They should have given him a standing ovation! This man was one of the greatest guitar players ever. And I think it'll be a very long time before we see someone of his capabilities and talents. You can tell he really, really loved playing the guitar. He was a natural at it. Just to see him smiling and walking around the stage playing a 12-string guitar like it was only a 6-string (I'm talking about the fact that a 12-string is more difficult to play because of the wider neck and the strings being closer together), is amazing! I really wish I could have seen him in concert! Well, maybe he'll be playing guitar up in Heaven and I'll be able to see him up there! LOL

Absolutlely my thoughts too. Just looking at their faces he had a full orchestra of highly trained professional musicians intently focused on their sheet music hanging in there by their fingertips and he was just wandering around the stage smiling and playing from memory.
Also need to take into account, members of a background band/orchestra can change constantly, and they are always playing different music. One week they are working with one artist, the next someone completely different. And one week may be playing classical, the next week show tunes, the next who knows what. Not to mention, this was not played at the standard speed. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Campbell was a true talent, but he had been practicing and performing his music for decades. The people in the orchestra may have just be handed the sheet music a few days ago.
@Robert Hudson He was part of the wrecking crew. He was very comfortable "staying put" He walked around for the audience to see him. I was commenting on the juxtaposition of his easygoing style, and the concentrated focus of the orchestra.
Sometime in then late 1990s I saw an ad in the local paper that Glen Campbell was performing at the Fayette County Fair in La Grange Texas. I have always been a fan of his and quickly made plans to attend. Mind you this was in August in Texas. We took our seats in the building, a sheet metal building with a few fans blowing the hot air around. It was a small stage and there were only about 50 people there. Glen started playing at about 7pm and the temperature was over 100 degrees in the building. We were not disappointed as he performed all of his top hits. He was completely soaked from sweating in that horrible heat. He played over an hour. The show was over much too soon but we found out that he was doing a second show at 9pm. Needless to say we stayed for the second show too. During the break, a crew member came out and tuned Glen's guitars with some sort of electronic device. As soon as Glen came out for the second show he picked up his guitars and started tuning them by ear. He was said to have perfect pitch. He performed The William Tell Overture including the part of playing on his head. The second show was as good or better than the first. It was a very small venue for Glen but he played and sang his heart out and I will never forget that magically night. What a talent he was!
When his mind was failing him, the music always came. It saved his life, right up until it was time to go. Thank you, Glen. You were one heckuva picker.
When Glen first burst on the scene, us guys in high school thought he was corny. Heavy metal for us, baby! Now, all these years later, listening to this and his live version of the "Wichita Lineman" with its regret, yearning, and transcendent hopefulness, I can't get enough of his artistry. Kudos to all of you who had the depth of feeling to appreciate him right away. Guess I had to grow up and grow into it. Just glad I caught up.
Same here, I grew up with musicians that very much appreciated him and Roy Clark. Took me getting older to understand why, adds a level of fondness to some memories and made them great.
Here in Australia he was venerated, back in the 70s when I first heard him you had to wait weeks sometimes months to buy a cassete of his music and songs.
There is a stunning version of this piece I have heard that isn't an orchestra...it's just Glen Campbell, with one guy keeping rhythm on what sounds like a hi-hat. He plays EVERYTHING...on a 12-string guitar.
When you can play at this level you know you've arrived on the world stage as one of the all time greatest guitar players ever. Glen you may be gone but you are not forgotten.
Glen will never be forgotten. And as a vocalist, I think I began to really love his tone even more, as he grew older. His range dipped down into baritone territory. He could hit those low notes now, which I don't think he could hit before. And his tone got a bit grittier. You can hear that with his brief sorties with Jimmy Webb, one-on-one. Same thing goes for George Jones, he kept going from a tenor to a baritone as he got older. He could always hit those low notes if he wanted to, but now even his speaking voice got really, really deep.
Glen Travis Campbell is most underrated guitarist-singer ever. In my opinion he is the greatest pop, rock n roll, and country guitarist. He is an American Treasure!

So many of the all time greats don't hesitate to call him one of, or often THE BEST guitarist ever. Alice Cooper just loved hanging out with him... and learning. The critics say the same. And the fans... ditto. There was absolutely nothing underrated about him. Maybe it's simple hyberbole... idk, but UA-camrs just love to use that word.... incorrectly.

People gradually recognized genius of Schubert few decades after his passing. He was underrated by many behind Mozart and Beethoven as they had rich patrons support and rock stars at the time in Vienna. To me Schubert was the greatest composer in history even by sheer volume: over 1,200 pieces of music more than the other two combined. Franco Corelli was underrated tenor because during his peak career did not have the wide media coverage like Pavarotti. As for Campbell, many say he was underrated and few label him as one of the great guitarists. I dare them to be brave and just simply admit he was the greatest guitarist like I am saying.
Glen got his first guitar at age four and never learned how to read music - he was a prodigy, not given enough credit for his many talents. Truly a Giant in the History of Music
@@gatecam I really enjoy his version of Yesterday When I was Young - many big names sang that tune back in the day, including Andy Williams Roy Clark and one of my favorite female voices of all time Dusty Springfield. Glen hits the opening note just perfect, then a delay - for some reason, I don't hear that delay in any other version so I am sure it was personalized. Check it out, thanks for the Hello.

I'm 52 and was raised on rock and roll in the 70's-80's. To this day I am a long-haired butt-rocker that blasts Metallica and Tool at the volume of 11. When I heard of Mr. Campbell's diagnosis and subsequent "Goodbye" tour in 2012, I couldn't buy tickets fast enough and drove almost 3 hours (one way) to the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA just to see history in the making. I've seen hundreds of concerts, and that was one of the best ever. Certainly the only one I've ever shed a tear at..... RIP to one of the best we ever had.
There was a special on TV re the Goodbye tour. It was riveting. His wife allowed him to tour until he lost too much of his memory, but man, he still created magic when he played
My wife and I met Glen at the North Phoenix Baptist Church, where he was a member, shortly after we met him we were invited to a pot luck at Alice Coopers house! what wonderful days those were, and what gentle, kind and genuine people they all were! Sometimes I wish we could turn back the clock...Pastor Jackson and the rest were such amazing people. We need a million more like them

In his wife's book, she writes how Jimmy Webb said that Glen was a great singer, so much so that the music studios wanted him to work that angle. Similar to Nat King Cole, who was an exceptional piano player. In his case too the voice was what the studios prized. But it is so apparent that Glen Campbell was an absolute guitar virtuoso. I miss him, he was so talented and utterly unique. RIP
The fact that he picked this clean on a 12-string is mind boggling. I mean, I don’t know why or how he chose to do this. It’s crazy good and shows tremendous skill.
You don't get out much! They are brilliant, but there are many gems in the world of music, but many remain unseen. Glen and Roy would be the first to agree.
Look around on YT, you will find you are grossly mistaken. You might try Tommy Emmanuel, for a starter. And I think you've left a few of the truly magnificent masters out of the list, say one Chet Atkins, to begin.
People don't remember that Glen was a member of The Wrecking Crew in the early 1960's. He played guitar on many massive hits you thought were played by the actual band members. You had to be the best of the best to be in this group of studio musicians.
He was the best of the best of the best. Proof? Word is, he had the biggest house in Los Angeles. Not bad for a guy who started out as a "studio musician."
Glen Campbell was regarded by EVERYONE in Nashville as the best picker bar none. That's a Hamer Ovation Bluebird 12 string. His effortless ability to run up and down the neck is a master class in fret work. I can think of no equals today.
He really made his bones in The Wrecking Crew, the famed collection of LA studio musicians back in the '60s. They could play almost anything in one take, no matter what the style of music.
I remember Glen’s short-lived TV show and I always loved his top 40 hits. But this freaking blew me away! This song means a lot to me, as my mom used to prance a stuffed horse around my crib singing it and later I enjoyed the Lone Ranger tv show. Little known fact: The Lone Ranger is the great uncle of the Green Hornet (who also had an awesome theme song!).
Alice Cooper, a pal of Glen's, once said Eddie Van Halen begged for Cooper to set up a meeting with Campbell for a guitar "lesson". Van Halen was blown away by Campbell.
I've always thought that had to be the highest praise for a performer to have someone from a whole other genre look up to them. It was amazing how people looked up to Chet Atkins. There's a special called "certified guitar picker" and they said people were begging to get on the show.
Usually when he played with the all time great guitarists... of any musical genre.... they would just stop and watch. They knew they were seeing something truly unique and rare. Absolutely phenomenal guitar player
There is a wonderful clip somewhere of him and Roy Clarke on a TV show (probably Glenn's). They were playing together and it was beyond wonderful. And yet (some will toss bricks at me for this), I got the distinct impression that Glenn was holding back a bit. With Roy Frickin' Clark, one of the best ever. He could do it all, he did it all. I believe he made a six figure income as a _studio musician_ at one time before he took off on his own. Think of that one.

I've always liked Glen Campbell and his music. I'm sorry he's gone, but at least he left us the beautiful legacy of his music and videos like this. RIP Glen!
In Sept., 1967, Glen appeared in concert along with Lynn Anderson and Red Foley (the headliner) in Salt Lake City. After the show, I joined Glen and his band and hit a local nightclub. Glen jumped up on the bandstand and jammed with the house band for awhile. After that, we headed for an all-night coffee shop where we stayed until 5:30 in the morning telling jokes and listening to stories. Glen was funny, friendly and a truly great guy to hang out with. God bless and take care of him.

Please let us remember the excellence in this greatest of the greats, Glen Campbell to have done one of the greatest of all, The William Tell Overture with a full orchestra . I heard it once said Glen Campbell would really walk into a recording session and ask to "sit-in" . He truly is a remarkable individual to have hoisted that guitar up onto his back and kept perfect time as he played. I had pulled off a bit of the Foggy Mt. Breakdown on my banjo hoisted up. But, this is a totally different ball game all together. Glen Campbell the greatest.

I recently saw a thing with Alice Cooper where he talks about Glen. Apparently they were really good friends and Alice got Glen to give some guitar lessons to a few well known rock guitarists and teach them some cool stuff. He's one of the greatest guitarists ever and he doesn't get the credit that he most definitely deserves. Love ya Glen ❤❤

If you want to see the entire concert, look up Glen Campbell Live in Sioux Falls, 2001. I’ve loved this man and his music since I was 10 years old. I am 62 now. I remember sitting in front of the TV watching the Goodtime Hour, and being utterly transfixed watching Glen’s hands fly across his various guitars and banjo with such ease. Glen was 65 when he did this concert, his hands still nimble and flying. I felt like I was 10 once more. And yes. I totally agree that he should have received a standing ovation for his William Tell Overture. My jaw about hit the floor when he placed that guitar on his head!! Truly an OMG moment. If I remember correctly, Glen received standing ovations for 3 other songs during this concert - Galveston, Are You Still Within the Sound of My Voice, and MacArthur’s Park. Both Galveston and Mac... Park have awesome guitar solos. Still, he deserved a 4th ovation. His singing voice was as magnificent as his guitar playing. He had the gift of perfect pitch. I never heard him sing a note off-key and his diction, timing and phrasing were flawless. Sometimes it’s like he’s caressing the words as he sings them.

It took me decades to find out how utterly brilliant Glenn Campbell was as a guitarist as I knew him mostly for being a vocalist. I was protecting a record producer back in the eighties and he had a falling out with Glen Campbell. I never talk about clients but in this case, since Glen has passed, I'd like to say that the story I heard from the producer made me really respect Glen Campbell. And yeah, I love his playing.
I told my grandpa I was playing this in band and he showed me this, a truly outstanding guitarist. I feel as if outstanding is an understatement, but I can't think of any other word to describe it.
Saw him at the county fairgrounds in Northern California; and he played 7 or 8 instruments. Not showing off -- Glen Campbell was humbly displaying his talents. WOW factor -- price of admission was very reasonable. Now, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!. Real musician in an outdoor venue; no after market bells and whistles-- just pure skilled & talented charismatic program.
Time is running out for this world ... Much tribulation for it to suffer through, and afterward, a thousand years for those who John 3:3, to enjoy Glenn and Buddy Holly and many who made Jesus their Savior, again ...
There are so many musicians, now, who can't play 1/4 as well as Glen Campbell and Roy Clark, but it's being passed off as great music. I truly appreciate the musicians who helped raise me to the person that I am today. 🇺🇸⚔🇬🇪

Here we go with that typical UA-cam "underrated" nonsense again. Glen Campbell was ANYTHING BUT "underrated". So many of the all time greats don't hesitate to call him one of, or often THE BEST guitarist ever. Alice Cooper just loved hanging out with him... and learning.

People gradually recognized genius of Schubert few decades after his passing. He was underrated by many behind Mozart and Beethoven as they had rich patrons support and rock stars at the time in Vienna. To me Schubert was the greatest composer in history even by sheer volume: over 1,200 pieces of music more than the other two combined. Franco Corelli was underrated tenor because during his peak career did not have the wide media coverage like Pavarotti. As for Campbell, many say he was underrated and few label him as one of the great guitarists. I dare them to be brave and just simply admit he was the greatest guitarist like I am saying.

Glen hits the opening note just perfect, then a delay - for some reason, I don't hear that delay in any other version so I am sure it was personalized. Check it out, thanks for the Hello.

I'm 52 and was raised on rock and roll in the 70's-80's. To this day I am a long-haired butt-rocker that blasts Metallica and Tool at the volume of 11. When I heard of Mr. Campbell's diagnosis and subsequent "Goodbye" tour in 2012, I couldn't buy tickets fast enough and drove almost 3 hours (one way) to the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA just to see history in the making. I've seen hundreds of concerts, and that was one of the best ever. Certainly the only one I've ever shed a tear at..... RIP to one of the best we ever had.
Goes to show, your appearance really has nothing to do with what you listen to.
There was a special on TV re the Goodbye tour. It was riveting. His wife allowed him to tour until he lost too much of his memory, but man, he still created magic when he played

My wife and I met Glen at the North Phoenix Baptist Church, where he was a member, shortly after we met him we were invited to a pot luck at Alice Coopers house! what wonderful days those were, and what gentle, kind and genuine people they all were! Sometimes I wish we could turn back the clock...Pastor Jackson and the rest were such amazing people.

In his wife's book, she writes how Jimmy Webb said that Glen was a great singer, so much so that the music studios wanted him to work that angle. Similar to Nat King Cole, who was an exceptional piano player. In his case too the voice was what the studios prized. But it is so apparent that Glen Campbell was an absolute guitar virtuoso. I miss him, he was so talented and utterly unique. RIP

Look around on YT, you will find you are grossly mistaken. You might try Tommy Emmanuel, for a starter. And I think you've left a few of the truly magnificent masters out of the list, say one Chet Atkins, to begin.
People don't remember that Glen was a member of The Wrecking Crew in the early 1960's. He played guitar on many massive hits you thought were played by the actual band members. You had to be the best of the best to be in this group of studio musicians.
Did not realize what a great musician he was. Nobody compares to him.

Glen Campbell was regarded by EVERYONE in Nashville as the best picker bar none. That's a Hamer Ovation Bluebird 12 string. His effortless ability to run up and down the neck is a master class in fret work. I can think of no equals today.
You gotta be good to get a TV variety show. So sorry, but Roy Clark was the master.
He really made his bones in The Wrecking Crew, the famed collection of LA studio musicians back in the '60s. They could play almost anything in one take, no matter what the style of music.

I remember Glen’s short-lived TV show and I always loved his top 40 hits. But this freaking blew me away! This song means a lot to me, as my mom used to prance a stuffed horse around my crib singing it and later I enjoyed the Lone Ranger tv show.
Little known fact: The Lone Ranger is the great uncle of the Green Hornet (who also had an awesome theme song!).
He had a beautiful voice! Loved his songs and his TV show. RIP.
Alice Cooper, a pal of Glen's, once said Eddie Van Halen begged for Cooper to set up a meeting with Campbell for a guitar "lesson". Van Halen was blown away by Campbell.

I've always thought that had to be the highest praise for a performer to have someone from a whole other genre look up to them. It was amazing how people looked up to Chet Atkins. There's a special called "certified guitar picker" and they said people were begging to get on the show.

There is a wonderful clip somewhere of him and Roy Clarke on a TV show (probably Glenn's). They were playing together and it was beyond wonderful.
And yet (some will toss bricks at me for this), I got the distinct impression that Glenn was holding back a bit.

He could do it all, he did it all. I believe he made a six figure income as a _studio musician_ at one time before he took off on his own. Think of that one.

In Sept., 1967, Glen appeared in concert along with Lynn Anderson and Red Foley (the headliner) in Salt Lake City. After the show, I joined Glen and his band and hit a local nightclub. Glen jumped up on the bandstand and jammed with the house band for awhile. After that, we headed for an all-night coffee shop where we stayed until 5:30 in the morning telling jokes and listening to stories. Glen was funny, friendly and a truly great guy to hang out with. God bless and take care of him.

I heard it once said Glen Campbell would really walk into a recording session and ask to "sit-in" . He truly is a remarkable individual to have hoisted that guitar up onto his back and kept perfect time as he played. I had pulled off a bit of the Foggy Mt. Breakdown on my banjo hoisted up. But, this is a totally different ball game all together. Glen Campbell the greatest.

I recently saw a thing with Alice Cooper where he talks about Glen. Apparently they were really good friends and Alice got Glen to give some guitar lessons to a few well known rock guitarists and teach them some cool stuff. He's one of the greatest guitarists ever and he doesn't get the credit that he most definitely deserves. Love ya Glen ❤❤

If you want to see the entire concert, look up Glen Campbell Live in Sioux Falls, 2001. I’ve loved this man and his music since I was 10 years old. I am 62 now. I remember sitting in front of the TV watching the Goodtime Hour, and being utterly transfixed watching Glen’s hands fly across his various guitars and banjo with such ease. Glen was 65 when he did this concert, his hands still nimble and flying. I felt like I was 10 once more. And yes. I totally agree that he should have received a standing ovation for his William Tell Overture. My jaw about hit the floor when he placed that guitar on his head!! Truly an OMG moment. If I remember correctly, Glen received standing ovations for 3 other songs during this concert - Galveston, Are You Still Within the Sound of My Voice, and MacArthur’s Park. Both Galveston and Mac... Park have awesome guitar solos. Still, he deserved a 4th ovation. His singing voice was as magnificent as his guitar playing. He had the gift of perfect pitch. I never heard him sing a note off-key and his diction, timing and phrasing were flawless. Sometimes it’s like he’s caressing the words as he sings them.

I was protecting a record producer back in the eighties and he had a falling out with Glen Campbell. I never talk about clients but in this case, since Glen has passed, I'd like to say that the story I heard from the producer made me really respect Glen Campbell. And yeah, I love his playing.

I told my grandpa I was playing this in band and he showed me this, a truly outstanding guitarist. I feel as if outstanding is an understatement, but I can't think of any other word to describe it.

Saw him at the county fairgrounds in Northern California; and he played 7 or 8 instruments. Not showing off -- Glen Campbell was humbly displaying his talents. WOW factor -- price of admission was very reasonable. Now, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!. Real musician in an outdoor venue; no after market bells and whistles-- just pure skilled & talented charismatic program.
The world truly lost an amazing talent when we lost this man.
Time is running out for this world ... Much tribulation for it to suffer through, and afterward, a thousand years for those who John 3:3, to enjoy Glenn and Buddy Holly and many who made Jesus their Savior, again ...
