As a female teacher this is absolutely terrifying. With the hoodies, gloves, and weapons, this was clearly premeditated.
Listen to your instincts if you ever get bad vibes about someone. Your subconscious picks up body language, micro expressions, etc. that give a truly bad person intent on violence away. Women especially, are taught to be nice so they can unfortunately dismiss those subconscious warnings.
There is a good book, ‘The Gift of Fear’ that everyone should read., which explains all of this.

The case talked in here is beyond horrific.
The murderer for some reason thought of that teacher as less than a leaf, than a thing, than garbage. He killed her and ended her precious one of a kind life.
This story is unbelievably sad and scary just as the mentality we now have in the world of human life valued as less than a leaf.

Such a scary case. This young woman was loved by students and making differences in their lives. No one would ever have thought something like that would happen inside a school. She went to work like any other day and had the horrible misfortune of running into a violent deviant.

I’m a high school math teacher who has an”open door” policy meaning that students may see me for help after school without an appointment. I’m always alone with male students. It has never occurred to me that this could happen. My heart hurts for this teacher. She just didn’t deserve this. Thanks for covering this case as I never heard about it before.

@@davidlee723 There's no indication either that he had the mental maturity of an adult. In fact, based off of his behavior, he was probably mentally immature for his age. Being tried as an adult is almost entirely driven by the severity of the crime in an effort to maximize punishment. If he were tried as a kid, the sentence would be much less severe.
I'm not saying whether this is right or wrong. I don't...know what is the exact appropriate punishment for something this abhorrent, especially when they attempted the same thing again in prison.

Hard to believe that nearly a decade has passed since this story aired - it feels like it happened merely a couple of years ago. It is especially startling how paramount the role of dark fantasy must have been in the mind of someone so young, that the sexual impulse would've crossed with the violence impulse at 14 is chilling. The sexual -staging- posing of Colleen's body shows an utterly remorseless individual who absolutely _hates_ women, and wants to degrade them even post-mortem. He'd likely been thinking about stuff like this for years. If he's let out in 40 years, he will definitely be strong enough (and so-inclined, if you ask me) to kill again.
I agree!! Imo, Philip is a sociopath with sexual deviance, impulsive, explosive and most definitely a profound hatred of women... I also think he would pose a danger if and when he is released... no matter how much time has gone by...

Maybe but he was still a child and even psychotic children cannot dream of killing people if they are not exposed to such things in some way. I'm placing the blame squarely on neglectful parents. Kids do what they see. Don't let them watch violence and sex. Don't have cable. Childproof their internet access. Take them to libraries and book stores for fun. You'll end it up with harmless comic-book-collecting cinophile geeks whose past times include writing survival guides for the upcoming zombie apocalypse. But, at least they know not to hurt anybody.

From everything I’ve heard about her, Colleen was an awesome teacher, excited about math and her job, and went out of her way to help every student. May she rest in peace.
He is just evil. The pains he took to cover up his crimes shows he KNEW what he did was wrong. That shows intent. Super human huh? Riiiiiiight, nice story this kid came up with to try to get away with murder. I, as others have lived through traumatic events and surprisingly have not committed murder. They can and they do. Institutions were quite rightly disbanded, but unfortunately no comprehensive replacement was substituted. In the UK ‘care in the community’ pretty much means ‘no care into the community’ and schizophrenics aren’t even required to take their medication regularly whilst in the community.

Psychologists don't like you to use the actual term "psychotic" when referring to adolescents -- it has something to do with brain growth and development. It's only when a person's brain is fully matured that the psychotic _tendencies_ become true psychopathy.

I had a similar, crazy childhood. I would make up a story and run with it. The last one lasted about a year. Then one day I just fessed up. Boy, were my friends pissed. But I was forgiven. I should have written stories for a living.

It’s heartbreaking to think that a 14-year old can commit such a heinous crime. The scary part is that he displayed no unusual behaviors prior to the homicide.
As for Colleen, my heart goes out to her. 🥺 What a tragedy, she woke up and went to work that day only to meet with a fatal encounter.

Guaranteed his parents, teachers from his previous school and other students had seen and heard some pretty disturbing things from Phillip that they chose to ignore. A 14 year old committing a crime like this had to have given a few pretty strong warning signs previously.

Dr. Grande, as someone who is completing his MSW and will be pursuing clinical licensure, and who has been disheartened by interactions with clinicians who do not appear to utilize evidence-based measures during treatment or assessment, I just want to voice that your perspectives are both refreshingly grounded and inspiring.

The final discussion on mental health evaluation was the most interesting. I'd like you see a video of your opinions on scientific tools such as brain scans and how much they can explain brain activity. Such as differing areas of the brain being used by different people with mental health issues. To determine if these scientific tools can actually help provide a comparative baseline for how mental issues effect thinking.

As a neuroscientist i can tell you that scans currently cannot match a clinicians assessment. For psychopaths it has been demonstrated that they indeed have significant deviations but this would be obvious from their behavior anyway.

Dr Daniel Amen has been using SPECT scans for help in informing how to treat certain conditions. If memory serves, he found six brain patterns in ADHD.
Brain scans and other instrumental tools to assess abnormal behaviour are like standing outside a sports arena and trying to determine what is happening on the playing field by listening to the roar of the crowds. You might get a general idea but the resolution is very coarse indeed.
I heard about this case a few years ago. As a father to a similarly aged daughter, my heart absolutely grieves for her parents.
I find it very refreshing that you said point blank that mental health clinicians don't have sophisticated tools for assessment. As a therapist it's something I find frustrating, but there isn't anything else we have at this point. The entire field is more subjective that we want to admit, and I think we'd be better off just facing that vs. trying to make something sound more objective than it truly is.

Thank you for covering this! This happened in the town next to me and I can’t pass the school without thinking about Colleen. At the time this happened, I worked with a lot of Danvers High students who had her as a teacher and so many of them got tattoos in her honor. Just shows how much she meant to people. Rip

This happened where I grew up. The trial was in my hometown of Salem, MA. It was a total media zoo. I also knew someone who knew the boy well, said he was just real quiet and nobody ever expected him to do something like this

@@sinsinnomore5555 I think out of everyone I see or follow on you tube dr Grande is the LEAST person to seek social media approval. There is really not much to criticize on this channel. However, on his podcast channel viewers post criticism more often, especially on the beginning videos and he/they heart them all. Which looks like they read them and take them to account. I sometimes even see replies on the criticism and they actually have made alot of improvements.

What I appreciate is you're willing to say that this rape and murder happened because the perpetrator wanted to do it. You don't take the sometimes all too frequent approach of almost defining such apparently inexplicable crimes as inherent evidence of mental illness.
You don't really express an opinion about whether he should ever get out of jail. Other than to express pessimism due to the nature of his crime and the fact that he also attacked a female guard while in custody. 40 years is a long time but he won't be that old at 54 and, as you indicate, he will have a hard time in prison. It's hard to imagine he'd emerge from prison and make great positive contributions to society. I just we can hope he doesn't make more great negative "contributions."

Was there any...you know...actual evidence of psychosis? I guess the voices could have said "don't forget the gloves" and "remember where the recycling bin is in relation to the elevator" but I doubt it. That looks like a very organized for a 14 year old plan execution to me. He wasn't agitated about being asked about Tennessee, he was annoyed that his plan was being delayed.

Being from the area at that time, I remember local media reporting on the violent past of the kid, (which was thought to be why they came to Danvers from TN). The kid was messed up but most people in Danvers didn’t know). 😢💔😢
So horrid. Poor Colleen. Not to mention the hell her family had to endure after her death. (I used to be a grief facilitator in child loss groups.). So heartbreaking to all who knew her.

I taught for 12 years. I loved teaching and cared deeply about my students. I still think of them today.

For a vibrant young educator's promise to be destroyed in this senselessly evil and brutal way is tragic. I am often torn around the issue of imprisonment vs rehabilitation when minors commit violent crimes but not in this case.

I just moved to Danvers, to teach in a nearby public school system. I just learned about this case as the 10-year anniversary came up. So shocking. Dr. G., that’s the most eerie chronicle of a case you’ve given so far. So much human tragedy in the world today. A very sad situation, indeed…how was that NOT deemed problematic as to the suspected mental illness? Okay-I’ll let you finish…okay, I hear you. It’s just hard to believe that a fourteen year-old could do something like that.
Odd that no one mentions his recent onset of puberty ie sexual feelings, and that Colleen was a very attractive young woman who was out of reach for him sexually (he told police she was a girl, but she wasn't, she was his teacher). Violent hatred of a women by a man who can't get sex from her, and his determination to annhilate her, or a women/girl like her, seems to me to be very common but not usually discussed by psychologists.

I think you need to be careful here.. we cant just vilify all men/boys because one of them did this. Yes hormones exist.. but not every person starts murdering people, society conditions young men to bottle up and hide thier emotions, we need to look at it systemically that way, instead of attacking an entire gender.

I'm a retired teacher....I was targeted and stalked on my street. Luckily I was carrying a spray bottle of a caustic kitchen solution in my open-top tote bag. I knew I had to make a defensive move so I sprayed the bottle at the ground ;;;;and it made a very loud noise. The villain boilted across the street ...jumped over a hedge and ran out of sight. Vulnerable people should carry a spray.....he probably thought it was mace or pepper spray.....it saved me from being a victim.

I live in Danvers and went to Danvers High School. My children are students there now. This crime was horrifying. The morning after it happened we were all notified through a "robo" call that schools in the district were closed due to an ongoing investigation. What is amazing to me is that while it took place during after school hours, there is still a lot of action taking place, and a lot of students, teachers, and people coming and going. If you were to notice a young person, wearing a balaclava, wheeling a very large recycling bin out of the school, down the sidewalk, and up into the wooded area behind the high school it would stick out like a sore thumb. If you watch the survellience video, his pants are covered in blood when he re enters the school after disposing of her body. I cant wrap my brain around the fact that nobody stopped him, if only to ask him about the blood and if he was okay. Im also amazed at the amount of ground he covered on foot that evening. The store he shoplifted from is a few miles away from the high school. After the movie, which wasn't far from the store, he proceeded to make it all the ay to Topsfield, which is the next town over, but a long walk if that is what happened. There were never any reports of him hitching a ride so one has to assume he made it there on foot. Its crazy to me he did all of this after committing murder and putting her body where he did. RIP Colleen.
I might add that the wooded area behind the school is off the parking area which is still fairly full during after school hours with student and faculty coming and going, not to mention parents sitting in their vehicles waiting to pick up their student right at the door he exited the building through.
I live in a town next to Danvers and I always thought this case was a fever dream and it didn’t actually happen. I heard about it while I was in middle school but it sounded so extreme . Still can’t believe it happened people are so evil.

Once against a waste of space of a human removes an individual who contributes to making the world a better place, if just by who she was and how she treated others. Colleen took on a role to contribute to the betterment of young people’s lives. When you have a student like Autumn who stays past the time she could have left school just because she wants to be around a particular teacher speaks volumes about how that educator makes others feel. Damn you, P. Chism.

I hate to bring up non-clinical terms for people, but in the early 1980s, the "60 Minutes" television program had an episode about adolescents who committed similar crimes. It was Called "Walking Time Bombs". Philip was one of these.

A completely senseless killing for absolutely no reason. This case has always stuck with me and turns my stomach. She was an innocent teacher just working in a job she was passionate about. She did nothing wrong. Nothing. 😞
Yeah, it's disturbing how a such an evil crime as this could happen to this woman who was just doing her job, helping her students.

I used to live in Danvers and still have lots of family in the area. Watching this case through local media was frightening and so weird at the same time. Danvers High School was right down the road, and had I stayed living there (before we moved as a kid) I would've gone there, close enough to walk. That Hollywood Hits cinema is now out of business. Also Danvers (when Salem Village) decided to split from Salem proper, their petition to the King was refused. Danvers split from Salem anyway, and put the king's answer to the petition on the town's seal.
17:03 Dr. Grande, your input on the validity of Rorschach tests makes me feel infinitely better. I had to undergo this ridiculous psychiatric evaluation as an adolescent. The shrink ended up telling me my results were the same as “people who eventually went on to commit suicide” so they’d have “to watch me closely”. Even if that were true, I have no idea wtf she would have told me that. Do I have issues w/suicidal ideation? Yeah, and yes I’ve tried to take my own life. That being said…I’m not sure what possible benefit there is essentially telling me that I’m low key cursed.

Very informative I've followed this case and you revealed alot I didn't know. He absolutely should not ever be released. Diminished responsibility due to mental illness does not apply in this case or many others and I am sick of how this.defence is inappropriately considered. He's a sadistic predator. We desperately need sufficient funding for mental health everywhere.
