It's like he re-produces live, which makes it so unique. Also this is in 2008 and he's probably more than advanced today than ever. He also might take the pre-recorded stems and load them up but he moves them all the around all the time. Which is so awesome. He really is a generational talent. I wish more people can listen to him
I think what I find really amazing about Joel is he is a genius in audio gear as well as musical composition, sound design, just everything. He utilizes technical know how to achieve the most creative platform for his work. Pretty impressive.
If this interview had happened today, there'd be like 100 more "fuckin' fucks" pepperd through out :P "So you take this fucking MIDI out put and like, fukin' rout it through this buss and, Oh Fuck! I spilt my coffee....fuck.
Mau5 is a genius. i cant wait tell all his new upgrades come together with the leamer... Live performances are gunna be even more bomb then than they are now...
He's got 2 main channels of tracks, 4 effect channels capable on lemur, a sidechain compressor pre routed over drum tracks to each synth midi and I'm guessing....drum tracks are midi? Can't figure how he's chaining drum samples. Monome is going through a preset synth vst and shoots it into a sequencer probably, and he's got his main effects from the lemur shooting into the Xone 40. Everything is quantized so it all goes together Lamens terms, he has a fuckload of Decks. And tons of FX buttons.
this is basically a way more advanced version of what the glitch mob do for their live sets. skrillex does the button pushing version of this too. he did what joel said he used to do when he just had a few midi controllers. i think sonny even had a trigger finger (one of the ones joel used to use)
Good point. We're always going to go with whats hot atm so for now its ableton. Iv had it for a couple months, already got a few "tracks" but nothing id let to many hear lol. The knowledge i gain w/ it will surly carry over into whatever next music production software.
@RYANFERGIE So, once its all mapped out, you can control the program to play clips, and sounds. Since its ableton live, it also has the ability to play a "keyboard" kind of thing, but its through the PC, and you can do the same with BeatPads and anything midi. I hope that helps :)
Just FYI his current (soon to be past) setup is nothing like this. The cube has at least two hardware synths in it, mixer is a PreSonus Studiolive 24 channel, and a pair of Kontrol X1s. He went over in in a blog post and you can see some pictures too. He's planning to build a "studio" on-stage next though.
For those not understanding this, he's saying how he gets his live show to sound good. Sounds to me like he basically runs a dry signal + parallel compression, then a maximizer at the end. He uses a ton of gear, which makes it difficult to sync. He also likes gear that allows him to customize.
great great video. I’m trying to find some templates with dj/producer style elements but can’t find any. I know you can load up channels with clips, songs and play them back, I know how to ward, but as far as performing past that and using lives extra routing I have no idea. id love some more information on the subject.
@Girholiday He's doing stuff his own way. It's somewhat complex compared to what is needed, but let me help you. Basically what it all boils down to is, how to recreate live what you produce in the studio. You don't need all the gear he has. All you need is a way to get your tracks divided into loops/bars that you can trigger live. If you are using material already mastered, you're halfway there. Also, use a controller to tweak effects on sequences/loops live and that's your start, right there.
@christaticage good point, it's not that the live set will sound bad, it will just sound weak compared to a mastered track.. so if you want to do ALL live set, you'll be fine if you just turn the volume up, but if you're MIXING between live set and DJ set you have to juggle that difference in punch and volume and it's a tough job but thats what DJing is, wankin off on faders and shit
great great video. I’m trying to find some templates with dj/producer style elements but can’t find any. I know you can load up channels with clips, songs and play them back, I know how to ward, but as far as performing past that and using lives extra routing I have no idea. id love some more information on the subject. I have this exact same setup minus lemur plus ipad, minus monomer plus apc40.
I think if you put Deadmau5 and James Zabiela in 1 studio at the same time, they'd make the greatest song of all time, cure all the worlds sick, then they'd fly into outer space together. Clever Clever People
Sweet 6 months later and i can understand more of this video than i don't understand. Basically he wants to make a "2 hour long production" or what have you. So its not one track, next track, next track like a regular dj set. He wants to be able to mix the way he wants by triggering loops of different tracks and playing them together. And much more such as allocating different effects to these loops. So its a constant party basically and he has complete control over what he's playing! Cntd...
@InfinityEnterprises his isnt but the freedom for him to make it more so (like recent sets from him) is there this way. Where as decks restrict you to a certain format.
I was wondering if his requirements and setup would be also possible with Traktor instead of Ableton. He's using a DAW just to mix tracks and add some samples. Is it essential to use Ableton because he's routing stuff around?
Traktor makes things very inconvenient with the limited channels and FX units, and even now there is no option for sidechain compression. Also while you can load two track decks and two sample decks, the sample decks are way too small for the arrangements Joel has (or had, this is ages ago btw) and the task of moving samples in and out of the sample decks when needed imo is just not worth it. The good thing about the Ableton setup (apart from the comprehensive plugin and routing options) is that all of your tracks and samples are laid out in one arrangement. Although, its convenient for joel because the BPM does not change that much if at all. I don't know how one manages playing through a range of BPMs on a single arrangement, I guess Madeon could answer that one.
@jasonlammons Thing is that for a live DJ, this stuff IS actually pretty complex. The more stuff a DJ is manipulating for his set live, the more involved in his music he is, and the more skilled he is (assuming the music comes out soundin good). Deadmau5 is indeed ahead of the pack here.
As an amateur producer, I'm feeling pretty confident because I could understand what he was saying and it all made sense. I just wish he would've shown us that COMPRESSOR.
@StoneddSloth I'm just starting out and i didn't understand a single word he said haha ;) could you recommend some hardware or software to start out with producing electronic music? i just bought ableton and i'm trying to figure out what else to buy, i was considering the novation launchpad but any recommendations would be much appreciated!
I mean just youtube him... there's literally hundreds of hours of him online. its a very different approach to being a celebrity it pulls back the curtain that much more and I feel its a very refreshing change.
Watched this video a few years ago when I was just starting to make music and didn't understand a word, a couple of years later and a long time working on my music I finally do haha.
@RYANFERGIE Ok, say I had a Keyboard that has "Midi" control and is in Midi Mode, The keyboard will now not make sound, but instead each button/key on the keyboard will make a key/data like, say I press the a button on this midi keyboard, it will show up to the computer as something like "Button - 257". Now, you have it connected to a program, like ableton live. The program detects what keys and such are pressed. You can then control parts of the program by programming buttons/keys on the progrm
He's talking about equipment, programs and their features including plugins, vst's, and some standard terminology that any aspiring electronic artist should know. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple things I didnt know about but for the most part, i knew exactly what he was saying.
its always the same, there are always those haters who say how can you pay for a ticket or give your time to go see the likes of deadmau5 live, but you have to give it to deadmau5 he's so in tune with all things live, hes a genius at this stuff . anyone who can dedicate their life to learning all of this which he just talked about in the video deserves the fans and the money, im pretty sure half of djs out there wouldnt have a bloody clue if they watched this video as he explains his live set.
Dude needs to build a rig ASAP! i can only imgine how much of a hassel it has to to be to carry, unpack, assemble, disassemble, and pack up again every show (i know he probably has ppl for that now but still i rig would keep everything the same)
It's like he re-produces live, which makes it so unique. Also this is in 2008 and he's probably more than advanced today than ever. He also might take the pre-recorded stems and load them up but he moves them all the around all the time. Which is so awesome. He really is a generational talent. I wish more people can listen to him
11:40 Deadmau5 suggests Ableton Link 7 years before it comes out!
+Seth Taylor A lot of Ableton users have been asking for that over the years, thus why Ableton devs did it. :)
+Seth Taylor His request has been granted today with Live v9.6!
@@a23musiqThey Just released Ableton Live 12 recently. We’ve came a long way bud 💯💯 I started on 8
He mentions the influence FXpansion has had…. Now it makes sense why 2 of his songs are called 'Strobe' and 'Orca'.
I think what I find really amazing about Joel is he is a genius in audio gear as well as musical composition, sound design, just everything. He utilizes technical know how to achieve the most creative platform for his work. Pretty impressive.
would be sick if joel did a modern video like this.
Mindblowing. And that was 2010.
No this was 2008 (says in the description)
I wish I could spend a week with this guy in the studio. I'd learn so much shit. I wonder where he learned all of it..
yeah i was like what the fuck is that supposed to mean
He's been doing this shit since the 90's
There's so much, I doubt that I would learn much about his modular synths.
Nick Hampton His father developed synthesizers. He started when he was in diapers.
Hendobeatz
Not really. He learned by hanging around some people in a studio
can we get a new one in his newer studio :)
so sick
That's not his studio, it's probably his dressing room for the venue where he was playing at the time
***** i know that. Thats why I asked to get a newer one... derp
If this interview had happened today, there'd be like 100 more "fuckin' fucks" pepperd through out :P "So you take this fucking MIDI out put and like, fukin' rout it through this buss and, Oh Fuck! I spilt my coffee....fuck.
you had me at "jack up the reverb and then freeze the reverb and that kind of gives you this noise, but then when you feed it into that compressor..."
when u realise he just released "our makeover thing, far from finished" 10 LOONG years we've waited
His cube setup nowadays is even sicker.
Cube's retired. Full analog setup now :o
+Phonic Camper his current tour aetup is full analog setup with Ableton, with a new mousetrap inspired stage.. That's just for festivals, no less.
+Bryan Font (SeniorFallRisk) he uses a similar setup for his unhooked gigs, but he uses kontrol f1's now instead of the lemur for effects.
+Senior Fallrisk Rampage festival now has the cube.
check the cube now , it's amazing
I wish I had even a minuscule amount of sense to what he is saying- maybe when I grow up and get into producing. Joel’s certainly a pioneer musician!
seen this video coupla-million times, it's golden
Deadmau5 could revolutionize the way DJ's use production tools live. This is absolute ingenuity.
right?!
Mau5 is a genius. i cant wait tell all his new upgrades come together with the leamer... Live performances are gunna be even more bomb then than they are now...
where was this interview hidden ? i've never seen it in the front page of the channel before ,this is epic...
5:41 Now we have stems!! :o
Native Instruments are watching deadmau5 videos. :DD
11:59 Deadmau5 predicts Ableton Link 8 years before it's creation.
RoboKun lol he didn’t predict, he prolly pushed it to happen lol.
He didn’t predict it the devs allowed access, why maybe because he’s one of the best edm producers of all time?
So weird seeing him without neck tattoos
Yep, that would be it. Its an awesome program.
this was 10 years ago? seems much longer ago... still is way ahead of his time.
Thanks Joel… Your old ways are my new platform! 🤓💁🏻♂️😈
Everything is quantized so it all goes together
Lamens terms, he has a fuckload of Decks. And tons of FX buttons.
Lol random zoom ins starting 5:54 are hilarious.
really?
You deserve a Nobel Peace Prize! I know that those people can get annoying but you were nice and not rude and you helped them.
This could not have aged worse
this is basically a way more advanced version of what the glitch mob do for their live sets. skrillex does the button pushing version of this too. he did what joel said he used to do when he just had a few midi controllers. i think sonny even had a trigger finger (one of the ones joel used to use)
song in the beginning: "Milton" by BSOD
BSOD = Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) & Steve Duda
his Canadian accent was really noticeable, wow
Good point. We're always going to go with whats hot atm so for now its ableton. Iv had it for a couple months, already got a few "tracks" but nothing id let to many hear lol. The knowledge i gain w/ it will surly carry over into whatever next music production software.
He knows so damn much of what he does.... I can only respect that!
@RYANFERGIE So, once its all mapped out, you can control the program to play clips, and sounds. Since its ableton live, it also has the ability to play a "keyboard" kind of thing, but its through the PC, and you can do the same with BeatPads and anything midi.
I hope that helps :)
watched this video in 2010 and got none of it, watched it again just now and understood every word. I love learning about music
We approach live performance from totally different angles, yet I've learned something from his methods. Good post.
Hey, can anybody tell me what the tune is that plays in the intro to this video?
Comments on his Soundcloud are so rude. He's a smart kid.
amazing. love you joel!!!
Did you ever make a In The Studio With Future Music video with deadmaus ? i would like to see that video.
They need to meet with the mau5 again. I would love a thorough studio tour.
This is the longest I've heard him talk without cussing!
Cool Setup. But how does he sync track A and B without warpmarkers? Are the tracks with the same colour already synced in logato mode?
Once I actually got into Midi and producing, this video made sense.
Now an iPad app for 49 dollars, they discontinued making the real hardware Lemurs a while back :( only way to get one is to buy a used one now
@Pearlsrxk motu traveler audio interface...he's using ensemble in the studio.
@riddiford i think i recall seeing the ensemble beneath his laptop in a couple of live pics a couple of years ago
I think now he has an iPad with an app called TouchOSC that he uses in place of/in addition to the Lemur, best I can tell it's doing the same thing.
It’s so weird seeing mau5 without all his tattoos lol
For those not understanding this, he's saying how he gets his live show to sound good. Sounds to me like he basically runs a dry signal + parallel compression, then a maximizer at the end. He uses a ton of gear, which makes it difficult to sync. He also likes gear that allows him to customize.
great great video. I’m trying to find some templates with dj/producer style elements but can’t find any. So did that mystery buscompressor ever get named? I remember seeing this video over a year ago and wondered, with many others, what compressor it was.

You know he is Canadian because he knows the word allsitisisa.
Allsitisisa maximizer really... (9:16) :P

@dreamteampro pretty sure he's used the ensemble live before though.. probably the mobile version.
I was wondering if his requirements and setup would be also possible with Traktor instead of Ableton. He's using a DAW just to mix tracks and add some samples. Is it essential to use Ableton because he's routing stuff around?

deadmau5 took it to the next level and this video was shoot in 2008.
i have no idea what he said, but it's a beautiful thing.

Good work for inventing the word "audiofidelically" (6:44) to avoid having to say "in terms of audio fidelity".
As an amateur producer, I'm feeling pretty confident because I could understand what he was saying and it all made sense. I just wish he would've shown us that COMPRESSOR.
@StoneddSloth I'm just starting out and i didn't understand a single word he said haha ;) could you recommend some hardware or software to start out with producing electronic music? i just bought ableton and i'm trying to figure out what else to buy, i was considering the novation launchpad but any recommendations would be much appreciated!
should do a new interview! id love to see it with the visuals
muy buen video colega saludos desde TIJUANA
thats so sick joel is an amazing producer
Something Ableton's used for mostly is on the fly live performance.
@CamperDamper pretty sure it's Ableton Live
What warping mode in Ableton does deadmau5 use for his tracks?
I mean just youtube him... there's literally hundreds of hours of him online. its a very different approach to being a celebrity it pulls back the curtain that much more and I feel its a very refreshing change.
is that the early macbook pro that's shaped like the powerbooks, or is that a powerbook?
Watched this video a few years ago when I was just starting to make music and didn't understand a word, a couple of years later and a long time working on my music I finally do haha.
Guys please explain specifically how to construct channels in Ableton Live he?
07:58 Are those vengeance samples I see? :)
Niagara Falls. but he used to live in Toronto, lives on L.A. with Kat now.
waiwaiwait does Deadmau5 uses Vengeance Packages Samples???
at 07:55 (VEE Precussion)
correct me if I am wrong..

If your talking about the drums and percussion, those are all samples. The sound he made from ghost and stuff is his own sound.
He's talking about equipment, programs and their features including plugins, vst's, and some standard terminology that any aspiring electronic artist should know. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple things I didnt know about but for the most part, i knew exactly what he was saying.
Deadmau5 es mi pastor.
its always the same, there are always those haters who say how can you pay for a ticket or give your time to go see the likes of deadmau5 live, but you have to give it to deadmau5 he's so in tune with all things live, hes a genius at this stuff . anyone who can dedicate their life to learning all of this which he just talked about in the video deserves the fans and the money, im pretty sure half of djs out there wouldnt have a bloody clue if they watched this video as he explains his live set.
almost like my setup up, but with out the touch screen. need to get one.
@DjBesd Jazzmutant Lemur, touch screen midi controller. Daft Punk use it as well (costs like 4 grand tho : /)
@MightyPolak yeah, its hard to find it in australia as well :/
Is this also in the magazine? I would like to know the number.
Dude needs to build a rig ASAP! i can only imgine how much of a hassel it has to to be to carry, unpack, assemble, disassemble, and pack up again every show (i know he probably has ppl for that now but still i rig would keep everything the same)
I'm not surprised Joel is using Vengeance samples :)
They are really good.
Yep.
He's from Toronto
After Daft Punk Live Set I Think This Is The Best Live Set I Ever Seen
@nurofiend easiest way : make a second kick drum chanel, mute it - and route it to the sidechaincompressor..
why he he sends his 3 decks to secondary audio tracks and put his effects there?
@praxuzftw i believe the Xone 4D is being used as his audio interface
what program does he use in this video please reply me if you know
haha I love how complicated his description of sidechaining the tracks with the muted kick drum is
Whoah no way. What's your band called? I want to hear your talent.
All good buddy, I will be sure to check out some of your stuff.
