Remember that this song was written with lyrics and music by Syd Barrett when he was only 20 years old, all the credit goes to Syd for his genius and sensibility before he decided that being a pop star was not what he wanted in life.
elcamino1969 You’re right about Him writing this song but the fact He left because he decided that He didn’t want to become a pop star, Not exactly. Syd was removed from the band gradually because His schizophrenia began to worsen so the band agreed that it was time to let Him go. Syd continued to create music after His departure from Floyd.
It's really amazing, that in a mere 3-4 months stretch, one 20-21 year old (Syd Barrett) recorded and released such interestingly different, curiously experimental yet somehow undeniably catchy material like "Astronomy Domine", "See Emily Play", "Arnold Layne", "Bike" (just throw in 95% of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" track-list while we're at it.) It's not just a matter of writing "hits", it's the sheer talent/ability/thought to manage that often artistically conflicting combination to such a repeatedly successful degree, not to mention doing it in such a short period of time. It's no wonder most of the Floyd (minus Nick who held onto his resentment the longest), David and Rick in particular wept at the loss of Syd, not just as a friend, but also as the talent they both felt he could've and should've been. Reminds me of what Roger said, "Syd was only there for that one album and here we are 40 years later still talking about it." As a fan, I can only get a small sense of that loss, "what could've been", but I can only image the intense degree to which fellows close to Syd like Roger, David and Rick felt and continued to feel that loss.
I wrote my mom's shopping list at 20 AND went to the store to get everything on the list once. I remember only forgetting to buy bananas and cat litter, but to be fair I had lost the shopping list half way through the store and was going off memory. My mom was definitely unaware of my talents.
+Djallal Namri Dude you got that one right!! I'm gonna go chill with umagumma and meddle after this! Modern music sucks compared to what we "old folks" used to party to!

Might be sporting to credit this to "David Gilmour and Richard Wright," given that Rick was in the Floyd when they made the original "Astronomy Domine" and Dave wasn't.
Happens a lot. Gilmore gets credit, Mason appears in the video, but he either gets no credit or you have to click "more" to find his name. Here...the poster does neither.
Syd or no Syd...this is an amazing version. David Gilmour has always treated Syd's music with respect and reverence. By 1969 Syd couldn't have done this anymore, sad to say.
If you listen to Gilmour's performances of this song from back in the Ummagumma days, while not bad, they don't even compare to this. From composition to the instrument playing this feels like the ultimate post-Syd version of this song. So much energy and aggression - even forty or so years later Gilmour was really committed to nailing this song.
I disagree honesty, the Ummagumma version has Ricks amazing intro and sounds less like Syd’s interpretation of the song than this version. This song sounds a bit too much like the studio version for me (in terms of structure), but that’s just my opinion
This shows for me what an extraordinary guitarist Barret was, he managed to get an extraordinary amount of good noise out of a guitar like no one else.
Ah, you again - you stick to your 'all accounts', and I'll deal with the the reality. He had zero musical ability, Rick Wright was the only musician in the band at this stage. Me lived up t'road from UFO Club and you quite obviously......................didn't.
@@Kwinquark1 I'd bet my house you didn't live close to the UFO club as you obviously have NO clue whatsoever. Syd had piano lessons as a kid, even did a school recital and then he was a rhythm player in several bands. Even Bob Klose, the excellent lead guitarist in the early days of the band, said that Syd had an extraordinary sense of rhythm. As for Rick Wright, yes he is a phenomenal player and had about 1 year of jazz lessons under his belt, but he's spoken at length of his kindred spirits and musical bonding with Syd. He obviously had the vocabulary to keep up with Rick. And he wrote 10 songs on Piper at the age of 20-21, years before any member of the band would come up with anything as developed musically. As a lead guitarist yeah maybe he wasn't Gilmour but simply look at the influence he's had on my guitar-based musicians and how they all seem to praise his inventive riffs and idiosyncratic lines. Again, you know absolutely nothing so you should crawl back to your cave my man.
One thing I'll give him. When he covers classic Floyd his versions are mostly as good or better than the originals. He hasn't lost his zest for playing them. I think that's rare.
When it comes to Syd's unique style I think even David understands that he won't even compare but I think he did this as great respect and admiration towards his great friend Syd
Ok that was fxcking fantastic. First heard UMMAGUMMA Fall of ' 69 ' after ' dropping ' a little pill. By the time Eugene had a little accident with an ax. I had stopped time itself. Thank you PF.
Careful with that Axe, Eugene was a much underrated song. Once you get past the screaming, there's some really great 60's instrumental, not to mention the very gradual envelope of the song.
Good grief!!! What a freaking epic performance!!!! Gilmour let absolute rip on that guitar. He will forever be the best guitarist/musician to ever exist.
What never ceases to amaze me is how David can take a PF song that wasn't even "his" like Astronomy Domine or Remember A Day and play it and sing it as though Syd was still there. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a musician.
One of Syd Barrett's classics He wrote on Piper's. Syd passed the reigns to His friend David Gilmour when He walked away from Pink Floyd and Rock 'n' Roll at age 22 (However Syd did make two solo albums in 1969 & 70). R.I.P. Syd Barrett and Richard Wright
Indeed
I’ve always thought this was one of the best Pink Floyd songs ever.
It is. It appears on at least five Floyd releases that I can think of.
@@tool_fighter
I think I’ve got most of the releases. There are several versions of it as well, kind of like “Interstellar Overdrive”.
because it is... along with every other song on PATGOD and SOS ... .. .
The best of Syd Barret
IT IS !
Dave Gilmour doing the Syd!
The only thing missing was the Zippo lighter. :D
He´s the embassador of syd´s memory, image and works
The only can do
he feel like Ah Syd

Awww Richard Wright was still alive during this. :'c.
May Briana really?
Despite Syd's death this how David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) ALWAYS took care of Syd making sure he got paid his royalties !
Mr. Gustav that’s fine. But they were his songs and therefore he was always entitled to his royalties.
David was better friends with Syd than anyone else in the band, after all.
Es que sería el colmo que no le hubiesen pagado las regalías.
Rick Wright (RIP) looks over to Gilmour at the beginning and basically says, "OK, it's time to buckle up!"
I nice tribute to Syd Barrett.
I love the face of David Gilmour in the end. It's like he was thinking: "Oh My God, What we have done? A masterpiece David, a masterpiece.
Actually that look was probably more like, that's for you Syd, we miss you. Syd was the true Pink Floyd
Is anyone salivating over the vintage instruments used in this recording?
Dave has quite the collection....
One gem is a 1954 Strat... serial number: 0001
At least it's in good hands, used and enjoyed as intended...

Insane guitar!!!! Syd wrote this!
I like the fact that they are playing the very original version of the song; for years they played the Umma Gumma version.
