As amazing as Glen Campbell's being a member of The Wrecking Crew and sometimes recording on 3 different hit songs in the 50's/60's in 3 different studios in a day's time (18 hours), it pales in comparison to his battle with Alzheimers. Even though in his final years he would forget words to one of his songs, forget his childrens' names or his wife's name, up until the end he retained his guitar playing ability. Somehow the part of the brain that stores those memories were last affected by the horrible disease of Alzheimers. The special Glen Campbell did on Alzheimers was eye opening and a chance to hear Glen play his guitar so beautifully and effortlessly.
When he was a sessions player I still am amazed by the great name of their crew"Wrecking Crew", all I can say now is that he was a true artist musically!!Fil you did your homework and laid out some very important things for us to look for, I just love music period-♡
Great Review, my ex wife and I saw Glen at the Hollywood Bowl, I'm a drummer, she plays guitar, we were blown away, at one point I looked over at her and tears were rolling down her cheeks
I recently saw Glen being in London I believe and the interviewer said that Glen was one of if not the best player. Glen, naturally, said not the best, but the most versatile player. Because he played on so many sessions with the Wrecking Crew from Elvis to Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra he was able to play every genre music. He said he could play Hendrix, etc better than they could play themselves. To me, he is up at the very top in my opinion. Best is hard to measure and define. But, nobody, but nobody was better than Glen!
I’ll certainly agree with you on that. When Glen Campbell left us, I heard it said of him that either his guitar playing or his vocals ALONE warranted his induction into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. To have both of those in ONE performer is incredible.
You definitely know your guitar. And thanks for showing the best of the best. You cover all the bases with your critique and giving credit to players I never thought you ever heard of. Excellent job
And he did that on a 12 string. Dude was such a phenomenal player and those old school country players and entertainers can't be touched. Rest easy brother.
You know it's funny but just about an hour ago I watched an interview with Alice Cooper where he talks about the talent and how much of a standup guy that Glen Campbell was.
He certainly was. What a privilege to witness such guitar mastery in action and to know that he also possessed a wonderful voice that could sing anything and also be so humble about his fantastic musical talents. Thanks for such marvellous memories Glen, your musical legacy will always be greatly admired and never forgotten. RIP Glen.
Especially when he couldn't read music. When he worked with the wrecking crew, the other players would go through a song once, and he would pick it up.
The Rhinestone Cowboy brought me here. The song just popped in my head randomly. I probably haven't heard it for 20 years, but there it was so I listened to that and saw the thumbnail for Phil's analysis so naturally I have to check it out...great analysis.
I remember many years ago being involved in a Glenn Campbell show - I was doing monitors and we had been advised the plane was late. No cancellation of the show just yet though - still hoping the 'SHOW WOULD GO ON" (sorry bit of pink floyd ism there). Well to get to the punchline he and the band (the touring part - there was a local contingent of conservatorium players - all good muso's) arrived with 10 minutes to spare - so no soundcheck - and proceeded to spank us all with his talent. This all happened in the remotest city of the world - Perth, Western Australia. Awesome.
You have a very lovely style. I really enjoyed listening to you. You are very respectful. Thanks. Love Glen Campbell! I saw him perform at the fair, once. He kept changing instruments. He played each beautifully. Then, when he brought out the bagpipes, he said, "I know you all are thinking there is no beginning to this man's talent!" What a great guy! That was the best concert, ever!!
Fritz Kay thanks my friend, it does have that resemblance with the headstock and I know glen was big with ovation. Thanks for setting me straight brother
Always enjoy your stuff. Besides the smart commentary, you pick a lot of my fav guys that I’m glad youngsters like you are listening to. Plus you know what you’re hearing. Rave on, from a colonist.
Once again i am commenting on your show.you are showing guitar players younger people who would have no idea who you are talking about.your enthusiasm is fantastic!! Thank you!
Alice Cooper gave an interview after Glen passed, talking about what good friends they were, golf buddies and all. He told of being approached by Eddy VanHalen who asked Alice if he could please see about getting Ed a picking lesson from Glen.
I really enjoyed watching the Alice Cooper interview. Never was a big fan of his music, but I have a lot of respect for the man as a person. I would have loved playing a round of golf with both of them.
Glen Campbell was one of those guys that you can’t be jealous of, killer guitarist, amazing singer, great actor, genuine nice guy but was so humble, you just can’t be jealous of him.
The list of musical legends who couldn’t read sheet music is impressive. Jimi, Clapton, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, EVH, Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Robert Johnson, SRV, Tommy Emmanuel, and many more
@@keef7224 This statement is not accurate. EVH for example was a classically trained pianist. Often times, a when a guitarist says they cannot "read" music, essentially meaning they do not sight-read well as say, a violinist might.
@@hugedoof “When asked by Guitar World if his piano training transferred to the guitar, he replied that it had, “but in a very subliminal way. Because I never learned how to read, really; I used to fool the teacher. I did it all by ear.”- EVH
I love these videos. I know nothing about guitar playing. These videos break down the techniques so well. The host helps us appreciate how intricate it is. Impressive knowledge and talent.
Glen Campbell - oh my god, where do you start. So underrated yet insanely naturally talented. A joy to watch and listen to. He was an acoustic genius AND basically a total bad-ass shredder! And that voice too. Thanks for this video, so great that people still get to hear about these people who were stratospherically talented
So glad I found your channel. Love that you have commented on some of the greats I grew up listening to. My favorite song of Glenn's is Wichita Lineman, still makes me tear up to this day.
Wings Of Pegasus, I admire your expertise on the guitar! You are ultra knowledgeable. I love how you love music and guitars. Keep these videos coming for people like me who are clueless about what is happening with the fretboard, picking hand and instrument controls while a guitarist plays. Thank you so much. Your videos are needed, useful and appreciated!
Yes, in an interview, after Glenn’s death, Alice Cooper said that Glenn was easily among the top five all time guitarist and that Eddie Van Halen had ask him if he could arrange a lesson! WOW
Glen Campbell and Roy Clark were the two Original shredders. Just imagine if they played thru effect pedals instead of clean what it would’ve sounded like. It’s amazing playing clean. Campbell is one of my Guitar Hero’s and a huge influence on my playing.
😮 I have never seen this before. He was another one I heard around the house growing up...but didn't understand how really talented he was until recently. THANK YOU!
Fil (sorry for misspelling your name previously) - this is awesome. I am an addict to your reviews of these epic performances - and thank you, thank you, thank you for featuring the late, beloved Glen Campbell. He had so much natural talent and amply demonstrated his gratefulness by applying hard work to maximize it. And his love of entertaining people! Always and inspiration - as are you, my friend. - RC
What a wonderful tribute to a musician that was in many cases underappreciated for his amazing talent. I was shocked to hear him do this on a 12 string and kept thinking he can't have all the strings in place.
Mate. I'm one of those people who thought of Glen as a country singer. Didn't know about his guitar picking, session work etc...one of the really good things about the internet. As a bedroom hack really appreciate the analysis as well as the exposition.
I love that you show respect to these "old guys," that you recognize real talent when you see it. I'm no great fan of Glen, but I do realize how incredibly talented he was. I've tried playing a twelve string. So hard to do! That a young man such as you see it gives me hope about our future.
Second the motion on your versatility in appreciating talent no matter the genre. I just started watching your videos yesterday. I'm hooked! Thank you!
I never played guitar, or any other instrument, save for some trumpet lessons. However, just listening to, and watching such artists as Glen, makes clear how hard work, practice and God given talent will make you the best at your craft. To watch his hands and fingers move with such precision is awe inspiring. You really NEED to watch and listen to the performance several times to fully appreciate the few minutes of pure nirvana. RIP, Glen. Jamming in the hereafter with Roy and the rest.
You will never, ever see a "thumbs down" when it comes to Glen Campbell. A true virtuoso. I was fortunate to grow up in the 60's and hear his music come over 77 WABC New York, New York. Great memories when popular music showed true talent. Thank you, Mr. Glen Campbell. You are missed...but we will always have "Wichita Lineman" and all the greats.
I have just discovered your channel and I am in awe of the job you are doing. I am a musical illiterate and I love this video as well as the one you did on Glen Campbell and Roy Clark. I had the great honor, about 15 years ago, of acting in a commercial that Glen did for a set of his DVD's. So you had the great Glen Campbell and about 25 would be actors who were playing the role of audience. One might think that Glen might do his performance part of the show and keep to himself the rest of the time. Not so. He mingled with all of us as if we were his friends and neighbors. I was so very impressed with the human side of this great hugely talented artist.
The last few days, I've been burning through your videos on these old, classic country pickers and I love it. So many reaction videos stick to the usual cast of players, but there is so much to learn from some of these guys. I'm forever in awe of what these guys did while being almost crystal clean. So many effects in a live performance can hide a multitude of errors and slop, but doing something like this while clean is beyond impressive. I am so thankful to see you giving these guys their due - so much talent and so much showmanship. There's a lot to learn from this stuff.
Thanks Brad! Yeah it seems like the reaction thing is just people chasing views and only featuring the big names. Whereas there's a hell of a lot of lesser known great players people should know about!
Keep in mind that Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark didn't have youtube or Blockbuster to spend hours reviewing DVD's or videos of the skills of musicians and freeze an imagine to see finger position . The normal TV didn't come out until Philo Farnsworth solved to progressive scan issue to have animation on the screen in 1928 . Philo was born in 1906 and invented the TV that came out in 1929 but the 1 TV Station in New Jersey ran Operas for the rich that had the money to buy sets. Country musicians learned from watching local players or stage shows at Fairs and Theatres . A local movie house didn't run Films on how to learn the guitar while the Country Western movies with heroes singing and playing guitars were sound tracks and long shots tough to see and even worse from the 20th row . You're lucky to have access to the Global market for videos based on the Films via Kinescope where Studio monitors had a Camera on them to film it and ship copies around the nation . Even in 1946 when Glen was 10 and Roy was 13 , the post War era in the USA had just over 6000 private TV sets in the Homes until genius Comic's from Vaudville or movies got TV shows in 1948 where they helped sell TV's because in 1952 the USA now had about 22,000,000 . Mail-order guitars came with Books , picks and stings but Companies couldn't include a bottle Talent or magic Gene Autry jacket to play just like him or like Hank Willaims. The new AMPEX 2" video tape system came out in 1956 for TV recordings or to have a guest pre-record the song and insert during the show . But the machines cost $50,000.00 with ZERO Video tape Stores to rent an Episode. It's said that to play a piano at a Concert Hall level takes 10,000 hours of scales , actual tunes, and hand eye co-ordination . You can use the Internet to learn from home and not travel the country side or be caught in the rain. Practice and styles only make you good enough to start playing gigs to get yor name out there , connecting with people to know what the crowd wants can't be taught .
Amazing. Thanks again Fil; it's really due to your interesting analyses of these musicians, that I am listening to completely different genres and learning so much. It's been great. Killer guitarist - what an exceptional talent. I have also been watching interviews with Glen and in one he says, he never considered himself a country musician, more of an all round musician. Really just one of best.
Glad to see your reviewing these country cats. Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark and we can't forget Merle Travis are the originators of these different styles of guitar playing.

One of the best guitarists of all time. Such a talented man!
I remember Carol Kaye, the phenomenal bass player, commenting on how great a guitarist Glen was, high praise indeed.
You definitely know your guitar. And thanks for showing the best of the best. You cover all the bases with your critique and giving credit to players I never thought you ever heard of. Excellent job
As an 'old-timer', I just dig that you get it. Thank you Fil. I love what you are doing.
Your enthusiasm is so refreshing.. To see you acknowledge Glen Campbells prowess on the guitar is priceless. Thank you so very much.
And he did that on a 12 string. Dude was such a phenomenal player and those old school country players and entertainers can't be touched. Rest easy brother.
Another Great assessment of truly one of the greats of all time!!! Keep up the top notch Reviews!!!
His great friend Alice Cooper said Glen was one of the five greatest guitarists of all time.
Alice Cooper said that Eddie van Halen wanted a lesson from Glen Campbell. Have a look at "Interview with Alice Cooper on late musician Glen Campbell"
Totally agree
They golfed together weekly. They were good buddies.
You know it's funny but just about an hour ago I watched an interview with Alice Cooper where he talks about the talent and how much of a standup guy that Glen Campbell was.
Just more proof that Glen wasn't good--he was EXCEPTIONAL!
👍
He certainly was. What a privilege to witness such guitar mastery in action and to know that he also possessed a wonderful voice that could sing anything and also be so humble about his fantastic musical talents. Thanks for such marvellous memories Glen, your musical legacy will always be greatly admired and never forgotten. RIP Glen.
Monica Minyard the Wichita lineman is still on the line!
Especially when he couldn't read music. When he worked with the wrecking crew, the other players would go through a song once, and he would pick it up.
@@wingsofpegasus between Glenn and Roy, who is better?!
Thanks so much for taking the time to appreciate some gentlemen who are no longer with us, but they'll never be forgotten.
No problem!
I just adore Glen. Another talent I grew up with and so GRATEFUL TO BE ALIVE DURING THIS TIME.
The Rhinestone Cowboy brought me here. The song just popped in my head randomly. I probably haven't heard it for 20 years, but there it was so I listened to that and saw the thumbnail for Phil's analysis so naturally I have to check it out...great analysis.
Fil - I've watched this analysis a few times and I never get tired of listening to you break it all down. Just love it!
Awesome.
Cool!
Great story. The real pros went by the rule, no matter what, the show must go on.
Can we please spell the man’s name right...it’s Glen with one ‘n’. Sheesh!
@@brendadavis140 yeah its Glenn Jeesh , not Campbell's. Lol
Glenn's speed picking skills were amazing. One of the earliest shredders. Fantastic musician extraordinaire!
You are great at exposing talent in its purest form, thank you for that.
As far as speed goes Glenn was right there with Les Paul, Van Halen, SRV... He was in the Wrecking Crew for a reason.
I can watch this a hundred times in a row and never be tired of it. Pure magic !
Is my man shredding on a 12 string Ovation? Electric? Glen is a MONSTER!! Rock on Fil!
👍
terry miller that was a hamer 12 string.
That was a hamer 12 string.
Sorry my friend that was him on his ovation blue bird. The hamer 12 came later.
Thank you!
No problem!
What I appreciate and enjoy about your videos is how much you respect the talent of these guys. I enjoy watching you watch them
Thanks David!
Alice Cooper gave an interview after Glen passed, talking about what good friends they were, golf buddies and all. He told of being approached by Eddy VanHalen who asked Alice if he could please see about getting Ed a picking lesson from Glen.
Yeah!
I really enjoyed watching the Alice Cooper interview. Never was a big fan of his music, but I have a lot of respect for the man as a person. I would have loved playing a round of golf with both of them.
I've heard that story. I believe it. He was just that talented. 🎸
Was that the interview with.Greg Laurie?
Glen Campbell was one of those guys that you can’t be jealous of, killer guitarist, amazing singer, great actor, genuine nice guy but was so humble, you just can’t be jealous of him.
And this is a guy that never learned to read music either. Such a talented musician.
The list of musical
legends who couldn’t read sheet music is impressive.
Amazing, absolutely amazing. Thank you for acquainting me with this awesome performance.
really cool channel. i play drums and respect those that look back in awe at the sheer talent some had before the advent of tech.
And on a 12 string! Unreal! Thanks for this one!
Yeah it's crazy!
Being a humble 12string guitarist myself I do appreciate your remarks, Fil, on Glen's superb playing on such a guitar
Some people are just born with a special talent and unending work ethic. Thank you for finding and explaining this work of art.
That was an awesome performance! Thanks for sharing Fil!
Oh my stars, 12 string electric, fret playing, string strumming and picking, amazing. The man could play and on top of his head. Good lawd 💜
👍
Did you mean, " oh my stars and bars', ?
Love your great admiration for this country cross-over artist and your articulation of his style and his performance.
Thanks for putting this up, I never knew how good Glen was! only remembered him for Rhinestone Cowboy....I’m schooled.
Thanks, Fil, for showing how great Glen was. Enjoy your videos about these great musician's great job....
INCREDIBLE! One of a kind & sorely missed, RIP Glen Campbell.
Epic performance! Wish I had a appreciated him as a performer a lot sooner. R.I.P. Glen
Amen.
So glad I found your channel. Love that you have commented on some of the greats I grew up listening to.
My favorite song of Glenn's is Wichita Lineman, still makes me tear up to this day.
Thanks for this, I'm not a guitar player, but I always enjoy your analysis of particular artists/tunes.
That's why Eddie Van Halen wanted lessons from him.
👍
I didn't know that, which is interesting.
Wow I did not know that fact.,
MAN HE COULD IT ALL.THANK YOU FIL FOR REMEMBERING HIM
No problem!
😮 I have never seen this before. He was another one I heard around the house growing up...but didn't understand how really talented he was until recently. THANK YOU!
Love the way you explain things.Great job.
Thanks!
- RC
Thanks!
Thanks!
Always provide great background and education of the instrument plus get to view an awesome video. Thank you!!🎶🎶🎶🎸
Second the motion on your versatility in appreciating talent no matter the genre. I just started watching your videos yesterday. I'm hooked! Thank you!
Thanks! No problem!
I saw him at Branson, Missouri at least 10 times and he played this every time and it was always perfect.
BRILLIANT. What else is there to say! Thanks Fil!
Cool!
Practice and styles only make you good enough to start playing gigs
to get yor name out there , connecting with people to know what the crowd wants can't be taught .
One of Mr. Campbell's many, many outstanding performances. Thank You for for you reaction to his playing, great video, both of them!
No problem!
This song is William Teel-Overture. Or, as we Americans call it: The Lone Ranger Song
😃 for sure. Theme song in movies, cartoons, back in the day. Fun.
Tell not Teel
Phenomenal! Never seen this before, thanks for sharing Fil! ❤️
I love how much you pick up. I often end up watching the performance again with more enjoyment based on your insights.
my dad, him, roy clark, and buck owens were my favorites growing up.
👍
Glad to see your reviewing these country cats. Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark and we can't forget Merle Travis are the originators of these different styles of guitar playing.
👍
Yeah, so many greats! I'd like to give a shout out to a few more, Scotty Moore, Billy Byrd, Hank Garland, Doc Watson, Leon Rhodes, and Grady Martin.
To pay tribute to a great musician ( Glen Campbell ) shows me what a classy person you are, thanks for making this video.
My father was a HUGE country music fan; he was a trucker who had country music playing in his cab at all times. He took me to see Glen Campbell, and his playing and singing were staggering! Thanks Dad, and rest in peace old man!!
Love your channel, Fil!! Keep up the great work!!
I love what i learn from you!!! You make music a richer experience
...thx Phil ....love Glenn Campbell ...whether it be solo ...or his work with the Wrecking Crew....or Sinatra ....or the Beach Boys ! .....hate these great musicians are dropping like flies ....but thank you again Phil for helping to keep these great players on the map ....cheers 🍷🍷

As a kid I never appreciated glen, I am blown away at his abilities on guitar. Unmatched by anybody today
I was under three while watching his show on TV, but I used to tell people at our church that Glen Campbell “is my daddy”....even a kid can tell how good he is...
I don't know what I enjoy more.....the great music or watching your reaction of pure joy and appreciation of the music
😅
Loved the look on your face when Glen did things even more spectacular
Glen was a great singer, guitarist, human being. Glen didn't need a $1000, $3000 guitar he didn't use a Les paul, Fender, ibanez,.martin. He used a cheap guitar and blew away at what we think are guitarist.. R.I.P #1
FWIW - A custom solid body electric Ovation 12-string viper is not a cheap guitar.
@@brpo1 well said. Been playing guitar since 1966 and I remember when the Ovation came out they were the first acoustic guitar to have built-in Electronics. Most assuredly, not a cheap guitar!
Bullshit
Yea Ovation has cheap models as well, but I am pretty sure that Glen's was premium model, and probably signature custom made anyway... lol
