Just ran across your channel. Excellent job pulling the fifth wheel back up on the road. I was holding my breath! Edit: I just read your comment that you did it for free! What a guy!! That’s absolutely awesome!
One hell of a job. Good going. I had an issue with my first 5th wheel trailer that I tried to tow up a steep dirt road. I had a F350 2-wheel drive, and lost traction in the middle of a second hill. Being new I was going to try to back down a little way, but the trailer was not going the way I wanted. I was stuck and straight up scared. My wife was following me in my little ranger truck, so I had her get the dogs into the little truck. I couldn't get out because I had to keep my foot on the brake. Putting it in park, and it was still trying to roll back, so the brake helped hold it in place. Did I mention the couple hundred feet drop off, and being scared? I had her go get help, and she went to the farmers house at the bottom of the road. Mr. Billingsley came to my rescue. He got in front of me with his old green ex forest service Dodge pickup and hooked up a rope. Big rope. His truck helped me up that hill, and boy I was relieved. After we disconnected, he wanted to make sure I could make it up the last hill which was a few miles away, which that one was no problem. He said most people he has had to help usually were intoxicated and was glad I wasn't. (me too, but I dont drink and drive). We didnt have a lot of cash, but I did give him 80.00 dollars which he refused, but I told him to take his wife out on us. That was over 20 years ago, and we still go by his farm all the time. Most I have pulled up that hill since was an in-bed camper, and with our F450 4-wheel drive I can pull a car trailer with a jeep loaded on it, but never again will I pull our new 5th wheel up that hill. Just yesterday I joked to the wife that I was going to take our little toy hauler down the hill, she just no you are not. Going that was saves over 40 miles to get to our lot, but I have learned my lesson that its noy always better to go on a short cut.
That was scary! I have feared my camper going off an embankment at a few places. I'm not sure how I would have dealt with that!! That was awesome all that you did for that person and on your time and dime. I did learn some stuff watching this in hopes I will NEVER have to implement them... Thanks for sharing 👍

Great work gentleman, I'm glad it all worked out. From an almost full-time RV'er I will offer this, in nearly 99.9% of the time DISCONNECTING your trailer from your tow vehicle is not a good idea. This holds true to ALL 5ers, Goosenecks and bumper pulls. Best piece of advice, from experience; stop, re-evaluate the totality of the situation and seek assistance better sooner than later. It’s not the pulling…it’s the stopping. I can pull anything with a very light vehicle if it has enough torque and the correct gear ratio. The problems is stopping a 10,000 lb trailer with a truck that weighs 7,000 lbs. Even though the trailer has brakes, they are typically drum brakes that can assist the tow vehicle in stopping. The kinetic energy of the trailer at speed means it does not want to stop unless other forces exert a greater effort to overcome this energy. So the truck has to do most of the stopping on the trailer. This is what your towing factor is minister to. This doesn’t account for the 3,000 lbs of crap that was then thrown into the trailer. So most of these guys get a trailer that is at the upper limits of what they can stop. It’s not what they can pull. Don’t get that confused. Then with the added weight they are well past what they can safely stop. Then they get on the freeway and drive 75 miles an hour.
Yeah they building these RV heavily to compete with there Competitors, try to make it more like a home when they should just leave it alone. There's two and a half bath upstairs five queen size bed all of this needs of stop

And this is why you need to make sure where you are going when towing campers. Just because you can boondock doesn't mean you can get to the place to boondock. These guys did a fantastic job!
I’ve been to all 50 states and most of the way across Canada on a motorcycle, traveling with what I could stuff in my saddlebags. For the life of me, I will NEVER understand why people think that pulling a HOUSE behind a $50,000 pickup truck is a good way to travel.
I rode MC's with the wife for 12 years. She rode her own MC off and on during those 12 years. What I hated most was the unpacking/packing up every night in a hotel. Site seeing was limited to getting off the bike and short hikes. Stuck in a boring hotel room at night. With our trailer we can go the same places we did on our MC's but can stay and enjoy where we are for multiple days. No boring closed in hotel rooms eating fattening food in restaurants. We mainly quit riding 14 years ago when texting became popular. Too many dim witted teenagers playing on their phones while driving. It was just not as much fun anymore always being in hyper defensive mode.
You put your motorcycle in the back of that house. Tow it to your destination. Then ride your motorcycle everywhere. Think of it as a portable hotel room but nicer that you never have to pack and unpack. 😎
My goodness! Early in the video, I thought, “This is going to be impossible to recover!” WELL DONE! I am sure the owner felt horrible about the entire situation. Virtual hug!
Very nice recovery. All the people saying his truck was insufficient for the trailer make me laugh. It is plenty truck for it when operating them on roads they were designed for. This was not one of those roads and that's why he got into this bad situation.
Great job, guys. Y'all did some awesome work getting that trailer out. And bringing all of the right tools & straps & most of all, knowledge. Great video.
Not that surprised no-one else wanted anything to do with that recovery.. Although maybe an excavator would have made it a lot easier.. Sometimes what you have has to be enough..
Really well done guys and well thought out. For those reading if you ever unhook a trailer on a hill WHEEL CHALK THE CRAP OUT OF IT! It's amazing how easily a big heavy trailer can overcome 1 or 2 wheel chalks. Do every tire as high as you reasonably can. If you're really in a pickle send a ratchet strap or chain throigh the wheels of both axles to create a parking brake of sorts. Yes it will suck to get off if tensionis on it but much better then loosing your load.
A) Why would you bring something that big down road that steep and small? B) I bet when that thing started sliding he thought he'd never see it again. C) I'm amazed at your level of planning each time I watch. Great job.
@Penny-mk7fv The truck will pull a fully loaded farm house up that hill, if it could maintain traction. The weight in the truck is reduced on the hill from the angle of pull. He would have been well advised to move weight from the camper to the truck and maintain his speed on the hill. Losing traction was the failure point. Unhooking was the worst thing to do...
@Penny-mk7fv The truck hooked to the trailer is a 1 ton dodge ram 3500...The tow company has an F-150 as a support vehicle. You may need to watch again while sober.
@Penny-mk7fv the point is the truck doing the towing was not an F-150 which you kept on incorrectly stating. There's a world of difference between an F-150 and a 3500.
This trailer is HUGE. Who would ever think they could go up a hill with it with a high powered pickup truck? I see tractor trailer semi's hauling mobile homes this size on a flat freeway.
I'm in AZ and spent the better part of 30 years hauling concrete. I'm amazed still at the people who are either clueless about grades and gravity. They're either just dumb or think they can defy gravity and build houses in the dumbest locations. They still try and get us up on the sides of mountains. How many times I've just said no. After being places I shouldn't have put a mixer truck. Great job you all and amazing recovery!
Your attitude is all wrong. Of course most people who don’t do heavy hauling are clueless about grades. With your experience, you should take pity on those who don’t have it. I bet you’re a great mentor too 😂
WOW! Great job!! And thats the difference between 'recovery' guys and 'towing' guys. Recovery guys take the time to do it right. Towing guys just want to hook and run. What was he doing down in that hole with that camper anyway?
He volunteered to work for a guy at the bottom for free parking He had no idea how bad it was until he turned in By then it was too late He worked down there for about 2 weeks Finished up and went to leave to go to a new job location and couldn’t make it
Amazing job guys, hats off! 🎉 I was quite worried if the camper would crash the truck. More worry was if any of the bands or cords snap, it could cut a person in half. Thank God everyone stayed safe ❤ Very bad design of this camper. It’s huge but on a weak chassis. Even the hitch is made cheaply.
This is unfortunately a very common occurrence, I'm amazed it is at least a 3500, there are way more pulling those big toy haulers with 2500's. And those same guys say Im "Overkill" pulling my 34ft fifthwheel with a Ram 3500 DRW High output max tow package... But I have the payload and brakes to deal with any manufactured RV, now traction is another story, I would not go up a road like this without scouting it before.
Yeah, completely agree with you there stinson87. That truck is way to small for that trailer. But the sales guy didn't tell him that, lol. These rv ers need to do the math before buying one of those trailers or get a way bigger truck. They are a danger on the road otherwise.
@@GregMomtoya that is very true. I was actually amazed when I heard that our local RV dealership refused someone of moving their newly purchased RV since they showed up with an F150 to move a Momentum 320G, not a massive RV but a dry pin weight of 2300lbs and UVW of 12400lbs...
Great to see that during the winching process that there were not loads of potential bodies hanging around the winch ropes its good that they were well out the way and congratulations on the recovery a job well done
Damn... Terrific! I'm sending this one over to Matt's Off Road Recovery. You are amazing at this recovery and I think Matt would enjoy seeing this one!
I don’t think your home boy Casey could have done it better with his 5 rotators. 😂. The reason I say 5 it would take 3 just to get the first two out of the hole. Then a D9 hooked to that silly friction ring to drag them up the hill. 😂
That was a heart-stopping maneuver! As a camper, I was horrified for the owner, and watched while holding my breath a lot. NICE JOB, OFF ROAD RECOVERY! I hate mountains; I’ll stay in Florida, thank you. At my age, I don’t want that kind of drama. Loved the information about chain strength - a great bonus of information.
You would totally wrong and have no idea what you're talking about been doing this for years with a 2500 HD Duramax and that would pull that all day long
@@IceColdGeico if that was a hill that steep and he was loaded to the max... Then maybe not having the momentum.... On that type of a dirt road I would have switched to 4wh and hit it.
If he has insurance, I would love to hear him tell them what he did. It is most likely trashed and needs more work to be fix than it's worth. Is resale is nor worth shit either after this.
This actually had me on the edge of my seat the little. It’s really cool that you help them like this and hopefully they had good insurance to help cover it.
Insurance wouldn’t cover it since he unhooked it We did not charge him a penny Everything he owned was in the camper and was his full time home So we couldn’t charge him he has enough issues to deal with than a huge wrecker bill
If it was me , there would be a car come through every 5 minutes. If he couldnt make the hill why didnt he pull into the area where you did the rigging in , that looked fairly level
Sorry didn’t see the second part of your question So he was going up the hill loosing traction and sliding back He attempted several several times By the time he was giving up The trailer was already in the ditch area So he could not back it up or go around the corner So he was stuck Can’t go backwards And Can’t go forward He was hoping to rehook on a different angle
A dually has less weight capacity than single tires. The extra weight of the tires, is deducted from the total weight capacity. I have a friend who buys F350s, and never goes for a dually due to the difference in weight. He pulls heavy equipment
Sorry for the inconvenience, just popped up on my screen, y'all have a wonderful 4th and god bless yall. Stay safe, and keep cool out there. Stuff happens to us all. Thanks for sharing your journey. We all have them. Have a great day 👍🏻
I like it when you talk about load weights and snatch blocks and when you do the math - the technical stuff. You used to draw arrows and show snatch block placements. That was also interesting.
Fantastic recovery. If the guy is lucky, he'll be able to get it fixed up enough to use until he scraps it. Great job people! Enough winch power, with some planning and thought makes things go smoothly!

Yeah because that diesel should have pulled that camper anywhere and not need three vehicles. They need to change that road up

Don’t feel bad, this is life. You fix the problem and go on!
Great teamwork to recover that camper safely!
Excellent work! Some things just don't belong off road and that trailer looks overloaded.
Damn fine piece of rigging once again. I wished you would have let her pull him up the hill with the F 150, that would have been some viral footage right there!👍😂
Wow!! The stress I had while watching! Couldn’t imagine the stress of being there ! You guys are great!!!
Hey Matt & ALL Helpers !!! Great recovery as always !!!! Thanks for the videos & this will be a great introduction to your channel for sure in that area !!! Ga. & FL. can't compete with this !!! 🤔🙄🤠😎👍👍👍👍👍
Definitely a different world here
And this is why you need to make sure where you are going when towing campers. Just because you can boondock doesn't mean you can get to the place to boondock. These guys did a fantastic job!
Awesome rigging that show's how using a winch a a few snatch blocks u can pull really heavy trucks with campers out of bad places great recovery
Totally agree
women
Well that's easy to understand. It's not you doing it, so it's not meant for you to understand, anymore then people wondering why you ride a bike.
The owner needs to rename his camper Off Road Warrior! Nice work!
OUTSTANDING!!!! FIVE STARS!!!!!
Art from Ohio
Man, that's a behemoth trailer for that truck. Good work getting that beast out!
Yeah, I’m certain he was way over the ratings for the truck. A rig that size definitely requires a dually rear axle.
Amazing work everyone did to move that camper !
Omg that’s a beast of a caravan it’s lucky you had the pulling power that last hillside was steep great video my regards to the camera lady 👍🤟👍
Great job, guys. Y'all did some awesome work getting that trailer out. And bringing all of the right tools & straps & most of all, knowledge. Great video.
Man, that was amazing. Great job. I was a lot of work, but man you pulled it off.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job. And I must commend you for your understanding of Rigging, Sling Angle Stress etc... Very safety oriented given the situation.
Well, you got him out- nice work. He should be running a dually to pull that toy hauler.
I would have something much bigger than a Dually. That Trailer is heavier than an empty 53' box Trailer
Ford rangers got that all day!
Dually isn’t going to fix stupid. lol
@@mikehoncho4472 Wow, straight to the point. 😄
Dually will not help people are stupid
Man, that was so good of you to try and help that guy out!!!! He was in a bad way. You came through!!
The laws of physics still apply to super-sized RV trailers, both going and coming. Great recovery 👍
Matt’s the best recovery rigger there is, hands down.
You all did an incredible job on an impossible situation. With enough rope, pulleys and determination you can do amazing things.
Not that surprised no-one else wanted anything to do with that recovery.. Although maybe an excavator would have made it a lot easier.. Sometimes what you have has to be enough..
I was thinking an excavator and dozer could get that out of there
Really well done guys and well thought out.
Great job.
It happens a lot camping places on stretches like this. It is fine if you make it they have turnarounds and stuff.
@Penny-mk7fv a dodge ram 3500. The one with the busted and then welded fifth wheel hitch. The black one hooked to the trailer for the entire video.
@Penny-mk7fv the point is the truck doing the towing was not an F-150 which you kept on incorrectly stating. There's a world of difference between an F-150 and a 3500.
In Alaska we have HUGE semi wrecker recovery for big 5th wheels & motorhomes.
This trailer is HUGE. Who would ever think they could go up a hill with it with a high powered pickup truck? I see tractor trailer semi's hauling mobile homes this size on a flat freeway.
Tractor Trailers for me to tow that house. But for the life of me why so big.
thats a toy hauler, it has a car or utv in the back of it as well :)
Where WERE they going with that rig on those narrow mountain roads?
Physics in action. Real life stuff. 👍🏾
I want to see the video when he comes back down the hill
That hitch adapter that he used to move the pin back because of his short bed truck looked very weak. Too much trailer not enough truck!
I bet you’re a great mentor too 😂
Those leaf spring brackets broke on my trailer just under normal use :) Had to reinforce all of them. Great job on the recovery!
WOW! Great job!! And thats the difference between 'recovery' guys and 'towing' guys. Recovery guys take the time to do it right. Towing guys just want to hook and run. What was he doing down in that hole with that camper anyway?
He volunteered to work for a guy at the bottom for free parking
He had no idea how bad it was until he turned in
By then it was too late
He worked down there for about 2 weeks
Finished up and went to leave to go to a new job location and couldn’t make it
Amazing job guys, hats off! 🎉
I was quite worried if the camper would crash the truck.
More worry was if any of the bands or cords snap, it could cut a person in half. Thank God everyone stayed safe ❤
Very bad design of this camper. It’s huge but on a weak chassis.
Even the hitch is made cheaply.
What do you wanna bet there's a 2,000-pound side-by-side in the back of that toy hauler.
GREAT recovery!! HatsOff2U!! Absolutely crazy ( read....brainless) to take that camper DOWN that road in the first place!
How he ever thought that Trailer matched the tow rig is beyond me
Black on black maybe???
That is more than enough truck for that trailer. It's a 3500 Cummins. What do you think it requires a Peterbilt?
@@GregMomtoya that is very true. I was actually amazed when I heard that our local RV dealership refused someone of moving their newly purchased RV since they showed up with an F150 to move a Momentum 320G, not a massive RV but a dry pin weight of 2300lbs and UVW of 12400lbs...
Hi Matt, l live in the UK that was amazing recovery between you all well done thanks for taking us along with you
So very impressive. Great job.
Feel bad for the owner, but you guys did a 10/10 job. Just awesome.
If he had scouted that terrain beforehand maybe he would have known that trailer was too big for the truck. That's a hiway rig not a backwoods rig.
Great to see that during the winching process that there were not loads of potential bodies hanging around the winch ropes its good that they were well out the way and congratulations on the recovery a job well done
Good to see you back at it.
Damn...
😂 he wishes he was our home boy
lol that is true
That was a heart-stopping maneuver! As a camper, I was horrified for the owner, and watched while holding my breath a lot. NICE JOB, OFF ROAD RECOVERY! I hate mountains; I’ll stay in Florida, thank you. At my age, I don’t want that kind of drama. Loved the information about chain strength - a great bonus of information.
That truck is way overloaded!!! He never should have been pulling that monster with that 3500 mega cab sw truck! 😅😂😅
You would totally wrong and have no idea what you're talking about been doing this for years with a 2500 HD Duramax and that would pull that all day long
@@M_J_Glide_22 Except up hill, apparently.
@@IceColdGeico if that was a hill that steep and he was loaded to the max... Then maybe not having the momentum.... On that type of a dirt road I would have switched to 4wh and hit it.
@@M_J_Glide_22 OVERLOADED!
@M_J_Glide_22 no just the Carrington capacity of a one ton mega cab
Great job on that recovery. Owner sure has a lot of repair work ahead. That thing looked like the size of a small house!
Wow, that dude is lucky!
It's Amazing How That Trailer Looks Wicked, With Them Little Lights in The Front. They look like eyes that are watching you.
I bet ya a dollar bill that Lippert Frame is trashed
My thoughts exactly. That camper is trash.
If he has insurance, I would love to hear him tell them what he did. It is most likely trashed and needs more work to be fix than it's worth. Is resale is nor worth shit either after this.
Hills and switch backs have a favorite food… fifth wheels and trailers
Damn impressive work
I can imagine how he felt when that toy hauler started going over the cliff in slow motion. Hands in your head yelling NO!
The break away brakes only work if the wheels are already rolling. They aren’t designed for parking.
EOH brakes will hold at any time
Not true
@@jefflangille2882 very true, they dont rely on wheel spin to engage, pump activated
This actually had me on the edge of my seat the little. It’s really cool that you help them like this and hopefully they had good insurance to help cover it.
Insurance wouldn’t cover it since he unhooked it
We did not charge him a penny
Everything he owned was in the camper and was his full time home
So we couldn’t charge him he has enough issues to deal with than a huge wrecker bill
@@matt.mckinzie Wow, ok. I appreciate you guys for that and the world needs more like you.
Subscribed.
If it was me , there would be a car come through every 5 minutes. If he couldnt make the hill why didnt he pull into the area where you did the rigging in , that looked fairly level
Luckily there’s only like 4 houses in this mile stretch
Sorry didn’t see the second part of your question
So he was going up the hill loosing traction and sliding back
He attempted several several times
By the time he was giving up
The trailer was already in the ditch area
So he could not back it up or go around the corner
So he was stuck
Can’t go backwards
And
Can’t go forward
He was hoping to rehook on a different angle
Ok that makes sense
Road Warrior 😀 Not so much, but that big boy headed down the mountain was no match for Matt. Amazing stuff!!!
This size trailer should require a dually.
Wouldn't have made a difference
A dually has less weight capacity than single tires. The extra weight of the tires, is deducted from the total weight capacity. I have a friend who buys F350s, and never goes for a dually due to the difference in weight. He pulls heavy equipment
Dude knows his stuff! GREAT VIDEOS AND GOD BLESS!
Stupidity is good for business
Sorry for the inconvenience, just popped up on my screen, y'all have a wonderful 4th and god bless yall. Stay safe, and keep cool out there. Stuff happens to us all. Thanks for sharing your journey. We all have them. Have a great day 👍🏻
That's team work and engineering at its finest! Situation like this are almost like reinviting the wheel lol good job guys
Thought this was amateur hour for a bit.. Matt's offroad wouldn't have had him out in 5 minutes with just the banana
