  • There’s no doubt that Antony Armstrong-Jones led a charmed life-yet he also had a serious penchant for scandal. His success brought him into the stratosphere of the royal family, but he left a trail of broken hearts in his wake.

@@clambroth1923 Yes, I’m 62. I know about the history of Edward VIII abdicating for Wallis Simpson. The rule was the king had to marry a virgin so that any child born after the marriage was presumed to be the biological child of the king. That rule ruled out Wallis Simpson as someone whom Edward could marry as long as he remained king. Edward abdicated without informing Wallis what he was about to do. She was horrified when she found out what he had done. She felt he caused her to feel obligated to marry him after he had taken given up his throne to be with her. So she married him to save face. But she was very angry with him because she did not intend to marry him. Those close to the couple always spoke about how much Edward adored Wallis over the years of their marriage. But toward the end, the couple had many arguments. So it was not such a happy marriage after all.

If Princess Margaret's father had lived, she'd have probably settled down with some nice old money baron and been comparatively content. She adored her father, and would not have wanted to disappoint him. His death was the beginning of her rebellious period, especially since she lost her sibling when Elizabeth became monarch. George VI would never have let his daughter, his "joy," marry that scoundrel. And she would have obeyed, because he was her father, not her sister.

It is described in his authorized biography from 2008. Having read the article, I developed the opinion that AAJ was a real piece of work. Princess Margaret couldn’t marry an intelligent and talented man who had served brilliantly in the military because he was divorced but she was permitted to marry a man who had a very questionable life style.

@@meichong8278. BTW, if you want more information about something such as this, it isn’t correct to ask for “proof.” The only way to prove it is to have a photographic record as evidence, clearly showing the person in the act. It is something that cannot be presented in such a format as this. Regardless if you were the participant, or someone else was the participant or you were an observer, no one believes anything anyone says without “proof.” The best you can do is offer evidence where the person is quoted in an article or book approved by the person in question. In this case, your best reference is the authorized biography of AAJ by Anne de Courcy.

Armstrong-Jones's mother was a classic narcissist. He was her scapegoat and always excluded him from her family and deviced ways of showing him how she was ashamed of him. When they traveled by train, for instance, her eldest son with Earl always rode in the first-class car while Antony was made to ride in third-class with the servants and the luggage. She barely acknowledged him even when he was suffering from polio, which she thought was shameful because she was horrified at the thought of having a cripple as her child. Antony battled polio by himself, learning to walk and function as normally as possible without help from his parents.

And, even though I disliked Edward abdicating like he did, and marrying that horrible woman, I always felt sorry for him, too, later on after she started treating him so badly in public. She was awful! He gave up the throne for THAT? I see the same look in his eyes in Harry now. Like, "what the hell did I do?" Almost like a man who can't escape because he brought it on himself, and feels stuck, or else he'll hear about his mistake for the rest of his life if he admits it out loud. Impulsiveness with regrets is a terrible prison to be in, if you can't be a man and admit you made a mistake. Edward drank himself into oblivion rather than leave. I fear the same for Harry.

Well “the firm” wasn’t having that, even though the Queen was inclined to allow the marriage. So, she ultimately, married AAJ. Margaret was involved in a huge scandal in the 60’s, which if it had come to light, would have caused a scandal world wide. She had many problems, impetuous, drinking, and poor judgement were many of them. Sadly.

Compared to Princess Margaret prancing around with Roddy on her island, which was a true embarrassment to the Crown. Though it is true that Antony Armstrong-Jones was a lothario, he must have been a very charming one because as far as I can tell the women suffered his proclivities rather willingly. Princess Margaret probably was less willing, but fifty years ago divorce in the UK was not a common occurrence, and especially not in the royal family, so she was probably grinning and bearing it. It was remarkable that they were encouraged to divorce, which was actually for the best because it would at least correct the initial mistake of their marriage. The only good thing to emerge from that union were their children. All that being said, things were not reported with the level of detail of today, so Mr. Jones' effect on the stability of the royal family was not too significant. He was a very talented photographer and also an inventor. He designed a special electric wheelchair back in 1971 for which he received a patent. But in spite of all his achievements and all the excitement in his life, I think his life was very sad because he never had what we all need, a mother's love.

Also, he never gave up his photography and was a sought-after and respected photographer in the 1960s and beyond along with David Bailey, Terence Donovan, Patrick Lichfield, and Cecil Beaton.
He's always had a good relationship with the Royal Family, especially the late Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother, who adored him and valued the fact that he never once used the family name for fame nor did he publicly smear the royals. Eighteen years ago, on a trip to London, I toured the Kensington Palace apartment shared by Princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowdon. This is such a small detail in the melodrama of that relationship, but passing through the kitchen, the guide pointed out the extraction fan housing above the cooker. Lord Snowdon had designed it himself. It was an absolutely beautiful and graceful shape, in beaten copper. A utilitarian object turned into a work of art. Does anyone know who lives in that apartment now? If so, is Lord Snowdon's amazing fan cover still there?

He also got caught saying really nasty things to his wife in public ,because he knew she would never get granted a divorce. Well amazingly she was granted the ok from the Queen so she didn’t have to live in a life long trap of a marriage while her creepy hubs paraded in the younger men & women in her house using her money to wine & dine them. Also seeing photos of her husbands mistresses in the news wearing her jewelry and family heirlooms! Always felt saddened for her unrequited and forlorn love of AAJ, who was a cad and even abusive - a classic _rebound_ ... from Captain Peter Townsend, her true love, who she was prohibited from marrying. She deserved the love of a good man but AAJ was not capable of that.😞

I feel like this makes things seem much bigger and more threatening to the RF than they actually were. And on some level, some of the blame should also be placed on Princess Margaret. She didn’t exactly marry Anthony blindly. Everyone in their artsy/trendy/party movement knew who he was - and Margot was part of that group. But it was a group where she could still dominate, having the highest status, something she wasn’t willing to surrender in order to marry Peter Townsend. Everyone makes choices, and somewhere along the way, PT wasn’t worth the sacrifice to PM. So maybe AJ was just the cost for her to have her cake and eat it too?

Indeed. Watching a biography on Margaret depicts her as a wilful and spoilt child from the beginning. Using her royal birth to get away with rudeness and incredibly bad behavior. The thing she and Tony had in common was sex. Roddy Llewellyn had to finally leave her because of her constant demands. UTube has The Real P. Margaret which is an excellent documentary. She was dating a few weeks after Townsend was lucky enough to escape her. Warren Beatty, Peter Sellers, Jagger and many more were her lovers. I'm not criticizing her sex life but the sordid group she hung around with. The British people had no idea of all this. We all felt sad over Townsend. It's the same with the "drama" of the great love story of Wallis Simpson and our abdicating king. It was no great love story on her part but the public thinks and is told of the great love of the century. Total bollocks! Sleazy people with money.

Armstrong Jones and Margaret were an irritant to the royal family but never a threat.
I remember adults around me saying it was lucky Margaret was the younger sister as she would make a terrible queen. But I now believe that, much like Harry, she was jealous of her sister and set about doing everything she could to shock in order to get attention. As for Armstrong Jones, he too reveled in his indiscretions. Royals and their friends and spouses are just people. Some good, steady and hard working, some exactly the opposite, some somewhere between the two, but the Royal Family carries on being the royal family no matter what.
Margaret was fifth in line to the throne and, with each new grandchild to the Queen that was born, sank further down the sucsession list.
No, she was never a threat, just a silly childish, selfish woman who chose a husband who was equally silly, childish and selfish.

In the early 1960s he served as artistic advisor to The Sunday Times, and was the patron of a number of, predominantly Welsh, charities. His "photographic career" was a solid body of art work that should not be dismissed with quotation marks, and he did far more than "hanging around at parties". That job was left to gossip columnists like the insufferable Betty Kenward - who always referred to him as Princess Margaret AND HER HUSBAND.

The contents of this video are well known facts, especially if you read Anne De Courcy's excellent biography on Snowdon. For a person who was a womaniser, he was a very talented person especially with his photography, probably the most accomplished of his era. He never gave up this work, though for the first two years of his marriage it was put on the back burner, but the narrator doesn't mention that he had to finance himself, he wasn't on the Royal pay role, so his photography, his design, architecture and his work for the Sunday Times were his source of income. He never fell out with any member of the Royal Family, he got on very well with them all including the Duke of Edinburgh. It may seem strange but he remained good friends with Princess Margaret until her death. It was Snowdon who introduced Margaret to people like Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland, because he was very much part of this bohemian lifestyle through his photography, before they got married. To emphasise the respect and how well he got on with the Royal Family, you only have to see the turn out of the senior Royals at his memorial service in 2017 which included the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
