This guy is a genius, nobody has ever explained how I could use Ableton Live with my hardware instruments with such ease and actual sense. The way Saytek explained the process of dragging and dropping different parts of loop to start every 4/8 bars, percussive/kick, duplicate Scene and add bass line, then explaining next scene removes the bass line, add chords next with HPF, delay on the channel, go into clip and change dry/wet and filter of sample, synchronize the kick with toms/ride, transitioning with a 16 bar loop will continue into next scene, arrange live using keyboard/launchpad and then using effects from Kaos Pad, Arp, Keystep, and other USB/MIDI devices!!!
This is actually the best set up I've seen, (simple, practical and effective). i liked this guy's approach combining Ableton with hardware, and looks down to earth.
Nice setup, seemed confusing at first but it is actually a really cool "workflow" you have going on there, lots of room to do stuff on the fly in various ways. I also completely agree about taking a few years to get to know a piece of gear until it becomes just an extension of yourself. Cool stuff!
Check your interface settings or internal computer settings if you don't use an interface. If your not sure do a little bit of research (5 mins) on buffer etc may help you out
Honestly the problem will likely be the computer itself. I had endless MIDI sync problems on my Windows laptop. It's super tight now that I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
i don't really like this kind of music, not at all. But i can feel the passion of this guy for what he's doing, the love he has for his gear, for the expensive one as for the monotron delay. admirable
I HAD A MC 303 for ages - that 909 whilst old is still a hell of a box, you can do a whole set with that one thing easy - added to the rest of his gear he wont be short of sounds...so tru tho about reliability.....
HUGE SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE LIVE HOUSE AND TECHNO GUYS WORLD WIDE....WE DO THIS.. WE MAKE THE MUSIC...BRING THE REAL..WE MAKE IT HOT...this was a great video and I support you all the way from Detroit !!! I'm a live house artist my self and we are the wave of the future..DJ'S BEWARE..!!! LOl
Hi Saytek...great and amazing work . I want to ask how did connect all together and play with ableton ?! I know u talked about MIDI but still not clear for me!!! Do u have tutorials or online classes?! Tnx...
Nice setup, and nice playing, but watch out for Ableton Channels to go into the reds or hitting the top (around 9:00 and 16:00), it basically means you are out of headroom, which isn't as much of a problem in analog gear as it causes distortions, which can add harmonics, but in digital running out of headroom and clipping stuff means just adding noise, as there is nothing above 0dB. Other than that very very nice! Big up!
I saturate the channels on Ableton they will not clip only the master clips hence channels turned up to max and master turned down. Saturating the channels in ableton works surprisingly well you get almost analog/tape saturation effect i use it on my live sets all the time. Apparently its something to do with floating points.
to quote the manual : Because of the enormous headroom of Live’s 32-bit floating point audio engine, Live’s meters can be driven far “into the red“ without causing the signals to clip. The only time that signals over 0 dB will be problematic is when routing to or from physical inputs and outputs, like those of your sound card, or when saving audio to a file.
Are you serious about this "saturation thing"? :) Lol. First, what you're talking about - it doesn't happen. If there's anything saturation-like that happens in the digital domain, than it's purely digital clipping. Second, "floating points" are there exactly to prevent such thing from happening by introducing enourmosly large headroom. What you're talking about probably happens because of effects you have on the master track, which could be input volume dependant, so "maxing out the gain" before signal reaches the Master track could actually bring about some saturation. Is that the case? I'm not going down on you, I'm just saying that what you're talking about happens because of reasons other that individual tracks gains. Expectation bias could easily be one of them. Everybody is prone to it, no matter how advanced one gets. It happens to me very often in all kind of forms. Also, you're probably misinterpreting the manual. "Driving signals into the red" on individual tracks is purely for ones visual reference, in lack of a better way to put it. There is nothing being actually over-driver, that is, saturated.
I've just realized you're Saytek :) Wow you're a great musician, I really appreciate what you're doing. I'm also into a similar kind of performing, though not professionaly, but for my own and my friends' satisfaction and I really learned a lot about the craft from this video. What bugged me the most is how easy one gets messed up when using MIDI and VSTs in a live performance project. It gets enormously complicated. It all gets out of hand IMO. Seeing you actually using only flattened audio clips etc. is great because now I know it's a wise choice for live performance :) Wish you all the best in your musical future!
Cool. I'm building up a set with Octatrack, Basstation II, K-Station, Volca Keys/Bass, SBX1 sync box, some effects, Mackie Mix12 and awaiting a Moog Mother 32 :)
this dudes tracks are great been playing your stuff for a while now .. love how you leave a bit of room for ether edits of overdubs ... keep putting out those bangers love your sound so much
Tip top vid man, Was on a UA-cam mosey Can see clearly the manic pattern of additions that one may feel the need to explore prior to condensing the sound and it entering your laptop. Definitely highlights where sounds come from physically allowing hands on control live. Vast latitude of exploration for each piece. Each machine massive in its own right. Cool little family. Midi clock was the piece missing.. Your jams are awesome! Thanks.
Be fantastic if Saytek did a full video breakdown of how the live set works. From what I can gather it seems like he's triggering the main loops in Ableton and then mixing in different drum loops/vocals/stabs etc. But then I've seen other videos where he says he makes it all up on the fly. Still not sure how this setup works.
Impressive! At first I was thinking oh no not another gear slut. But as the vid went on, I learned quite a lot and found his setup and DJing method quite interesting.
Maybe I need to get one of those midi master clocks. I'm using Ableton with push, Verona mk3, tr8, virus access a, octatrack, kaos padx2, stompbox m5, machinedrum, moog minataur, mixed through prosonus 16.0.2.. I tend to use Ableton for master clock, but sometimes octatrack if I don't feel like using my computer (Mac Pro quad core cheesegrater). I could use some synch security.
What a really nice and down to earth guy. Great explanations, tips and helpful info. I’m just starting to build up everything I want to play live with so took a lot from this. Thanks for the video and thanks to Saytek for taking the time. ✌🏻
You mention reliability quite a bit. Do you feel solid with Ableton as far as crashing goes. I really like your music. Is it because you bring all of the midi down to audio that it is more solid? I am thinking to do a live presentation of similar music. What do you think of the Akai MPC live? I am thinking that using it would be more reliable. What do you use to add effects live? You are my new guru when it comes to this style of music. I will follow as much as I can and do you do any lessons on-line?
What a genuine setup, in my mind I feel like I had imagined this setup already yet never really seen a setup that I could say that’s sorta How I always imagined a perfect setup just never new if some of my imagined ideas were even a thing that already out there because i can’t even explain to people how to get to my house so yea me explaining the a setup I’ve imagined in my head , not a chance lol
Great performance and nice setup one question: why dont you use an analog mixer like the 92 with much more headroom and an better warmer sound? is it a personal thing or is there a fundamental reason for that? best regards
a couple of reasons 1: the A&H does not have send and return on insert like the pioneer... 2 i like the way it works and sounds I have never heard any evidence the A&H sounds any better although i have heard a lot of people say it does often people who use it in clubs with a really badly engineered Funktion 1 soundsystem that also sounds very bad
+Joseph Keevill This is one of the best setup and performance masterclasses i have seen in a long time. Thank you Saytek for showing us your setup. It is kinda close to my own 'work in progress' and I have been looking for some advice on some of on it and perhaps you can clear up some points for me. I have a Xone 92 as the master mixer, macshine mk1 for drum fills, rmx 1000 for effects and the volca series for additional synth and an MPC 26 for Live control.. Firstly, what is the brand of the sub mixer you have? Need one of them badly so that i can free up 3 channels on the Xone. I take it that you have all the Volca's plugged into that, then the sub mixer to the Pioneer mixer. Sound right? If not, please tell me how you have it arranged. Another problem i have is that when you daisy chain the Volcas together, sound will not follow the daisy chain to the mixer. Only one of the Volcas will go into the Xone and the others come through the built in speaker. How do you chain them to get the sound you want? A major problem that i have is with MIDI syncing all the gear together. You have that amazing master tempo correction dial that looks really handy. What is that called and how do you tie all the gear to it? The Volca's are the biggest problem, with sound and with syncing and would really value your input cause Korg haven't been any help after several attempts at contacting them for support. Cheers!!
Hey thanks for your words sub mixers a pretty cheap one made by gear for music . Also you cannot daisy chain the audio of volcas you need to send them to separate channels on a mixer
Yep. Gotta trust your gear. Each component is so important and if it fails you during a gig, you're F'd. It's a shame really. We as live electronic musicians must put our faith in a lot of technology to perform a show. If a piece dies on you, you really have no recourse. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of only needing to change a guitar string.
I assume the MidiClock is sending sync to Ableton but I wonder how the audio and the DAW keeps sync with the external equipment as the MidiClock is not using any software or audio track in Ableton to keep sync.
SAYTEK LIVE I had this same question actually, bc Ableton doesn't sync well with hardware. Is that midi box sending midi to Ableton? Is it basically just a midi pal?
my setup is four different guitars thru a mixer, one guitar for major chords, one guitar for minor chords, one for distorted sounds, and one for feedback... overcomplicated and overexpensive. he could achieve the same results with two or three pieces. apologies if that sounds harsh

AG69 lol you must be kidding with „simple”, is there any major gear producer missing here? Elektron, Roland, Korg, push, pioneer, he got it all!!
@@filip_filso simple doesn't mean cheap
this is not simple at all.
Clearly puts a lot of thought into a practical, reliable, rich-sounding performance setup. I always approve of people who know the gear they use
"I ONLY perform for 2 hours", hahaha that's great! Nice set up, creative and simple.
Nice setup, seemed confusing at first but it is actually a really cool "workflow" you have going on there, lots of room to do stuff on the fly in various ways. I also completely agree about taking a few years to get to know a piece of gear until it becomes just an extension of yourself.

Really dope setup, great wisdom
Finally a fellow 909er! Glad to meet ya Saytek!
most inspiring live production video I have seen all year
Very inspiring. I'm going to try out some of these ideas in my own setup...
Id love to learn more about midi sync, almost every time i try to hook up one of my synths to ableton, causes big time latency

how does the midiclock send to all the gear? just wondering how you set that up as it has only 1/2 outputs by the looks of it

hi saytek I really like the setup u midi Jedi !:)
you should strip the 909 and clean all the boards with isopropyl alcohol! !before you retire her!!!
i have had them stripped / cleaned repaired many times they work for studio use but not up to the road anymore
Okay let me know if you want to sell it or any of your bits!!even something to repair! !Thanks
