I've owned both Toyotas and Hondas. They are very similar. Both are reliable, longevity is where they separate. The Honda will go to the salvage yard around 230K miles. The Toyota will go on for another 100K miles. Easily. And he's right about cars with turbos and CVT transmission. Pass on them. Mazdas are OK. Nissans are crap.

Yep, that's been my experience too. Unless you're willing to drop another 4 or 5k into repairs on the Honda to keep it roadworthy after that mileage. Of course there are exceptions- depending on the model and engine, and how well the vehicle has been maintained, for example- but I've found what you said to be the general rule.

Most naturally-aspirated engines today are still longer-term headache because they are 100% direct-injection & no supplemental port-injection. That's means carbon-sludge buildup because cleaning additives in top tier fuel can't physically hit half of what they need to in the engine to prevent it. Most Toyota engines today are combination direct & port injection, unlike Honda, Mazda, & basically everyone else. Still, overall Toyota quality has still gone downhill over the last tech-bloat decade, just like Honda & everyone else, & Toyota dealerships are about as crooked as they come for price-gouging over MSRP.

The old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" was Toyota's stance on long term reliability. Tried and true engines and over-all quality were once the Toyota standard. Sadly, they have joined the pool of cost cutting measures. They can redeem as they did in the early 2000's when issue of the 4cyl was a problem. Our naturally aspirated 2023 RAV4 is a keeper, but the 2024 Crown (Platinum, made in Japan which is supposed to equal better quality control) that I was talked into buying, I see as a trade-in in two years. Turbos mixed with a hybrid...not sure of longevity once the standard of Toyota

We got more than what we owned on the Tacoma via a trade-in, and the dealership did not even have the Tacoma on the lot before someone bought it. That naturally aspirate V6, adios. I regret being manipulated into the Crown purchase, although it is an awesome car.

@@jimmywalters3071 Only when the 9 speed transmission is in S or sport mode is when I noticed it shifting down a lot but in D or drive I though it performed really well. I'm not a big fan of the push button transmission because I accidentally pushed the D button twice a few times and unintentionally put it in sport mode and it down shifted a lot. I had no problems with the V6 although I never towed anything really heavy but I did load the bed with 4x8 sheets of drywall, plywood, 2x4s and around ten 80 lb bags of cement which it hauled perfectly. I hate metal beds with bed liners but I like the composite bed a lot. You can stack house block in it and it doesn't damage the composite at all. Timing belts aren’t all that bad. By replacing the tensioners and pulleys, along with the water pump, you keep all that stuff in good working order. Timing chains aren’t forever, not if it’s an OHC engine. The chain stretches, the tensioners and pulleys get overlooked as well as the fuel pump. I used to think they were dumb, but now that I understand engines better, I don’t mind that much.

Great summary. In our family, we have Toyota Honda and Mazda. But the bottom line is you can’t buy the brand anymore You gotta buy a drivetrain. all of these brands are struggling with technological change. My guess is that Honda V6 will go through some thing when they decide to try to squeeze a little more emissions out of it. They don’t want to, they are forced too. I understand this is true and the Mazda lineup as well, Some of the latest have untested drive trains with plenty to go wrong. I think that all car manufacturers can continuously improve year over year. The reason they can't is US government increasing regulation on fuel consumption and making them re-design critical components.
But the other reason is planned obsolescence. They've realized much of their existence depends on replacing parts and selling new cars. They've just made cars last so long since the 90's that people can keep the same cars up to 20+ years. They want to sell more cars!

Want this to go away? Stop voting Democrat they are the reason all these rules exist. What they want to do now is make Gas autos problematic so you will want to switch to EV. So you have two options left buy an old goody and restore it to new. I noticed old Ford trucks have went up in value because people are doing just that. They can't afford the price of modern trucks and are now buying up old trucks and putting new engines and transmissions in them.

Hi Ahmad, that’s also a fun one and both have benefits. A slightly older vehicle, Lexus would be a more reliable choice but now with turbo 4s replacing the V6, the Acuras now have a little bit of a trump card. New Lexus Hybrid is quite reliable because their e CVT is bulletproof and matched up with the reliable NA 4 cylinder engines likely would be a better bet, however it’s close. Acura and the smaller cars like the integra using the 1.5 turbo and or CVT is to be avoided in my opinion when looking at Lexus.

A good brand to compare to Honda and Toyota in this segment would have been Mazda. In terms of affordable vehicles that aren't considered luxury class, they make some of the most durable vehicles in the market. Their Skyactiv-G engines are used in many of their models and they can usually be purchased as non-turbo or turbo, depending on the buyer's preference. They also seem to have one of the more efficient engines when compared to Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, etc, and the overall build quality has improved significantly over the past 10 years. I'm not sure if Toyota had something to do with improving the build quality, but Toyota does have a 5% stake in Mazda so I'm sure there's been some collaboration between the two companies.
Since the Skyactiv-G engine is so heavily used across their entire product line and it's been around since 2011, all of the kinks have likely been worked out. They did have issues with the turbo engines a few years back, but all newer turbo models should be okay to buy. In any case if buying for long term reliability and longevity stick with a non-turbo Mazda.

Tech-bloat & rampant cost-cutting to increase profit margins has hurt the quality of all brands versus what they were 10-20 years ago before all that tech-bloat & certain regulations that resulted in some longer-term unreliable/problematic engine/transmission tech to meet those regulations (belt/chain CVTs, Small-displacement turbo engines, 100% direct-inject engines, cylinder-deactivation, start/stop, etc.). Almost every owner of turbo engines don't realize that after your destination should run the engine for a minute. Engine oil also cools the turbo that's at over 2 k degrees. It's causing the fins on the turbo to break off into the engine. It's the temperature of hot and cold breaking down the turbo. Over 6 k to replace the turbo if not also the engine.
Hybrid engines have a fast excellaration to take off. The gas engine then is engaged.
Toyota 2.5 engine is the best engine to buy for longevity.
