I found a reasonable deal on a Toyota tundra last week so I went out to have a look. It was a 2021 fully loaded platinum with 29k miles. It had some wear and tear (paint chips, door ding and the back vinyl seat had a pattern in it where something sat on it for a long time in the summer so now that pattern is permanent) but it was a good truck. They were asking 49k which is high but I thought they would negotiate. Wrong. When they added everything up the price ballooned to 56k! I laughed at the salesman’s face! I said no way. 56k for a truck with 30k miles? The MSRP in 2021 with 0 miles was 61k! There’s no way I’m going to pay that. I said I’d put 25k down on the truck right now if they make the price 46k. I even have the financing worked out. There’s no need to run my history I’m pre-qualified 100% for this and they wouldn’t move! I couldn’t believe it! I walked right TF out of there shaking my head. I would have been the easiest sale this month but nope. So I’m gonna wait. These prices need to drop significantly
They don’t make money if you put that much down and are pre-qualified and finance elsewhere. Approximately 55% of the money they make is off financing. Do an article on Harley Davidson. You'll find 2 years old units on the showroom floor that they still want full list price on. If not more. In addition to that, you'll find aftermarket bling, not Harley Davidson parts, installed. As well as the markups to reflect that.
The quality is so terrible on every manufacturer now that lot rot is a real thing to look for. The dealers are now marking up also by spraying undercoating to cover the rust and convince the customer that it's a really good thing. Look for fresh undercoating, it's apparent and a disguise.
The corporations don't control inflation they just experience it. Can't lower prices because the costs are already up 60%. But can't keep prices high because the consumer is broke. If they didn't raise prices and milk it they would still be in this exact same position just with less money in the bank.
My grandpa drove a ford platinum for YEARS. He had a blue one for a long time and then got a new white one, but he decided recently to switch to a GMC. I sold my 392 Daytona Charger to Carvana in 2022. They gave me what I had paid for it new in 2018. I banked $20k and began looking for a truck.
Truck prices were through the roof, so I stayed patient. I found a 2023 RAM this July that never sold. The dealer added over $13k in upgrades (wheels, tires, lift, power side steps, bed liner, tint, etc).
The MSRP on the truck was $65k, plus the upgrades had the final price sitting just under $80k. They were running an Internet special for $63k.
I went in and was able to negotiate $58k OUT THE DOOR (Tax, Title, etc). If you're patient, you can catch dealers in desperate spots 💯

Vehicle prices aren't based on a fixed profit from manufacturing. They are based on what you can afford to finance.
These auto makers (including Toyota) probably agreed with each other on increasing truck prices by 35%-40%. They thought the buyers will get used to it, and love the 1-2% discount. All I see is plastic and eco 4 turbo everywhere. 70k for a truck is insane. I wonder what people using these trucks for.
That's illegal in almost every country... but they could have just been watching each-other and all figured if they see others doing it, they can do it too... but if they actually met and discussed it, they'd be looking at huge legal problems.

If sales went down 19% and the price went up 56%, then they are still in profit, we are just too poor to afford this brand.
Channels like this have been putting out videos for months with titles like this, and yet, still no collapse (at least that I can tell).
Agree... And it's not just vehicles. Doom and gloom across the board.
That said... As long as there are upper middle class/lower upper class people buying things at ridiculous prices (cause they can), this nonsense will continue.
I worked in manufacturing (retired back in July) for many years. You would be surprised at how many white collar, six figure income guys drive these loaded, luxury trucks. They'll pay $80-$100K for a BMW or Mercedes, why not pay the same for a Ford, Chevy or Dodge pickup truck?
I work for a dealer and we have the three big hitters, Chevy, Ford and Ram. I can say we sale a ton more Silverado’s than we do Rams.
No love lost here. It's called corporate greed and it's finally caught up with them and I just feel they're getting what they put out there. The only problem is it's the workers that get the brunt of the catastrophe caused by executives. And all they want to do is keep everything the way it was and keep bringing their money in and they're discovering that's a no go and then includes the Japanese car makers too, and German.

Never tell them anything about financing until you have agreed on the OTDP and then negotiate financing then tell them how much you are putting down.
I was at a dealer last weekend and I told them $70,000 for a pickup is too much and they said they could take 10,000 of msrp
Hope you said 50% off and then you could talk otherwise 60k is still too damn much.
There is also some to be said about instant depreciation of expensive $80k vehicles, like $20k after 1 year ownership.

The corporations don't control inflation they just experience it. Can't lower prices because the costs are already up 60%. But can't keep prices high because the consumer is broke. My grandpa drove a ford platinum for YEARS. He had a blue one for a long time and then got a new white one, but he decided recently to switch to a GMC.
