@@LyleBialk for sure. Plus many don’t even offer a manual any longer in the US. Our 2nd choice was the Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek. It has a solid NA V6 that they’ve used for years and a solid transmission(non-CVT). Honestly probably the best price value compared to competitors.

I had a feeling you were going with Toyota before you drove up to the dealer. The reliability and longevity of Toyota is great, although I'm a Chevy man I really enjoyed my old Toyota truck
The newer Toyotas are still questionable as they’ve had lots of issues with them. The 4Runner is the old design and I saw tons of them on the used market with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. I’m just at a point in my life where I want to keep a vehicle long term and don’t want to deal with a ton of break downs. The 4Runner seems to check all those boxes and all indications are I’ll have much better luck keeping it 10+ years if I do my part. We looked at a bunch of different makes/models too. But we will see!
The new Toyotas are suspect on lots of levels. Love how people scream about America First and then buy Japanese and Korean vehicles. Yes, they are assembled in the US in some cases but have a ton of Asian content. I bet most of these folks don't even look at the vehicle content sticker.
@@garyjarvis2730 correct, most domestic vehicles are just assembled here just like many Asian vehicles that have plants here in the U.S. Unfortunately the quality of those Asian vehicles assembled here seem to have more issues too. It’s a global economy and we truly don’t make much here in the U.S. any longer atleast not on the automotive front.!
Toyotas are just the best made cars. They are not exciting but just keep going. I have a Lexus and only issue is squeaky console lid…compared to my last car-Mercedes S550- which I loved but always fixing stupid over engineered mechanicals.
Great video and that 4-Runner is pretty. I'm a Ford guy too if you remember my 89 Mustang back from our days in the Navy. Just can't do it these days with the prices they are charging and the poor quality they are putting out. I hope your Raptor holds up well as it's a gorgeous truck. I also believe all the fuel efficiency requirements have killed transmission reliability. I have a Subaru Ascent and am on my 3rd CVT right at 100K miles and Subaru of America has been useless as well. Good thing I have an extended warranty to 125K. Used to never buy those but they have saved my ass lately as everything with new vehicles is so damn expensive. New CVT is $10K which is absolutely nuts!! 4-Runners are like a blast from the past but I think they are solid and will serve you well.
Yea man that Mustang was nice! Miss the 92 I had for a number of years. Yea I purposely avoided anything with a CVT. First I don’t really care how they drive, but they have a relatively high failure rate. Supposedly Toyota has the better CVTs, but I avoided those as well. I actually like Subaru but pretty much everything they sell is CVT. Not even sure you can get a manual here in the U.S. anymore other than the WRX. Extended warranty can definitely pay for itself. We had one on the Edge to 125k but got tired of being with out the car for so long. So far so good with the new Toyota. We do love the Raptor! Man it always makes me smile.
Very nice ride. We have a 2023 Limited trim that we absolutely love and will drive until the wheels fall off. The tried and true is the way to go right there no matter how outdated some opinions may get slung around out there. We don't go with trends here. That non powered liftgate you have is just one less thing you have to worry about wear and tear and if you are physically capable it shouldn't matter. I personally have had a not so nice experience as a one time "fix or repair daily" owner with a 2017 Edge, both the stealership all the way up to corporate.. NEVER again. It's a shame because it was a nice vehicle that I really liked and enjoyed with every intention of keeping it for many years. But they simply wouldn't stand by their product at all and any time a problem came up it always seemed to be about covering their own behind before ever doing right by the owner and performing a proper fix. Older Ford was pretty good, Ford over the last 8 years or so.. not so good. And I really hate to see that for an American company considering I was a Toyota owner for years and decided to try and give an American company (I was pro GM before Toyota for most of my life up until the early 2000's) a chance and they totally blew it.. back to Toyota it is!
Those Limited trims are super nice! We're right under 2K miles so far on the 4Runner and loving it. It's not perfect, but I have a ton of confidence in it over the old Edge ST and even worry about my 2021 Raptor Ince it's starting to get some miles under it (just passed 55K). My Dad passed away in 2017(Senior Ford Master tech) and even he saw a lot of the issues starting to crop up with the newer Ford models. I always wonder what he'd be saying today. I love their designs/power etc... but that love is overshadowed by crappy Q.C. and Customer service. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience!
I hear you loud and clear there. I am very sad and disheartened by how our American companies have went downhill for at least the last decade. My whole life on both sides of my family foreign cars in general were forbidden and you were kind of an outcast if you had one. My dad and both grandpas wouldn't even allow them on their property. On another note about American car companies, my dad worked for Chrysler, a company that I once had tremendous respect for and now I am beside myself over what Stellantis has done to the brand. Witnessing these American companies allow failure has been a tough one to take.@@ChristianGrest As for the 4R Limited trim it is quite nice.. it was either that or the Lexus GX460 which was very plush and equally good in terms of quality. The 4R just seemed more practical for the long haul. The v8 of the GX would be really nice but the uncertainty about fuel prices, especially premium fuel and then the added expense of maintenance and oil changes the 4R won. I'll also add that if you can find an independent mechanic, somebody that specializes in Toyota/Lexus you'll be better off than going to the dealership. If you do your own repairs and maintenance that's even better. I personally avoid the stealers.. I mean dealer service departments as much as possible.
@@marcodarko6941 yea it’s sad to see the state of Chrysler. I do most of my own work when I can and the 4Runner looks easy to maintain. Love how they still have grease fittings on the Unjoints versus sealed/throw away units everyone else uses now.
60yo and can say i had a couple of good fords-65-240 six truck and an 03 2 valve 4.6 truck, but that was it. had a coyote oil and coolant leaker that broke me from ford and i thank the good Lord i never went down the 3 valve phaser road.
My Dad really liked the 4.6 motors. He had one for years and my mom sold it after he passed. I had a 5.4 3V with over 100k that was solid… those were known to have issues.
I had a Chevy Lumina that was under warranty, and the trans lost overdrive. Long story short, they rebuilt the trans. I asked them why not just replace the trans? They told me if I was paying for it, thats what they would have done. Warranty work? rebuild...more money the the dealer, I guess!
I could’ve broke down the parts/labor cost. Would’ve been cheaper to put a reman unit in in this case especially since they pulled the transmissions numerous times. But yea I get what you’re saying.
I own four Fords, and love them all. A 1972 Pinto Squire wagon, a 2003 Mustang V6 coupe, a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis (with 381,000 miles on it) and a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. There was a time when Ford actually did make good affordable cars. ALL new "cars" are GARBAGE, no matter the brand, and that includes Toyota. Keep that '96 F-150 FOREVER.
Yea most all the new stuff sucks across all makes. We looked at a lot of stuff and went with the most out of date thing we could find. Miss a lot of the older rides we had. That 1996 will get passed to my oldest daughter eventually, but it’s staying in the family for sure.!
Ohhhhh baby 🤤😍🤤🤤🤤😍 I'm in love! I'll have to watch this later and comment again, but hubba hubba! Congrats, and welcome to the good side 😂🙌 305k miles on my 05 4Runner now, and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country tomorrow
Yea I knew you had a ton of miles on yours! Hope you’ve been doing good! I’ve gotta replace your channel t shirt soon… it’s wore out and has some pin holes from Minion and Anna keeps trying to throw it out. I won’t let her 🤣
Toyota has the best looking color Gray this is one beautiful ride. You will be a lot happier with this choice, Ford doesn't even come close to Toyota quality.
Yea it was painful. I put up with it longer and had more patience than the majority of folk would have had. I truly wanted them to do something to keep us as a customer, but they could care less. They’re not the same as they were a decade ago. All manufacturers are having their issues too, but it’s how they handle them that counts. Ford’s CEO has run them into the ground.
Heck yea! Love those older F-150’s like my 96’. Really loved our Edge too, but it was so problematic. My oldest daughter has an Edge and it’s been 100%.
2008 f150 xlt 4x4 supercab bought at a ford dealership 3 months later started hesitating while in reverse during the fall. turns out the engine 5.4 v8 was slowly nuking itself to death. several service visits later i knew ford wasn’t for me. went to ram pickups ever since not one needed elevated service even had one for 6 yrs just normal maintenance.
Bummer that Ford didn't take care of a loyal customer. One component that probably prolonged your misery is the abysmal state of mechanic talent at dealerships these days, fueled in part by the compensation model which incentivizes getting the car out the door and not necessarily fixing it. There are countless articles and videos out there that discuss this. I'm only being partially facetious when I say you probably had the new guy/car wash guy rebuilding your transmission. I wouldn't take my car to any dealership unless I knew for certain they were the last and final option. Find a good independent shop and don't look back. I take all my vehicles to Automotive Performance and Chassis in Apex.
The tech there whom I’ve spoken to many times actually was an older guy that had been a transmission tech for decades. I believe though since it was warranty, Ford wanted to go the cheapest route just to kick us out the door regardless of how long it’d take for us to come back. They did end up replacing some extra parts the last go round like the torque converter, but Ford repeatedly denied replacing the transmission despite all the records of service visits. But yea I agree, a local independent shop can be much better. I think they have more skin in the game where reputation is on the line. Typically I try and do my own work outside of warranty when it makes sense.
@@ChristianGrest Awesome 4Runner. The last Ford we had was my wife's 2004 Ford Mustang V6, old school and didn't give us many problems. Engine and transmission were solid, but that's because it was an old Fox-body car. That's the last Ford we had. I wouldn't trust the newer stuff, as I heard so many horror stories. Also don't forget GM, they make a lot of cr@p. We had a Buick Enclave that was just like your Edge - always in the shop. I really liked that car but couldn't stand the issues. Engine, transmission, AC, electrical gremlins, etc. - that car always broke down. We now have 2 Toyota Highlanders, which are much better vehicles but both have the V6. I don't trust the newer turbo engines.
Wow, that's one heck of a story! I wish you all the best in your new vehicle purchase. Sometimes the key is finding a good dealership; that doesn't make light of what your situation was though, I understand. 45 yrs of buying and leasing Ford and GM trucks for my businesses and personal use and I have no bad stories like that. Two neighbours down the street drive late model Edges and they love them. I've experienced a bad dealership once and I took my business to another one and have been super happy since. This is in addition to my original comment as I forgot to ask you this. It looks like you traded in your 2020 Edge at the Toyota dealership? What did the dealership say when you told them about the transmission problem in this Edge? Can they fix it prior to offering it for sale?
My oldest daughter has an Edge and it’s been perfect. I think the more problematic ones are the ST models… too much power for the transmission/drivetrain in those in my opinion. Loved that car, but just couldn’t take the constant issues and lack of response. Appreciate you watching and sharing your experience!
Had a 2012 mustang gt with 80 thousand miles on it the steering just suddenly locked up while driving at 45 mph going into a corner and put me into a guardrail! I have been a ford guy since I was 18 now I'm going nissan
If the Rapter is a V8 you should be good for a long time.. if 3.5 just sell it while its worth something. I was interested in the new Explorer but with all the transmission issues it eventually scared me away. Can't go wrong with the last gen 4runner I do think the TRD is a bit of a ripoff..... regardless congrats!
Been pretty happy with the 3.5EB motors in both my Raptors and regular F150 trucks I’ve owned. Only had 1 that needed cam phasers. They sure do have more to break though.
I would've went with the 2025 Pathfinder Road Creek as it's much more contemporary or waited for the 2025 New 4 Runner, not to be insulting, but your 4 Runner already looks very dated. Which shouldn't be any surprise, that model is 14 years old, I hope you got a killer deal! As far a your Ford is concerned, after the first shop visit with little or no success, I would've immediately driven somewhere, anywhere to unload that pos!
The Rock Creek was actually our second choice but we wanted a more truck based platform and the proven reliability of the old 4 Runner design. The new Toyotas have been having a lot of issues and I suspect the new Gen 4Runner will be the same.
Toyota can't be trusted either. They have some that will run forever, but all that plastic interior turns to hot garbage. You can't be brand loyal anymore if you plan to keep a vehicle more than 2 yrs. You must research trends... What may be a good vehicle now might not be 3 in 3 yrs. All manufacturers have good and bad vehicles. Most of them are bad. I wouldn't even consider a new Toyota right now, no matter what Scotty Kilmer says....which he is even turning on Toyota.
Oh, I should have added that I have had my 2010 Toyota Venza for 235 K mi and so far besides schedule Maintenace it hasn't been to the shop for anything, BTW I bought it new
That’s awesome! Yea the older tech Toyotas seem to run forever! That was my main reasoning for going with the old design 4 Runner. If you look at the used ones online it’s. Nothing to see them with hundreds of thousands of miles.
@@ChristianGrest My one and only complaint is the paint has peeled badly on the hood and top and that is after waxing it twice a year, I checked into a new paint job, and they said it would cost 7k
@@mikewhite2aadvocacy172 just out of curiosity, is you Venza made in Japan? @@mikewhite2aadvocacy172 yea should be on the sticker in the door way in the driver’s side. Just a thought, but many times if there’s a lot of complaints about paint, the manufacturer will cover it. Why didnt you buy or have Ford pay for an extended warranty before your 3 year 36K was over? It looks like you have 66K on it and it would still be under the extended warranty.
I had extended Ford Premium Care warranty to 125K. The lack of warranty wasn’t the issue, the constant problems and time in the shop was the main problem. Had 56k and was still under factory powertrain warranty, but being in the shop over 7 months was ludicrous.

The only drive ability issues I’ve had with the 10 speeds is maybe some gear hunting, but with so many gears it’s plain to see that it’ll shift more often. Now let's talk about that Sig-Sauer thing...
😉 You got it!
Toyotas are just the best made cars. They are not exciting but just keep going. I have a Lexus and only issue is squeaky console lid…compared to my last car-Mercedes S550- which I loved but always fixing stupid over engineered mechanicals.
You summed it up perfectly.
There are no good new cars anymore.
💯 facts
Mazda has been awesome since they kicked Ford out.
Witnessing these American companies allow failure has been a tough one to take.@@ChristianGrest
As for the 4R Limited trim it is quite nice.. it was either that or the Lexus GX460 which was very plush and equally good in terms of quality.
At one point I was going to purchase a ford lightening. After some dealership shenanigans I decided regardless Ford wasn’t for me.
Yea they’ve done downhill tremendously. Their EVs aren’t selling and they have way more complaints/warranty/QC issues than they did years ago.
@@ChristianGrest Ford Lightning sales were up 108% in September.
Good choice very proven not sure the 2025 will be as good but you got the best of the last V6
Yea time will tell on the 2025. It’s been fun getting to know our 2024. It’s a nice ride.
Yea it’s been a great ride so far. Hoping this thing lasts for decades.
Gee wiz... that experience is terrible.
Im still a Ford man. Over 200k on my Edge. I think if i want to spend $60k on a vehicle it will be on a 93 f-150 and just build it.
I’ve had good luck with older Dodges.
11:56 That looks like a good choice.
So far so good!
Glad the Gen 3 Raptor still running good. Mine just passed 27 K miles no issues so far.
I’m almost at 55K on the Raptor. Fingers crossed it continues to be problem free.
Did you try suing FORD through the Limon Law, I had heard that it is the way to go.
I did, but in my state I was past the age/mileage. Even though I had documented complaints during the first year it didn’t matter.
You should switch to GM. They have been good to me even though my truck has no major issues at all
I considered a couple of their SUVs as well as a Cadillac V series.
@@ChristianGrest strong motors.
Terrible customer care.
You got that right. Man it was such a sucky experience
@@ChristianGrest Sorry you had to deal with it.
@@atumre4705 yea me too. It’s over with, but thought it worthwhile to share. I held my tongue for so long trying to work things out.
Had a 2012 mustang gt with 80 thousand miles on it the steering just suddenly locked up while driving at 45 mph going into a corner and put me into a guardrail! I have been a ford guy since I was 18 now I'm going nissan
Wow man, that’s crazy! I actually used to have a 2013 Mustang and it was one of my all time favorite cars.
She’s a beaut! Congrats!
Thanks! Loving it so far!
As far a your Ford is concerned, after the first shop visit with little or no success, I would've
immediately driven somewhere, anywhere to unload that pos!
The Rock Creek was actually our second choice but we wanted a more truck based platform and the proven reliability of the old 4 Runner design. The new Toyotas have been having a lot of issues and I suspect the new Gen 4Runner will be the same.
Honeestly i dont know how everyone doesnt own a toyota
I’ve fought it for years. Always knew they made good stuff for the most part.
@@jonwoodworker I would only buy a non turbo, made in Japan Toyota
@@GroundSteak hence the 4Runner we purchased. Pretty good chance it’ll outlast most other vehicles. It’s not perfect, but should be reliable.

Seems from my research that the Toyotas made over there tend to have better paint and overall better quality during assembly. I painted corrected and ceramic coated the 4Runner right away and do a good job at taking care of my vehicles. Paint jobs are expensive! I want to have my Dad’s old 96’ F150 repainted, but it’s so expensive.
@@ChristianGrest From what I can tell it was made in Kentucky U.S.A.
@@mikewhite2aadvocacy172 yea should be on the sticker in the door way in the driver’s side.
Just a thought, but many times if there’s a lot of complaints about paint, the manufacturer will cover it. Lots of weird stuff like that, but worth researching. There was a frame recall on some Toyota Tacomas where owners had their entire frames replaced years later.
Well all cars made in the last 5 years suck
Hard to argue with that!
@@ChristianGrest I love all the technology in new cars but not willing to pay the high prices and deal with the maintenance headaches after the warranty is over. I needed a truck 4 years ago so I seached all over the US for 1st gen Tundra with low miles. Found an 06' with 38k miles for $15k. A few months ago decided I also wanted a large SUV to get the family around. Found an 06 Sequoia with 42k miles on it. Added new android auto head units to each along with backup cameras. @@derektunstall3924 this is why I daily drive my 96’ F-150. It’s about as basic as they come and simple to work on. The only issue I’ve ran into is that it’s getting harder and harder to find OEM parts and many of the aftermarket parts are sub par.
@@ChristianGrest I'd daily drive the Tundra but gas mileage is too bad for my 30 mile commute. Have a 2013 Camry as my daily driver. 175k miles on it and only minor repairs, under $1000, other than routine maintenance.
@@derektunstall3924 I hear you on gas mileage. I get around 15 in my 96’ 26-30 miles each way.

Sounds like it's a normal functioning 10 speed with overdrive
It’s an 8 speed. Never had these issues with any of the 10 speeds I’ve owned.
@@ChristianGrest the 8 and 10 speeds do the same quirks lag & studdering, missing gearbshifts, slamming into gear because it's just trying to always find the best gear for the gas milage. If there are no codes there's like not an issue, they design things so they can tell when it's not working correctly and replace unit instead of reapiring it. My 19 Ranger used to slam into 2nd all the time when I first got it I totally thought I was going to drive 1,000 miles and have to replace it, but here it is 3 years and 50k miles and I can't remember the last time I felt it slam into gear. Try driving in sport mode see if your issues are still there?
@@JustAverageJeff the Edge is gone. It wasn’t just the drivability issues it’s the fact that the transmission kept going out leaving us stranded and constantly being in the shop. Not trying to be smart, but did you watch the video?
A few hundred thousand miles with the 10 speeds in the F150s(2017 FX4, 2019 Raptor, 2021 Raptor) and haven’t experienced any of the issues I had with the Edge ST and it’s 8 speed. The only drive ability issues I’ve had with the 10 speeds is maybe some gear hunting, but with so many gears it’s plain to see that it’ll shift more often. Harder shifts in sport mode, but that’s also expected. I know folks have reported issues with their 10 speeds, but they’ve worked fine for me. I tow with them, off-road with them, daily drive and travel. Just rolled past 55K in my 2021 today coming back from a long trip. Not saying the 10 speeds are perfect, but my experience has been positive. Now just watch me jinx myself after saying that 🤣
@@ChristianGrest I get it Ford customer service is down there at the bottom these days. I'm hoping to get a diesel soon and I think the newest I'll go is 2020 just before COVID but before 2008 would be better because that's when all the companies started cost cutting on parts and the quality and reliability has just been getting worse and worse since that financial crisis. Hope we can go back to quality and service being the most important thing rather than how cheap they can do something to make the most profit in the smallest amount of time.
@@JustAverageJeff older is better for the most part. Not sure what I’ll end up with if my Raptor gives us a fit. We have Ford Premium ESP to 125K so we’re good for quite a while atleast. Ford makes pretty good, and great trucks... cars? not so much...
Hard to argue with that.
Nissan is a great option
The Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek was top of our list actually, but in the end we opted for more of a truck based suv instead of unibody/FWD based. Awesome sub though and probably one of the best values.
Not with Janco CVT transmissions. Seems the only Nissan worth its value is the Frontier.

Ford makes an affordable compact truck called the Maverick. Ford, wow the people love this thing let’s Jack up the price by 5k. It’s not just a Ford thing. Roll the dice and hope for the best.
