This song, when James originally wrote it, was about losing a child to SIDS, but it eventually evolved into just trying to protect your child from the inevitable evils of the world, some of which are closer than you think. Another fun fact, the child’s voice you hear in the bridge is James’ sons voice!

    • @libertybell8852

I lost a child to SIDS 15 years ago, and this song, among a few others, really spoke to me during that time. They still do. Godspeed by Dixie Chicks also was one that could make me cry, but also brought me peace.. dozens of them really, but that one captured my Mom grief. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Ever.

You are right about the song was going to be about but James was unmarried with 0 children when this album came out . Caster Hetfield was born in the early 2000's .

'blurpledragon2779' is correct. At the time "Enter Sandman" was recorded in June of 1991, James Hetfield was unmarried with no children. So, that was the voice of somebody else's son. James' only son Castor Virgil wasn't born until May of 2000.😊

Fun fact: Still, to this day, as listed in The Guinness Book of World Records, Metallica is the only band to ever play on all 7 continents. And they did it within a one year period. The choppers were not to keep people in line. They were moving air down into the crowd because they were so tightly grouped together.

Correction, the concert was not "celebrating the fall of the Soviet Union." It was smack dab in the middle of the fall of the USSR being held in September of 1991, just a month after a military coup attempted to take control of the USSR and some of their former states had declared independence (Ukraine, Belarus and others). The USSR actually fell in December 1991.

A USSR flag is the probably the last flag you'd see at this show. This was the first major concert in Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union, so also a sort of celebration of the opening up of Russia to the western world. Kids in the USSR had been getting their hands on bootleg tapes and merch from Metallica (and other western bands) and this was the first time that those bands were finally able to come over and play live there. That's the entire reason the crowd is so big.

The nursery rhyme of the sandman was about sweet dreams and this is the other side of the sandman who brings nightmares. This was a music festival with a lot of big names there. The estimate was 1.6 million but they lost count that’s why it’s a estimate and the helicopters were misting the crowd with water to cool them down. The number of people who died at this festival was around 50+ people. Oh just to give you an idea how big this was this was a opening performance.

Its all about the lyricism and the music. If you do go down that road, these are must-react metal songs: Master of Puppets (Metallica; super deep lyricism ), One (Metallica), Fade to Black (Metallica), War Pigs (Black Sabbath), Spit It Out (Slipknot - Live at Download 2009 version), Walk (Pantera), Domination (Pantera; heaviest breakdown you'll ever hear), Chop Suey (System of a Down), B.Y.O.B (system of a down), Raining Blood (Slayer).

They were an amazing live band. I saw them OPEN for monsters of rock in 1988. I actually went to see them and the place went nuts! At Foxboro stadium-where the pats play- no longer there. Unreal!!

You can’t be 40 years old and not have heard this song in passing at some point. It’s literally played at some point in at most sporting events. Humanity is basically one step away from issuing this album (the self-titled “Black Album”) to newborns at birth with their social security cards.

agreed 100% about the power of music being able to bring people together. it’s a universal language… i have a bunch of music in languages i don’t speak or understand in my collection that i listen to because i don’t need to understand it if i can feel it 💜 side note: that includes one of my favorite bands that is 4/5 Russian. imo “russia” might be the enemy, but the Russian people are not.

Enemy of who? Russia is no enemy of nobody, they are peaceful people, politically they just reacted to all the infringements that NATO and US have been commited for decades. The problem is some sector of the sionist politicians that have always wanted to destroy Russia and take over all their resources, as they have done with other countries. That doesn't make all US citizens enemies or bad people neither.

They say it was 1.6 million but that isn't an official number, they say there was likely 3-400 thousand more given all the security, police and military not to mention those who couldn't even see the stage lol. Metallica owns all of their music and records on their own label, Blackened Records.

I love this song. It has such an ominous sound, as does much of metal music, but also like much of metal music, the foundation is positive. The “Sandman” is made to sound horrifying, but he’s only mentioned once and the start and then given a head nod at the end. Why? It’s not really about the Sandman, but what he exemplifies- the embodiment of things that terrify children. A child’s nightmares often spawn from something in reality. To the point that both of you guys are making, what is the Sandman bringing to the children of Russia, Ukraine, Israel, the Gaza Strip, or Palestine? For me, metal has always found a way to shed light on the horrors of society, systematic oppression by governments, or the manipulation of governments by special interest groups and the wealthy. Metal allows me to flip a big 🖕🏼 to all of these things while jamming out. It’s brilliantly cathartic. Much love guys, enjoyed as always

The music for the song was written by Metallica guitar player Kirk Hammett, along with Hetfield and Ulrich. The subject matter for the tune was composed by Hetfield, who sings with a rugged growl about a child trying to fall asleep and the nightmares that ensue.

I have seen a interview with James Hetfield about this concert, remember none of them had any idea how many would be coming. They were later told that any rock music was hard to get before the iron curtain was ended. The intro is from the movie the good, the bad and the ugly and is titled Ecstasy of Gold. They have done a concert with San Francisco symphony orchestra, their music gets another deep with the orchestra.
David Garrett is a violinist that plays both classical music and dose covers of movie, pop and rock music. Some songs are The 5th, Thunderstruck, Walk This Way, He’s a Pirate, Kashmir, Peer Gynt, Childs anthem.
