I thought the same. My mechanic didn't even bother to bolt the caliper back on my driver's side brakes he turned and replaced the padding on. Christian went above and beyond. It also sounds like the girlfriend and the roommate were genuinely good people. I am sure they will all have guilt nagging at them, and none of it is their fault. The situation is sad.

Not all heroes wear capes. Christian went above and beyond, looking out for his fellow human. Props to this guy and his parents for raising a decent & honourable citizen.

@@alicegoesnomad8448 I don't see why defunding the police and having a more diverse array of assistance available need to go hand in hand. Personally I'd rather have better funded police and better funded social assistance alternatives.

@@krazeelety he's in the water, they just didn't find him. One of the biggest signs of planning suicide is giving valuable items away. Then sitting for hours in his car, he was thinking about whether to go through with it. It's so sad.

Killing yourself brings so much pain as it is, but to not know whether they're alive or dead or if someone has them and is hurting them or did hurt them, I can't even imagine.

Is that what you’d want for your loved ones and neighbors?
He was definitely one in a million to do that.
Today (August 30) would’ve been my brother’s 50th birthday. He died in June 2018 - not sure if by accident or by choice - also alone on a road after buying a soda and telling his girlfriend that he would sleep in his car. He was also addicted to alcohol, and we learned after his death that he may have been using other substances. My brother was one of the funniest, sweetest, smartest guys you could ever meet. His loss is still hitting me, as it comes in unpredictable waves. Sometimes I reach for my phone to call him, just to remember that he’s gone forever. Rest In peace, Brian and Bryce.
DTs can be fatal but stimulants can mask the symptoms. It can happen that people can be slightly suicidal AND careless at the same time and it can be a very fine line esp with uppers and downers,blood sugar fluctuations and sleep deprivation. Its hard to be alone in the world, and these seem to be the consequences, in this partucular case, by choice.
So sorry for you and your family's loss.

Why did his mother keep insisting he drive to her when he was clearly not okay? The mechanic and police had to check on him multiple times. At that point, stop telling him to drive and come to you and go pick him up! I’m sure hindsight is 2020, but I’m baffled by that choice. I was in a similar situation once and after the second time of telling my mum I’m coming home and clearly not coming home, she drove to me. Picked me up and left my car there. Turns out I was drugged and didn’t realize it until I was already on the road. I hope people learn from this. If someone is not driving home when they’re supposed to, don’t insist they keep driving even if they seem fine. Go pick them up! There’s too many variables that can go wrong on a short 10 minute ride, let alone an hour.
Shout out to Christian tho, he’s a kind soul! And also the girlfriend and roommate, they seemed to really care about him too. I know my roommates wouldn’t call my mum to update her on my weird/change in behaviour.

@@patrickburton1401 many people in these stories are relatable (some more than others, lol!), it’s all part of the human experience. No one can know the pain and struggle that comes with addiction, mental illness, loss, etc. until you or someone your love are in the grips, but we can at least have compassion for those who are fighting to overcome & those who weren’t able to conquer their demons. I too hope Bryce (& you) find peace ❤️🩹

At what point does one human, look another human in the eye, and say, "Seriously, let's have a talk. What's going on, man?" In this day and age? Not many. I'm truly thankful for the few true friends I have.

I'm that guy. The drunkest, most damaged soul at every party or bar would always find me n talk my ear off n I don't mind. I think people instinctively pick up that I am empathetic, a good listener and i don't judge...and I rarely give unsolicited advice. I just listen. That's all a lot of people who are hurting need...someone nonjudgmental to talk to and listen to them vent. And I always been reluctantly glad to do it but i'm glad I had those experiences and could provide a small comfort in a trying time. God knows i need the good karma.
I have spent my time in little rooms where all of us were waiting to undergo the latest medical tests, and have had some of the most rewarding conversations in my life. No one in that situation wants to chat about the weather, and there is an opportunity to speak from the heart. Sometimes people can say things to a stranger that are too painful to say to a loved one - and just listening to them is a cherished gift. Or you can give a word of sympathy and encouragement to someone who is overwhelmed. I am grateful for the time I spent in those little rooms, and I love to meet those rare people who have the courage to let down their barriers and speak from the heart. 🙂

I always find disappearances disturbing. I don't know how the family could ever move on. I wonder about the family also. If the girlfriend was so concerned that she did not want to give him his keys, why did the mother insist that she do so. One never knows what is actually doing on in the family dynamics.
Seems like his mother failed to take this seriously even after speaking with several people who were concerned about him. She wanted to have the final say and long distance decisions made for someone who is troubled can be problematic.
I recall that bryce told his mother he was fine and the girlfriend was just being controlling and possessive and freaking over the break up - the mother chose to believe him over the girlfriend. 😔
Strange I've never heard of this case before. I think the fact that he gave his xbox and diamond earrings to his friend and later called him are signs that he was going to take his own life. The visit to the girlfriend, also a last goodbye. Driving up and down the hill was last minute reluctance or doubt. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

This reminds me so much of my little brother. He's 28 and every week is an emotional rollercoaster. Between mental health issues, medication (self and prescribed), not sleeping (we think due to ADHD meds) and other instability, I'm running out of ideas on how to help. Sometimes he's so angry at us, just for trying to help, and to stop him from taking his own life. I wonder if I'll watch one of these about him one day.

The fact that Bryce had a complete personality change makes me think he suffered from some sort of trauma. His behavior, to me, seemed to be a reaction to that trauma, which to me, comes across as overwhelming depression. My guess is that he wanted to discuss it, he reached out, but it was too painful. It’s sad, but I feel he probably ended his life.
I think it was the drug abuse. The type of stimulate he was using can have very serious side effects. Especially if you aren’t prescribed it by a doctor and being monitored. I had an addiction to adderall and it truly made me lose my mind. I was not well.
@Dani Maybe I mis-heard it but I was under the impression that the drug use was an anomaly and part of his personality change.

Maybe I'm hung up about the Vyvanse, but a stimulant induced psychosis can develop quite rapidly
It's also a long acting medication so if you're overdosing the effects can last for days.
Not to mention but the medication was not being regulated and was not prescribed by a doctor so who knows where the medicine was from or how safe it actually was. And who knows what his dosage was, mix that with alcohol-not good.
I stopped my Vyvanse the other day after 3 years of use. It gives me crazy anxiety and It's hard to notice until you stop it. I was taking it prescribed, I couldn't imagine abusing it. You can't even snort it because it requires a process inside your body to turn it into amphetamines. I'd 100% believe this kid was depressed as fuck because of the Vyvanse and drinking. I have been having terrible suicidal thoughts from shame. It sounds exactly what was happening to Bryce.

@@420noscopesonlylol6 amphetamine withdrawal isn't fun you don't feel pleasure, it's good to taper, or try low dose white and green strain kratom for a few days during the withdrawal, then just drink coffee.

The technician Christian in this case was more than helpful. This case got me. It never left me. Christian is the type of person I would want my young children to turn out to be. He had no responsibility to Bryce or his family yet he went above and beyond. Where did Bryce go? I’m not sure divers were able to successfully dive and search all areas of the lake. Everyone involve must feel they should have done more. Including Christian. It’s something he will think about everyday though Bryce is really no one to him. Those shoulda woulda couldas will always play out in everyone’s mind even if and when they ever find answers.
So a lesson to us all! Do everything you can when you can so no regrets!
@@bthomson Exactly, Bruce. I’d rather be safe than sorry. Too many of us especially nowadays say “I didn’t want to make something out of nothing”. Yet we will never know it’s something….or nothing. Unless it’s too late. I’ve come across this in my own life with my brother who passed from a drug overdose. He was quite stoic with his pain. All of us knew something was different. We just didn’t know exactly what. Perhaps this is why this case stuck with me. I should of. I could of. I would of. But I didn’t. Because I didn’t want to make something out of nothing. And now it’s an unbearable pain that keeps me awake at night.

@@angelabaird7135 Thank You, Angela. It’s been 6 years this November. Though some days it feels like just last week. And oddly enough it feels like eons ago at the same time. It is exactly how it’s described. Holidays aren’t the same. We feel guilty moving on though we have to. But I can say the silver linings are the family checks in on each other more. In a lot of ways it has brought us closer. We never use to “talk”. Especially my hard *ss father. That dynamic has changed. We try to find the positives that Matthew has left us with than the negatives. Thanks for listening. 🙃

The abuse of Vyvanse is not a normal situation. I would at times love everyone and then the moment I feel like I was failing, the fear of confronting it would overshadow everything. It made me beyond narcissistic, and the come down is not good. Depression and anxiety are on another level. I bet that entire situation of him alone was days of feeling nothing but doom. I hope he’s resting easy now.
Prob should’ve taken the time to get the right medication if he needed it. It’s odd to list a drug as the problem when the guy didn’t even have a prescription for it. Not to mention, anyone who knows anything knows alcohol is horrible to mix or take in general really

@@amandanegrete1306 You must not have much experience with substances if you think stimulants are schedule 1 & not 2. Your comment is declarative in nature but factually wrong. My point was if you take something your not prescribed, I have a limited tolerance for if something then goes wrong.. People that do that only make it worse for people that legitimately could use said substances. The laws around substances are already stupid as it is. Ex. alcohol is easily accessible but is dangerous, most definitely contributed to the kids demise.

I am familiar with this case, and I think that he ended his own life. There were certainly many red flags prior to it but nobody was able to put it all together in time for an intervention or maybe they didn’t want to think about the worst that could happen. It’s a very sad case.

I remember this story on the local news. We live very near Sierra College in Rocklin. The reporting was not near as in depth as presented here. Thank you. On a side note, I would like to see Dr. Grande analyze the case of Coleen Ritzer (victim) in 2013 at Danvers High School, Danvers Mass.

It sounds as if this young man had a serious psychological trauma, something he was not able to work through. The sudden excessive substance abuse may have been his attempt to quiet the event/thoughts he experienced. There is something he discovered or experienced that could not live with.
Agreed maybe he was raped and couldnt tell his parents or somehow blamed them.

That's my first thought as well. It could've also been a drastic drug reaction, but that might be secondary to the traumatic incident. Or possibly the drugs kicked off schizophrenia, I've heard of that happening with other drugs (not Vyvanse). Whatever happened to this young man, it must've led to so much internal distress 🙁xx

It’s crazy how many people, including police, that interacted with him before he disappeared. I think the amphetamine use played a big part in this. It can really mess with your mental health especially if you aren’t being monitored by a doctor or prescribed it.

@@alicegoesnomad8448 Yes when you feel like taking your life, you go back and forth, but if you can just hold on until the next day MOST TIMES people report being happy that they did not act on it. Thats why crisis support hot lines are really important, they can talk to you until you are calm enough to think more clearly.
Vyvanse isnt an amphetamine, and its garbage. Strange why he chose that instead of Adderall or Ritilan as a college student

@@alicegoesnomad8448 the family had non intention to come to Bryce. They slept whilst he was obviously struggling and the knew it. They had plenty of time to come to his aid.
I think Bryce had made it very clear, from hindsight, that Bryce didn't want to be alive. He was dismantling his relationship with his girlfriend. He was giving away prized possessions. And he just seemed to be doing his best NOT to return home. I've always wondered if Bryce was a victim of a sexhal assault. It is massively difficult to get someone at his age to understand it wasn't his fault and that his parents and friends wouldn't judge him. I think he attempted when he drove off the embankment because at night it looks like water below. But when that didn't happen, he night have cleaned up af the truck stop and hitched a ride. In this instance, I think he willingly left his life.
I was also pondering the theory of him being assaulted. Sometimes people don't realize how deeply violating that is. But I was wondering more along the lines of if it was a family member who did it and that's why he didn't want to go back home.
Bryce did want to be alive because the law of self-preservation kicked in as he was going through his ritual of abandonment. But what he didn't want to do is continue to live in a mortal frame while pursuing the Supreme Consciousness of Truth reserved for those who seek the highest ideals.
I feel the same way. I feel like _it_ must have happened to him whilst enrolled in that English class or just after that, bc I can't imagine doing anything that positive to "get ahead" for the next semester if I was in some respects not trying to envision a future.
I will go back and watch the video again to try to pick up on what caused the family to move to California and pay better attention to the timeline and details before the journey home began. It did strike me as well, though, that 19 is the textbook age for a male to present with schizophrenia, if I recall. But everyone saying that he seemed fine to drive, aside from the GF, doesn't really support that conclusion. Trying to be so drunk that I may have the guts to end my suffering or at least to escape my suffering temporarily sounds like S.A. Not feeling the GF, instead drinking heavily and playing video games not wanting to spend the night when around her kinda gives me the feeling like, idk maybe he doesn't want to accept his sexual identity? But the abrupt onset of the crisis seems more like something happened to him than anything else. It's troubling not knowing the outcome. I'm sorry for all involved and all that are going through similar situations. Sleep deprivation is a hell of a thing too, though. And who knows what effects the ADHD meds bring to the equation. I'm talking from a place of familiarity too. I do meth, been locked up in a mental institution for a couple months, suicidal, bipolar, depressed, few times in jail, probation, a week in rehab, never married, no kids, no career, worthless, pointless life...but I've never really been abused that I recall, so I don't know for sure about that angle. But that's what I felt, intuitively, when I was listening to Dr. Grande lay out the timeline. Let me tell you though, I WILL SIT in the car or my apt or wherever for TOO LONG, like an invalid sometimes...just peril-ized. Not catatonic, just like hyper-procrastinating or something, I guess. Idk. I better stop before I get ambushed by a welfare check. 😶🌫️

Bryce's parents were domineering and basically forced him to go to that specific college. In fact, they forced a lot of things on him, trying their damnedest to control his life. Some believe that he was reticent to tell his parents he wanted to drop out of college, so as a last resort, he crashed his car (another shackle connecting him to his parents) and began anew somewhere else. People tend to hold the belief that it's nearly impossible to go missing on purpose and remain undetected, but it really isn't. Take it from a guy who did it for over ten years.
True,the street kid circuit exists, and if you never been in the system you cannot be identufied, as of now anyways. Dna testing is more prevalent these days. This esp makes sense because he already was an aldoholic so its not like he isnt gonna spange. He went to a rest stop. I bet if he still alive he in boston or berkeley

This case isn't actually that complicated but maybe that's just because I've literally witnessed these types of things in my own family. Bryce was starting to abuse Vyvanse (Lisdexamfetamine) which is actually derivative of Amphetamine similar to Adderall and/or Meth. When taken not as prescribed and/or abused it can cause you to stay awake for long periods of time which also affects the persons' mental state to a point of delirium. In order to come down a little from that, he started drinking and soon realized that what he normally drank wasn't working which is why he switched to the liquor. At this point, the body is so exhausted and drained that it starts crashing which explains him falling asleep in random places regardless of the situation. You also lose your sense of time during all of this. To him, he might have thought he was taking 30min nap(s) when in reality it was actually 6-7hrs. Eventually, paranoia starts to set in and you start seeing things and thinking things that aren't really happening. Now at this point, he is fully unhinged and anything he does isn't really going to make much sense hence why there is all of this confusion. He himself couldn't even tell you what was going on even if he could but it sounds like he might have gotten freaked out and drove off of the bridge either by accident or on purpose trying to escape from something that wasn't even there. After the crash, he ran away from the accident either trying to avoid getting in trouble or still trying to escape whatever he was paranoid about in the first place. Now, as far as his whereabouts are concerned I couldn't tell you. I'm just letting you know that the reason for all of the confusion here is because of the substances that he was taking which in turn makes people do things that don't necessarily make any sense.
I agree. If this case turns out to be suicide, it seems to me that it’s because of medication-induced (along with alcohol) psychosis.
Kinda like being spun out on meth. Only it takes a little bit longer to happen from prescription amphetamines. But drinking all of the time on top of taking those pills might make it happen faster

Wish the parents had driven the one hour it would take to get to him when he said he wanted to rest. If they picked him up, they could always go back for the car later. I hope they don't feel regret at waiting, but that could have possibly changed the outcome. From the time he pulled over to rest to the time he disappeared would have given them enough time to get to that dam area.
I know every family is different, but my parents always told me they'd come pick me up no questions asked whether I'm drunk, at some party, or in any sort of jam. All of my friends had parents with more or less the same policy. I am baffled by his parents inaction. I hope his parents are able to cope with whatever happened, but feeling regret about waiting is something natural given there seems a good chance they'd have found him had they acted immediately, as I think most parents would have.
If only he was black, the cops would have arrested him and he'd be safe in prison to this day.

I don’t think it’s fair to criticize the parents. I know it is frustrating for viewers, who don’t even know this person, that he went missing. But, imagine how the family and friends must feel, especially his parents. The “what if” thoughts must be unimaginably difficult. Comments like this verge on insensitivity to those who loved this real life person who is now gone.

I think Brycemade it to the truckstop and hitched a ride with a trucker and probably gave the trucker some destination he was going to.
I think Bryce asked to be let out at a certain place and I think there he took his own life.
This sounds very much like a psychotic break to me, and he was at the right age for a psychotic break. I think hid switch to hard liquor and that drug brought on his psychotic break.

Come to think of it, we had a semi-traumatic/embarrassing Pizza Hut incident when visiting the U.S. as a group of teens 🤔 - half of the group (probably those who had cheese sticks) got horrible diarrhea, there were only two toilets and one was out of order (even before the incident - (can't think why 🤔!)) - can't swear to what happened to the other toilet - so when we arrived (late) to meet our host families, the very first thing my American boyfriend and I talked about when he came to meet me was my diarrhea - not exactly sexy 😅! Well, I learned a new word in English!
Brace was sitting on the side of the road contemplating suicide when the officers pulled up he passed all of their tests because he was not intoxicated he was severely depressed and should have been taken to a mental health facility Bryce disappeared probably because he committed suicide. Yes it's just a speculation but I work in mental health and I have suffered from crippling depression you don't pull over on the side of the road after you have everything figured out to blow off steam you pull over to figure out how you want to die. Please don't be afraid to take these people into a mental health facility.

It seems as though Bryce had a plan to end his life but was ambivalent about it. So many Red flags, giving away his personal valuables, breaking off relationships, binge drinking and others. I don’t it’s correct to blame others. I sadly believe he succeeded in his plan.
As a mom, I cannot fathom the guilt she feels. She probably second guessed herself so much and ended up making the wrong decision to not drive to him. But I don’t blame her at all. He may have ended his life anyway at a later date.
Find some interviews with her. You may change your mind.

From that first call especially at that time of night I would've been out there looking for my son. I had a call about midnight from my cousin ome night. I was already in bed, rollers in my hair ready to sleep but we jumped out of bed without hesitation. We picked him up, hubby drove my cousins car and I drove my cousin in our car. Anything couldve happened to him that night. I try to avoid shoulda woulda couldas. Lifes too short. My heart goes out to the family. RIP Bryce❤🙏🏽

Being sleep-deprived makes it difficult for most ppl to behave rationally, certainly I cannot stay up more than 24 hrs w/o becoming extremely annoying and fruity.
I used to be that way when I was sleep-deprived. Now that I’m older (age 47), I get short-tempered with people and hopeless in the face of even small problems.
Staying up days like that is usually because they don't feel tired because they are in a bi-polar manic phase. I get the feeling this guys drinking and drug use was an attempt to runaway from the fear of knowing he had mental illness. They start hearing voices etc and try to drink it away because at first it works. Knowing you are losing your mind must be really scary.

I used to do it regularly as an undergrad, I was working 20-30 hrs a week and a full time college student. I made it, but I walked everywhere. Then, I went to grad school in my 30s. Full time job, plus some, and full time grad student. This time my university was 35 mins from home and I commuted, of course I also drove to work. I don't know if the difference was my older age or the fact that I was driving, but during the grad school years, I realized that I was not exactly sane when I was up for over 30 hrs. I would slam my brakes for nothing, but I kept seeing lights and images in the road, and I was sure I was going to run over someone. I can remember thinking I should just end everything, I was too crazy to live. It was a scary really, and I did not even have a substance abuse problem to contribute to places my mind went.
As a mom, I cant imagine how his parents are feeling. Absolutely heartbreaking. I hope they find out what happened to him. Thank you so much for the video 🌵🌳🌿🌵
I don't have children. Every time I see a story about a parent with a loss of a child, I wonder how on earth the poor parents survive. I can't imagine how horrible that would be.
I totally remember when this happened. So mysterious and confusing. I lived in the area, and at the time, I clearly remember the odd circumstances of this event. Our little local paper ran the story with his image on the front page and listed Bryce as a missing person. I kept his image in my car to keep an eye out for him, because I work near where he went missing.

When I heard about this case before, I felt he was actually trying to get away from his parents…like they were suffocating him. Not literally, of course.
i kind of had the same feeling. his girlfriend called his mother, his friend called his mother, his mother was ready to board a flight that night.. heck even roadside assistance and police called his mother. he was an adult who moved away and couldnt turn a corner without his mother still there. he probably felt cornered and suffocated instead of comforted and loved. i wish he felt the latter way so he couldve relieved the thing that was burdening him

Yeah, and maybe he sat waiting in his car for hours on end to see if they cared and would bother to come and get him. I've just started to ask my mother what she would've done and when I was only half way through asking she said "I'd immediately stop whatever I was doing and come straight out to get you".

I don't find it hard to believe that someone as young as 19 could fool a cop into thinking they were sobor.
I've seen it done many times. If there is anything that addicts seem to be good at; it would be deceit.

Also if he was under the influence of vyvanse at the time, it would explain why he wasn't showing symptoms of extreme fatigue despite being awake for multiple days.
But they also tested him and there was nothing in the car.

@@oliverquach9614 field soboriety test is primarily used for detecting alcohol/sedative consumption.
Amphetamine (vyvanse in particular is far less recreational and prone to abuse than say meth or adderall) doesn't tend to impair cognitive function unless taken in extreme doses, so I doubt a field sobriety test would have picked that up.
@@icturner23 they didn't give him a drug test, they gave him a field sobriety test, Also vyvanse has a half life of 12 hours, so he could have consumed the drugs long before he was pulled over, and still been under the influence.
I've personally witnessed multiple people pass field sobriety tests under the influence of amphetamine

Great analysis Dr Grande, I was hopeful, that after his failed suicide attempt he walked away to start a new life but your theory makes more sense. Also, impressed you picked up on Bryce's 'possible" uncomfortable relationship with his mother. I picked up on this after viewing many of his mother's interviews, and her Facebook entries.
She appears to be domineering, controlling, in denial, and narcissistic, Several times she has stated, "My son would never commit suicide; he just wouldn't do that to us." This statement demonstrates that she is unable to sympathize with what he was going through... Instead, it's all about her pain.
Saw those interviews with her. Total narcissist.

I wonder if he wasn’t waiting for a drug dealer or something. When my wife was in active addiction, she would sometimes take off and wait half a day for her dealer to get back to her.

I swear, just now I thought to myself: oh yeah I was suicidal once about 9-10 years ago when I was the same age. Then I google him and come to find out that he was born a month after me. We were suicidal at the same time. No matter how bad it gets, depression will end at some point, and how long that takes will depend on a few factors. I really feel for this guy. Such a tragic way to go. RIP
Sounds like classic suicidal planning, giving away possessions, breaking up with loved ones giving closure, able to seem normal in most situations, the car crash. Think it's likely he walked into the woods or lake and killed himself there.

Sounds like he was severely depressed in the time before his death. Also, how he kept heading home, stopping, heading home again makes me think he was having doubts about killing himself. The way he got upset when someone brought up his mother, because he knew how hurt she would be. Maybe he had problems nobody knew of. Some people don't talk to anyone about their real problems. The increased alcohol and drug use could have been how he was coping with things. Until, he couldn't, any longer. Very sad case. Just speculating on what could have happened, in a case like this.

This reminds me of the Diane Schuler case, where family seems to be in denial about someone's mental health and substance abuse, even when they're in obvious distress and on the road. Go get them, for god's sake! I'm also irked at the mum, who had just been told by his roommate about Bryce's strange behaviour and substance abuse, and still she persuades his girlfriend to give him back his car keys.
That was an imbecile decision! Maybe it proves that as a parent she was lacking?

Young people can put on a pretty good front with their parents. She believed what he was saying.
For myself and literally everyone my age I knew as a kid, our parents all had a policy of immediately coming to pick us up if we were ever drunk, at a party, or in any other jam. I really don't understand the parents not immediately jumping in a car and going to find him with it being a 2 am phone call. Even if he seriously downplayed the situation, I would have done everything possible to get someone to stop him while I drove out to pick him up.
Well, the situation might have been that his parents wanted the car they paid back ASAP.
The girlfriend “could have been” the hero but was rejected by Bryce’s parents, sadly.
I saw an interview with the parents. His Mom seems like a real piece of work.
I’ve always thought Bryce was probably suicidal and swam out into the lake his car was found next to and killed himself.
Dr. Grande, Hi! Im just rewatching some of your older content... Would you do a video (or do you have a video already) on psychosis brought on by sleep deprivation? I think that it's something more people deal with than anybody talks about. Whether the reason for the lack of sleep is stress, insomnia, prescription amphetamines or any other reasons.

Saw a comment on here that in an interview his mother seemed “not nice” I searched it out she seems nice enough IMO. Hurting as any loved one would be.
A really sad situation his parents will probably be tortured with "if only" and the not knowing for sure if he did commit suicide, and not being able to lay him to rest.

Dr. Grande, I agree. I believe that he took his own life. He attempted this earlier, by accelerating his vehicle over the bluff. He could have jumped into the lake, perhaps from the dam. The other two scenarios are much more implausible to me. I'm glad to see there are people out there who are concerned for and willing to help strangers.
Not an important point, but it is very common in California to go to a community college close to the 4 year university they hope to attend. As his girlfriend was probably at CSU Chico, it would be relatively close.
I was going to say the same thing, he may not have gotten into the 4 year university straight from high school. After 2 years in community it’s a much easier switch
I'm not American but that makes a lot of sense to me. If he wanted to move away from home, but didn't get the grades for a 4 year university or didn't want the academic intensity or whatever, I think it makes sense to go to community college in a city away from home.

I say this is likely a suicide based on giving away valuable possessions and seeking closure with people he cared about. The red eyes were from crying and/or fatigue, dehydration, etc., whether that was enhanced by the drugs and alcohol is questionable based on the sobriety tests and stuff. Very sad case and even worse if he didn't die instantly. 😔

The problem with the suicide theory is how do you kill yourself and hide your body? That is the only part that doesn't make sense to me.

They say he could have drown in the lake or the ocean after injuring himself on his way out of the car. I'm probably biased because my sister committed suicide at age 22, when I was 20, and I now have an 18 year old son. And I know it's awful to place blame in a situation like this because the subtle warning signs seem so much more obvious after the fact, but they knew he was totally out of it and exhausted for days, even reported him missing and found him exhausted and trying to sleep in his car and just left him there on the side of the road AGAIN based on the policemen opinion even long after he said he was having a really hard time, knowing he had gone through a breakup, a flat tire, ran out of gas, gotten lost, had a dead phone, and friends had expressed a lot of concern. So either before or after his car was totaled, he may have decided he just couldn't take anymore. I just can't imagine a time when he could have needed his parents more, and I wonder if this is the kind of "tough love" they've always raised him with.

I've seen commentary on this case before. I felt that all the starts and stops Bryce was either working up the courage to kill himself maybe finding the ideal place to do it at the same time wrestling with the conflict the parental interference was causing him. How many people have tow truck drivers and police stopping in the middle of their suicide process saying call your Mom and putting her on the phone? It did show that a person could pretend and appear normal to police at the same time they were struggling with inner turmoil. I could never figure out how they cops didn't pick up some kind of red flag. This was a bizarre case.
Young people who think nothing will ever change or they can't see past being 19, and make serious life changes have to somehow realize, this too will pass! It's good to get help I did when I suffered with panic attacks in my late 20's and thirties, it the most debilitating feeling,, but it does pass,. I hope he is still alive and comes back to live his life better than ever!

I agree with Dr. Grande's assessment of this case. The only additional piece of information I would add is the Castaic Lake rest stop and recreational area has a history of missing persons, crime and bizarre situations.
Could we also be looking at some kind of abuse at home? I find it odd that he was so conflicted about going home, granted he probably wouldn't have wanted to get home while he was still under the influence of stimulants or alchohol. In addition, I find it very strange that his parents did not immediately make their way to him? They kept either ignoring or disregarding the numerous warning signs of someone wanting to end their life, eg; giving away of personal possessions, breaking off relationships and heavy alcohol and or narcotic use. Very sad situation and should serve as a reminder to all of us, especially, now under current health risks of Covid 19, that the rate of suicide in this country has surpassed epidemic levels and no one is talking about it. You will never hear the main stream media disucssing the skyrocketing amount of people who have committed suicide over the past year and a half. Those of us who work in mental health are standing on the rooftops, screaming as loud as we can that we are facing a serious situation of epic proportion if we do not act now! Please, if you know of anyone suffering a mental health crisis, get them help now. There are wonderful organizations like NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness) that will provide all the support you need and more importantly they can provide you with valuable resources to get help. When anyone trips as many red flags as Bryce had with multiple friends phoning parents expressing great concern for Bryce...plus running out of gas and then inexplicably zoning out in the same rest-stop for hours and hours...if this were my kid I'd ask the police to hold him on the premise of altered behavior and I'd drop everything and zoom on down and pick him up and get him some professional help.

"Vyvanse is a stimulant used to treat ADHD." While true this can be misleading. It is a compound that affects people differently that is used for all kinds of things. Vyvanse is slow-release. How much was he taking? Was he taking it for something other than ADHD because he could not get a prescription for an off-label use? Either way it could contribute to insomnia. One of the most annoying side effects is being exhausted but not being able to sleep. This could result in a psychosis from sleep deprivation.
Probably the same reason most college students abuse it. To stay up and get more done.
In sweden you say elvanse but i think it is the same drug.
