A reporter once asked Eddie Van Halen what it was like to be the greatest guitar player of all time and he said I don’t know you’d have to ask that question to Roy Clark
Dang, even the great Eddie Van Halen don't want to claim that title huh!
Same thing happened with Jimmy Hendrix. The best guitar players in the world were mesmerized by Roy. One of the nicest men I ever had the opportunity to be around and a strong Christian.
@@user-xv9ul3zy1s…Jimi
The same story has gone on about supposedly Jimi Hendrix said it about Phil keaggy, Eddie said it about Roy, Jimmy Page about Hendrix etc. I'm pretty sure it never happened in the name just keep changing
True!!!
Roy Clark is one of the greatest guitar players the world has ever known. The man was amazing. Another to look at is Glenn Campbell.
He ranks up there aswell I seen the same night as Mr Clark
There’s a duet of Roy and Glen doing this song together.
How about Jerry Reed?
@@raymondrochajr9621 yes sir he in that club right along with Chet Atkins

Cool! I'll have to check that out!
My Dad is back there playing bass. He was Roy's bandleader and business manager for 20 years and they remained close friends for life. I can tell you that Roy practiced constantly. For instance, when he and his wife would join us for holiday meals, he'd bring a guitar. He'd go find a chair and just start practicing. He could carry on conversations while practicing. He was that dedicated to making sure his audience got what they were expecting. He never took a day off. It meant the world to him to be his absolute best. Thanks for sharing.
That must be an honor.
What a great story, thanks for sharing. He seemed to be quite a gentleman.
Great post. Thank you.
Well you were lucky enough to have been able to be up close and personal and enjoy the talent of who I personally consider the greatest guitar player to have ever lived.... I have watched Roy on TV for decades and was always amazed
His brother Dick and Dwight and sister sue were real good People good in the heart
"Bless their hearts!" is a Southern expression. I grew up hearing it from family, and still say it myself today.
typically "bless their heart" is a rather kind way of calling someone slow or stupid.
@@chadrushing4685 to me it more like saying "poor little thing" , and not necessarily because they are slow or stupid, but to be pitied.
Probably the most common expression upon encountering an ugly child...
"Bless his heart" or your heart, or their heart has multiple uses. As Roy used it, it was a sincere and gracious. But you can also use it as a way of talking smack about a person, but couch it in a way that doesn't sound too derogatory. "That boy never had the brains God gave a squirrel, bless his heart... " or "She's never been an attractive woman, bless her heart."
@chadrushing4685 depends on the inflection used when the words are said, it doesn't always mean calling someone an idiot.
Roy Clark is one of the most over looked greatest entertainers in the world
He wasn’t in our household growing up.
no you aren't old enough , I knew when I was a pre - teen in the '70s
@@gandalfnamirreh379BR549
Glenn Campbell was another one!!! 🙂
Watched him all the time. Hee-Haw.
I saw him in Las Vegas in 1980. He played a few songs then stopped. He stiod out in the front of the stage. He then pointed to the house band. He asked the audience to give them a big round of applause for making him look fabulous. He introduced each band member by name. Thats classs.
Wow, I love stories like that. Like, who does that? Awesome story. I always like him. He always came across as a very positive and great human being. There is a very small group of people that just have that type and f energy that you can feel.
YESSS!
There are some artists that just truly love to perform, love their fans, and appreciate the artists backing them. And Roy was definitely one of them. So relaxed on stage and with the audience.
What I heard about Roy Clark is that he was a genuinely kind man, that he believed his talent was a gift from god, and he said he felt connected to god when he played. Maybe that's what his expression was about when he closes his eyes. 🥲☺️ Just filled with joy! Good for him! ❤
He played guitar, fiddle, banjo, and he was a great singer, too….just an incredible talent!
Banjo? That's new to me, have you seen Steve Martin play?
I had the privilege of seeing him live around 86 or 87. Mel Tillis opened for him.
Yesterday when I was young, one of my most favorite songs on the planet and will be played at my memorial. This young man looks to be the age of my grand children. I was in love with ray Clark free years. He's just magnificent, so go watch. HeeHaw
I don't know if if you have.
Hee Haw, Jonny Cash show..
And a comedian his cameo on the drew Carey show was hilarious
Roy was a friend of my Dad's. He would stop by sometimes when he was in the area. He was the absolute best musician I have ever seen. You could always tell when he was getting as fast as he could play. His tongue would stick out. RIP Roy.
Not only a master of strings but look how much he is enjoying this.
His show in Branson in the 90s is still one of the best shows I've ever been to. He put 110 percent into it
Roy, a musical Phil Esposito...whew!
"Bless his/her/your heart" is a southern thing. It can be used as a salutation, as Roy used it, but is most often used at the end of a statement to or about someone as an expression of empathy. For example, somebody might say, "Pete's just lost his job, bless his heart." What southerners also understand is that it can be used kind of disingenuously to mask an insult, and there is a joke down here in the deep south that you can say anything about somebody and it's okay as long as you add "bless his heart" to the end of it. So, the reply to the above statement might be, "Not surprised. Pete's never done a hard day's work in his life, bless his heart." See, that was mean, but it's okay, because they added "bless his heart." 😉
Instead of southern, it's rural, country folk thing
I live up north my grandparents always said that❤
@@scotthovland7380 yes, I'm in missouri which most people don't consider the south and I've heard that phrase as long as I can remember
"Bless her heart, she don't know no better."😂
Here, I brought you this diet book.

A true artist. Closing his eyes meant he was feeling every note he played. Such a classic.

Up until the day he died, Roy had forgotten more about playing the guitar than most people will ever learn.
And fiddle and banjo lol
Roy Clark is one of the few musicians who can absolutely OWN a 12-string guitar...and can make it do whatever the heck he wants it to do.
Him and Glen Campbell.
@@RJ-nz5jnRoy, Glenn Cambell, and Don Felder can shred the hell out of a 12-string.
He was not only very funny and friendly, but also one of the world's greatest guitarists. He was fantastic in concert. A very great legend!
I believe he also played classical violin
As well as the ountry fiddle
And harmonica
This is a concert.
Far as I'm concerned
Roy Clark is the very best stringed instrument player.
The fact that he played that on a 12 string is insane.
Indeed! It's hard enough to play like Roy does on a 6-string, but to do that on a 12-string is just insane!
Some time ago I was in a band...I was the country part of the show and we all decided a 12 string would fit very well. I did too until we did a 6 hr New Year's Eve show at the local Eagles. One of the Beatles once said....." I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS"!
I know what he meant!!!!
I sold that guitar the next week!!!
Exactly !!!!
that explains the look of pain on his face, his fingers being ripped open by those tiny strings, all that sliding, the 12 string is usually played by strumming.... i guess he has calluses on his fingers, and so quick and nimble, no fret noise, he is good, he is the best
I hate tuning 12 strings
You go anywhere below the Mason-Dixon Line and you will hear "Bless Your Heart" all the time. Roy passed away in 2018. He was one of our greatest guitarists. Roy does sing. Check out "Thank God and Greyhound" and "Yesterday, When I Was Young".
He wasn’t just a musician, he was an entertainer. His love for what he did showed.
I often heard "well bless your little heart" over 55 years ago from my aunts in Northern Virginia. What's new to me is these young-uns with what looks like toilet paper stick-en out their ears.
@@eddiep7444
Interestingly “well bless your heart “ is fraudulently the response when someone says or does something naïve or just not well thought out. A little bit of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Tone and context is important in determining the meaning.
It’s not unlike the phrase used in New Jersey “forget about it”. The meaning can very depending on the way and tone it is said.
@@michaelalbert8474Much of the time it was genuine, but you're right-another interpretation: " you did your best"
Thanks. I heard it in the 60s and 70s. Haven't heard it in last 20 years.
He was a great guitarist! You only saw the tip of the iceberg on how good he was... his albums are treasures
There was a television show called Hee Haw if you want to see more of Roy Clark and him having fun playing his stringed instruments he did it there every time the show was on, grew up watching him play went to some of his concerts and shows he is the absolute best to play by far... more talented than words can capture
Hee haw was a great show
Roy Clark was such an amazing guitar player and gentleman. Playing fast on a 12 string is not easy. It blows me away that Rolling Stone didn’t have him on their list of the top 250 guitarists. Personally, I think he should be in the top 100.
Hell, Roy should be in the top ten. He was an absolute master of the 12 string.
He could dazzle with 6 string too!
Without a doubt.
RS is a joke. Don't give any credence to that awful rag and their bs lists. The fact they still have Hendrix as #1 says it all, so overrated it's ridiculous
Really though, considering how many rappers and non-Rock acts have made it to the RR Hall of Fame, Roy Clark should be in there too just because of his talent.
Roy Clark was one of my favorite entertainers of all time. We used to watch him and Buck Owens on Hee Haw every week.
Another great country music entertainer you may appreciate is Junior Brown. While not quite as outrageous as Clark he also has his own unique style of entertainment.
Roy Clark and Buck Owens were monsters on strings I could listen to them all day long, and Hee Haw was a fun show even though a lot of people up north claimed to hate it, BTW I`m from Boston, Mass. and a country boy at heart, I hate city living. Peace and brother love to you and all.

Watched him on Hee Haw as a kid. I was mesmerized by his playing. A wonderful person as well.
I'm glad to see some of these virtuoso's being rediscovered by younger generations! I admired Roy Clark when he was in his hey-day. And he could play more than the Guitar too. Another was Glen Campbell and the still living legend, Vince Gill! Often overlooked are the Ladies, like Barbara Mandrell who could play every instrument in the band.
you could put any instrument ever created in front of the Mandrell sisters and one of them could play it, and well at that.
You mentioned Glenn Campbell, who was absolutely a great, great guitar player. The only musician that ever played in the Wrecking Crew, yet couldn't read music. Imagine that.
😮
Glenn and Roy could both shred like nobody's business. The world lost 2 greats with their passing....
GLEN NOR ROY COULD NOT READ MUSIC…AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME GIFTS FROM HEAVEN AMEN.DR.BRYANT LANE ❤.
Roy could play anything with strings, guitar , banjo and violin and was a virtuoso on all three. RIP Roy.
He could play a baby grand with a pick
Roy Clark was a brilliant musician -- very underrated because most people knew him from Hee Haw. He also had a gorgeous voice.
A friend of mine once said that Roy Clark could stretch rubber bands across an empty cigar box and make it sound like a Stradivarius. Incredible talent on many instruments.
And your friend was correct. He is one of the top most talented musicians to ever grace a stage. I grew up in a family of musicians and I will never forget the first time I heard Roy Clark, I was 5 and my cousin ( Another one of THE greatest guitar players EVER) sat me down and we watched Roy Clark play this very song and I was done, he was my hero then and still is today. I love Larry Carlton (I can hear people asking Who?) and he is utterly amazing, but Roy has him beat to be sure.
"Orange Blossom Special" - Roy Clark & Jimmy Henley is a magical performance. Roy passed away in 2018.
A hero to us older guitar players.... and always funny and humble ... God bless him
I was at a Roger Maris golf tournament for charity. Roy Clark was the entertainment for the banquet. Great show. Later Roy and his band came to the hospitality room . We drank and played Left Right Center. Roy had not drank for a very long time. He was totally drunk , staggering. The band was holding him up. Some asked, " Roy, play a song". He immediatly woke up, play the song, then went back into his stooper. Amazing musician.
Funny.
I'll never forget when Roy Clark was the head liner at the Garfield County Fair Days in Rifle Colorado. It was the same year that Exxon stopped operations in the area and about 2200 workers were laid off. It turned the area into a ghost town within a couple of weeks. At the end of the show Roy announced that all proceeds from the show is going to be donated to Rifle and the surrounding areas. What a class act he was. RIP Roy.
Back in the early 60's, I was with a couple of friends in club in Juarez Mexico. As we weren't wearing evening jackets we had to sit in the bar. A performer came on stage and played "Malaguena"on the guitar. Fantastic performance. It wasn't until a decade or so later that I saw him on TV and discovered it was Roy Clark.
Great story.
There is a clip of Roy Clark playing that on "The Odd Couple". Simply astonishing feat of musicianship!
Love seeing young guys getting their eyelids peeled back when they witness Roy Clark. Check him out playing 'Malaguena'. He wasn't just a virtuoso when it came to country/western music.
did this live on a tv show.....AWESOME
Many rock ,country stars who knew or met Clark said he was an amazing guitarist .
Roy Clark is the GOAT.
I'm 62, and I knew as a little kid he was special. If I heard he was going to be on Johnny Carson that night, I'd secretly stay awake to see him. Truly one of the GOATs.
This would have been much better without the stupid looking face of the commentator!🎉
Roy was an American original. Master of the guitar and banjo. And mandolin…… Great man of music. He is missed. 👍🎸🇺🇸❤️
And the fiddle
@@margaret1321 yep- and the fiddle👍😁
And he was an amazing showman. Funny as hell and great stage presence.
I was 11 when I first heard and saw Roy Clark on t.v justmight@
He seemed to be a master of anything with strings on it.
Bless your heart is a southern saying. Our older family members said "Bless your heart" and taught our younger generations to say it as well. They didn't just say it to be nice or polite. They said it and truly meant it. To all who read this comment. I truly mean this. Bless your heart❤
My dad loved Roy Clark! We used to watch Hee Haw all the time! Good ol days 🎸
I got to meet Roy when I was younger. I actually got to interview him for a school project. He was the kindest, most humble man I think I have ever met, and he never let his talent or his fame go to his head. Roy was easily one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists to ever live: his skill on the guitar and banjo are unrivaled in my opinion. I would suggest listening to Malaguena (Spanish-style guitar) and Yesterday, When I Was Young (his biggest country hit). Thank you so much for listening to Roy and continuing his legacy!
You're correct and IMHO his Malaguena is the best. I mean, WOW! Great comment, and you are lucky that you got to meet him.
@@lynnestamey7272 Interestingly, Roy played that song at the end of an episode of the old tv show Odd Couple.
Yeah, Southern Gentleman.
Roy Clark used heavy gauge strings with high action. As a guitar player myself, I use light gauge strings with low action. His setup would have killed me. How he played like that, I'll never know, but he was great. He played many other instruments too. He was an amazing talent.
Dick Dale the same. Heavy strings.
I hate trying to play on a guitar with a high action on it. I play electric, and a completely different genre. I noticed many of the same techniques implemented though. Ie, the tremelo picking is used in a lot of metal music.
I bet he could've played that kind of stuff easily though. (tapping, sweep picking, and things like that).
Dude was way ahead of his time.
His fingers were made of Iron
I have my Jackson set as low as it'll go and Ernie Ball 9s
@@robbarrett6002 I use 10s and the same brand.
I went way too long without playing guitar though. Now, my sweet picking sucks. I'm going to have to do a lot of practice to get back into that. Tapping is very easy though. I'm going to work on sweep tapping again as well.
I spent 10 years in Nashville TN doing electronics work for the music industry and Roy Clark is considered holy amongst professional musicians. He's one of the greats the public doesn't know.......just how amazing he is. If it weren't for Pro-tools I'd still be doing that kind of work.....in Nashville....and loving life. There's some fascinating people who can do beautiful things with an instrument.
When Roy Clark passed away a few years ago, music lost an unprecedented entertainer. I used to be so mesmerized watching him play the guitar, or banjo. I can't imagine how many people he has played to. He was one of the best.
Roy Clark (dueling banjos).... best ever!!
Roy Clark played a string cigar box in his early childhood... he is the most talented I have ever heard. God Bless him.
Roy was a guitar master...
Sadly he has since passed on....
RIP Roy 🎸
I do believe that Roy was the fastest guitar player in the world,, I ran sound for him over the years,,very nice man he will be missed,,,
"Bless Your Heart" is a southern thing. Now they come in two forms. There is the "neighbor brought over some chicken soup after finding out that you have been sick" Bless Your Heart. Then there is the "finding out Little Johnny has been stealing peaches from your peach tree" Bless Your Heart. That one usually comes out as, "Well bless his little pea pickin' heart." One is an " I Love You" the other is an "I'm gonna get you."
Saw Roy in concert once. He masterfully played a huge variety of stringed instruments. If it had strings, he could play it.
They're not ' strings' , they're " strangs '
I am SOOO GLAD you kept your mouth shut and let Roy's talent and love for the music just SHINE uninterrupted... So many "reactors" here either don't respect the artist or the music, OR, they just want to hear themselves talk because they have NOTHING of VALUE to offer. Same. Appreciate it...!
His most famous vocal performance was a CLASSIC, called Yesterday, when I was young. Now that I am not young anymore, it takes on deeper meaning everyday,
For the young man who made the video, "bless your heart" , is a southern country thing. I grew up with it.
Roy Clark has been deceased since 2018. An absolutely amazing guitarist and banjo player. Incredible.
BLESS YOUR HEART!! It's a Southern phrase, with multiple meanings. If someone says "I lost my job or my pet died" you reply I'm so sorry, bless your heart. Someone does something stupid you insult them and add Bless Your Heart, so it doesn't sound like an insult. If someone offends or disrespects you, you say "Are you having a bad day? Well Bless Your Heart". Trust me you will know the difference by the voice inflections! Great reaction young man! Hello from Texas 🤠
Southerners aren't the only ones who say that, I'd say more accurately it's a rural thang
"Bless your heart" ranges from a genuine expression of sympathy & concern to a (equally genuine) expression of "You're an idiot!"
@@CindyNavarro correct
Roy also liked to be comedic. Hee Haw had him play Dueling Banjos a couple of times, usually with a healthy dose of humor mixed in. On another note, Ghost Riders In The Sky has been covered by a multitude of singers. It's probably one of the most iconic CW songs. A very early recording was done by The Sons Of The Pioneers (b/w, excellent version). Johnny Cash did a famous cover also. For a more modern twist, Geoff Castellucci sang it a capella and layered himself.
Also on Hee Haw you want to see Roy playing Gone home..
Also covered by the Southern Rock band, The Outlaws, great rock version.
@@thewindleYep yep! That’s the version i always think of!
Burl Ives covered it first back in 1949, its awesome😊

And he’s playing this on a TWELVE STRING guitar.
Great reaction! I love this song. It has been recorded by so many artists. Roy does such a great version of it. He was such a wonderful entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary.
I thought my parents were weird for liking Roy Clark , Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed...I only listened to Van Halen and Def Leppard and thought every one else "stinks". Boy was I STUPID and NARROW-MINDED as a kid !?!?!?! These guys were THE TOP OF THE CLASS - and are STILL to this very day !! If you ever need to smile, just watch Roy Clark perform! Amazing!
I knew Roy Clark was one of the best guitar players but this is the first time I heard him play this song so awesome
Him playing "Malaguena" on the "Odd Couple" (a sitcom from the '70's/80's?) and "Twelfth St Rag" are just a couple of my favorites. Edit: Never mind. Just saw that you already did them. All live, too.
Amazing guitarist and talented performer, and very funny. I saw him perform in Nashville, Branson, Vegas and Reno. Each time the shows were a gift without me asking or choosing; each time I was more appreciative.
Roy was definitely a real talent.
He died in 2018
"Bless your (their) heart" is a sort of universal Southern statement when things are either good or bad. Sadly we lost Roy Clark in 2018 but I honestly believe that you could stretch 6 rubber bands across a cigar box and Roy would make it sound like a Stratocaster. The man was and still is one of the most phenomenal stringed instrument players ever to walk this earth.
He's dumber than a pile of rocks, Bless his heart. He tried his hardest, bless his heart. He's uglier than sin, bless his heart.
Another super under rated guitarist...Glenn Campbell! Roy Clark & Glenn Campbell teamed up on some awesome guitar duos.
Just happened on your videos this evening. It was a treat watching the face of someone who clearly understands something about making music react to seeing a master at work. I grew up in the South in the 60's and 70's, where country music was second only to Elvis, and Roy Clark was one of the most-played artists on the radio stations of the time down there. And yes, he had a knack for picking up any string instrument and making it his own. Some of it was natural talent, but from all I've heard, he worked at his craft every moment that he could.
I especially love this video, later in his life, when his absolute love of the music is so clearly evident.
He always looked like he was having fun.
I think Roy felt extremely lucky to have had so much success (well deserved) and it kept him humble and from taking himself too seriously. He loved to entertain and clown around to garner a smile. I knew him from his time on "Hee Haw" and he always comes across as a really good hearted guy. Gone but never forgotten.
I grew up listening to Roy Clark and Buck Owens almost every night. Awesome musicians.
On Hee Haw right!
I totally forgot how good this guy was! Not a country fan but remember watching Hee Haw with my parents and I really liked Roy Clarke back then. He could play anything with strings. It's fun to refresh my memory and to see a younger generation enjoying his talent. Huge talent for sure.
One of the absolute greatest entertainers in history. And no, there was nothing he couldn't do. Wonderful voice, amazing sense of humor. It was an amazing experience seeing him in concert.
OMG!!! It’s like a video game. Please more Roy Clark 😮
Total mastery of the guitar, even with his eyes closed.
When someone asks any one of the world's greatest guitar players who do they think is the best? Roy Clark. For those who don't say Roy, they have never heard him play before.

I'm 60. All the guys and gals, across all genres, that I thought were clowns and jokes, when I was growing up, were actually classics and geniuses. Wow... I could have learned and appreciated so much more if I would have just payed attention and not been such a "clown" myself. Man, that OG could play! 👴
I loved roy on hee haw in the 70's but hid it from my friends,I kept a charlie pride 8 track under my truck seat for when I was alone ,,I was stupid for not learning what they knew and trying to be the next jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton
I grew up watching him on "HEE HAW". The musicians they used to have as guests were awesome.
R.I.P. ROY!!
One of a kind”………When Mr Roy Clark first came into the scene it did not take long before everybody took- notice in that stage ….that when it came to his country music guitar playing skills and speed…..he gravitated in his own league all by himself and way-above all the others ….and no one ever came close to closing the gap…..and so they just enjoyed watching him perform and becoming part of the audience……
Mr. Clark is a wizard on the guitar!

Roy was SUCH a nice guy. I happened to run into him when he was playing Topsfield fair near Boston in 1989. I share his last name, and my grandfather was his second cousin. He invited me into his tour bus, and we chatted for half an hour or so. He signed a photo for my grandfather. He was broke when young so he saved to buy a guitar. Once he mastered that, he sold it to buy a violin. Once he nailed that down, he traded for a mandolin...
Check out Roy Clark playing the Malaguena on an episode of the Odd Couple. It will blow your mind.
I saw a live show many, many years ago with Roy opening for the incomparable Glen Campbell. Roy then came out and closed the show with Glen and this was one of the songs they performed. That was probably the most talent that has ever been on a stage at one time, anytime, anywhere.
Two of the best.
Indeed. Glen Campbell is one of the most underrated musicians out there. I never saw him live but I have seen some of his recorded concert stuff, and I have been amazed!!!

As a guitarist, but not really a country music fan, I still have to give Roy Clark his due. Truly one of the most gifted musicians to pick up a guitar. A jaw dropping master. Pretty damn good on the banjo too.
...I am not a country fan either, but their talent is undeniable , some really talented country players...check out some duets with Glen Campbell or Chet Atkins...even some of the contemporary country players are great, it seems most are influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd and other southern rock bands of the 70s ( Allman Brothers, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Black foot etc.) ...I am a metal guy. But my eyes have been opened to 70s southern rock lately, these guys can play...peace Brother
Find Phil and Tommy Emmanuel doing this song and having fun. Phil is a phenomenal player, he died too young, but Tommy (try Classical Gas, Initiation and other tunes) is considered the best guitar player in the world, even though he plays rhythm when playing with Phil.
Roy Clark was a really great musician. The guitar he was playing is an Ovation 12-string Deacon model. It is fairly rare to find these days.
Yes that was great, and I love when he plays that Spanish guitar it was almost 10 minutes long
A God ! Always a master,!! Saw him on Her Haw & found out Russians loved the show! My wife Elainea hellina monoristronicitich afrees!😮
I had the honor of sitting in the front row to see his show in Tahoe many years ago. This man amazed the entire crowd with how many instruments he totally mastered. Due to a mutual acquaintance i got to meet him in his dressing room after the show. What a humble talented a kind gentleman.
Roy is one of the greatest guitarists ever
I had the great fortune to grow up as Roy Clark played on Hee Haw. He was the greatest guitar player ever. One of his most iconic songs forever engraved in my mind was “Yesterday when I was young so many happy songs were waiting to be sung…” Sad he is no longer with us.
Turned 61 sat. Remember seeing Roy on HeeHaa very talented man
Roy Clark was not only the greatest instrumentalist, but he also had an amazing voice, sang with his heart and soul. Loved him so much!
