My Dad is back there playing bass. He was Roy's bandleader and business manager for 20 years and they remained close friends for life. I can tell you that Roy practiced constantly. For instance, when he and his wife would join us for holiday meals, he'd bring a guitar. He'd go find a chair and just start practicing. He could carry on conversations while practicing. He was that dedicated to making sure his audience got what they were expecting. He never took a day off. It meant the world to him to be his absolute best. Thanks for sharing.

I saw him in Las Vegas in 1980. He played a few songs then stopped. He stiod out in the front of the stage. He then pointed to the house band. He asked the audience to give them a big round of applause for making him look fabulous. He introduced each band member by name. Thats classs.

@@prayingmantis6777 Chris LaDue also did that, and introduced each back member Individually. And several times, he would just leave the stage and let the band go wild on their own. His band even stuck together for awhile after Chris' death, and his son was singing. That band could take off and play about any type of music, and they all acted like they were enjoying every moment. Chris and his band kept everyone rocking, and there were no special effects, with the exception of a mechanical bull. Just a high charged musical night outside under the stars. They have the best rendition of "Life is a Highway" in my opinion, along with a wonderful selection of other rock, country, cowboy, humorous, and ballad type songs . It was such a wonderful evening that was over much too fast.

"Bless his heart" or your heart, or their heart has multiple uses. As Roy used it, it was a sincere and gracious. But you can also use it as a way of talking smack about a person, but couch it in a way that doesn't sound too derogatory. "That boy never had the brains God gave a squirrel, bless his heart... I got to meet Roy when I was younger. I actually got to interview him for a school project. He was the kindest, most humble man I think I have ever met, and he never let his talent or his fame go to his head. Roy was easily one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists to ever live: his skill on the guitar and banjo are unrivaled in my opinion. I would suggest listening to Malaguena (Spanish-style guitar) and Yesterday, When I Was Young (his biggest country hit). Thank you so much for listening to Roy and continuing his legacy!

"Bless his/her/your heart" is a southern thing. It can be used as a salutation, as Roy used it, but is most often used at the end of a statement to or about someone as an expression of empathy. For example, somebody might say, "Pete's just lost his job, bless his heart." What southerners also understand is that it can be used kind of disingenuously to mask an insult, and there is a joke down here in the deep south that you can say anything about somebody and it's okay as long as you add "bless his heart" to the end of it. So, the reply to the above statement might be, "Not surprised. Pete's never done a hard day's work in his life, bless his heart." See, that was mean, but it's okay, because they added "bless his heart." 😉

I just loved Roy Clark. He reminds me so much of my dad (in looks). I used to watch Hee-Haw with my grandparents and Roy was always my favorite. My grandparents had an 8 track of Roy Clark and I really fell in love with the song Yesterday When I Was Young. To this day I cannot listen to that song without tears running down my face from missing my grandparents and Roy and because it is such a beautiful song (and beautifully sung). Now that I am old myself, the song really resonates with me and makes me long for the days of my youth. I go to Branson with my mom every summer and intended on seeing Mr. Clark perform live but he passed away and I was devastated knowing I would never get to. And it was like losing my dad all over again (they looked so much h alike they could've been brothers from different mothers lol). I miss Roy's smile and the twinkle in his beautiful eyes and he truly was a master on the guitar as well as many other instruments. RIP Mr. Roy Clark. You were loved and respected and you are sorely missed. 😢

On another note, Ghost Riders In The Sky has been covered by a multitude of singers. It's probably one of the most iconic CW songs. A very early recording was done by The Sons Of The Pioneers (b/w, excellent version). Johnny Cash did a famous cover also. For a more modern twist, Geoff Castellucci sang it a capella and layered himself.

However, it has nothing to do with saving your soul on judgement day. YOU can't play for your salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by God's grace are we saved through faith; not by works, (or being a firefighter or law enforcement or a hero or a marine or honor guard or a veteran or a war hero or dying for your country or actor or puppeteer or News reporter/anchor or a soul singer or killed by a terrorist or a sports hero or our heritage or ethnic background or a fashion designer or engineer or a rock star or bodybuilder or a writer or cooking show host or walk into a room and lite up a room with their smile or a pioneer or a trail blazer or trending or a legend or a super pop star or bounty hunter or race car driver or football coach or country music singer or basketball star or civil rights leader or being modest or being humble or a Disney star actor or game show host or making people laugh or making people happy or never killing anyone) 9 it is the free gift of God, not that anyone can boast of their salvation." Eternity will not be about any of us or what we have done. It will all be about Jesus.

Roy Clark used heavy gauge strings with high action. As a guitar player myself, I use light gauge strings with low action. His setup would have killed me. How he played like that, I'll never know, but he was great. He played many other instruments too. He was an amazing talent.

I hate trying to play on a guitar with a high action on it. I play electric, and a completely different genre. I noticed many of the same techniques implemented though. Ie, the tremelo picking is used in a lot of metal music.
I bet he could've played that kind of stuff easily though. (tapping, sweep picking, and things like that).
Dude was way ahead of his time.

I went way too long without playing guitar though. Now, my sweet picking sucks. I'm going to have to do a lot of practice to get back into that. Tapping is very easy though. I'm going to work on sweep tapping again as well.

I love this. Roy Clark was a great musician. I also accidentally threw up on Roy Clark’s lap in the 70’s at the Roy Clark golf classic. He was so amazing. He didn’t even get upset with me. Just patted me on the back as he carefully removed me from his lap and reassured me it was ok.

I saw a live show many, many years ago with Roy opening for the incomparable Glen Campbell. Roy then came out and closed the show with Glen and this was one of the songs they performed. That was probably the most talent that has ever been on a stage at one time, anytime, anywhere.

Roy passed 11/15/2018 at 85. I loved to watch and hear him play. He was one of my top music idols, the other was Mac Davis who passed on 9/29/2020. Roy could literally play any stringed instrument you put in his hands. And Mac could write a song on the spot and proved it often on his TV show. I cried both times I heard either of them had died.

...I am not a country fan either, but their talent is undeniable , some really talented country players...check out some duets with Glen Campbell or Chet Atkins...even some of the contemporary country players are great, it seems most are influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd and other southern rock bands of the 70s ( Allman Brothers, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Black foot etc.) ...I am a metal guy. But my eyes have been opened to 70s southern rock lately, these guys can play...peace Brother

Fun Fact: The guitar that Roy Clark played in this clip is an Ovation Deacon. It was one of two solid body electric guitars Ovation produced from 1972-1980. The other model was called the Breadwinner, which was the same design as the Deacon, but didn't have a 12-string model as an option and the body had a matte finish instead of a gloss finish to keep the two models separate. It's a very neat guitar which had an active pickup built in it, and a selector switch to change the tones in the pickups which were designed to mimic the tonal quality of an Ovation, Fender or a Gibson. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very well during it's initial run in the 1970s, and Ovation tried to redesign the guitars around 1975 to possibly catch some interest, but it didn't work out. My father has a gen 1 Breadwinner hanging up at his house next to his Gibson Marauder he used to play when he was younger. I always loved the quirky design of the Gen 1s, it reminded me of a battle axe.
Great Reaction. Roy Clark was an absolute BEAST on the guitar.

Even though I was familiar with Roy Clark before because my dad was an avid country fan. I saw Roy Clark alive at my elementary school. Believe it or not, he used to be part of a group that traveled around and put on a marionette show. And after the show he entertained us by playing a banjo, and a fiddle. The cool part, though was when he was playing the fiddle, he played it, using a coat hanger as a bow and a baby bottle as a bow and was continually making jokes. This would’ve been around 1964 or 1965. But I still remember it.
