. They announced a hiatus after this tour, and the show in Oslo, Norway, June 22 is the last one.

Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.

Floor can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls.
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bullwhip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.

It's a shame they aren't a household name in the US. She's one of the greatest female singers I have heard of the last couple decades, and easily destroys anyone over here. One of my favorite bands, especially for live performances (the other being Lovebites). Just unbelievable. Every song you hear from them, you'll be amazed. Note: Floor is Dutch, but this is a Finnish metal band. Floor is the third singer for the band. If you keep checking out more Nightwish, you'll possibly come across Tarja and Annette - impressive in their own rights - but all hail Floor!

Nightwish is always without auto-tune: a band, a singer and go! When they are directing the recordings themselves, like here, there is afterwards mixing and cleaning up (like the constant roar of plus 80.000 people), but nothing fake. BTW Floor and bearded bass player Marko know each other from their mutual interest: axe fighting! 🤭

Floor is classically trained and can sing Opera arias. She also trained in Music Theater and Rock Academy in the Netherlands. She stared singing in her first band, After Forever, around 14 I think. You find a lot of singers in Metal (in Europe) who are classically trained and that helps with breath control, projection, et. al.

You hit on how good Floor sounds live; There is a TV show Called Beste Zangers (Best Singers in Dutch). The whole idea is that the entire cast of the show is nothing but the top professional singers in the whole country, and they have numerous performances throughout. I have seen a UA-cam video analyzing the audio from those performances and it is crazy. Pretty much everyone else when looking at their pitch has clear evidence of software adjusting their pitch so that it snaps to the exact note, but not Floor. She naturally nails the notes with the tiny variations that are practically unavoidable and unnoticeable to the human ear, showing that this is not corrected, but simply her natural performance. She is truly a unique talent who has put in INSANE levels of dedicated practice to master her craft.
"Ole-ole-ole-ole-o" ... dudes, you might wanna put that in the back of your head when you do "I Want my Tears Back" from Buenos Aries, 2019... jus sayin. Ditch the Wakken version.
So, on why they sound so good :
a) all the backing tracks run about half of the symphonic/brass/choir (the rest is played by Tuomas via sampled stuff) AND that is brought in via Protools which also triggers the lights/pyro, video boards.
b) there is a lot of arrangement here that "makes room" for the vocal frequencies (generaly 100-80 Hz, tho Floor pushes the top end)
The bass is in the clear, but the keys are generally all higher freq stuff, and the guitar sound is very mid-scooped (playing mainly low notes, with lots of 3rd/4th/5th harmonic distortion.
That leave tonnes of space for the vocals to punch trough without competition.
c) instruments wouldn't dare get in the way of Floor's vocals... Valkyries just wail right over that sh!t without any effort at all.
Floors Dutch, the band is Finnish, her husband is a Swede drummer (for Sabaton) and their expecting their second and she is STILL out on tour.

If you like symphonic rock/metal and Floor as a Dutch artist, you could also check out Ayreon “the day that the world breaks down” and after that the live version of “everybody dies”. Ayreon is a project of the Dutch artist Arjan Lucassen who writes rock/metal operas where a whole album is a story. Every voice on it is a character in the story and in “the day that the world breaks down” there are 11 (!!!!!!!!!) main singers. The singers are leadsingers of well known metalbands. You will hear Floor also on it 😉. Oh and he is 6 foot 6……..

Floor became an official member of the band a few months after this show she had taken over mid tour when the other singer dropped out. Wacken was her introduction to the European fans as the new singer.

It is called a Dutch oven after an English industrialist discovered a pot in The Netherlands made for cooking which was cast from sand molds.
