Not many fans knows this, but most of the backing band in this video and the other 1978 promo videos, are David's close friends and his brother, all from David's pre-Pink Floyd band, Joker's Wild.
The chorus from the backup singers is phenomenal, it really drives the sound over the top. I also love how David has to turn to the girls and give the, the nod to start singing.
Colette McKinney .......yes and David “aged” really well too. Quite often guys (musicians) who were real “lookers” when they were young, aren’t treated so kindly by the years. The lifestyle catches up with them I guess but many don’t remain handsome in the way DG has. I think David always had a “kindly” face too (gorgeous when he smiled), that never changed either.
I have been a fan of Pink Floyd's since 1970 when I was 12. Saw my first concert on PFloyd's "Animal's" Tour in 1977. To me the Pink Floyd sound and soul is David Gilmour. I know and appreciate the great contribution of Roger Waters, but David has the sound. As far as solo careers, David's music still moves me and I hope to see him again one day.
Had the distinct and shocking pleasure to sit next to him and his family at Nobu in London, maybe 15 years ago. His son got up and said "Ok dad, I'm off..." David growled "Where you going? When will you be home??"....just a normal family having a normal conversation...Ha!
Unicorn? Just kidding...David had produced them, but I was absolutely astonished that my memory hadn't betrayed me that I had heard another version of this masterpiece once as a child during a car ride, as this was about 30 years ago!
@@alwaysright3718 Without Gilmour, Pink Floyd would never have risen to where they were. The majority of the best Pink Floyd songs had Gilmour singing at least part of the song. His voice and guitar helped make Pink Floyd what it was and is why it continued after Water left. The Final Cut, in which all the songs were sung by Waters, except one, did not do well. Waters solo concert career was mostly him doing Pink Floyd songs. He never accomplished much with his solo albums. How did that redo of DSOTM without Gilmour turn out? Don't get me wrong, I like Waters. And he of course played a huge part in Pink Floyd's best albums, but he certainly didn't do it alone.
David Gilmour is one of my favorite rock artists. They just don't make music like this anymore. Music now days doesn't have this kind of soul. He is on my list of top 10 guitarists. Sucks to get old (50) cuz that means my favorite rock stars are too.
I bought David’s solo album on release, this was always my favourite track. I didn’t question the composition of the song so was genuinely surprised to learn (40+ years later) that David’s is in fact, a cover of the original from English band Unicorn. Regardless, thanks for sharing the lovely performance, David never disappoints.
I've been looking for a Live recorded video of this tune since the album came out before the internet, and VHS tapes were new. It's my favorite Gilmour tune from his first solo album, and probably ever. It looks like the original musicians from it, as well as the stellar backup female singers. I play it for my musician buds ( I'm a guitarist/singer } and they never heard it before. Who was a cooler guitarist in1978? Nobody. Although Page, Richards, and Townshend still had their swagger, Gilmour was a guitar god and looked it. Thank you for posting!!
I did some research and found out that the backup singer on the right, closest to David is none other than Katie Sagal from married with children and SOA. She also did backup for Bob Dylan. Very talented woman.
I've always been a big rock fan. Back in the day (70's & 80's) it was all about Page, Beck, Clapton, Blackmore etc. I've since gained much more appreciation for the guitarists who were not necessarily forfront. Though Gilmour is pretty much forfront, there's always been an understated presence about him that I really appreciate. Great vid. Thanks for posting.
I guess I’m a 2nd generation Pink Floyd fan. I discovered them when I was 12 but that would have been 1987 for me. Have loved them from the first song I heard. It did not occur to me to look into band members solo careers until a couple years ago. This is hands down my favorite David Gilmour track. And I am very much enjoying hearing more of his solo work.
David Gilmour (alone or with Pink Floyd) own the largest part of my library. True Rocker for sure. Needs no glitz or glam to sell! He sells with what he brings 🎸🔥💯🖤 ... Fire! I agree that he’s eye candy as well! The icing this rockin dessert!
I cant believe that this has been on UA-cam for fourteen years and I'm only seeing it today (12/23) for the first time. The Hammersmith Odeon show has been one of my favorite concert videos for decades. This is superb.
this late 70's Gilmour remains so sexy. the way he slide his fingers across the strings at the end, his wavy hair, the outfit, the passion... dear god he gets me delussional.
Nice version of this one. Got to see the man on his solo tour for About Face and was loving watching him play most of the songs off of this album up close and intimate in an opera house. You could see it on his face that he was having a great time.
Simply an amazing LP. Remember picking it up when released and have had a few CD copies of the LP over the years. Still ranks as one of the best efforts from a period in which a lot of solid music was created and produced.
What utterly amazes me about David is that his personalty seems so soulful and mellow and he seem to be such a beautiful combination of vulnerabilty and masculitnity...............aaaaaaaaaaaaaah.........not to mention his talent and physical beauty of course ;)
Fantastic live version, Dave always manages to sound like the album live yet will do subtle things that go above and beyond. The sound quality is actually pretty good . And this song is a rare example of someone doing a cover but doing it better than the original. However Gilmour produced the unicorn album so he knew the song and every nuance of it forward and backwards so it’s not surprising that he knocked it out of the park on both the album as well as live. TY for posting this awesome live version!

One of the very finest guitarist the world has ever known.
Absolutely.
