  • She’s best remembered for her role as Morticia Addams, the macabre matriarch of the 1964 version of The Addams Family, but Carolyn Jones didn’t always have it easy. Throughout her yo-yoing career, she battled through health issues, typecasting, multiple marriages, and at times, even poverty. Still, the dedicated actress valued her profession as much as life itself-or, possibly, even more. From ingénue to icon, this is the story of the indomitable Carolyn Jones.

Miss Jones was so beloved by the crew of 'The Addams Family' that when the show was canceled (and the set was due to be struck down with its contents scattered to the wind/destroyed), the crew knowing they were risking their own future employment in the industry connived to spare Morticia's iconic rattan living room chair from obscurity/destruction and GIFTED it to Miss Jones. Miss Jones was SO touched by this, that (despite all the sometimes chaotic relocations she'd have in the future) she honored that by having that chair in her own bedroom the rest of her life!

I allow various wildflowers to grow in my back yard to provide nectar for all the busy little pollinators that visit. There are always some very healthy Scottish thistles. I try to keep them pruned down to chest height. Then, since I don't want them to go to seed and spread into neighboring yards with their monograss and potted geraniums, I will be out there every day for weeks, working among the spiky thorns to clip off the flowers one by one as their purple petals dry and turn brown. It always reminds me of Mrs. Addams -- which is kind of nice, because the Addamses were my favorite television family.

I loved the fact they were obviously madly in love with each other. The Addams Family was actually a very functional family, loving, respectful- Pugsley called Gomez, “Father”- and they treated Lurch as one of them, never a servant.

@naturalobserver1322 I've not heard of this controversy either. But it was not long after The Addams Family that Star Trek aired an episode in which Captain Kirk and Uhura kissed, albeit forced to do so by nasty aliens. Viewers in the American South were outraged by the interracial coupling, writing angry letters to the studio. It was a different time.

The funny thing is that while not a super ratings hit, it has stayed in peoples minds long after supposedly more popular shows have been all but forgotten.

No one had what TELL A VISION and it's fine ACTORS portrayed as family. Nowhere was their a single father of 3 marrying a single mom of 3 who was a stay at home and everything was great. We lived real life. Video lent drug addicted drunks creeps, neglectful broke poverty ignored us PARENTS. lol TV was escapism. Every child that watched the Partridge family, Walton's, Little House on the Prairie, The Brady Bunch all wished we had that family life. TV is a double edge sword. It lies to us.giving us false hope, false expectations and it at times informs of when truth makes an appearance.

Thank you, didn't know all this about all of her triumphs and trials. Wow! I was one of those 7 yr olds who was introduced to The Addams Family & The Munsters in 1964 & was immediately hooked! While Lillian Munster was the quintessential mom, Morticia Addams was an enigma! She was so different than any woman I had ever seen and a little unsettling to me. She didn’t walk…she glided through her scenes. She was utterly mesmerizing! It’s heartbreaking to hear her story, and I hope she knows how impactful those 2 seasons of The Addams Family have been in our culture. Now when I see her Morticia, I understand why I was so entranced by her; she was an enigma in my world. She was a complete dichotomy? She lived and breathed class and refinement, while emanating sexuality and mystery! And those eyes! A perfect combination of beauty and brains! I don’t think another actress has ever affected me like Carolyn Jones did in that role!

And the actors (and actress) who played the kids in the Addams family (Wednesday and Pugsly) said she felt like a real mother to them . Apparently the kids were so happy because they were like a real family even when the camera wasnt rolling. The actor who played the uncle was a child star whos parents used and abused him and he was extremely protective of the kids and demanded they take breaks for them and made sure they kept up with private tutoring. And when the camera wasnt rolling they would all play board games with them. The kids were extremely upset when it was cancelled as well.

I still love the too-brief series, and I watch my DVD collection over and over. Wow! 60 years ago, nearly. It was creative right up to the end, acting and writing. Only 2 seasons. Sad. Gomez was passionate for Morticia, in a demonstrative, sometimes silly way, but there was no kissing on the lips, unlike other shows of that era and before.
