Yes! Me too!!! Even in her 20s she was way too young to make such decisions marrying a MUCH MUCH older man , she would've outgrown as he aged, ... And given up her whole life ...
      I. Think it's ridiculous that they force them to choose like that, but yes, it's very good she knew ..
I've given up so much just for love in my life ..
Almost 50..... Lost my car, home .... the partner I loved so much was poor, alcoholic, and had medical issues ... I was very devoted ...
He ended up running off to party with a bunch of wild hags, a year before he passed away off cancer.... Because I couldn't keep up with his drinking anymore...
But I was still loving to him until the end ..
I believe love would always win, and come before a bunch of shallow crap,... BUT....
I would also warm people to be sensible, use common sense ...
No body should ever really HAVE TO be in such a position to be forced to choose love OR their own life, stability, comfort, safety, etc. Or a great love, and have to SUFFER for love
      I. Promise there's NO glory in it;!!!! I've been walking fire over a year, or just treated at home with no car, stuck at my mom's, and left completely broken....for FAILING to put my own priorities as much more important than I did!!!! And put the needs and demands of love first...
      So be careful
It will depend on the situation!!!

It wasn’t just the money though, Margaret would’ve been ostracized by the family and the public. That’s what happened to her uncle, King Edward VIII, who abdicated because his marriage to an American divorcée was unacceptable so he was forced to choose between her and the monarchy. He still benefited from being a Royal but was shunned by pretty much everybody for the rest of his life.

    • @LilyUnicorn
      @LilyUnicorn Рік тому

No and no. That church existed before Henry did.
You are talking about papal authority which was restored breifly by Queen Mary and King Philip. Then challemged again. The Elizabethan settlement was also routinely reinterpretted and changed based on the Act of Supremacy of 1558.
Basically that history is far older and more confusing than the one brief point that one king removed papal authority, which was restored again...then removed again.
The Church and Government are NOT separate and the Monarch of the UK is literally the supreme head of the Church of England. They have no choice but to live their life ruled by other church going priests and what not. You can lose your succession to the throne if you dare even suggest Separatipn of Church and State.

Also the change of the rule allowing the royals to marry a divorced person was made when Harry was a child to allow a divorced Princess Ann to marry her current husband and Charles to eventually marry Camilla. The Queen wouldn't allow her sister to marry a divorced man and her uncle had to give up the throne to marry a divorced woman but the Queens children didn't have to give up anything to marry who they loved. Heck Charles had an affair while married and now he and that mistress are the heads of the Church of England.

You got a lot of the details wrong here. Elizabeth was the one who said “bad luck, he’s married,“ not Margaret, Elizabeth was 18 at the time. Peter and Margaret didn’t start a relationship until the early 50s, after Townsend’s wife had already left him for another man, they were still legally married, but she had officially been out in public and attended royal events as a couple with her new man so everybody in society knew that they were estranged and no longer living together. There’s this narrative that Margaret was a homewrecker, but that wasn’t true because Mrs. Townsend had cheated already, and separated from her husband before Peter ever got involved with Margaret.

    • @georgielancaster1356
      @georgielancaster1356 Рік тому +2

Let's not forget PT was a WW2 fighter pilot hero.
He was one of the worshipped 'Few' Most women 'melted' around WW2 pilots. Especially Battle of Britain fighter pilots. They were seen as incredibly glamorous and brave. I cannot think of anyone, in modern life, who carries the glamour he did.
None of which was sought by him, but just came with his wartime job.
Having a crush at 13, as a female, is far from unusual. What is unusual, is that she stayed besotted - and in many ways, it is understandable. What young man in the 50's could compete with Townsend's bravery, handsomeness and perfect gallantry? I am quite sure it was Margaret that chased him down.
There is a far better picture of PT's new Belgian wife. She looked a lot more like Margaret, in that.
The Firm told Margaret she would have to live a commoner's life, no extra money, no social importance or servants, etc. The picture painted was a small but nice suburban house in a posh suburb in London. Where she would stay home, have children and knit.
In fact, Margaret could have had a grace and favour apartment in London, she could have had a 'cottage' at Balmoral, for holidays, she would have had a sizable allowance, and she would have had lovely country estates offered by society suck ups, her god parents, etc and would have lived a truly charmed life. They would have had EASILY, a similar life of glamour as the worthless Duke and Duchess of Windsor, if that was what they wanted.
She was persuaded her options were not as charming and effortless as she had imagined. But her decision was basically shallow and I think, rather shameful. All about position.
AA-J was a society 'bad boy' insofar as the stuffy usual husbands would be. He had showbiz, artistic glamour and was hung like a horse...
It was a brittle, almost, two fingers by Margaret. And it bit her hard in revenge.
He soon loathed her, and would leave messages in her underwear drawer, all around the house, telling her how much he loathed and despised her. However trying she was, that is really cruel. And of course, he was cheating on her right through the whole of their relationship. Not one part of the wooing was without his cheating. Let alone the marriage. It was almost like A-J decided she was loathesome but good sex, and set out to marry her to make her life truly miserable. To punish her for being something he despised.
A-J was quite charming to the rest of the family. Even knowing the great disaster the marriage was...
I wonder if the Queen lived with huge guilt that she followed her mother's advice about preventing the Townsend marriage? I think, as ever, she followed the advice of ministers - most of whom were extraordinary hypocrites, her mother, and the church reps, (need I say any more?).
The Queen always went with conservative duty - and seeing the emotional disasters it caused in her early reign, I think she was much more understanding in her later reign.

Celebs are more profitable when deceased im afraid. Smh if it makes u feel better the world is just a stage remember? Everyone with a spotlight on them is there because they were put there and given a script and role to play..including the royal family. Nothing is organic or real..its all just a smoke screen to hide whats happening behind closed doors. Saying all that to say my guess is even her 'love letters' would at most be fake at best heavily edited for the public consumption. Its all contrived and controlled so dont feel too badly for her lack of personal privacy regarding matters of the heart..most likely it isnt her words honestly being released i guarantee it. I understand shes deceased and all and wont care but for morality sake dont u think some things should stay private and not every aspect of these ppls lives need to be exploited and shared with the world? I mean if u had a diary growing up during ur weird (possibly sexually frustrated years as a teen) would u be ok with Anyone reading your most private thoughts at any time? "These are unlikely to include Margaret's letters. In 1959, she wrote to Townsend in response to him informing her of his remarriage plans, accusing him of betraying their vow not to marry anyone else and requesting her love letters to him be destroyed. He claimed he complied with her wishes, but kept this letter and an envelope of burned shards of the vow she had sent, eventually destroying these also."
Not a whole lot to reveal with burnt letters. But also..... Also she was 13 when she chased after him. An adult in the royal military. No. Just no.
Former governess Marion Crawford wrote in her memoir: "Impulsive and bright remarks she made became headlines and, taken out of their context, began to produce in the public eye an oddly distorted personality that bore little resemblance to the Margaret we knew."

Margaret and Peter looked very much like soulmates, they even looked alike to an extent. But Margaret chose to keep her titles and her Royal life when the queen gave her the ultimatum. It was her choice not to marry him in the end. No one ever told her that she couldn’t marry him; what she was told rather was that she would have to give up her titles if she chose to do so, and she wasn’t ready to give those away. I am sure that it stung when later the queen allowed for Anne to marry a commoner without any conditions, but in the end we are our own choices. I’ve never exactly been one for romance, have always been more of a cynic, but in such a circumstance I know what I would have chosen. Princesses are miserable. I would have chosen my happiness. I know that she would later go on to love her husband too, but that was an unhappy marriage, and Peter seemed like a much better match.
