Country music has had a number of superb guitarists over the years. From Chet Atkins to Roy Clark the masters abound in country. But Campbell's mastery was unique in his ability to play in front of any audience, regardless the genre and sound as if he owned the music. From playing classical music with a full orchestra to picking and grinning with the guys at the saturday night hoedown Glen was as at home as one could be. Country called him our own, but he was as masterful with Beethoven as he was bluegrass. We'll not see his like again.
@@lindamcooper1 His father and uncle gave him his first and only real instruction. They weren't virtuosi, but they were good enough players to start Glen in the right direction toward real brilliance. Really Glen just got rudimentary instruction from his family members...Glen did all the real schooling to himself. He was a natural born genius musician.
This is so awesome. Like others, I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face not only for this performance but because of so many fond memories from my childhood. Beautiful.
Campbell did a summer replacement show for The Smothers Brothers. It was so well received he got his own show for three years. Here he's playing a song written by one of the writers on the Smothers Brothers show, Mason Williams. The song reached #1 in 1969 and received three Grammys. Glen plays it like the pro he is!
Wow Have always known Glen Campbell as an Iconic Country & Western Singer and yet here he is playing a master piece Classical Gas..totally awesome ❤️❤️
My father introduced me to Glen Campbell's music when I was a child in the 70s. I wish I had appreciated his music more at that time, the man was a virtuoso. RIP Glen
How many people realise that Glen couldnt read music ? He heard music and ingested it, then played it perfectly and that was the mark of his real genius. The man also had a particular grace about him, his natural humility and easy going personality enabled others to warm to him in any setting. To witness him operate a 12 string Guitar with a surgeons finesse was a marvel never to be forgotten.
When I first saw this song performed in 1968 on The Smothers Brothers Hour television show, I was "hooked" on its sound and beauty. Over the years it has held its rank as one of the best scores ever written. "Bravo" to Glen Campbell in his performance of this classic and his outstanding talent to perform it... to perfection.
Awesome!! Glen was such a great guitarist as well as singer. Never missed one of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour shows along with the many talents back then.....Where oh where has good music gone? Missing those days......RIP Glen!
+v irgil schmoe Perhaps not recently, but in the late 60s & early 70s he was a star. He had several hit records and his own TV show, and has also won several Grammy's. In the late 70s - early 80s, struggles in his personal life and a rapidly changing music scene unfortunately took a toll on his musical output, but he remains a true legend and icon to those who remember him.
I had the great good fortune to see him a couple times just kickin' it with friends at the Palomino and Silver Slipper. Like so many great performers he had the joy.
It's so generous of him to play with an orchestra and give people the wonderful music. I think he just enjoyed playing music with other people and was really really great at it.
Agreed. There's clips of them playing together -- pure gold. Find them if you haven't. But the amazing thing is that Roy always seems to be working much harder at it than Glenn. Now, that in itself is amazing. I mean, c'mon -- it's Roy Clark. That's otherworldly.
It must have been quite a surprise to Glen's doctor when he was born and he came out holding a guitar. He was truly one of the best guitar players of all time. RIP Glenn.
Around February 1969 I had 2 months left in Vietnam and was just a bit worn. Classical Gas came on and was so refreshing. I hope to remember that forever. I'm 76 and love hearing it.
Just listening in 2017, my dad remembering 1975 and telling me about it, joyous, and the unfettered talent of Mr Campbell who I believe was a nice man to boot.

I miss Glen to the core of my soul. He always shared his musical gifts and talent with us, with the greatest of joy and giving that any human could muster. Rest In Peace my dear friend Glen. Clearly, this is one of the most wonderful demonstrations of Glen's resounding guitar genius, and with one of the finest Philharmonic Orchestras in our great nation, the South Dakota Symphony. Yes, in this great rendition of Mason William's magnificent song; "Classical Gas", just listening to the power leaves anyone positively transformed. I wish I had the opportunity to have been present that night in Sioux Falls in 2001. Imagine, if you will, such musical beauty, and it is so difficult to believe it was the same year as the tragedy of 911. Glen was one of the bravest men I know. I listened carefully to the words of his lovely daughter Ashley, as she described how she and her brothers guided her dear father while he performed his magic on stage, well into his battle with Alzheimer's Disease. One day medical science will conquer that horrible disease, Alzheimer's, and Glen's suffering will not have been in vain. I have lost a family member to it. Another great gift of Glen's was his bravery in showing the world how to stand tall in the face of a terrible illness, and to do so with the greatest of dignity. Mr. Campbell, I salute you, as you look down upon us all, be safe my friend, on the Wichita Line. Thank you Sir, play and serenade all those who rest peacefully in heaven. - Joe Shalmoni, Los Angeles, CA

From playing classical music with a full orchestra to picking and grinning with the guys at the saturday night hoedown Glen was as at home as one could be. Country called him our own, but he was as masterful with Beethoven as he was bluegrass. We'll not see his like again.
Tom Swinburn his version of the William Tell Overture’s finale was just fantastic. It’s hard to describe without hearing it.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that he was self taught!!
@@marciadiehl5733 And all before UA-cam and the internet
Only others in his orbit were Danny Hatton from waldorf, Md and Roy Clark davidsonville, MD. They were that good also.
This is so awesome. Like others, I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face not only for this performance but because of so many fond memories from my childhood. Beautiful.
This is one of the BEST recordings EVER!
Glen Campbell --- a true classic!
The Man was truly a Master at his craft , Thank You Glen Campbell it was a pleasure !!!!!!!!!!!
Such a difficult song to get right yet he made it look easy....what a talent....RIP
And he even added his own flair to it - amazing
And then go hear Tommy Emanuel s version mind blowing
R.I.P Mr. Campbell
It's an instrumental NOT a song.
Some of our greatest musicians couldn’t read music! It’s what’s in the heart and soul!!!!!
When you make guitar play look easy and effortless you've mastered the instrument. Glen, what a legend..a true master. RIP legend.
I have played this song over 100 times and never get tired of hearing this great song and performance by Glen Campbell.
A class act. Thanks Glenn.
Glen!
You're welcome.
One of the all time greats. Who couldn't love him?
Glen was an underestimated guitarist by some but highly revered by others that knew him and his incredible talent! A class act for sure. R.I.P.!
Magnificently talented human being. RIP Glen, thanks for the music. 🇨🇦😊
YES!!!
Hi Ashleigh, how are you doing
Man, I'd forgotten what a complicated piece of music Classical Gas is! Still one of my favorite instrumentals of all time! :-D
You should have heard Jim Stafford take it on... he killed it too. We toured with Jim for a lot of 1991.
There is a song on Mason Williams Classical Gas album called the "Moose Goosers." You need to hear it!
I remember seeing Mason play it on TV, with a plexiglass guitar with water and Goldfish inside it! 😂
Glenn could play anything and make it magical, what a talent.
Yes indeed! MASON WILLIAMS!
If there was a theme song for my life, I’d choose this❤❤❤
Awesome!! Glen was such a great guitarist as well as singer. Never missed one of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour shows along with the many talents back then.....Where oh where has good music gone? Missing those days......RIP Glen!
Hi Marilyn, how are you doing
The man never got the recognition he deserved,,
yeah he did.
he was as big as any popstar of today back in HIS day.
+v irgil schmoe
Perhaps not recently, but in the late 60s & early 70s he was a star. He had several hit records and his own TV show, and has also won several Grammy's. In the late 70s - early 80s, struggles in his personal life and a rapidly changing music scene unfortunately took a toll on his musical output, but he remains a true legend and icon to those who remember him.
He had MASSIVE respect among his peers.
u are so right he was great!!!!!!!
I had the great good fortune to see him a couple times just kickin' it with friends at the Palomino and Silver Slipper. Like so many great performers he had the joy.
He stands tall with all the legends....
Absolutely Brilliant..... And a wonderful human being......
Me as well. The most beautiful Classic Gas I have ever heard. God Bless u Glen. In rock and roll heaven!!🙏💋
How could anyone NOT like anything Glen Campbell did! He was the best singer and guitarist in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Lisa, how are you doing
It's so generous of him to play with an orchestra and give people the wonderful music. I think he just enjoyed playing music with other people and was really really great at it.
Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark ... two of my favourite guitarists ... Glenn showing his mastery of the instrument here
Two greatest guitarists ever....period
Agreed. There's clips of them playing together -- pure gold. Find them if you haven't. But the amazing thing is that Roy always seems to be working much harder at it than Glenn.
Now, that in itself is amazing. I mean, c'mon -- it's Roy Clark. That's otherworldly.
I have always been a fan of Mr. Campbell. I listen to greatest hits collection of his sounds regularly. Great all around musician.
Love Glen Campbell, started as a session player, then went solo. So talented.
A great entertainer, and an absolute monster on the guitar. Rock and roll guitar greats will tell you how brilliant he was.
Prince named Glen the best guitarist of all time.
I really had no idea what an accomplished musician Glenn Campbell was. What an awesome performance of Mason Williams' wonderful composition.
It must have been quite a surprise to Glen's doctor when he was born and he came out holding a guitar. He was truly one of the best guitar players of all time. RIP Glenn.
@klr vlr It's not her horror I wouldn't want to imagine, think about BIRTHING a guitar! I mean the mechanics of it.
Yep, Glen Campbell was one of a kind. I am really grateful for what the man left us...
Around February 1969 I had 2 months left in Vietnam and was just a bit worn. Classical Gas came on and was so refreshing. I hope to remember that forever. I'm 76 and love hearing it.
Thank you sir, for your service.
I had tears too!!
I always loved this instrumental song from the first time I heard it. Glenn Campbell RIP 🙏
Hello Clarke, how are you doing?
One of the Greatest Rock legends, he maybe gone but he still lives through his music and in our hearts.
I never knew Glen Campbell was such a good guitarist. The backing by the orchestra is amazing.
Glen Campbell did the opening lick to The Beach Boys “Fun Fun Fun”.
Glen was a studio musician with the famous "Wrecking Crew" before he found stardom.
What rock do you live under?
@@SAGENATOR1 Hey, a LOT of people have no idea about Glen Campbell, nor any idea what it takes to be a session musician.
Give a listen to him playing the William Tell Overture (Lone Ranger theme song). It'll blow your socks off.
One of the best guitarists ever! RIP!
One of my favourite instrumental songs of all time. Man Glen really does make it sound Classical....
Hi Laura, how are you doing
I could sit and listen to Glen Campbell all day everyday a brilliant singer and an equally 1st class musician
How do all these great musicians NOT get chills when they hear themselves ?!
Just listening in 2017, my dad remembering 1975 and telling me about it, joyous, and the unfettered talent of Mr Campbell who I believe was a nice man to boot.
We already miss Glen but for generations to come Glen Campbell's genius can be heard,, and it will be. God rest your soul Glen Campbell, you had a turbulent off stage life for years BUT you never let your fans down and you made your peace with God.Thankyou!
Check out the Alice Cooper interview...
My Dad loved Glen Campbell's music. Every time I hear "Galveston', it makes me cry because I think of Dad. He passed away at 75, 8 weeks after Glen Campbell.
Fantastic! I still get chills watching this.

Great post, Joe.
Everyone else lightly fingerpicks through this piece. He digs in with authority!!
Great player. RIP
One of my first Guitar Heroes
One of the best EVER!!.. Performing Mason Williams' Grammy Award winning classic "Classical Gas" Outstanding!!! 👏👏👏🎉🎉
Always love to hear Glen Campbell play.
He could put 4 strings on a shovel and get a tune out of it ! RIP Maestro.
I will miss Glen, he was great in any thing he did!
So well put together everyone totally in sync! I can never get tired of this song
Stunning guitarist singer and a great gentleman, he's the real deal 💯🎸✌️💙
I loved Glenn Campbell . He was a delightful entertainer taken too soon . He was a genius . I can’t wait to see him on the other side.
Great song. Even more so each and everyone in this video. Amazing talent. Just enjoy it!
Damn, sitting here, flipping on my chair, hearing his guitar, the other instruments. Am i in heaven? I just can't stop listening. repeat, repeat, repeat. Thank you, fabulous Mister Glen Campell/ Mason Williams.
This man was a very accomplished singer in so many ways. He was a musician’s musician.
I highly recommend, to anyone who enjoyed this clip, to read Glenn Campbell's backstory, his history or his bio. He was a STAR before his name was known. He was an amazing man working with scores and scores of famous name and working as a full time session musician. I loved his work ethic and his music. R.I.P. Glenn.
Great stuff. Talent from everyone playing
When you factor in his guitar playing AND his voice , and what he can bring to every song he performs , I am struggling to find anyone that can match this guy ... EVER !!!
I AGREE DEE...TY
He was the best!!!
naja...da würden mir schon einige einfallen...
*Dee L* Perhaps only Jerry Reed.
Was there anything this man couldn’t play?! Brilliant version of Classical Gas, with his own inimitable twist on it, throws a few ‘licks’ in here and there as only GC could! An absolute treat, thanks for posting
He can’t/couldn’t play a crappy plastic grade school recorder. No one can. Why do they still kill generation after generation of potential musical talent with those damn things?
@@CorePathway I’m afraid that’s one of those mysteries we might never find an answer to
Glen Campbell is the finest guitar player I have ever heard. I am sad that I will never get to see him live.
Loved Glenn Campbell when I was growing up in the '60s and '70s. My nostalgia for that time now gives me newfound sympathy for old folks who always talked about the good old days when I was a kid.
Just came across this.... One of my favourite pieces of music. This cover is absolutely fantastic. Glenn Campbell had so many talents that went unrecognised....
Hi Liz, how are you
Glen was the only one without a sheet of music in front of him! He is doing it all from his memory. We will miss you.
my wife found recently that he did not use sheet music cause he couldn't read it.
That's how you know incredible talent. They can just hear a song a few times, and then play it- note for note.
SO BEAUTIFULLY PLAYED..💕
Hi Marlene, how are you doing today
